    The audio was one of the first things I noticed. Immediately after my first firefight in the campaign I searched the audio settings to no avail. Non-music sounds need to be beefed up badly.

      Yeah, the audio is one of the things that are really bad in this port. Its also bad at giving you a sense of direction as well. Not sure how they over looked this after all the extra time they spent "optimizing" this game up until now.

      They have, they've also said the unlocked framerate is just there because the community wants it. They originally said it wouldn't even ship with unlocked framerate because it wasn't ready and had lots of issues (like Alex mentions) but the community wasn't happy about that so they added it back in but said it didn't work as intended. And it obviously doesn't. This will get fixed though.

  • @SvDKILLSWITCH
    @SvDKILLSWITCH 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Personally, while I agree with everything you take issue with, I think you should have mentioned the areas that 343i have already taken note of as issues.
    Things like the sound mixing have been addressed - the current mix exists due to issues converting the sound from the 360 version. Dynamic audio mixing wasn't working in the late flights, but was fixed prior to release, indicating 343 are continuing to work in this area. Further audio enhancements will take time, and 343 have said they will update us when they have more to share.
    The VFR (variable frame-rate) mode has been labelled as experimental, and guidance has been that the intended experience is 60fps, but support for uncapped framerates has been included at community behest. I hope further improvements are planned to this mode.
    Ultimately I think Reach just got to the point where they had to hit a release deadline. It's a good base to work from, but I hope further improvements are in the pipeline and that it doesn't get abandoned in favour of working on bringing Halo CE Anniversary to PC MCC.

    sound is not muffled per say, most of the 'direct' sound is missing. looks like distance cues are not sent to sound. You're hearing more environment reverb more than the source, presumably because the engine is not calculating the source as being at a closer distance so it's like you're hearing what it would sound like from far away.

    The sound issue seems like it's been overly compressed. The loudest dynamics have been squashed and the quiet ones raised, exactly what a compressor does. So the initial bang from a weapon is quieter but the ring out and reverberations are louder which can be useful but not in this case.
    This is different from digital compression codecs EG. low quality MP3's where you just lose quality instead.

      The issue is equalization. Not compression. Poor equalization can make audio sound flat and unflattering - similar to poor compression, but equalization is an easier problem to solve. The author is probably using default motherboard Realtek audio which is junk compared to other dedicated hardware options. The way the audio was actually recorded also has an impact on sound quality - none of these details regarding audio recording configuration was shared(I'm being generous by assuming he recorded all footage himself).

    Being a music producer and videogame composer, I cantell you somewhat what they did with audio. It sounds very compressed and low resolution, which means that they probably compressed the audiofiles to be smaller so less memory space it uses, and that "muffles" the audio, there are less high end.
    But what is worse for me is that it also sound overcompressed (what people percieve as "louder"). Therefore the dynamic range is diminished, and this is not a thing of file compression, but more a mixing process that somebody at 343 thought was necessary, but it already sounded perfect, there wasnt any need to remix the audio.

      @nimbulan2020 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I did that pretty quickly, and I've been recommending it to others too. Playing at 60 fps is much more responsive in this game than you'd expect since it's using an older single-threaded renderer, which has significantly lower input lag compared to newer multi-threaded engines. Unfortunately, this is also likely the reason for the framerate dips on the Xbox version, since the consoles have very poor single core performance.

    22:24 This is the same issue that happens with previous Halo (CE and 2)games on PC that had a 60 FPS toggle. All of the animations were 30 FPS, non-keyframed, since it was targeting a perfect 30 FPS on the console. Obviously, with PCs being more powerful, when uncapping the framerate or setting to double the model's base animation frames, it becomes extremely obvious. So it seems that maybe it's an engine limitation more than anything else, or Bungie hand animated every single model.

    • @InnuendoXP

      Maybe, but community mods for Halo: CE implemented frame interpolation to correct for this. Pretty sure the anniversary version had something similar.

      @@InnuendoXP Oh I'm sure that is the case, just like modders did for Quake 1(10 FPS non-skeletal animations).343 industries, I would imagine, used a small subset of their dev team to work on getting Reach out, since the vast majority of their 450 person team is working on Infinite. Or Reach could have engine issues that prevent true frame interpolation. Without looking at the code, we won't know.

