  • My thoughts on the war of words between Draymond Green and Rasheed Wallace... Who would win in a 7 game series, the 2004 Detroit Pistons or the 2017 Golden State Warriors?? In this video, I do my best to answer that.

    Also, here is the link to my ultimate team series . . . We’re working on the 2K simulation at this very moment.

      @melvinhhcp3615 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The 04 Pistons were a fluke. That's why they never repeated or won again. They only got over because Malone reaggravated his knee injury. There was no other PF on the roster at that point to replace his points, passing, and interior defense. Then Payton was getting WASHED on the perimeter, hence Chauncey winning FMVP. Not mentioning any of this, makes any argument disingenuous.
      Detroit went 7 games with 04 New Jersey, the same Nets team that got swept by the Lakers in 02. Then the 05 Pistons lost to the Spurs in 7. The 04 Lakers beat them in 6, including 4 in a row to close the series.
      So what are we really talking about here? SMH

      none of those 04 teams had the firepower the warriors had, three of the greatest shooters ever.
      there's no way in stopping that 17 team, you can't double team anyone, or else you're leaving curry, klay, or Durant open.
      and that warriors bench was very strong as well with Livingston, Iggy, and David west. (to go along with the starters)

Not a soul on that Lakers team has an answer for KD and I think it's delusion at best to think Fisher is gonna survive a series chasing Steph Curry and be able to contribute hardly anything offensively. My initial gut reaction was that the Pistons would win in a close series, but after reflecting about it some more and seeing your case, I think it's more likely than not that the Warriors would win due to how hard they would be to stop (as you indicated, the Pistons would do a good job at slowing them down somewhat, but I don't think any team could shut them down completely) and the lack of a dominant center who could lead them to victory (as the rest of the team definitely can't match the Warriors offensively). The Warriors themselves, while not as great as the Pistons were on defense, were still pretty good defensively also. I think that six games is a good guess for how far the series would go.
    Great video, Jonny. I hope you have a nice week :).

    Firstly, I will say this. No team is unbeatable, because there is always a strategy that can be used to win if you are at least a good defensive unit.
    The main question for me would be which players on the Warriors need to be targeted to make the Warriors most ineffective? (Going on the starters alone: Draymond, Klay, and KD. Klay was not creating for himself of the dribble, KD is not a player who handles physicality well, and Draymond's facilitating needs to be neutralised. I am going to force Curry to try to do it mostly by himself. To carry out such a defensive effort requires exceptional discipline and mental strength. Did the 2004 Pistons have the personnel to execute such and approach? I would say yes. Did they have the mental strength to execute? I would say yes. Would it be enough to stop the Warriors? Maybe, maybe not, but off the cuff, I would try that or some variation of that.)

If they played in 2017, the Warriors would just drown them in 3 pointers and most of the country would change the channel before the first quarter. If they played in 2004, the Pistons would not let the Warriors off the toilet seat to wipe their rears. This team was defensively one of the best teams of all time. Ben Wallace would straight punk Draymond. The “splash brothers” would become the “kerplunk sisters”, because they would have the ball stolen everytime they went for three without those refs getting in the way.

    IMO there should have been some mention of the teams beyond the starting 5. These are 2 impressively deep teams. People forget Livingston, West, Barnes, Iggy and how important they were to that team. The Pistons had Okur, Williamson, Hunter, and Campbell, they only have the advantage at center. First. The 2004 Pistons are one of the best teams that I've ever seen. I say this as a Lakers fan. They had a center who is an all time great defender, surrounded by 4 guys who could put up over 20 on any given night, and all 4 could hit the game winner. The truth of this is that officiating has changed so much that it's like trying to compare college wrestling to the WWE. You can't say that the Rock is a better wrestler than a collegiate champion, or that a collegiate champion would hold the WWE belt. It's sad to say, but today's basketball has really deviated that far. So in 2004 my money is on the Pistons. In 2017 my money is on the Warriors. Luka Doncic straight arm extension pushes the defender in the chest on EVERY drive and NEVER gets called for it. Today's NBA isn't basketball. It's sports entertainment. It's the WWE equivalent of wrestling.

    I think the 2004 Pistons were like the ultimate team. They didn't necessarily have superstars per se on their team but they were great role players that complimented each other well and they knew how to work well together. They did this by out working and out hustling everyone on the court. Yeah the pace of play was slow but they were suffocating.
    I do think they get slightly overhyped though. Yeah they beat the Lakers super team that year but that Karl Malone was old and got injured. Gary Payton was also older and slower and became a liability at times because you don't really need lock down defense on this pistons team. I think this was also the series where Kobe wanted to prove he was just as much a superstar as Shaq and turned into an inefficient volume shooter.
    I honestly believe the 2017 Warriors would probably take this series 4-1. Just too much firepower and they are so good at forcing team to spread the floor and putting people on islands. The Pistons were a smothering team that would swarm the person with the ball. You can't really do that as much when you have Steph or Durant or Klay being the one left open.
    I will add a caveat that if this was is under 2004 rules then the Pistons have a better shot. The thing is though I think they could find a solution for either Steph or Durant but not both.

