Fun with Fuzz! Stacking fuzz pedals for new guitar tones

  • Here's a fun "trick" I like to use with my existing pedals to get new tones. Here I'm using a germanium fuzz face (with a battery measuring around 8 volts) and then stacking it with an overdrive to get a tone that cuts through a mix a bit more, and/or just getting an alternative fuzz tone.
I'm using the bravado amp through a the Two Notes captor into a couple of celestion impulse responses with a Whitfill strat.

The difference between band tone and alone tone is something most younger or inexperienced players don't fully appreciate. I didn't realize how different they could be until I worked a full volume sound out with my college band and then turned it down to bedroom level the following day. All the sweetness and sustain had gone away. When I turned it back up and moved away from the amp, it came right back. That was a major tone milestone for me. Ever since then, I've had a totally different perspective when trying products out.

Something I’ve always been cognizant of, but until a few years ago I only used digital amps. Now I’ve got a collection, and have been experimenting with dual amps and more complex rigs, but those big rigs can’t be cranked at home in my case. So I’m having to find ways to experiment with the live tone in a bedroom context which is difficult to predict how things will change once the air starts moving as you could imagine. I’ve settled on preamp simulation because it’s most practical, there isn’t really a point in trying to simulate a power amp in my case.

Great as always, sir. One other thing I like to do with fuzz face type pedals is keep the gain down a little, ride the volume on the guitar and then add an overdrive as needed. I played in a power pop band for awhile where the FF basically never got turned off.

That advice between 1:41 and 2:01 is golden. Often I find that, when I'm recording, something that sounds not quite excellent by itself may be just the right tone to fit into a track, especially when double tracking.

Thanks! So much fun! As my amp (25 watt Frenzel Deluxe 5E3) has two inputs, I use an ABY box to get the most out of it. From the ABY box, channel one goes into a Fulltone Wah Deluxe and a Fulltone FullDrive 3, then into the Fender input. Channel two runs into a Prescription Electronics Experience fuzz, followed by Whirlwind 10-band EQ and into the Marshall input. The EQ tames the fuzz (i don't use the octave) tones and lowers the volume, to achieve unity gain on both channels even with the fuzz running hot. With one stomp on the ABY box I can move from creamy clean to blistering tones , with no jump in volume. I can also run both channels ( the Y in ABY!) together - yielding clean Wah tones against savage Fuzz. Or I can overdrive the Fender input and combine with the Marshall input for peel-your-face-off tones. My only other effect is a a Frenzel all-tube real spring reverb tank in the FX loop. After 30-years of complicated rigs, less is more for me. And I can get every tone I need.

The video I've been waiting for! I never use fuzz or octave fuzz without an overdrive downstream, mostly Euphoria or Boss OD3, since they retain some of the wooly bass the fuzz produces (with Euphoria, I can actually choose how much).

Hey Brian, great video! I stack my velvet fuzz (big setting, gain around 9 o'clock, tone around 3 o'clock) into a Maxon OD9+ (low gain, tone around 10 o'clock, volume maxed) with my strat and it sounds incredible. Very smooth and saturated, but I don't lose any dynamics. It's the closest I can get to the hallowed Eric Johnson sound.

Great video, I find using an eq pedal with a fuzz pedal works great as well to cut through the mix. I boost the mids and it works great. Especially with a Big Muff that is scooped. I'm sure you already know this but but this is just for people in the comment section looking for another pedal to put with a fuzz to make it cut through the mix.

Hey Brian, I've recently made a very interesting discovery regarding stacked pedals. A couple of mine weren't behaving nicely together (when I engaged the 2nd pedal, my sound got really small and the amp sounded like it was collapsing in on itself). I have a splitter at the end of my chain with a phase invert switch, and when I flipped the phase, the stacked combination became extremely present and focussed. Turns out that asymmetrical clipping (exactly what you get when you combine two different gain pedals) is phase dependant - even when running mono! So a really cool trick to try for even more variation of tone is to flip the phase before the amp (inverting between amplifier and speaker doesn't work in this case, as it has to do with how the pedals react with the preamp. Also worth noting that I notice this much more with my Marshall amps than my Fender or Orange (possibly because these amps are naturally phase inverted, I'm not sure) but I highly recommend giving it a go! Even adding a pedal which inverts phase by itself works too, for example my vibrato pedal when engaged inverts phase, so even with the vibrato depth turned all the way down, i'm able to use the pedal as a drastic frequency/tone shift! Try it, you'll be amazed! :)

I run a BOSS Blues Driver (BD-2) into a Big Muff Pi using my strat copy using the bridge and middle pickups. It's a HUGE sound. But I haven't run in a band context (can't find a bass player or drummer) to see if it cuts through.

100% true @ 4:43, in general, as far as dialing in tones. Not to get too off topic from your video, but, I'm curious; Is how a pedal sounds in a band (at gig levels) part of your RnD process?
I've been modding my amps a lot recently (i'm just a newb), and I've found that what sounds good at bedroom/conversation volumes rarely ever translates to when the amp is cranked up with the full band.

  • @mark7166
    @mark7166 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think that's always been my issue with running higher gain distortions/fuzzes into lower gain overdrives, is that it kinda chokes the sound, and ends up sounding really shitty when I'm playing alone. I've never actually tried it when playing with a band, but I'm starting to think that maybe I should...

WAMPLER, do a impedance theory lesson about why the fuzz face input impedance doesn't like a TS9 or Boss OD-1 or a Buffer pedal BEFORE the fuzz face. How do you measure pedals input impedance and output impedance? show this in a YT video lesson because the impedances of guitar pedals is how they stack well together.

I have two pretty bad cheap pedals, one is allegedly a cocked-wah and the other a distortion. Maybe some people will recognize the offending pedals, maybe not. The cocked-wah is fizzy and horrible no matter how you set it, and the distortion is all lower mid and bottom, all sludge. However, the cocked-wah into the distortion actually made a pretty usable fuzz/distortion, not bad at all. Beefy and good attack.
Not recommended but the principle is there.

I think they work better with a bass, personally.
I've never owned the (overpriced) Dunlop one, but I've built one, and own a couple of variations on it.
I find the Fuzz knob is the least useful one. Don't need that, on a bass - it stays turned down. For more fuzz, turn up the bass.
I'd rather have a bias knob instead - adjusting that can make some very interesting effects.
