I finally got a MoonSwatch. Buying experience, thoughts, my ignorance and a case of misdescriptions

  • There’s been a lot of talk about the MoonSwatch ever since its release a year ago. It’s polarised opinion with some saying it’s a fun, cool, playful watch, whilst others bemoan the poor build quality, the colour bleeding off the cases and onto wrists and the dreadful straps.
    Nevertheless, by some estimates more than a million of them have been sold in the last 12 months.
    I confess, I got caught up in all the hype and I recently bought one.
    Having since got hands on with the MoonSwatch, I’m surprised that no one appears to have pulled either watch brand up on the issue I stumbled into, which is hiding in plain sight.
    This is Swatch and Omega we are talking about. Honestly, both brands ought to be embarrassed and feel abashed.
    Initially, I wondered whether it was tantamount to fraud.
    It was all rather upsetting and a bit of an emotional rollercoaster.
    Let me explain…
    __________
    Thank you Justingalore123 (and sorry) for my unauthorised use of your excellent video footage.

    As soon as I was aware of the profit margin on these I knew what quality to expect. Thankfully I managed to resist the initial urge to get one and I'm so glad I did.
    Whether a watch is £200, £2000 or £20,000, I wouldn't waste a penny on anything I didn't think was worth it.
    Thank you again for a lovely video and sharing your experience.

    I absolutely loved this video! The positive vibes were contagious, and I found myself smiling and feeling inspired throughout the entire thing. The editing was fantastic, and the message was so uplifting. It's the perfect pick-me-up for anyone who needs a little boost of positivity in their day. Highly recommend!

      It's true, but the description of the watch that he put up on screen at 8:48 calls it an "hours" subdial. I ran into the same issue buying a Seiko solar chrono but it had a 24hr subdial instead.

    • @WyvernDotRed
      @WyvernDotRed 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Arguably, if the dial has digits up to 10, it's [obviously] some form of decimal. If it goes up to 12 or 24 instead, it is some form of hour display.
      Of course it is possible to change a 1/10th to a 10h one as the chronograph passes an hour, vaguely like how some Casio watches drop the millisecond display in favour of an hour display after reaching this time.
      When in doubt, look up the movement and check it's features, these are usually listed more accurately in my experience.
      It stopping for saving the battery is a bogus justification in my opinion, new batteries are incredibly cheap and it's easy to install a new battery in a quartz movement yourself.
      The marketing misrepresentation at 15:45 is explaining why you (@watchenthusiastlondon) are so upset with it though, that makes it plain false advertisement.
      But with how proudly they advertise the "bioceramic" plastic case and the general poor quality, I see it as nothing but a marketing gimmick, which they should have gotten right.

    I’ve worn my Mars MoonSwatch for 6 months straight for everything. I know its cheap looking, but its held up quite nice. No fading of the strap. Only light scuffs like you would experience with a hesalite moon watch (which I have owned). this watch isn’t for everyone.. but personally.. I really enjoy it. Its not worth $300… but I’m a crazy watch person and paid it.

    I grew up in Florida. Born in 1954 I was a Space Kid. In 1969 my mom and aunt went to Europe. Mom asked me what I would like her to bring back for me. I immediately said, "Omega Speedmaster watch." The day we landed on the moon she bought one in Zurich for $155.00. I wore the watch every day until 1980 when I was issued a Rolex Sea Dweller in military service. Thereafter I always wore the Speedy in July. It turns out the watch Mom bought was incredibly rare and as I am approaching 70 I sold it to arguably the world expert on Speedmasters. Guess what I bought. Three Speedmaster homage watches, two Paganis and the Phylida with the beautiful ST19 Seagull movement. Omega in my opinion, obliterated the magic of their masterpiece. The homage watches honor that masterpiece. Omega turned a Goddess into a cheap streetwalker in every respect and that was no small factor in influencing my decision to sell my watch, albeit at an astronomical profit.

      💯 Omega (and the Swatch Group for that matter) were entrusted to keep the Speedmaster sacrosanct in honor of those brave astronauts and what symbolized man's greatest achievement! Instead, pure greed got the better of Omega/Swatch and together they've proceeded to "milk" the historical significance of the Speedmaster to such an extent that not much remains of what once was deemed "sacred"!

    Here's the thing about the Moonswatch. I was quite late on the hype, but about 6 months in, decided I really wanted one. I visited all the London stores (that stocked them) several times each, only to either not find the one I wanted, or more usually not find any at all. Then, one day I was watching a TH-cam video and heard someone refer to the Moonswatch, not as a "toy", but as a "souvenir". And that was it. I realised in that moment what it was. A toy has a function. You play with it. A souvenir has no function other than to remind you of some event, usually by being a visual representation of it. In reality, the Moonswatch is a souvenir of a souvenir. The Speedy Moonwatch is a souvenir of the Moon Landings, and the Moonswatch is a souvenir of the Speedy. I immediately no longer wanted one.
    I work in Central London every day, and I have never seen a single person in the street, nor have I encountered anyone wearing a Moonswatch, despite them being sold by the bucketload, and being continually sold out. I think this indicates that I'm on the right track - for most people, it is being bought as a souvenir for the home, and not actually to be worn.

