So glad you did this video Sorin. I was going to ask you several times to show the equipment you use, but figured you had a video already that I had to find. Thank you!
Readers who want a very good alternative to an expensive IR camera should think about a phone with IR. I have a Doogee V20 Pro rugged phone that I bought just for the IR but I've been amazed at the quality of the cameras and the whole phone for the price. You really don't need anything as fancy as Sorin's, and, having the IR app as part of the phone gives you a lot of scope for sharing the images between your gadgets. Only awkward thing I've found so far, is that, my other phones can't open the images without editing them in the IR app first, and it doesn't have as wide a range of editing options as you get in gallery apps. Really pleased I bought it: especially last night when I dropped my Titan Pocket on kitchen tiles and it disconnected the camera (also inside every screw post was broken, except the one I had modelled with superglue and bicarb, when replacing the keyboard! Ace stuff! ). Thanks @Sorin, for all the tips and addictive videos!.
problem via phone, is the updates. constant updates from your phone.. high chance u get problems with reading or software.. the best is a dedicated device for ir..
All tools are good because you know exactly how to use them Thank you Sorin You are very generous man lot of us learned from you a lot of useful things Thank you Sorin
To answer the diode mode confusion> I believe it may have different voltage settings ? If thats the case, most handheld millimeters use around 2 or 2.2v in diode mode. Some bench millimeters use higher or lower voltage. That may explain weird voltage drop readings you get. So if you are able to change it, its a good thing.
Thanks for sharing. I believe in getting quality tools and as you said, they will pay for them self over time. Thank you for all your videos, I think you are an amazing teacher at heart and I love to see the joy on your face when you find the problem. I rarely give up when trouble shooting, So it's so nice to watch you and learn as I go from your channel. Thx, Moe
Use a toroidal isolation transformer for the soldering station and possibly the multimeter/oscilloscope. If you would want the hot-air station behind the isolation transformer you would have to buy a pretty big (about)1.5-2kW transformer.
Thanks Sorin! I had IT5125VG not programming with svod 4. I spent hours on it and finally it turned out I had to use the debug port instead of kbd port… I agree SVOD 4 not such a great support I had one spi input/output burned hopefully it was a small transistor. Happened 2 weeks after spending 1100$ cad
Any thermal camera con do the job better than touching with hands i'm using a very very old flir one microusb paid 249 euros 7 years go... ( used now at 100 ) ... and I have no plans about changing/upgrading it
One other tool that maybe useful is a copper bristle brush to use to brush across circuitry when you want to check continuity from one point to another and need to search for that point.
Sorin, you forgot one of the most important tools: your attitude of “ I can fix this!!”. I have seen other similar channels giving up quite easily and saying it can’t be repair.attitude ( coming from heritage) is separating you from others by far. Fixing a dram module with a “proper calibrated wire” instead of just buy another dram is a perfect example.( or cleaning a micro push button, instead of swapping it).this is what I am learning indirectly from you: never give up.
The uni-t thermal camera IS cheaper and does an excellent job, I say more, its the only camera I have seen wich you can put another lens in front wich allows you to exactly pin point the bad component.
great video sorin but i think you leave out one of your important tools of all ...THE ZIPPO FUEL .... i miss you using this tool .....(burn finger end) haha ...in its time your most valuable tool of old times .....
Nice tools! Can vouch for AMscope! Happy with mine, I wear glasses. I have a nice linear power supply from multicomp and tc500 thermal camera from Topdon. Want to upgrade my hot air and solder iron. Still using budget.
Few questions : - do you repair GPUs ? - do you have more testing equipment like signal generator or scope for when you do audio or industrial professional board jobs?
Yes, he has repaired GPUs, such as in th-cam.com/video/rIgK80Cr5Z0/w-d-xo.html. He repaired an audio amplifier/subwoofer in th-cam.com/video/o5VAS61Xem8/w-d-xo.html, and just used his regular test equipment.
Does the H8 have some lag or delay, especially LAG in the video. I would appreciate, next time you show thermal imagers to do a pan left and right at various speeds so we can judge the response time and sustained frame rates of the video. Hikvision makes fast thermal imagers. I just bought the Hikvision DS-2TP21B-6AVF/W (-20c - 120c) for $150 shipped, brand new unit. And it is 25fps sustained with very quick response. It is a 160x120 IR sensor but the image it produces on the 640x480 IPS 3.5" screen is comparable to 320x240, it is very clear and sharp. The unit feels well built and professional. The Hikvision thermal units behave and work like their IP cameras. Feed can be RTSP to vlc, their NVR surveillance apps, any IP camera phone viewr app can view video from their units, just like a normal IP camera. Many other parameters can be adjusted from their IVMS software which are not present on the handheld unit itself. Very cool.