    It's great to get a close inspection on what's great and what's still work to be done on what's unquestionably an all-time favourite game of mine.
    It struck me as a surprise when they announced that they would release Halo: Reach in December 2019, as I had the feeling that would be a little "Before It's Ready" even before I was picking up word from Test Flight players that there were some long-running issues such as audio mixing, with 343i making it apparent when they were listing the known issues such as Uncapped Frame-rates being offered in an "Experimental" state and the audio issues being acknowledged (The disclosure certainly was appreciated at least).
    Seeing Halo: Reach get a re-release has been something I have long hoped to see, and the fact it's even received a PC port (With a Steam release with a free Xbox Live account the only catch no less!) and opening the doors to modding (For which only those with modified Xbox 360s could previously participate) is practically a dream come true. But it does feel like it released a little too early before Splash Damage, Ruffian Games & 343 Publishing Team could address or resolve reported issues from the numerous Test Flight builds (I had previously been expecting to see March 2020 end up the release window, but if that ever was true, I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft were making key considerations regarding DOOM: Eternal's delay and/or not other releases I'm failing to recall for that month).

    For anyone interested in articulating their thoughts more on the sound issue: the word your looking for is "Transient". The transient signature of an audio sample is the first 0-2ms of an audio sample that can be tuned to provide audible 'pop' to an audio clip. This all sounds good, but if we took all high-transient sounds (gunshots in this case) and boosted those first 0-2ms, what would happen over time is that you'd experience a slight form of ear fatigue that can be much more concerning than 'boring audio'. With what I know of sound, this was probably the reason (ignoring any possible technical issues that I'd have no way to anticipate or explain). It does result in an over all muddy mix, but without an entire overhaul of the way sound works in the engine, I'm thinking this may have been the only option for the sound team. Feel free to Google around on this subject matter so that your TH-cam comments and Reddit threads sound 10x more interesting.

    Great coverage. Everything you mentioned is noticeable within the first few minutes of play and I hope 343 takes a look at what you found. The biggest issue to me is the sound. I'm on the X, and the sound is extremely base-y and yet the gunfire and everything else is quiet comparatively. It's as if someone turned up the base and turned the treble down. I can hear the boom before I can actually hear the sound of the weapon, so it'll rattle my room, but I won't actually hear or know where the shots are coming from. I kept saying to myself that maybe it always sounded like that and I just don't remember, but glad I was wrong. The only thing I want to point out though is that Reach on 360 didn't come out in 2009 (that was ODST), it came out a year later in 2010.

      Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, MediEval, Resident Evil 2....
      Devs take money in hand, spend time and effort and bring these awesome games to 2019 standards.
      MS, LIKE ALWAYS, is greedy and used to milk MS fanboys. MS sells 1:1 conversion of Halo for 10bucks.
      Just for comparison, BF 5 for example sold for 15bucks in the last origin sale...
      No effort spend, no money taken in hand.PLS STOP ADVOCATING BIG COMPANIES LIKE MS. 10 bucks for what??? There is absolutely no development effort.
      BTW, MediEval's remake gives you the base original PS1 games aswell. That would have been nice if MS would have done a Halo remake + ship the originial game with it like MediEval. But hey, who is MediEval right? MS ftw.

    While I'm loving playing the Master Chief Collection on PC, I agree with the points Alex raised on the video. I hope 343 Industries fixes them in the future. On a side note, I would also like to add that the subtitles are not working correctly: they only appear during cutscenes, and due to the game's muffled sound, sometimes it can be difficult to understand what some characters are saying during gameplay (I'm looking at you Auntie Dot). This also means that deaf people will have a terrible time understanding what is going on.
    I would also like to correct Alex on something he says at the beginning of the video: Halo 2 for PC was released on 2007, not 2004 (which is the year it was released on Xbox).
    Digital Foundry has been good to me.
    Time to return the favor.

    The thing you explained at around 23:00 are exactly what I was looking for. I'm playing on a 144Hz monitor and I know how smooth CSGO for example feels like at high FPS. Unlocking the framerate in Halo Reach PC gave me a really weird feeling because while my mouse movement did feel more responsive than at 60 FPS locked, it still didn't feel smooth and I couldn't really explain why, because Afterburner told me I was consistently running above 300 FPS. So thank you for clarifying that, it is really a major issue imo.