    • @watchenthusiastlondon
      @watchenthusiastlondon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      An excellent point and well made. I suspect that the Speedy itself is much the same - a souvenir to mark the moon landing 50+ years ago - although people do use it and regularly, in spite of the tiny crown which is a bit tricky to wind (daily). I shall probably use mine tonight: heading out with friends, on what’s set to be a gorgeous evening, in short sleeves. I don’t feel sufficiently confident to wear my Odysseus out; sadly, I would just worry and be super conscious about it if I did.

    Firstly, thank you for making this video, I haven’t seen anyone really talk about the experience of buyer’s remorse. It’s all about finally getting the watch (albeit sometimes mixed with negatives, etc..). I am in the same situation (in a way). After a year of not even being able to get hands on with that watch. I walked into the store on Oxford St on Monday and was given the choice of the Red, Yellow, Pink or Turquoise. So I bought the Mission to Mars on the spot. After I tried it on and having the same conflict about quality and price (I am in no illusion to what this watch is) but I had hoped it would feel slightly more sturdy. Even in the store having tried another £100 regular swatch, the difference is quite apparent. Now I’m back home and after wearing the watch for a couple of hours, I am somehow not convinced and feeling some of that remorse. I love the look of the watch, but think it would not survive a couple of door frame knocks. It’s back in the box and I’m giving some serious thought to returning it and getting a couple of regular Swatch ones instead. Decisions, decisions.. 😂

    I have a great Rotary brand quartz chronograph. When you start the chrono the 10th second counter whizzes round for about 20 or 30 seconds, then stops, and functions as an hour counter. However when you pause the time, you see the elapsed 10ths as well. Also having paused, button 1 restarts the chrono running, but button 2 jumps to the elapsed time while the chrono was stopped, and carries on. Rotary 90151 or 90152, alternate colours, yours for around £100 on ebay and worth every penny. Swiss made, with a Ronda movement. I thought all quartz chronographs must work like this but they clearly don't. Great videos by the way. I'm very pleased to have found your channel. ❤😊

I know that feeling, and it's not a question of cost, it's a matter of principle. These items are supposed to provide a sense of joy. Honestly, the MoonSwatch is the main reason I became interested in purchasing and wearing wristwatches. I had never even heard of the MoonSwatch until I saw my coworker wearing the Mars model. From there, I started furious research!
    To this day I have never owned a MoonSwatch, but I did buy 2 other inexpensive models. I think this demonstrates why the MoonSwatch is a success: It brings new customers into the wristwatch market, some of whom may eventually buy expensive luxury watches like the SpeedMaster.

      💯🎯 You’re absolutely right. Of course, I didn’t know that initially (shows how much I know) and the key point is: that’s not what the MoonSwatch website says either. The subdial on the watch is misdescribed on their website and weeks after me pointing this out, they still haven’t changed the copy… It also means that the marketing team that put it all together didn’t know what they were talking about either AND no one from Swatch or Omega has bothered to read the copy… 🤯
      My opinion was ultimately that I fell out of love with my MoonSwatch. I couldn’t envisage wearing it beyond the novelty and so I have since given it away to a family member, who saw it and loved it.

      I was going to write an almost verbatim comment, the chrono 1/10 of a second subdial indeed works as intended, it's the same movement as in many other quartz chrono Swatches 🙂
      I was bewitched by the MoonSwatch sirens song too, and a Mission to Moonshine Gold Edition was offered to me when I enquired at the Rue du Mont Blanc Swatch shop in Geneva.
      So I snagged one for CHF 275.
      They had another one left, and I was told that they wouldn't get any more before the following full moon.
      But I'm not sure about that, the cute employee at the shop might have been pulling my leg.
      I wore the Moonshine Gold MoonSwatch on and off for about two weeks, and I have to say that it made for a nice conversation piece.
      I was actually surprised by how many people remarked on the golden second hand.
      I have no complaints about it, on the contrary, but it feels light and cheap, and the novelty faded and it's now back in its box and in a drawer.
      I prefer the reassuring heft of my trusty old Tissot auto, and for that price there are nicer metal case chrono Swatches to be had 😉
      It might get passed on as a gift too, or maybe on auction on eBay, as they're going for almost double the retail price 😅
      Ciao.

