Ducati Monster 620 not starting: SOLVED!!!!

There is nothing worse than your bike starting. Nothing. So I started trouble shooting and FINALLY found what had been causing the problem with my Ducati Monster 620ie. I keep having to remind myself that this is now a 17 year old bike, and wiring, connections and anythign electrical in any Ducati ever that is this age is going to have some issues. Anyway, I hope this helps you if you've been having similar problems to mine.

I just bought a 2012 monster evo 1100 from a dealrer and when i received it yesterday i had same issue. I did put in gear and roll forward and it did work after a couple of tries so i dont know if the starter motor is issue - but i did add a oil rad protector and it involved messing around moving some wiring stuff in the same area so based on your video i will investigate today to check all is in place. So thanks for uploading!
2003 - I think I've got the same issue.When the bars are turned to the right, no issues. When I turn them left, no electrical. I've narrowed it down to 2 connectors. Going to try to get at them today. Same location as the one you're holding there so that's prob it.
There’s some tight wiring around that triple clamp leading from the handlebars, I’ve had that issue on two out of my 3 620ie. Trace problem from throttle down.
This sounds like what my Ducati ST4 dose sometimes I will definitely look at my connections now many thanks

I have a 2003 Ducati 620. I laid it down and have not been able to get it to start since. I’m at the same point you were. I turn the key, dash does the cycle, fuel pump primes, and then press the ignition and nothing. I bypassed the starter solenoid and I can get it to turn but that is it. So now I’m sure that the starter solenoid is bad. But something else is wrong as well. Any idea? Do these bikes have some sort of kill switch or interlock once the bike is wrecked where they will not start again?
I don't think so, but what I would say is check your fuses. Including the large 30 Amp isolator at the other side of the bike.
What relay was It or gremlin?

Hi dude ! My 620ie also won’t Start up ! It cranks and I have new sparks fresh oil and filter.fuel pump is pumping but still not starting ! With starter spray I start her but then it goes off.could be the fuel filter ? Or the injectors?!
Fresh battery? Does the headlight pulse when it cranks?

I have a 2009 Monster 696. Fuel pump primes when key is turned on. When I press the start button the fuel pump primes as long as I hold the button but I get no crank at all, just the fuel pump sound. Any suggestions? I can send a video if it would be helpful for diagnostics.
Did you try what I showed on the video? Check that cable all the way.

hello , my 2004 ducati s4r has a problem borrow me long time .can u help me fix it ? when N gear i push full throttle the rpm can go the red line quickly,but when i ride on street,if i push the throttle more than 1/3 ,my bike feels like cant breath ,no power and rpm can't go to red line ，i dont kown how to fix it ,wish your help .thanks a lot!
Sounds like cutch/gearbox problem.

I follows the cords as they connected. It’s a simple connection.
can you please point out the location of this kill switch? an exact location , is this OEM ??? thanks im going through a hell now battery plugs no spark and on and on
Not sure if it’s OEM, I’d assume it is though. Can you make it out in the video? Right side of bike.
I have a similar problem my dashboard does not turn on, when I turn the key it only turns on the lights and the gas pump, all good but the dashboard does not turn, but if I turn off the bike the small light keeps flashing. What can i do?
Check fuse.

I have had an intermittent problem on my 620ie 2004. Turns out to be the starter button itself. The copper plate on it has two bumps. Sometimes the plate is stuck at an angle and does not give contact to both connector on the opposite side. Wiggle the button or better, disassemble and fix.
Thanks for this, yeah I had my state fully pulled apart before I found this problem.
Oh tell me more! I just had my bike towed halfway through a great evening because my 2004 620 also would not start. Can you elaborate on what you did to fix it? Or did you just patch then get a new starter? Ducati Beverly Hills is no longer my go-to store, so I'm taking suggestions for LA area. :)

Well in the end I bought the starter button, and kill switch assembly .
Before this I took my original piece apart. You will see that a piece of metal on the starter button touches a small plate which has two connector on it. You could short circuit these two connectors with a paper clip when you want to start the engine. The kill switch could be sticky taped to the handle bar.
I don’t think this is a common problem
But you might have same problem. The problem is never where you think it is….

@@VroomBroomZoom you never said in the video what the solution was? from watching the video now like 5 times, my best guess is you bypassed the starter relay. Correct me I'm wrong please as I'm currently diagnosing my 03 monster 620ie.
Also if I'm correct that you bypassed the relay, how was everything down the road? did you run into anything overheating as far as the wires go and such?

So I have a problem with my monster S4 2002. It starts and after it get warm if I turn it of and immediately try to start it will try but not egnite and if I try for the second time to start it it won't make even a sound.
Lol, sounds like a tough one. Check battery voltage between starts. Then, I would say maybe one of the connectors near he engine could be faulty? It might heat up, lose a good connection maybe. That’s a very big stab in the dark but. Check the basics first.

@@VroomBroomZoom no mate as it's not cranking, that's the problem i need to solve. it will crank when i short across the solenoide
Did I click and not start? Because mine will click and not start. I jumped it and it started and later it stalled and clicked again fail to start.

@@VroomBroomZoom broken rec or reg? Can you explain? Mine is doing same. 07’ M695. Everything normal then just a click and no turn over. Engine light comes on briefly when it clicks then turns right off.
