  • In this video I am showing you how I managed to destroy the crystal of a brand new moonswatch mission to the Mars by accident. A thing that will help you not to repeat it. Also you will see a side by side with the mission to the moon version.

Amazing, a $260 watch with a plastic "crystal" so delicate that its own storage box is able to noticeably scratch it. Without the Omega and Swatch names on it, this plastic watch would sell for $40 or less.

I am glad that you were able to recover from the crystal scuffs. However - the more that I learn about the Omega/Swatch tie-up the less I desire to get one. Hello Andrei, thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts. I'm sorry you experienced these issues. You should be commended for you honesty, integrity and values...exemplary and always joyful to find in a person.
To be honest, eventhough I own an Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch, I was enthusiastic about getting a MoonSwatch. Not anymore. The more I've read and the more videos I've watched I'm at a point where I'm not interested anymore. What I did instead of trying to get a MoonSwatch I just bought a Bulova Lunar Pilot Special Edition for $375. This I believe is a much better piece as it dies have true historical value, and it is a very well built watch with an ultra high frequency quartz movement. The only downside to this watch is that it is a little big, however I don't mind this at all.

I've never been so glad I _didn't_ wait hours in line for a cheap plastic watch. That is unacceptable and to think how many people are getting this watch, some kids, and how quickly its going to be completely ruined. Okay, as an owner of one of these, a couple massive misconceptions. These aren't apologies or excuses, but simply a correction on some misunderstandings in the comments. (1) The watch ships with a crystal protection clear adhesive cover that would prevent this. (2) The box is not "cardboard" or "hardened paper". It is a textured, flexible plastic. (3) Based on my individual anecdotal experience, I'm unable to replicate this by storing it *once* in the box. I *could*, however, imagine this could happen if shipping it without the factory protective crystal adhesive. Take this for what you will.

For those who are unaware - paper is the worst thing to cut with a knife because it will dull the knife extremely fast. Paper is ABRASIVE and will even scratch stainless steel (try rubbing a mirror polished watch against that box... or better yet, trust me and DON'T :)). It's absolutely normal that it would scratch a plastic crystal, that's why they put the protective film on it. I'm willing to bet the same thing would happen to the Hesalite on an Omega, maybe not to the same degree, but it would. Is a hesalite Omega also a toy? :)

You are right about the box. I went to Oxford yesterday intending to buy a Swatch Pay but ended up buying a mission to Jupiter. There were about 5 people on the queue when I arrived so I thought there was a sale until I overheard a lady said they are now back in stock. I did a quick Google search and decided to get the Jupiter instead of a Swatch Pay model.
After checking the watch, I wasn’t sure that I really want it so I kept the protective film just in case I want to return it. It happened to me too that the watch was protruding a bit on the box when I tried to close it. I have just checked the watch after seeing your video and there were indeed scratches on the protective film but not on the actual watch.

If I may offer my own experience/rant with Swatch:
I have a Swatch Irony Sistem51. I got it in NYC because I thought to movement was a really cool innovation and I wanted it as a unique talking point in my collection. A year later, I don't like it. I scratched the "crystal" the first time I wore it with my motorcycle jacket. Yeah, it's rough fabric, but it's a $250 watch. My Vostok has never had a problem with that, and while that's purely circumstantial evidence, if the Vostok does get scuffed the crystal is thick enough that I can polish it without feeling like I'm removing a significant portion of the material.
The plastic buckle (did I mention it's a $250 watch?) snapped and I replaced it with a metal one from Amazon.
They say it has 30m water resistance, but the way the crown offers so little resistance, I'm nervous to even splash it.
If it wasn't for the nostalgia of the trip where I got it, it'd be gone. The moment it fails it's going in the trash and I'm never getting another one. Not that I have an option, because it's completely impossible to repair. Did I mention that it's a $250 watch?
I feel like I have to type this facing away from it because it's so fragile these words might snap the pallet fork.
Meanwhile, my Seiko 5 that I got around $100 has been with me mountain biking, swimming, backpacking, clay shooting, etc. Still keeps great time, and I'm about to replace the crystal with a sapphire one because it's not built to be disposable so you can do things like that.
If I had a quartz Swatch for 50 bucks, maybe I'd be less bitter. But for the price, I just don't get it. (Did I mention the price?)

