    I have two or three shermans with the cable that has the big knob on the dash......I was told it's rare

    • @kirk-nj6344
      @kirk-nj6344  ปีที่แล้ว

      The cable sherman was the last of the step up or step down units before the introduction of the sherman combo. Not a lot of cable units were sold although I wouldn't call them rare

    I just bought a 54' that has the combo lever. There's a huge mouse nest in there and the clutch is rusted together. Tractor has been sitting a while. Need to go through it. Pretty cool that it may have a rare sherman combo though.

    I just bought a 53 Golden Jubilee, and discovered it has what I believe is called the Sherman Combo (?). It has 3 positions, high, low, and 1:1.

      Always nice to discover a sherman especially a combo. Check out my other videos about shermans. Found a nice combo in a 640 that the owner knew nothing about. You can see the busted handle in the Hot-Wiring and old ford 600 tractor, video

    Thank you for sharing your sharing some of your knowledge. I have one question. I removed part of my step up trans. Now i can't figure out how to get the rest of it out. I removed the 4 bolts that bolt it to the trans case. It seems to be stuck on the dow pins. What do i do? Your thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

      Take a flat crowbar and try working from behind on top and bottom.. Also sometimes people goop them up with silicone instead of using the proper gasket.

    Looking to run an old Belsaw sawmill from some type of Ford tractor with a flat belt and was wondering if you had any idea of the rpms of the flat belt pulleys mounted on the ford PTOs. I’m assuming the pto is running at a regular 540 but I wasn’t sure if the flat belt adapters were geared to spin faster. You seem to know you fords so i thought I’d ask. Thanks

      Flat belt pulleys for the ford will vary depending on the throttle speed. Here is a link that will show the sherman but will also show the speed of the standard gears if you don't have a sherman.

    What is a "creeper"? Im assuming thats 'step down'?

    • @kirk-nj6344
      @kirk-nj6344  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the one in this video is a step down. The step down trans has a 1.5:1 reduction. The sherman creeper (special purpose) trans has a 9:1 reduction. This will also effect the pto speed. The howard trans has a 3.5:1 reduction and the everett trans has a 98:1 reduction. The howard and everett are behind the main trans so does not effect the pto speed just the ground speed.

    This may seem like a stupid question but I have a 46 2n with a combo and it’s extremely hard to get into the different ranges, it takes some fiddling to get it to go in and it always goes in eventually. Is it common for them to be hard to shift and is it something that will work out if I shift it around more? Or is it worth pulling it out and opening it up? The tractor was a slightly neglected loader tractor for part of its life, so I don’t doubt that it never changed ranges in the 30 years leading up to me buying it.

      Depending on what generation combo you have exposed top shifter rails could have accumulated some rust. But this will also happen when it stays in the same range and doesn't get shifted into other ranges. You could split the tractor pull the sherman open up the top and spray the inside shifter rails with PB blaster or Kroil but I would think that with more you use it should get better. It's also possible the slide gear has some wear making it harder to line up with the mating gear or the forks could have some wear Or shifter rail detents. Most old loader tractors never got out of low or standard range so my guess in non usage. Keep work the handle, even with the engine off, thru the ranges and see what happens.

      @@kirk-nj6344 thank you for the advice! I had the tractor split to rebuild the engine just a few weeks ago and completely forgot about the tight shifting issue with the Sherman, so even though I was right there I forgot to pull it!

    Hey have a grey Ferguson to20 with a Sherman transmission. Not sure what type no handle and tractor stuck in 3rd 3rd 4th. Any thoughts?

    • @kirk-nj6344
      @kirk-nj6344  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can try this
      fordtractorcollectors.com/4-speed-transmission-locked-up-stuck-in-two-gears/
      I know the gears will be in different position but roughly the same process. If you have chipped or broken gears let me know I have some.
      As far as the sherman it's probably a combo. If you check out my other videos on shifting shermans you might notice the location of your hole. the step up/step down will be closer and lower to the starter bump. If combo, you will see a square with a hole in the center. You can take a 1/2" drive socket reverse it and slip it over the square and rig up a handle. Send me some photos of what you have. Hey Kirk. How heavy are these units. Would they be 40lbs? Regards, Terry
