This is so true I use to practice double Bass for hours and hit a wall and get frustrated!... Now I only practice 35-45mins 4 x a week with focused BPM tempos and have improved immensely!.... Once you're body is fatigued don't push it, cause you then become counterproductive!

I feel like M.E.D is applicable for so much in life, this went beyond drums for me

A few weeks back I started doing longer exercises at slower tempos than I used to. To follow Martyn's example, instead of trying to do 1 minute at 190 I would do 5 minutes at 160. Focusing on being consistent the whole way through, breathing, etc. It has pushed my top comfortable bpm up by 20 in like two months and my overall playing is much more relaxed.

Thank you this is so helpful, exactly what is was struggling with today. I noticed the muscles in my upper legs started contracting at 175+bpm speeds and I wasn't getting anywhere practicing more.
So now I know what to do!

I hear you!! I play in a band and my kit is at my guitar player's house... I can't just land there and go blasting away! I'm getting stuff cleared out of the shed now and I'm really considering getting some silent cymbals. My friend has horses and tons of loose hay so either I try those silent mesh heads or just pack the drums full of hay and get me a city friendly setup in the shed!! Just getting to play when I feel like between tose times I have to would make a world of a difference!!

Buy Practice snare pad, Kick pad, and some pedals. Its extremely cheap, you can start brushing up on all your technique, and it will definitely help you know if you want to commit fully again to getting a kit. That's what I did after playing drums for 6 years, then moving to mainly Guitar and some Bass for around 8 years while doing gigs and being obsessed with recording, mixing, mastering, etc). Now I've came full and bought a kit with assurance and confidence instead of being unsure. Mainly because I spent 5-6 weeks with a $20 snare pad, $50 kick pad/stand, my Trusty AXIS Longboard Double Pedals, and was having one hell of a time every single minute on those little things. That wa enough to bring it all back and for the switch to flip. Its worth spending Roughly 60-80 bucks and then whatever the cost of the pedals may be is worth every penny for decisions like that. but if you could borrow a pair, even better!

Let me say this. The world for me, would not be the same without your passion for double bass drumming bro. You are the guy I did not
believe exsist. I heard double bass drumming with White Zombie in 1993/1994 album. I am sure it was the album that had Thunderkiss 65 on it. The dun dun,dun dun ,dun dun diggaty diggaty kack.! Song.I was hooked and I am still heavy and fighting to not break the surface. Let me live in this world of discovery and wonder. Meeting you on TH-cam I guess you'd say, has done nothing but reasure me that i am not alone. I love how you have taken a approach to double bass drumming that is really years ahead of the pack. The only way it should be studied for now. Singles and in depth to say the least. One of the few people that make a declaration about what you have set out to do, and exceed that by miles. Or kilometers we'll say today. I appreciate the crap out of you brother. Its amazing to see your feet do what is audible. Watching David play 2 of those Belphagor drum play throughs really shows us what you did. Plus. The 5 finger or grips you used in the song that is blast beat overdose. I know the name. Just dont want to type it for more than 3 reasons. Whole other thing guys. You dove right in man. Owned it and away you went. The best content I could ever imagine would be available at my leisure. Needed a friend like you. I had a friend with all the perks. A big warehouse to play. Loved playing drums. But completely intimidated by double bass drumming. He lached on to The Greatful Dead and never looked up. Or back. I even combined our kits to make a redicilous 19 piece drum set and he never even tried. I do not know why. It is just one of those things that will never make sense. He passed at 33 in 2009. So I am left wishing I had ask. Didnt have time to truly ask and deal with what I knew would be a complex answer about fear and commitment to the process of learning. All though Matt was a gifted intellectual. He wasn't jealous. Heard him tell a friend one time that my feet sounded like Uzies. He didnt even know i could hear him. It was a private conversation i happened on and heard that part. I felt embarrassed and I wanted to hug the guy. I really needed to hear him say that without knowing it. He was hapoy drumming so I never pushed it. Was lucky to know Matt and be his friend. That is for sure. I sometimes wonder how things would be if he or someone back then, had been as obsessed with it as me. Rambling. Really am. I miss the early 90s. Special time in life. 16-18 in 92-94. Morbid Angel became other worldly to me. Pete Sandoval changing the world. Far Beyond Driven in 94 blew my mind.! And where we are now is absolutely insane. You,David, and qiut a few more are just playing at a level i have for spurts. But like you said. I never played at this level with consistency and any time I warmed up. Must feel great to hear yourself and know that you can and will duplicate that at any time. You deserve it though. Your love for extreme metal drumming has been a blessing in my life. I smile and just take it in. Nothing else to do. No need for anything else. Really wish that this type of drumming were studied and implemented as curriculum and something young musicians knew well by their early 20s. It would never bore them. Just knowing that it was understood and well known throughout the drumming community would be a better world to live in. Yeah. I said all that. Feel that way. It carries weight. Very much a style that is misunderstood by most people today. Even drummers think incorrectly about it. Its got its own fear factor that cant be denied. You must put in the hours of correct technique practice to even come close to playing with consistency and comfort. Then the ability to carve out your own style while playing it. And that is absolutely possible too. Man you keep doing what you love. I will keep watching and learning. I have to use push pull and heel-toe at mid 40s. Amazing to see and know you do not, and really never have. The purist in you. The unnecessary for you is what is the most impressive. Singles baby. All the time.

Hello, how do we know when to increase bpm? If 200 is our max,we practice at 180 but when do we start practicing at 190?

What about practicing form slowly where burnout is never an issue? Then speed it up after a week of slow practice.

This is similar advice given for studying any academic subject, working out, developing any new technique, etc., etc.
Better to put 100% of your mental/physical effort in short spurts than spending hours on one thing and losing concentration and thinking about other things.

more quality and focus on what I'm playing than practicing for an hour

Can you apply M.E.D to multiple subjects ( double bass, hand techique, fills) in one practice sitting? So you can practice for longer than 20 minutes, you just have to switch the subject.

My problem isn't just speed. In particular, I can play both feet separately at tempos up to 190 bpm, but when I attempt to put my feet together for 16ths, my right foot doesn't want to do it! As soon as I take my left foot off the pedal, my right foot is fine all of a sudden.
    Any tips for this?

Stop practicing one foot at a time and start alternating feet at a slow speed. You'll never get better at double bass if you can't alternate feet.

You lost me at the "reversing progress" part.
If that was true, a touring band playing 2 hours show every night would end up back home unable to play anything :)

    • @marthynjovanovic
      @marthynjovanovic  ปีที่แล้ว +2

musicians performing on stage are not working on new material that they are unable to play at the moment. When pushing our limits while practicing we are leaving our comfort zone and try stuff that we can't play right now (which is something you won't do live on stage :-) )

We use "practising" in a different way.
I don't think it necessarily means "playing something new that you are unable to play", but also "practising what you can already do" :)
I totally agree that after a while is just getting tired and not learning anything, but "regressing"? Not so sure about that.