  • @cuernimus
    @cuernimus 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    I think they are talking past each other. Hard defense hurts deep shots the most, as slight tips and flinches are going to be compounded over the distance traveled. And the Warriors are not going to be out rebounding the Pistons. That said, in 2017's game, you'd be lucky to make the playoffs on defense alone. So if they played in 2004, I'd say the Pistons win in 5 or 6 games against the Warriors. If they played in 2017, the Warriors still win the Finals because (I'm being generous) the Pistons get eliminated in the first round.

Tayshaun as good as he was wasn't an on ball creator like that, same with sheed and Ben is almost a liability on offense. Lindsey Hunter, McDyess, and I believe Darvin Ham(I'd have to look at the roster) again aren't scorers. Yes they were very solid defenders especially Lindsey hunter who is criminally underrated but, they don't have instant offense off the bench either. On the flip side the Warriors have one of the greatest sixth men of all time, add David West and Javale Mcgee who provide quality minutes off the bench. Now going back to your assessment about it going 7 I respectfully disagree again as the pistons just don't have the offense to be able to overcome the Warriors defense. Usually but not always. There are numerous examples throughout the history of sports of a great defense beating a great offense. One of my favorite examples was the 95 Stanley cup between New Jersey and Detroit. The devils were the team that made the trap so prevalent during that era. They were a phenomenal defensive team. They went up against a powerhouse Detroit team that had a ridiculous amount of scoring talent. The devils didn't just win, they swept the friggin red wings. So a great defense is more than capable of dictating tempo and frustrating a great offense. In this particular scenario GS probably wins (for what it's worth because I hate the 2010s superteam era of the NBA because of crap like Durant going to GS and think it's ridiculous to put them against anyone because with Durant they are just a 2k dream team). He is 6.6ft who cant guard SHEED who could shoot and post up and was 6.10ft.
    B.WALLACE could move his feet and was a great defender..he would prevent drives to the basket and make GSW just a shooting team.

    Gotta push back on that zaza take. Zaza was not getting heavy minutes in that playoff run. It’s not as simple as having an offensively good enough center to take advantage. It’s about having a center mobile enough to stay on the floor defensively while being a scoring threat. When the warriors went small they ran immobile centers off the court bc those bigs would get switched onto Steph & be bbq chicken. 3>2.

    There is pace of play context, but the Warriors wouldn’t go down all those possessions. They would continue running their pace, which would absolutely tire out the Pistons. Players from that era, especially the big we’re not gonna be in the kind of shape that the Warriors opponents needed to be in to compete for the entire game.

    The 04 Pistons were great defensively but got incredibly lucky by playing the Lakers for the title. The 04 Lakers were a catastrophe. Kobe was out all the time with a controversial case. Shaq was in the worst shape of his career. The team was never on the same page. It's honestly a miracle they even made the finals.

    It depends on the rules. If we’re playing by 2004 rules the pistons win period. KD folds with physical defense… remember what Boston did to him and Kyrie. There’s no air space rules to protect shooters so Steph and clay are getting an entirely different level of contests on their jumpers. Those moving screens are getting met with extreme physicality and Draymond will get his azz beat for getting his n Ben’s or Sheed’s face. They also had Jason Maxiel. This is the malice at the palace team and the whole squad had black air force 1 energy. Relax. Draymond would get himself suspended quick.

    Excellent breakdown. I will add that I think RIP and Curry would check each other as well as Klay and Chauncey would check each other.
    That Pistons were a very unselfish team and offensively took advantage of the best match each night. In this series the pistons would have 3 favorable match ups were the warriors only have 2. Nobody on the Pistons can guard Curry or Durant. And whoever Curry, Durant, and ZaZa are guarding is a very favorable match up for the Pistons.
    The Pistons had the better deeper bench with veteran guys.
    The way the Pistons played defense was straight man to man with no help except Ben could freelance. So Curry and Durant would get their buckets but the other guys would be locked down. So I have the Pistons in 6.

      Curry and Durant in foul trouble. Curry too weak to guard Chauncey and too short to guard anyone else. KD can guard Prince, but he will spend a lot of time on Sheed.

    Wouldn’t the argument be if Detroit can run the defensive sets they want that it would impact the warriors pace negatively?

  • @Artycuno
    @Artycuno 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I think using pace of play is a little flawed in this scenario. It's not like either team will just shoot more or less threes or change how they stylistically play.
    They'll each play their own game and quite frankly, the warriors were where they're at because of how optimized the players and game evolved.
    That being said, I wonder what pace vs pace has been like historically. Do high pace teams drop down to a lower paced match up? Or maybe it's the other way around or even somewhere in the middle? Which teams usually win?