Im a little puzzled over this whole moonswatch craze. A better option is to get a Speedmaster homage if you like the design - a homage built with good materials and a decent movement inside. I did, and for less than half the price of the moonswatch. It even has sapphire crystal, so no scratches expected. The only thing this very capable watch lacks is the Omega logo. The only thing the moonswatch have is the Omega logo - but it lacks all the rest. I think this whole deal is a funny illustration over human irrationality to be honest. An almost philosophical lesson provided by companies Omega and Swatch :-)

Honestly, the more I hear about this watch, the less that I want one. They are an overpriced plastic toy, with nothing more than a cheap quartz movement, with a cheap plastic case and a very fragile ?dial cover? I mean, people complain about Seiko and their proprietary Hardlex Mineral Crystal, but you really have to mistreat a Seiko crystal to get it to scratch. If it wasn't that Swatch owned Omega, this range never would have happened. I understand the allure, but it should be priced accordingly. You could get many different ISO certified Diver watches, with auto or in-house quartz movements that would last decades, for the price of one of these. Good luck to those that have them and enjoy them, just be careful. Cheers.

If you take a Swatch watch to any Swatch store (not an authorized seller, but their own stores) they polish the dome for free and remove any scratches with their specialized machinery while using their own compound. The process takes 10 minutes and it is like brand new afterwards. You can only do that around 5 times in total before you need to replace the whole dome though, since it thins the outer layer so much it might become fragile. I've done this many times since their plastic polymer dome is extremely prone to scratching. :D

I hope they don’t just limit this collaboration to the Moonwatch, this could be just the start of something of bigger future collabs. They could venture to expanding the concept to the Seamaster Omega x Swatch collab too: there are 31 varieties of the Sea theme for them to think about (e.g., Atlantic, Mediterranean, Red, Baltic, Arabian, South China, Celebes, etc). Another one is Railmaster collab series: the likes of Amtrak, British, Eurostar, Trenitalia, Oriental Express, SBB, etc). Better yet, the Constellation collab series would do great with so many possible variants.

Yikes! The box did that! Thanks for letting us know! That incident just pushed me into my decision not to obtain one. Even cheap"er" watches can withstand that abuse - including toy watches.. They are too fragile and too costly to be labelled as a toy, but that is what they seem to be. Owners should then consider to use it like a "disposable fun toy" watch and not worry about it or as "pure collectibles" to be stored away and admired. Anything in between should consider other watches first.

I understand not putting sapphire crystals on, even though I have two stainless cased automatics with Japanese movements and sapphire crystals under $300. But I can't believe they didn't at least put a mineral crystal on. If it can be scratched by its own box, it's not a serious product.

(3) Based on my individual anecdotal experience, I'm unable to replicate this by storing it once in the box. I *could*, however, imagine this could happen if shipping it without the factory protective crystal adhesive. Take this for what you will.

I’m sure others similarly situated will get a big kick out of it, as long as they understand that this is NOT the equivalent of an actual Omega Speedmaster. If, for the retail price, you enjoy the taste of Speedmaster experience it offers, that’s great. Very important....when polishing with Polywatch or any abrasive paste for plastic cristals it is important that you don't make circles. You should go STRAIGHT from top to botom, form botom to top and then from left to right...and right to left...changing angles gradually...and the reason is that you have to always return to the polished surface to soothen the microscopic grooves you are creating over the already scrached surface. If you do circles, you will never match the previous scratches.

The SWATCH is in a plastic type case. It is not in a metalized carbon fibre type case as like the high end of the G-Shock watches, or in a tough carbon fibre re-enforced PVC case as like the average of the G-Shock watches. Timex has some equivalent shock resistant watches.
The G-Shock watches are among the most shock resistant watches on the planet. Inside the high end ones the movement is shock mounted, and is built very strong; for both the mechanical and for their fully LCD types with no mechanical parts for the movement. As for accuracy they are among the best in quartz watches for the price range.
I ware G-Shock watches most of the time. I also have some Omega, Eterna, and Hamilton watches which each cost in the thousands of dollars. They all need maintenance about every 4 to 5 years, and are easy to break if dropped or struck too hard.
With some of my watches I accidentally scratched the sapphire or mineral glass (depending on the model), and had to send for replacement. For the Casio G-Shock, or the Citizen watches the cost was in the range of $150 average. With the mechanical/automatic Swiss watches this was in the range of $600 to $1000 depending on the model. This part sometimes took over a month to have it. The sapphire for an Omega Speedmaster Mark II with the labour costs in the range of $700 to replace!