    Sorry you've had this concern. Most of us nutty watch collectors have had this quartz module in a chronograph watch at some point and that pattern layout always has a 10th counter with A 60 minute dial opposite usually, so not a mystery I'm guessing. Not to be confused with regular mechanical chronographs which usually carry the hours/minutes chrono dials through valjoux, lemania, breitling etc movements with variation on movement rotation and dial pattern layout. The quartz mechanical Lunar pilot has an active 10th counter for 30 seconds which spins then stops to save battery but continues to monitor 10th position, showing another variation on this pattern. All part of discovery and fun learning I guess. Happy collecting. 🙌

    Credit to you for actually making and publishing this video. Sure, someone at the Swatch copy-department made a mistake that shouldn't really occur - but does anyway from time to time. The most bewildering thing to me is that you are clearly a well-educated person, yet your first thought when you see a subdial split into 10ths that only turns when the watch is stopped, is that it surely must be a faulty hour-hand. And even though the first Google-hit on a "moonswatch" search links to an article telling you that the 2 o'clock subdial is a 1/10ths second counter, you then spend time making a video criticizing Swatch and Omega for what is essentially a typo.
    Don't get me wrong. I get way too pernickety about things too - but at this level, it gets unhealthy 🙂. And coming clean about it on TH-cam demands a certain kind of respect.
    Apart from that, I am a little surprised to see a Lange-connoisseur falling for the Moonswatch hype. You can get some really decent watches for 260$ - but Moonswatches surely are not among them. They are overpriced fashion items.

    • @watchenthusiastlondon
      @watchenthusiastlondon  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, I’m just telling it as it happened. I don’t pretend to be a watch expert, just an enthusiast. And try as I may, I googled a lot and found nothing to suggest the subdial was a 10th of a second - until @Justingalore123’s video…
      I have other chronographs by Bremont that count hours & hadn’t come across the 10th of a second subdial before. Again, just goes to show what I know !
      To my mind, it’s more than a typo. It’s a complete miss of understanding by the watch brands. I can’t help that it bothered me to the extent that it did (but it did). 🤷‍♂️
      And as for being a Lange connoisseur, again, I just know what I know and like what I like. Not sure you could call me a connoisseur… the collaboration simply captured my imagination. Like so many others, I guess.

    You are indeed correct that the Swatch blurb describing the chronograph function is not only wrong, but also misleading for potential and already owners. As someone else pointed out, the sub-register at 2 o'clock is a 1/10th of a second counter. It is my opinion that they purposely omitted the exact specifications of the movement, which should be a ETA G10.212. However this omission will annoyingly allow them to weasel their way out with some form of disclaimer that due to the increased popularity, we have had to substitute the movement with another, thus the features have changed (usual marketing spiel). Wife and I ended up with a Venus for her and a Mars for myself, but cannot comment on the quality of the watches as we purchased them and they've never left the box since - lol.

    My 2010 Victorinox Quartz chronograph has the same Eta movement that's in this watch. I have to say that it's the most accurate watch I've ever owned. It can go for several months and it will have lost at most a few seconds from universal coordinated time. That said, the chronograph function leaves much more to be desired. It's difficult to operate and reset and the tenth of a second dial at the 2 o'clock position is pretty useless for what I use it for. I'd rather have a dedicated minute hand on the big dial like some other models I've seen. Anyway the accuracy is still great and that's why I still wear it.

    Its pretty standard practice in quartz chronos to have a 1/10 second rather than an hours indicator, partly because running the chrono for long periods drains the battery and partly because quartz allows that accuracy. The copy on the website was clearly written by someone who hadnt actually had a Moonswatch in their hand and is misleading, but that functionality at least is not 'a Moonswatch thing'. Its also on my Bulova Lunar Pilot and Farer and Seiko chronos.

    Is the two o’clock dial for 10th of seconds for timing and not an hour timer. So the chronograph does seconds and tenths and full minutes but doesn’t count hours since it is only marked to 10 and not 12 so when counting seconds and stopping it it reads however many tenths of a second that is why it is seemingly stopping at random spots

    Just kind of makes me to appreciate my "Moonwatch" more (it is actually Speedmaster racing "sapphire sandwich", but looks very similar to any Speedmaster Professional) ... it turns out I was an idiot and I thought the hour dial was minute dial (and I thought it is weird they have chosen 12 as a number), because it moved with the minutes, but I didn't even realise until now it had two hands. So basically it is full second clock with chronograph that shows both minutes and hours up-to 12 from the moment you started chronograph!

    Is it good as a first luxury watch?

