Russian Hogwarts: Koldovstoretz - Harry Potter Explained

  • Hey everyone,
    Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In today’s video, we’re going to be discussing the wizarding schools of Europe. However- we’re going to be focusing in on one in particular- one that you may have never heard of - Koldovstoretz.
    Now, there are wizarding schools all over the world, and it just so happens that Europe is home to 4. Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, Durmstrang and- the least known of the four- Koldovstoretz. Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang are certainly the biggest- which is why they are the main participants in the triwizard tournament and why they are the ones we usually hear about- but that doesn’t mean we should forget about the 4th!
    Koldovstoretz is the wizarding school of Russia- and one of eleven schools registered with the International Confederation of Wizards. The name Koldovstoretz comes from the Russian words ‘koldovstvo’ meaning ‘witchcraft’ and ‘tvoretz’ which means ‘creator’. If we overlap the two words they form a portmanteau which means “the creator of magic”- makes sense for a wizarding school.
    The school itself is located in a hidden part of Lake Ladoga- a freshwater lake located in northwestern Russia, in the vicinity of Saint Petersburg. Though the school is Russian- it’s worth mentioning that they are very welcoming of people from all countries- and will accept students from outside of the country. If a student does not live in Russia, they are assessed on their magical abilities by a teacher the summer before the new year to see if they are worthy of joining the school. I can’t even begin to imagine how different the Harry Potter story would have been if Harry had gone to Koldovstoretz instead of Hogwarts.
    Like Hogwarts, the school has a protective barrier surrounding it (most likely concealment charms or the disillusionment charm) which prevents muggles from seeing or locating it. The school building itself is pretty unique, as it’s located partially above water and primarily under water. The school is quite grandiose- as the castle is huge, and the colour scheme inside is very regal- it’s almost like a palace. The colour scheme inside is reflective of the house colours of the school- as, like Hogwarts, Koldovstoretz has its own ‘house system’. However, at this school the houses are called ‘courts’ and there are three of them. The colours of these courts are coral pink, turquoise and amber- which fits well with their sort of underwater theme. Unlike at Hogwarts, students are sorted in to their ‘court’ in their second year, and the sorting considers both the students character as well as their academic performance.
    Like other wizarding schools, Koldovstoretz too has a school uniform. According to my source, the uniforms consist of ‘fairly short flowing robes in a deep navy blue with a trim of their house color’. Underneath their robe they wear a white button up shirt with a collar colored in a light shade of their house color.
    The last cool thing that I want to mention about Koldovstoretz is that they have their own version of quidditch where, instead of flying on brooms, they fly on entire uprooted trees. A bunch of witches and wizards flying around on entire trees sounds epic to me.
    There’s not a whole lot of information on Koldovstoretz out there, and that’s because it isn’t in the books or the films - but it DOES exist in Harry Potter canon. This Is canon.
    Did you know about the school? Let me know in the comment section below. If i missed something, please let me know as I am still learning just like you guys.
    Hope you enjoyed the video
    Until next time

    Would Rasputin be the most feared dark wizard in Russia? He was assassinated in 1916 by being poisoned, shot,stabbed and drowned. So the wizarding world might also think he's dead and if so he could operate from the shadows! Like a wizarding urban legend.

    Was it ever explained how do they deal with the language bareer in the wizarding world? Only 4 schools of magic in Europe and 11 in the world is nowhere near enough to accomodate all major ethnic groups, there will be billions of people worldwide, including potentially thousands of magical children, who don't speak fluently any of the languages of those schools. How is this supposed to work?

    • @arthemis1039
      @arthemis1039 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      My theory : wizards are a small community, and have mostly been keeping magic to half and pure blood, that stayed in certain families. These families have attended their school and therefore speak the tongue of the school, and teach them to their children (like French is probably the magical lingua franca of Western Europe, since everyone is going to Beauxbâtons). So the issue is only reduced to the Muggle-borns in the schools.

    • @kaimagnus5760
      @kaimagnus5760 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I dont think the problem would be all that extreme considering that magic folk are suppose to be significantly rarer than muggles. So 11 schools world wide probably still handles language needs by sinmply accepting the people from the closest areas. Like everyone in The British Isles would go to Hogwarts, all American Students got to Livermorny (spelling, sorry), etc.

Have you ever heard of the Russian sorcerer Yakov Vilimovich Bruce, the sorcerer of Peter the Great? In Moscow, you can really look at this tower. Sukharev Tower at the Sukharevskaya metro station. And the Patriarch's Ponds in Moscow? A wonderful place with a history that gives you goosebumps.

All of this is from the "official-marauders-era" Wiki, which seems to be comprised mostly of fanon and headcanons like Regulus Black dating Marlene McKinnon and Alice Longbottom's maiden name being Fortescue. The only thing on the regular "Harry Potter" Wiki about Koldovstoretz is that the students play Quidditch on uprooted trees and one student competed in a potions championship.

    Thank you so much for covering this! I really appreciate it! I am Russian and while I am sad this school was not included in the books for films I am very happy that there is some representation for us Slavs as well as other cultures as well...diversity is always a good thing! I wish there was more information on the school... I was wondering do you know if you can find a visual representation of the school uniform and houses?

    I put out a short article about kolodovorstez on the Harry Potter fandom wiki.
    And got some stupid comments.
    There must have been a lot of new information about the school released recently.

    I used to think we would have flown in wooden barrels with a single broom used as a paddle according to stories about Baba Yaga

  • @jamieb4225
    @jamieb4225 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the whole flying on trees thing is a bit ridiculous and I’m not a fan of the choice. The great thing about the HP universe is that the obviously fantastic is still somewhat believable if we simply suspend of logic for the time. Flying around on trees seems like a stupid way to add change a minor feature of the accepted universe to make it different for no reason at all. It would be comparable to saying Russians don’t use wands, they do magic by waving an entire tree branch.
