I shamefully hadn't heard of you until I saw a comparison video of Lombardo, yourself, and Bostaph. I have been binge watching you since, and you are in my top 5 all-time favorite drummers. I can no longer play due to health reasons so watching my heroes is the next best thing. If I could hang out with any current rockstar.....you are my pick, without a second thought. Much love and respect Mr. Dette. God bless you, Sir.
Loved when you played with Testament in 1997 here in Phoenix at the tiny Mason Jar. You guys blew the circuit breakers twice and had to stop. I remember your kick drums were so long they didn't fit on the tiny drum riser so your kicks were turned around and the spurs were to the batter side. Your massive 4 tom rack kit with power toms was so cool .
Cool video. Nice to hear a useful, informative video from a real pro. There's not enough of this kind of thing. I also use wooden beaters and set my pedals up on maximum tension. One thing I would say to anyone considering a wood beater, make sure you use some sort of slam patch or like Jon said in the video with his moleskin. Not just for the sonic aspect, but practically, a wooden beater will crucify your batter head in no time at all if you don't give it that extra level of protection.
Tama makes a silver higher tension version than the one that ships with the pedal. They will never break. Switched to them decades ago. Plus you don't have to jack it up to max, which means it'll have more responsiveness since it's not stretched out to the fullest. Have a problem with Danmar kick pads falling off? Use Evans pads. They will never come off like the other pads (Remo, et al.) do. I used to tape on Remo pads with duct tape. No more. Glad to see you're using the Iron Cobras and pointing out the fact that slower patterns are harder. It's a battle to keep them in check, but as you say, the Cobras eat up the super fast stuff like ice cream on a hot day.
After seein John talk after over 20 years? Seems like a really likable, approachable, straight up dude. Amazing drummer too. Good stuff. Us old school drummers woulda killed for this STRAIGHT and HANDS ON Dette video back in the 90s!!! THIS dude was sooo SICK back in the day, and THEN, ya didn't hear much from him (Least I did not anyways) and then, FINALLY, he's REALLY BACK ( OR been BACK Lol.) It just FLOORS ME how some of these OG drummer guys CAN STILL just PUNISH the drums! And Dette IS NO exception! STILL KICKIN IT SICK ALL these years LATER. 🤘🤘 Again, Dette seems like a pretty cool dude! HAILZ SLAYER!
Pretty cool use to do the same concept playing live. I was using axis pedals and marksman or sonic beaters. Worked great everyone thought i used triggers too. I didnt have that special tape you have tho. I would use black ducttape. Have to re apply every show due to the speed and attack hit would melt thru the tape and get stuck to beater. All trial and error. Sweet to see john.
Man thank you for the video Jon. You are very very underrated as a drummer in the metal world. I saw you with Iced Earth live in Germany and your style and drumming influenced me a lot. Can´t wait for more TH-cam content.
Danmar pad breaking problems? Try using nickle plated forged steel 50 cent pieces adhered (OR way bigger silver dollar coins your country you live in) however/whatever method you use to stick to the bass drums. GOOD LUCK cracking/breaking one of those! Lol. They will bend in half almost BUT NEVER BREAK! I think Vinnie Paul (RIP) stated he used such on FAR BEYOND DRIVEN, and swore their were NO triggers/drum samples for his kit sound during it's production. Just ALOT of this and the "DETTE trick bag" kinda stuff! Lol....THIS video is great! THANKS TO JOHN DETTE. 🤘
This was my setup for a while but I played so hard that I'd bruise the top of my foot everytime the beater went back. I also tore a lot of heads with those beaters.
Thanks for answering my question on the mole skin. I've been having the same problem with my danmar pad. I've got low boy custom wooden beaters with that pad on my kick drum. I'm definitely going to change it over to the mole skin. \M/
Hello Jon! I think people have a misconception with triggers. Triggers helps you to sound louder witch is the main reason i love them. Triggers don’t make your double bass amazing by magic, if you use triggers make sure that your double bass is tight because every little mistake is going to be heard. That old trick with the bass skin and wood beaters is also a really good idea but as you mentioned, its all about preference.
Hi Jon! Yeaheeee! TH-cam somehow got me here. It's actually kinda funny that you're using orthopedic foot care brands on a heavy metal bass drum. Anyway, I am a hobby musician metal/prog/rock drummer and besides my acoustic kit I got an edrum set here and I am struggling with this stupid reboud on the kick pad. And - yepp - I will try some orthopedic foot care stuff now... maybe with some molefoam padding or heel liners ... That is an awesome idea. Thanks a lot!
Jon you are a ridiculously baddass drummer! i've seen you with slayer and anthrax, freaking amazing! and the older i get and the more i watch vids of you, i realize that you are actually better than the drummers you were filling for!! and that says alot cause we all know how fucking baddass Lombardo & Benanti are right? Jeff Hanneman once said Lombardo is like a out of control freight train barreling down the tracks, so i guess that would make you a SR-71 blackbird! Sick right? also do you ever use double strokes on your bass drums? like heal toe? or are you always 1 for 1?
I did this all through the 90's after reading about it from Charlie's May 1988 Modern Drummer issue. The adhesive on the Danmar pad has always been the weak point. It gets a hairline crack and spreads around the perimeter till the disc falls off. For a while I was using 50 cent and Silver dollars under the Moleskin but Wood Beaters hitting a coin wasn't fun for my knees. Ultimately I went to triggers in late 1999 after getting tired of inconsistent live results.
How to get a nice and clean hit from the bass drum? I don't have mind about your Danmar Clickpad but about leg... I play in death metal band where the tempo always are on 170 to 200 and I can not hit with power and beater are hitting a bass drum but sound dissapear in wall of noise and guitar sounds. Maybe some exercices to make leg more effective or something;) Thank you about your response and your wise teach ;)
Not too many drummers can claim they've filled in for slayer and anthrax. Like I said you one hell of a player.... Those are not easy shoes to fill. Even Jason Bittner gets wore out playing anthrax's set!
Very cool.I have a Question .I tried that and got a lot of kick beater chatter bouncing off the pad .Do you tune both kick heads a certain way ? Damping?Ty very much
Jon, is there a reason why you don't use the Silver High Tension springs from Tama? I swapped out the stock black ones on my 2011 30 year reissue Camcos and it's so much better when at max tension.
Hey Jon, I have a question: If you put the beater way back as you do in the above video, don't you get the beater on your foot while playing ? I mean, the beater can make big swinging motions forward and backward, and when it goes backward and hits the top of your foot, that could be painful, especially since the ball of the beater is made of wood.
hello john, german from argentina here ... I have 2 questions for you. First, what is the thing to stick up in the bass drum head. And second, for the style of music what gives you the best result wood or steel snare, depth, heads. thanks man
Think of the mole farms just for him to have killer sound..what a farm? Possibly hairless moles ? Hahaa, I'm joking but it started with lamb skin if you catch my drift...oh and he's filled in for my 3 of the big 4 (one wasn't , but should've been)..bad ass
Glad to see I'm not the only one that thinks that. I love Paul in Testament and Forbidden (his work with Exodus was good too) but he just really struggles with Slayer songs live
Who's the one ass-hat that gave this a thumbs down?? Oh wait, I know . . . the 34 year old dude who's mommy refused to buy him a new kick pedal until he a cleans up his bedroom in her basement.
I think you are really really.. i mean really underrated as a drummer in the metal world...
i Love your style and your drumming.
Keep on beatin !!!

