Hi Sorin. For cleaning a potentiometer or a fader a Deoxit F5 and afterwards Deoxit F100 for better contact and lubrication works often like a miracle and if the actual track is not destroyed it will fix it. Saved me many times. For any other contacts cleaning a Deoxit D5 and D100 can be used. Hopefully it will help.
You need potentiometer 10K. B mark should be linear resistance change of resistance when you turn the angle. You can see this mark on front side of part.
Indeed, the carbon track will get dirty quickly again. Also the cap is pulling everything together so contact runner will put some more pressure on it.
Uh, those pots have a small cutout on the side. Spray deoxit or contact cleaner in and rotate for 30 seconds. Super easy. Then you can measure them to make sure they dont have dead spots. That can also be an issue, but you need an analog Ohm meter.
Two years ago, I came across three power supply devices that the owner of the maintenance center had abandoned for this reason, and they were suffering from the same problem. This is due to the frequent use of this particular resistor (a consumable reason).
i will swap it or put the metal thing back just because maybe sometimes you need low current and by mistake you will push 5 amps when trying to go to the lowest current point SO yes i will swap it
Hi Sorin, I remember that your bench PSU came without current protection, and you were about to tell us how to remove it but this one was already disable. So, How you remove current protection on bench psu ?
I replaced the fan on my unit with 12v noctua fan that has a good airflow but since the original fan runs at 24v (27v measured) and since i don't have a buck converter i just placed a 12v dc adapter (rectangular shape) to power the fan inside the unit secure it with a double sided tape and connected it to the mains of the psu switch now the psu is very quiet
Nobody is going to teach the following companies how to build: a) a DMM (digital multimeter) to Fluke b) a oscilloscope to Tektronix c) a soldering station to Weller ... Analogously to Allen Bradley (founded in 1903) and Clarostat (today Honeywell founded in 1906) how to make potentiometers. Allen Bradley sold its commercial components division to Adafruit (which builds the original Hakko soldering stations). Another way of saying it; in mouser write: adafruit 10K potentiometers and choose the linear type, very economical by the way. All the best.
Whatever happened to those wool boards they used to put in the dial knob you know the white ones that were there to clean the tracks as you turned the knob i can't remember what they called them but thats what i would use to help keep it clean.
Replace it with a non carbon one but with a copper one it's always better when it comes to changeable resisters Edit: thank GOD it worked better than ever and I'm glad that you showed us how to modify and *you working and fixing your own supplies not just the power supply* and i wish if you showed us your whole tools kit and thank anyways. Hi, I would appreciate your help. I have something similar to this. I replaced all the potentiometers because they broke, and since then, instead of 5, it only reaches 4, and I replaced it according to the OAM that is written on it, what could be the problem
Hi Sorin.I did order a linear one but i get a swiching power supply and what is the downside of it.I will upgrade the heatsink and add one on the bridgerectifier?
I would put back that metal casing on the potenciometer only for 1 reason....in case you are starting working and maybe you forget to check the amps, you can unleash 5amps on something by mistake ..meanwhile, if you reset by default the knob on the "Min" current position, you are sure to start from low amps
sorin be carful now it"s a dangerous power supply .cs from 0 amps u can go straight to 5 amps if u turn the wrong way. that could kill lot off components .u should change that potentiometer. good luck
@@electronicsrepairschool Ok, i could not hear, the relays are mechanical also, spring can get old or as another member mentioned the relay could "Arc", which could happen if Zener at the relay failed? Thank you for the video. Could you show us your USB-C/charging wiring in more details? I often wondered how you use your power supply to deliver the 19V through the USB-C.
Hi, if you check the video description, there is a amazon list and the charging port adapters are there. All i did is to cut down the usb-c end and use red and black wires and connect them to my power supply.
Hi Sorin. I have a similar PS, it's a 30V 10A one with the same housing and front plate. I've ordered it from china and when it arrived, i was'nt able to adjust the current at all. After opening the device, i could see that one pin of the big ribbon cable wasn't locked correctly into the connector... chinese stuff. 😂
I used WD40 on a pot once. It swelled the rubber resistor inside, causing it to be harder to turn, but then later became even easier to turn that originally, It worked good for a while, but eventually returned to the same problem. It seems that once pots start going bad, cleaning is just a temporary fix. Maybe what happens is that those rubber resisters start crumbling microscopic particles from the rubber getting old.
I was recommended zippo lighter fluid to clean potentiometers. I was told to just apply on them, and it will sock in, and clean it while you simple rotate it. I was sceptical because it is flammable liquid, but it had worked on many instances with no issues.
Hi Sorin ! I have the same power supply. Potentiometers are very low quality. I had a similar issue in the voltage regulation . I clean potentiometers and work for a while . Better solution to replace all of them with high quality .
i have same issue with voltage, replace potentiometers but after few times on/off, issue comeback, can u sshare link order high quality potentiometers?
It is indeed better to replace these trinkets with high quality potentiometers, then you will enjoy them for a lifetime. I always do this and it is not that expensive.
Interesting how they mounted the heatsink and fan in what seems like the most inefficient way you could imagine... My Power supply has the heatsink mounted the other way outside the case and no fan needed, but it's from the 90s common sense was still a thing ;-) ...
You can get a bit more Amps when you remove the stop, so the potentiometer turns a bit more. But is it good to have the wipers go out over the metal? Maybe the wipers will be damaged and then the carbon tracks will be damaged as well? Maybe?
Ia si incearca si o sa-mi multumesti dupa.
Nice fix but I wouldn't recommend you use it like that where it can turn around freely... if you have it set to a very low current to protect your circuit, and accidentally slip or go a little further, suddenly you get the full 5 amps into whatever you have connected... I agree with other commenters, the potentiometer is probably worn out from a lot of use, better to replace it with a higher quality one.
the poti is also held by the back plate to NOT wobble around... and you really have not even one test cable insead of using tweezers? sorin, sometimes i really do shake my head about your dodgyness...
I've a couple MLINK DPS3005 (same as KORAD KD3005D and RS RS3005D but much cheaper) and those use two rotary encoders and the settings can be locked. I bought them 4 years ago for €40 each, now they cost €60.50 in Spain... I've no idea if those are available in other countries. Note: The MLINK DPS3005 It's not the same as the generic DPS3005 buck converter module with LCD screen or DPS3005 power supplies from another manufacturers that are the same as the one in this video.
I have a power supply where I've cut the fan wire and connected a bimetal switch set to around 50°C in between. The switch is now sitting between the fins of the worst ventilated part's heatsink. And so... when the hottest part gets warm, only then does the fan get power. When I am just messing around, everything is silent. When I charge batteries I don't have to think about turning on the fan. It just happens.
I have same one with other name. I am just learing to use it. I am seeing ur videos all these days and thought the power supply u were using was connected to some hdmi video digitally showing on video. Hope you some day give knowledge to use this power supply in basic too.

