The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.

Jordan was basically a more efficient kawhi with a better jump shot, better finishing, better post moves and a 40 inch vertical. Oh and he actually plays almost every game of the season.

He made a video of finding the player that is closest to MJ. From stature, shot selection, hand size etc and Kawhi was closest modern player to MJ. And MJ obviously has few things to his advantage of being a better player. But some of these kids try to say MJ would just be an avg player in todays league. Insane how ignorant ppl can be

@@jakemurphy3352 go watch the tape. kawhi plays the most similarly to MJ that I’ve seen since Kobe. They’re both very strong and athletic and have huge hands, but also very methodical in getting to their spots and have great foot work. MJ was obviously more athletic and better offensively. And just for clarity I’m talking about 96-98 MJ rather than his younger self who relied more on his quick first step to create separation.

Yup. Now its a 3pt contest and the game is getting positionless. Every team plays the same system. Centers wanna play like guards.
Especially the 80s and early 90s, before the pro sports teams went corporate, fleeced taxpayers for another generation of free stadiums, jacked prices for everything at the game sky high, and priced out all the fans who weren't willing to sacrifice their childrens' futures on season tickets.
What it was like to go to a pro sports game in the 80s or prior, and what it's like now, are two entirely different things, catering to two entirely different sets of fans that have almost nothing to do with each other.

There is and has never been a player this good since. You watch this video and other Jordan highlights and it’s strikingly clear how good of a basketball player he was and how much better he was than anyone else in any generation.

An underrated aspect of Jordan was his HANDS. Jordan’s hands are the size of baseball gloves! This allowed him to protect the ball better. Catch passes cleanly. Jordan could manipulate the ball in the air better than other players because his one hand could wrap around the basketball. Jordan’s hands helped allow the acrobatic shots of His Airness.

@northaldine5116 his early years when he finally made it to the NBA, and his first 3-peat when his team wasn't as stacked as it was during his second 3-peat. Right before they got Phil Jackson to coach the team, there was a fun span when Jordan played point guard for their team, putting up Westbrook type box scores with 30 point triple doubles. During that late-season stretch in 1989, Jordan played 24 games as the Chicago starting point guard. He averaged 30.4 points, 9.2 rebounds, 10.7 assists, and 2.5 steals per game while shooting . 498 from the floor. During this span of his career he was the Goat. His points, and points generated off assists, when taking into account his field goal attempts were at an absolute legendary level that (still lower than Jokic's though for comparison) (total points generated) divided by (field goal attempts plus turn overs) - players that score a lot, get a lot of assists, while shooting a low amount of FGA, and having a low amount of turnovers dominate this.
I still remember the game when Michael Jordan said "This one's for you baby" to Dikembe Mutombo and made a free throw with his eyes closed.
And when he dunked on him and gave Mutombo his finger wave against him! ☝️
Hilarious how these younger fans think a man who air balls free throws and dribbles the ball off his foot should be discussed in conversations about who the goat is.

Jordan made everyone on the court play better. He brought a swagger to the game that everyone tried to emulate. If he played today other teams would learn to play better. A rising tide raises all ships.
If you can't touch him up, he's getting to the rim. There's a reason why the Jordan rules were invented. With today's rules, there is no way to defend a guy like him.

MJ's impact as a PG and his performance the day of the shrug are 2 amazing statements about his talent.
35 points on the first half while not playing for 6 minutes, and hitting 6 threes, that's incredible. There is a guy today that if he drained 6 threes and put 30 on the table by the first half, would be considered by his fans as a shooter just as good as Steph Curry, and the undisputed goat, Jordan did it out of pettiness.
As far as Basketball, this is one of the most comprehensive videos I've ever seen. Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan are the two greatest Basketball players of all time, period!

MJ's '88 season holds a place in my heart not just because of the absolutely insane achievements he reached that season, but also because he did it all in my favourite shoes: the Air Jordan III "white/cement".

Another thing that never gets mentioned is that Jordan knew he had to get a certain amount of the Bulls points in order for them to win, that said with the league scoring increasing by nearly 20 points, that means he'd know before the game started - his final points goal would have to increase for the Bulls to win! Michael controlled the game! He knew going in what he'd have to do for the Bulls to win - nobody did it better - and nobody beats him with talent like he had during his 6 Championship years!

Everyone knows they have to get a certain amount of everything. Points assist, rebounds ext. Doesn't mean they will. Aside from that I think Jordan would definitely average anywhere from 36 to 40 no questions asked.