Sorin, for your psu USB cable just buy a common and cheap USB-A female breakout board and connect it to the PSU. No more janky wires. Then use any common USB cable you need and simply plug it in.
It's a shame the Lavolta power supply is no longer available. I keep looking all over for a similar one. There are plenty of 'linear power supplies' on offer but most of them are switching power supplies and the listings are false. Take one look at the unit weight and you know there is no transformer in them.
I need some explanation here: Are switching power supplies the one with a transformer inside or ones without transformer? I need to understand and distinguish them from linear ones . I think it is also important when it comes to other electronics
@@ninsiimachristine The switching ones don't have a big transformer so they are generally less heavy. I just got a UNI-T UTP3315TFL-II that a comment here recommended and so far I'm very happy with it. It's linear (transformer) and has a 4-digit display so the milliamp reading is more precise. It's only 5A but for most things that will be enough for my workbench. The price was pretty good too.
Use isolation transformer ( 1 : 1 )2kva or 3kva. It will isolated Everything in your work bench. if you know a guy who winds transformer it will be much cheaper they buying form a company. In India it cost me around RS 7500.
great video, you said some flash ship does not recognize until connect the unit power, lets say we trying to flash stb flash chip, is it softly to connect stb psu while connect programmer cable to spi flash ?
About the multímeter I have seen someones that instead of showing the OL they show a voltage ( 1.7) for example and I also find It complicated. But like others, at the end they show the voltage the diode consumes.
hello @Sorin can you please explain or give me a link if you already explained what's the difference between switching power supply and linear power supply, and how can i modify my power supply to remove short detect, thank you very much and keep up the good work
That's too much to ask of Sorin. Google for "linear power supply circuit" and "switch mode power supply cirvuit". You'll see the difference immediately.
Thank you for showing your tools, would it be possible for you to explain how you adjusted the focus range on the thermal camera? I have the same and do have problems focusing.
I like your accent sir and the style you work. You reminder me, the old professional people in my young age, somewhere in East Europe. I’m on Milwaukee, WI , and I have my daughter Apple computer and need some fix , where is your shop …? Thx
4:12 is your computer a laptop without ground? Or is the soldering iron not grounded? The issue has to be one of the two, and afaik, weller would ground the tip of the iron. 4:30 Sorin, they use a transformer inside. It's the common mode voltage leaking through the capacity of the transformer windings. But again, if they ground the tip, which even cheap irons do, that shouldn't be an issue. So either your unit is defective (but just measure continuity from tip to Gnd contact of AC plug) or it's your PC/Laptop. Or your entire house doesn't have Gnd (if the building is old).
It helps his business, but for a hobbyist i would say you dont need all of that. He said himself that before he fixed boards with only soldering station and hot air. I would recommend buying the tools if you really see that it will pay off.
Buy the equipment bit by bit depending on what suits your immediate interests, skill set or friends family or customers needs. Buy little bits when you have a few squid spare and I’ve even asked for tools for Christmas and birthdays if I’m asked what I’d like. Thing I’m struggling with is space the wife goes mental when I’ve got all my tools out in the kitchen so getting them out and packing them away is a constant battle. Hoping to move but like you all, money is tight 👍
What sizes of those sop8, dip8, wson8 programming pogopins you need mostly, there are a lot of different ones i see. Suspect you only need a few that are frequently used.
Hi Sorin would you please make video on how to injecting power to the motherboard please I am very confused about that please thank you for all your work I learn a lot from you I really appreciate it appreciate it
Hi sorin U mentioned usbc meter that can’t start the dell xps board without being 3.1 the reason is I had a xps board with damaged pd controllers, which I replaced all 3 and still the board didn’t boost to 20v and I tried everything and replaced the isl controller, is it possible that it was fixed but my meter didint support xps. Nice setup, good stuff. Sorin do you use some type of heat silicone protection for the table? Also before you bought the SIO programer you used to buy chips already programed by a guy, can you share the link were to buy programed chips, I remember you said once but cannot find that video for some reason. Thank you for everything.
The most important "tool" is always the one between the chair and the table! Great Job Mr. Sorin! Congrats
You had me thinking for a second pal.
The Weller iron station behind has a jack to ground it , take a look.

Very good Sorin thanks i did ask you about your tools a few weeks back i have bought a few of your toold as well my power pack is diffrent though
My battle, there are tweezers and then there are tweezers.
Pot scourers to clean soder iron tip. Using copper one atm. Works good.
Copper will wear your soldering tips out faster. I suggest using brass instead.