I'm using disc brake cleaner spray for cleaning the potentiometer... it's a very good cleaner.. works every time 👍
You don't need to open the potentiometer, just spray some contact cleaner.
Some are sealed and have not a little hole for contact cleaner...you have to open them as they are SEALED
Proper hot glued camera😂
i will swap it or put the metal thing back just because maybe sometimes you need low current and by mistake you will push 5 amps when trying to go to the lowest current point SO yes i will swap it
Yes, I see that as a big danger. He will turn it down to real low amps, and suddenly hit max amps.
Hi Sorin,
I remember that your bench PSU came without current protection, and you were about to tell us how to remove it but this one was already disable.
So, How you remove current protection on bench psu ?
FOLLOWING !!!!
The front of the potentiometers have a B10k, you need 10k linear pots.
Given you use the thing all day, it might be a good idea to install a high quality potentiometer, like a bourns PDA-24

Use yellow wd 40 special contact cleaner

I would disassemble the potentiometer and bend the tiny pieces of metal to force them to make better contact.
Buy high quality wire wound ones and replace the carbon ones.
Same strategy to fix the cam to the power supply: Hot Glue. :D
Insert a high value resistor under the potentiometer when it starts to lose conductivity!
You should have a ultrasound cleaner for that use
Thank You,

I would replace it to see if it were the problem or the circuit board.
