In this video, Dan and Rachel show every step in the 12 volt conversion process on a 1948 Ford 8N tractor with a front mount distributor. These techniques apply to 1948 and 1949 8N Ford tractors with a front distributor. Dan and Rachel will also show how to test and replace the starter button in the gear shift cover.

You can be sure Dan is as proud of Rachel as anyone can be. As always, a well presented video. As a note to others, doing a 12 volt conversion really is just this easy.

Well Dan and Rachel, bought my premium conversion kit in January ‘23 and it will be January ‘24 in a few days. Since my distributor failed and the tractor has not started in 5 months, I really need to get it running in case of some deep snow this season. I love the freedom of movement you show here as mine has a Dearborn loader. The framework for that thing makes almost any angle I try to work from… a chore. I have decided to use a link belt instead of removing the front loader pump to change the fan belt. I love the way you said “changing that could take all day….” looking at this now, you are so right . Got the 8N running perfectly today as a 6V… now it’s time to pull that apart and make this conversion….a year later 😂

What link belt did you buy?
I need to get one, I really don’t want to have to remove my front loader for the belt.

@@paulridley5579 I bought mine from harbor freight. It was 1/2 the cost and after 4 months, no issues. Had even replace the front mount distributor and the engine starts almost instantly…spins over maybe 2 times and it running great

    Very informative video
I ended up buying this kit through your website. It was very expensive for the quality of the items which came. The key switch was very sloppy and I ended up having to make and weld a piece for the bracket for the alternator, like the one shown on the front page of your manual.
I'm not trying to be negative but to help the quality control and the customers in my situation.

I just recently got interested in classic tractors. My grandparents had a small farm in Canada back in the 50's and 60's and I always had models of their stuff. I love the look of the Farmall's especially the cub and M. Now google is sending me stuff, such as this video. I have no idea who you guys are, but what an amazing product you are. The manual is VERY impressive and WELL DONE! So nice to really help people, who are OFTEN intimidated by electrical work. Just another way you & your father go the extra mile to service the community who love their vintage machines! My father is pretty handy with shop work and he recently purchased a Ford 8N last year (2021), so I passed this video & kit along to him. He said that his tractor actually has an 8V battery! So will probably convert it when something goes bad in the old system. I've also sent him several of your videos for his tractor. We boh love your video tutorials. I also ditto the comments below on how enjoyable it is to listen to Rachel's videos just to learn about these wonderful old machines. It's clear that she also loves them! What a great Father-Daughter Team.

Dan did my 12 volt conversion on my 8N back about 1992 when he had a shop on Lapeer Rd just south of Lapeer. That's when he had no snow on the mountain. Still have the tractor, and it starts like it has electronic ignition but it doesn't. It just starts right up in 2 seconds or less. Everybody else's tractor just grinds, and grinds, and peters out for some reason. Mine starts instantly. It's wierd, but I'll take it. and I store it outside under a tarp in the cold Michigan weather, and it still starts up instantly. Thank you Dan.

Hello Rachel and Dan. I am a foundation board member on a Living History Farm, and part of our responsibility lies in keeping our antique equipment going within budget, and with volunteer labor! We have a 1962 Ford 801/851 (the hood says 801, but I think the wrong sticker got put on it in the last repaint!) that is our primary mowing tractor, and our biggest problem with it is the 6V system. I'm sure there are 12v kits for the "newer" Fords, but are they as easy to do?

I have a 57 600 that my dad bought. It is 6 volt and has no problems starting at all. I did make a few changes to it thou. The biggest problem turned out to be the distributor did not have a good ground. I ran a ground wire to the engine block as it would not ground thru the hold down clamp and the rubber seal. If you still have a starting problem you can put a diode from the starter to the power side of the coil. That way you get full voltage to the coil while cranking instead of reduced voltage. I am a retired Elevatorman, wiring does not scare me. Oh yeah it never cranks over 5 seconds before its running.

Here's what I need, my 1980's japanese Ford 2110 diesel has a 3 point hitch that goes down when the tractor is off, I am sure the pump is running needlessly in order to keep it up while being used, meaning, the hitch leaks down. I have no idea where that fault is and how to fix it, I have fixed all the cylinders on a 580B backhoe, but I dont know how to address the 3 point hitch repair. Guess a book would help lol. Since the pump is probably holding it up, thats wear and tear and excessive fuel use,