Dude love your work on Testament Live at the Fillmore album
love your Slayer's playing Jon, you are a killer !

Hey Jon, thanks for the video. Really cool of you to share your gear info! Keep them coming!🤘🏻
Thanks for the solution to fixing my danmar pad. The adhesive failed on mine too.

Couldn't agree more with the preference of not relying on triggers. That's crazy to hear you can break springs!
This was my setup for a while but I played so hard that I'd bruise the top of my foot everytime the beater went back. I also tore a lot of heads with those beaters.
What up John! Love that crossfit energy dude. You're one hell of a drummer. Keep killing it!

Your amazing brother and very humble dude.
Did you ever switch to the Speed Cobra?
If I'm not mistaken Charlie from anthrax used the mole skin patch trick back in the eighties also...

I know that Kerry King is going to do some Post Slayer stuff. Do you going to support him?
Thanks really help
Fav live snare? Fav studio snare?

Does the beater not hit your leg on the rebound?
Thx for the video man!
i love you jon
Fav ride live? Fab ride studio?
This is great !
Don't you like the remo falam patches?
Great drummer!
Is it called mole skin?
Hey jonna ! 😂🤘🏻pa pow
🤘

You. Bittner and Benate tho..
Dude your camera !!!
Man you should be the drummer of slayer. You put Paul to shame man.
Glad to see I'm not the only one that thinks that. I love Paul in Testament and Forbidden (his work with Exodus was good too) but he just really struggles with Slayer songs live
With slayer he can’t do much. Sure he is technical and all and he shines in forbidden but slayer no. Dave and Jon are the guys for slayer.
Dette,Tempesta,Hall,Evans for example are monster drummers very much underated and thats too bad
You are a great drummer could be great if Metallica hire you.to get back as they use to be.you know I mean thrash metal.
Who's the one ass-hat that gave this a thumbs down?? Oh wait, I know . . . the 34 year old dude who's mommy refused to buy him a new kick pedal until he a cleans up his bedroom in her basement.
