The key to classic fuzz is that it needs to be running into an amp that is breaking up. If you’re running into a clean amp then run your classic fuzz into an overdrive. Once you learn the secrets and basic tricks to using fuzz then your guitar life will be forever changed. I didn’t get along with fuzz for years until I finally learned how to use it. Now it is my absolute favorite!

@@5weating_8ullets, I shouldn’t call them secrets but I do believe most guitarists do not know how to use a classic style fuzz. The most important thing is that it needs to be put in front of an amp that’s just on the edge of breakup. If you have a good amp that has a great sounding overdrive when pushed (my main amp is a Marshall 1962HW) then you will be able to use your guitars volume knob to go from glassy clean sounds, to several layers of overdrive, to total bombs exploding chaos..Obviously, you have to have a good classic style fuzz. I usually use my red-dot fuzz side of my Analogman Sunlion..but there are many brilliant fuzz pedals available. I gave up on fuzz when I first began playing. Because I couldn’t get those beautiful tones I heard on records. I didn’t know how to use it..I think most players nowadays don’t understand or like fuzz because their experience comes from fuzz in modelers. Which only do full on fuzz sounds. They don’t give you all of the nuanced tones of a real classic fuzz pedal..A real fuzz pedal is almost like a seperate instrument in itself.

Cool video. The sound quality is way better than I would expect through a telephone, and I was pretty surprised when you said that was all you were using.
I don't have a real Fuzz Face or Tube Screamer, but I like to use my Fuzz Face and Tube Screamer clones (Fulltone '69 and Electro-Harmonix East River Drive) in that order too. A lot of people are afraid to put anything in front of a Fuzz Face-style pedal. For sure, there are certain pedals that don't sound good in front of certain fuzzes, but a lot of times it's fine, just like you demonstrated in this video.
The way TS-style pedals cut all the lows and highs makes everything sound too boxy to me when it's after a fuzz, but it's a lot more subtle before the fuzz. I like the way allows me to use a very fuzzy guitar sound, and still retain a bit of definition. On the fuzz pedal, I set the fuzz control to the maximum value and the volume to whatever I want the final volume to be. On the TS-style pedal, the drive set to zero, and the volume set to unity with the clean signal, and the tone control is set as close as I can get to neutral, so all the pedal is doing is reshaping the EQ before it goes into the fuzz.

  • @Scoaster86
    @Scoaster86 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think the reason this combination isn't talked about very often, is that it won't sound this good with most fuzz faces. The Band of Gypsys Fuzz has quite a different circuit than your typical fuzz face, and it has an entirely different input stage, which probably makes it play much nicer with the pedals that you put before it.
Most pedals in front of your typical fuzz face will make it sound kind of awful, which is a common problem with fuzz faces (with a lot of fuzz pedals actually).
So that's why it's often recommended to put your fuzz pedals to the front of the chain

  • @mattgilbert7347

I thought FF pedals liked to be first in the chain, especially germanium FF. I like to boost my Muff pedals after and a light mid-boosted OD *after* a Fuzz is awesome too.

Doesn't matter if it's ge or si, the input impedance of all normal fuzz faces is 10k, this is why they generally don't work well with pedals in front of them. It's also why you can barely touch the volume on the guitar and it cleans up.

I'm sure it's be said before in this comment section but this is the Band of Gypsys "Fuzz Face" which is NOT a Fuzz Face internally. It is the driver circuit for an Octavia and thus doesn't behave or interact like a traditional Fuzz Face.
Imo the best way to use the BOG to get those Hendrix at Woodstock and BOG tones is to run into amp already breaking up/distorting, then run the "Fuzz" setting around Noon to 3 o'clock and push the amp with the pedal's volume knob.
I didn't really think the BOG Fuzz Face sounded accurate to Jimi's but realized I was trying to use it like a traditional Fuzz Face. Watch the BOG footage and you'll see Jimi switch it on and off throughout songs instead of riding the volume like he did with Germanium Fuzz Faces.
It's a different animal than a silicon or germanium Fuzz Face.

