    Hey Chad. I found you just a little while ago. I've really been liking your content. I used to be a welder and still do some welding jobs here and there. I have an old 1949 Pontiac silver streak 2 door torpedo. I have cut out the floors some years back and had to put it in storage. I need to find a place to work on it. Im learning what your teaching me brother. It was a fun car and want to drive it again. Its got a 4 speed with a hurst racing shifter ford 9 inche posi with 373 gears a 427 tall deck with headers and dual 3 inch magnaflows with 4 way coil over spring and disc brakes. A couple of parts on the engine. Its flat black with flames and the stainless disc hub caps on it. Shes just a rat rod. No rust really but still a rat rod. So Im going to apply what your teaching me and refreshing me on. Just wanted to say hi and thanks.

    hi chad. you should always start at the top and work your work your way down,, that way you get 2 angles top and bottom,, there is to much sand coming out of the nozzle, you need to go in the circular motion and get a bit closer,, oh and get your self a blasting helmet having said that i still love your work and love the videos thank you so much for doing a good job anyway,, just some thoughts to help you.. i been sandblasting for 30 years now heheh GOD bless you both ps you need a longer blast hose

    The blasting certainly gives a better indication of what the final shape looks like. The two areas I’m not persuaded by are those headlights, to my eyes they would look better leaning back, like ‘39/40 Fords, ‘39 Willys and the “trunk” interferes with the proportions of the bed and makes it look short & dumpy. Just my two penny worth, other than that I’ve definitely grown to like it. A nice gloss black paint job and traditional red tuck ‘n roll interior, wide whitewalls to finish it off. A Hotrod Cab Behind Engine & a truly unique one at that 👍👍👍😎
    Have a great weekend Chad, Jolene & all of the subscribers from England 🤞🇨🇦🇬🇧.

    I don't know much about sand blasting but couldn't you spread like one of those big blue tarps out and roll the truck on it and that way you could recover your sand back. Crazy idea I know and I don't know if you could reuse the sand again. Any way great job you're doing there.

    • @douglasgault5458
      @douglasgault5458 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Recovered sand shot outside isn't worth the hassle of clogged orifices on your sandblasting unit. In the time lost removing debris to re-shoot takes a lot of screening time & your going to get clogged. It's cheaper to throw a new bag in. To recycle a guys only going to be clearing cloggedyour orifices all day.
      Now if your using an expensive basting media like aluminum oxide. You'll generally be using a basting cabinet where the recycling can be pretty much automatically screen the debris.
      Then the economics cheap silica sand. For a guy to screen 4 bags of $5 sand properly give that $25 a hr guys 2 hrs before he's back to work. For sand that will not cut as good as fresh sand. And another 1/2 hr clearing constant clogs. And so by the end of the day you've only gotten 2 hrs work out of a $200 day employee to save a $20 bill. That $25 an hr employee is costing a $100 an hr for actual work preformed now.
      I know I've done a lot of blasting

    • @richardlewin9282
      @richardlewin9282 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question I have no idea but I don't think you can recover the used sand/rust

    • @ParaglidingScotland
      @ParaglidingScotland 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      'sand blasting' (actually using crushed glass or aluminium oxide) for smaller things (up to motorcycle frame size) I've often used a cheap (camping) tent, makes it easy to collect the medium, I then simply run it through a lab grade mesh filter with a magnet in a tough plastic bag to remove most of the steel particles, a few quick shakes typically gives 7-9 parts reusable grit to 3-1 parts rubbish/dirt/rust flakes to be tipped out. The main issue is for each 'cycle' your medium gets a bit smoother (sharp points knocked off grit) so I tend to keep 'part used' grit for pre welding blasting of edges on ongoing projects, for final (pre paint) blasting I opt for new / fresh grit. FWIW a £20 bag of crushed glass typically gives £60 - £100 worth of derusting 😎

    Hey Chad - don't ya just love it when some of the sand grinds between your teeth, the beauties of blasting. I vividly remember blasting a 32 Ford pick-up @ -20 below one night around midnight. Never forget it, blue metal flake and no doubt the whole thing was one big mud wagon. About 40 hrs. later ( with no sleep mind you) my boss and I blocked it out, 2K'd it, hit it again, blocked it, and I blew a nice cherry red paint job on it. We all understand it but few have a clue. I'm always tuning in, good work you guys. Jay from Wisconsin

  • @DNomer
    @DNomer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You might want to watch some pro sandblasters and see how they do it. I don't agree with the 'hang back and spray soft to avoid heating / warping the sheet metal'. It depends STRONGLY on the thickness of the sheet metal, and the curvature. These old cars have thicker sheet metal, and you use 18 ga. You do not indicate the grit size or pressure used. I would not use anything smaller than 30 grit for this kind of work. I am a BIG fan of sandblast for rusty stuff, although for a car, it would have to be something like what you are doing, and at the stage you are doing it. That sand gets into lots of places, including ball joints, etc. My advice is to pick a hot dry day and blast in the morning and prime in the afternoon. Overnight, blasted metal will get blush rust. If there is deep pitted rust, you have to do even more to deal with it, since the primer cannot cover it. Re: the 'finicky' sandblaster, you live in a wet climate, so you will have to cover your sand pot well when not in use, and pick a dry day to blast. But sandblast works a marvelous transformation on old rusty metal.

    • @realC.O.G.
      @realC.O.G. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dennis My older cars have thin sheet metal. Not sure whst country you get your old cars

    • @DNomer
      @DNomer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The older cars (e.g. '40's, '50's) in America have MUCH thicker sheet metal than modern cars, which have ultra thin sheet metal. And 18 ga is fairly thick, although flat panels are still at risk. Curved panels are a safer bet.

    Come on people why is their only 100k subs? This is BAD CHAD!!! The car artist that can literally take a couple junkyard cars from the '80s and a pile of steel and turn it into a one-of-a-kind piece of rolling art that looks like it was from the 50s or the 40s or the 60s or the 30s or the 20s or the, or the, or the... You all get the picture right? I wish his TV show didn't get canceled I dug it, I love the TH-cam channel as well but it's harder to keep up but fear not I will be binge watching all his vids cuz "I gotta see Chad build the Bugatti"! See what I did there huh? huh? Lol no but for real Chad is an absolute artist, now don't get me wrong he has built a few cars that are not my style but who cares they were most definitely someones style. The way he looks at a car and can just see what it could be, like seeing a freaking Bugatti when you look at a 1934 Chevy who can do that? Chad can that's who.

    I was absolutely fascinated watching you sandblast. Ive never done it before but didnt have a place to try it. Thank You Chad for the experience. Thank You Jolene for the camera work, braving the "sand storm".

    It took me about 10 hours to do my 1958 Impala , takes a lot of time getting all those little places. I washed it down with phosforic acid to stop any flash rust and quickly prepped and gave it a coat of vinyl wash primer.
    You need to rethink the body line from the door into the hood.

    excellent to see the truck all one colour . The builder doesn't need to see it physically in one colour because the finished look is already in their minds eye .

    Chad,Jolene...know what would be cool....if You had a stainless rod that went through the door hinges as pins and up to where they went up high enough to become side mirror brackets...it would also make the hinges look like They were there to preform a function.....just a thought