      I haven’t ever got to grips with a Nomos before. They haven’t ever appealed to me, so I don’t know much about them but I can’t comment further until / unless I get ‘hands on’. To date, I have only made videos once I have actually bought and owned a watch & currently have no plans to do so with a Nomos… That said, I know the brand has a large fan base and people do rave about them… Best advice is, go and handle one, wear one and set aside any discomfort you might feel about ‘geeking out’ on it in front of the retailer. You need to get comfortable with what you’re intending to buy and it’s tough to really do this on a ‘one time’ 10 minute experience in a shop… so try it on, go away, come back again and repeat until you’re satisfied that it’s for you. Good luck !

      @@watchenthusiastlondon Thanks for the detailed answer. I knew I would be worth it to ask you for a watch opinion. The only thing that keeps me away from "100%"-ing the Nomos is the manual wound caliber. Is that a big "hassle" in contrast to an automatic caliber?

    • @watchenthusiastlondon
      @watchenthusiastlondon  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, that all depends on you, really… if, like me you enjoy the winding experience and firing up a watch, then no… it only takes a few seconds to do it and I enjoy and appreciate the ritual. But equally, I wore one watch only for the best part of 20 years and during that period, I wouldn’t have entertained the notion of having to wind a watch every day or so… It depends on how you feel and where you’re at on the ‘journey’…

    I bought the 'Moon', 'Mercury' and 'Saturn' as from a design point of view, these were the best looking in my opinion. I did study industrial design at university and have a design background, so I believe I made the best choices in regards to the aforementioned criterion. That said, I have to say the Omega + Swatch MoonSwatches are all cheap and nasty rubbish. Not even up to Swatch watch quality in my opinion, of which I have a small collection as a part of a large design collection I have compiled over decades of collecting, with many pieces from the 1960s through to the 1980s with a few pieces from the 1990s (some Swatch Watches in fact). Richard Sapper and Marco Zanuso are design gods in my opinion and are extremely well represented in my collection as well as taking up space in my small library of design books. Back to the topic at hand. These Omega + Swatch MoonSwatches feel like plastic rubbish and have taken up residence in my Swatch watch collection area as a curiosity and example of what I believe are classic examples of 'fashion victim' artefacts. As I intend to donate my entire collection to the design school I attended, I believe these will make for great teaching examples of tacky design, and how Omega risked sullying their reputation in the process. That said, I still intend to purchase the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Shades Co‑Axial Master Chronometer 38mm in 'Terracotta' (also love the 'Saffron') that I have been lusting over obsessively for some time now. I must say for a person of such discerning taste as yourself, I feel you too have become a fashion victim in this case and should hide this particular oddity at the back of your sock drawer post-haste. 😀

      @@watchenthusiastlondon I forgot to mention the fractions of a second sub dial is called a seconde foudroyante with a foudroyante hand. Seconde foudroyante dates from at least the 1870's and was developed for precise timing of sporting events, especially horse racing. “Foudre” is French for “lightning”, and this is the preferred name in English, along with “jumping seconds”, or more specifically, jumping seconds hand or sub dial. In German, this complication is known as “Blitzende Sekunde” (flashing second), while Italians call it “diavoletto”, meaning “little devil”, strangely enough.

    Since the movement doesn't have a sweep second hand for the chrono, I guess it makes sense that you need a way to measure the 10ths. On a watch like this, the chronograph is more of a novelty than a practical tool. Lots of failures of messaging all around, but I would guess that most people buying this will have no clue that anything even appears incorrect.
    I didn't even know about this watch until I was discussing the topic with an owner of a proper Omega moon watch. I immediately went online to see what it was. @alfieakaronaldog ? It's not instructions, it's called product description since it's on their website. It is minor in this case, but you do realize that misrepresenting your product to your customers is what leads to false advertising lawsuits? It's why companies are usually so adamant to make sure the product they are describing to their customer is accurate as it is literally illegal to do so both in the US and Canada and I'm sure just about everywhere else to some degree. And I'm glad you're enjoying the product with that dash of sarcasm at the end. 😉 But ironically, if you want a stunning product, compared to the swatch, the Chinese knockoff from Pagani Design PD-1701 is ironically higher quality than the moonswatch minus the Omega logo at 1/3rd the price. Now if you NEED that brand on your wrist then enjoy the Moonwatch looks for like 1/25 the cost. 👍

    My one issue with the moonswatch is the minute subdial. An issue which seemingly no one has addressed.. or bothered to perhaps.
    My issue is this; Why have a chronograph timing 10th of a second, and then only have 5-minute markers on the minute subdial?
    So effectively whilst you are able to time events to the 10th of a second, you’re forced to guess the number of minutes elapsed (to the nearest 5 min. marker on the minute subdial).
    A rather embarrassing blunder from the powerhouses Omega and Swatch. A blunder I would suspect corrected in future moonswatch iterations.
    Anyway, I greatly enjoy listening to your perspective and storytelling.