Just because Jimi Hendrix did it doesn't mean it's the correct way to do it. Stevie Ray Vaughan did it the other way just like I said and he was much better than Jimi Hendrix and most of the guitar world says that's the right way to do it. You need the fuzz pedal connected directly to the impedance of your pickups to operate to the optimal level and to give you that volume clean up that everyone loves. of course you can do it the opposite way it's a subjective opinion but don't think everything's perfect because Jimi Hendrix did it! Stevie Ray Vaughan was much better than Hendrix. Next level 💯 👌

hmm, Ive been using an older germanium FuzzFace with a TS808 for while now, but always with the Fuzz 1st in my chain, fuzz knob cranked, volume at unity. TS808 I keep the gain pretty low (around 9 o'clock) and have the volume and tone pretty high (around 3~4 o'clock) Both the TS and the FF are usable on their own with these settings. Usually though I keep the FF on all the time and work my guitar volume. I can get a 1/2 dozen different sounds just by adjusting the knobs and pickup selector on my guitar. If I roll my volume back to about 6.5, I can nail the Hendrix-y sparkly gritty rhythm tone and then kick on the TS to fatten it up and add a bit boost it for leads. If I have my volume cranked its a woolly mammoth but I can still kick on the TS and punch up the mids to cut through the mix a bit better. It's bit counter intuitive with FuzzFaces that you actually turn your guitar volume down a hair to cut through for leads etc. I'll have to try the TS first though. I haven't till now just on the assumption the FF really likes to be first in my chain.

Xotic AC Booster (or the RC, for a cleaner, lighter boost) is a very versatile pedal for boosting Muffs & Fuzzes. It also works well stacked with other overdrives. I sometimes run a silicon Fuzz into the AC, or a germanium Treble Booster into same.
One of the best tones I ever achieved was:
      Epiphone LP Special II >Crybaby Wah> Mi Effects Boost 'n Buff V.2>Fulltone OCD V 1.4>Xotic AC Booster>Laney VC30
The EQ controls on those Xotic pedals (RC, AC, BB) are powerful!

Andy - can I come to your place and try YOUR Dunlop mini FF? Why? Cos I went to a store today to try one AND try the fully CCW (counter clock wise) setting on the fuzz and it was terrible. Fully CCW it sounded like it was fully CW - . . . . twice around the clock! A heap of souless muddy crap!! Disappointing to say the least! (And yes I am quite comfortable with my playing ability and my ear)
But truly - it'd be great to see or at least get more info on everything you did for this cool little demo. What guitar? What amp? Amp settings? What was between the output of your guitar and the input of the amp etc etc - How about for grounding, constantly comparing the affected signal to the "dry" signal?
Or maybe it's true that two germanium transistors can sound worlds apart and that perhaps I need to try a heap of them. Does it really have to be this hard . . !!??

Sounds like there was a buffer between the pickups on your guitar and the fuzz pedal. Wireless connections count as a buffer. That means the fuzz circuit is seeing a very low impedance instead of the roughly 10k impedance of the guitar pickups.

If Fuzz Faces and wahs don’t go together, you should travel back in time and tell Jimi Hendrix that his tone sucks.

try putting the fuzz in the effects chain first. Then mix them again and let me know... Obviously you have to start from a great basic sound, not like the one you have in this video! fuzzes are designed for tubes that work at a certain volume, otherwise you'll never get the desired effect.

You want the fuzz going into overdrive, not od into fuzz like you have it. Better yet, ditch the overdrive pedals and use your amplifiers own overdrive. It will sound better.

It's funny, 15 years I've played guitar and never owned a pedal. I just have so many amps that are broken in one way or the other that I can match most music i would want to play thru blown cones and poor 80s amp wiring.

Whats wrong about him using the pedals that he bought in any way he likes to use them? right or wrong doesnt exist in having fun with a guitar. That only applies when you get paid huge loads of money to get some sort of sound for a very professional gig. Anything else just enjoy and experiment at your own pace.

First, if you’re to record a pedal demo. The amp needs to be louder than the strings of your guitar.
Second, there’s a impedance mismatch when putting the TS808 before the fuzz.. there’s a ton of videos about it but you’ll loose some harmonics when having a impedance mismatch.

No one runs the fuzz face with fuzz at zero.....9 out of ten guys run fuzz full up....AND it is well known that if you run a buffered signal into the fuzz face you'll destroy the great fuzz face sound. BTW I've used many original FFs and presently tour with a Analogman Sunface NKT275 (white dot)

  • @kinochdotcom

Hendrix normally put his fuzz 1st, even before his wah sometimes. But, I dont understand why you have your pots on the Strat up to 10, so your amp's clean channel is at what? Why not push your amp as far as possible and roll the volume pot DOWN on the Strat because man, it just sounds really horrible. Not your playing but the tone is just bad man and I don't mean as in bad ass but not good. But, I dont know, if you like it all that matters but my TS9 goes last before the reverb...you've never seen any youtuve video with these 2 pedals? check out Joe Bonamasa's vids or The Captain, hell I use em and I switch them around myself, stack tube screamers, Bigg Muff and OD pedals. But, the volume pot on your guitar on 10...ummm, no. Mine rarely goes above 4 or it'll start rattling the windows because my amp is at around 11-1o'clock, 2 o'clock the tubes start to distort