Jordan averaged almost 33 points up till his first retirement. So that's 9 years if he plays the season he retired and the one he only played like 17 games. That's at least 11 seasons where he realistically averages 33. I think in todays game the way it is played he very well could of averaged 36. Not because I think he's god. Also, in 2018 the NBA changed a rule. When grabbing an offensive rebound, the shot clock gets reset to 14 secs. The old rule was 24 secs. This alone creates more possessions and shots leading to more pts.

@SkyRiseDon 1. Jordan has 10 scoring titles, 6 championships, 5 mvps, highest scoring season other than Wilt, highest career PPG ever. KD does have better 3pt shooting than Jordan, but does that matter? Jordan was scoring the most, and scoring the largest percentage of his teams points while doing it. Bird didn't get more free throws because he didn't drive to the hoop as much as Jordan, that's where Jordan fouls came from. He was the greatest slasher of all time as well as one of the greatest low post and mid range shooters of all time as well. Larry Bird shot more face up jumpers from the triple threat position than anything and got fouled less because of it. Jordan and Bird both played in the same era and Bird didn't outscore Jordan so I don't know what you mean here.
2. All you need to do is watch video footage to see that the paint was never empty during Jordans career, so this whole nonsense about Jordan faced weak interior defense and weak help defense because of the illegal defense rules is just that, nonsense. The illegal defense rule was hard to enforce and lots of teams, especially the best defensive teams hedged lots of plays and there was no defensive 3 second rule at the time so big could camp in the lane as long as they were actively "guarding" someone. Most drives to the paint jordan faced 2 or 3 defenders at a time. Lack of 3pt shooting also meant that most defenders were within range to help very quickly.
The game is much more open nowadays because so many players are threats from 3pt range, so the zone is useless when you have to tightly defend 3-4 even 5 players at the 3pt line. Alot of players can shoot from 30+ feet now.
Saying Jordan got defended by slow white guys or undersized guards is a terrible point, just say you're racist. Must be pretty mad that two uathletic white guys are tearing up the nba right now.
I love how this video puts on display the great teams and players Jordan had to face and go through to deserve this legacy. Many (younger) fans dismiss these players because they didn’t see it. Guys like Larry, Malone, and even Kemp would cause serious problems in todays NBA. And Mike was the man in a this iconic era!
Mike was the man in the 90’s he was a non factor in the 80’s. Sure he could score, but no one was worried about MJ in the 80’s. They were worried about Magic, Bird, Isiah, and Dr. J. MJ owned the decade those guys didn’t play in. Mike never beat Bird! Broken back, and heel spurs he never beat Bird.

Don't be silly. Larry dominated jordan. Put prime giannis in the 90s and he scores 60 points a game and wins 10 rings. Jordan sold a bunch of shoes so people over value his playing days. I grew up a Jordan fan... but he wouldn't score 30 in today's league... let alone 50.

This is probably one of the best overlooks of MJ I've come across on TH-cam. This vid breaks down MJ's whole body of work, not just Great but the horrible ones as well (not too many of them).
I was born in Chicago in 1990, so while I wasn’t really conscious enough to remember the first three championships, I certainly remember the second. Being in Chicago during that time, the atmosphere was just insane. Everyone in school had Bulls or Jordan themed clothes, I used to have a book about him as a kid. I remember watching the playoffs, the finals. Everyone wondered what he would do that night, what kind of crazy move he would pull off. The entire city would literally come to a standstill.
I think we can sometimes attribute this to the technology of the time too. There wasn’t much internet, no social media, rudimentary cell phones with no texting. So if you wanted something to watch, Jordan was the answer.
All I know is I hit the jackpot. The greatest of all time played for my team, in my city, during my childhood. It was something truly special.
Tell me about it, the closest time to feeling that electric energy in Chicago was Rose in the MVP season. It felt like that Jordan era was back in Chicago again for a brief second. I miss the Jordan era.

I'm just happy to say I had the privilege of growing up and watching m.j. play while he was still an active basketball player. And I tell you no one had the effect and impact jordan had on the court. Nor did anyone have his presence and I don't think anyone ever will. Kobe was the closest thing and he still wasn't jordan.

It's a true shame we don't have these early career games of MJ on video. I was watching NBA by this time in history. So I get it and remember hearing a lot of times, tapes were used multiple times to save money on many programs. Including the NBA. But man, it would be cool to see some of these early games. And see his playmaking and ball handling. 🤷

Great work as always, Johnny! Jordan has no peer! And, the 87-88 version was just ferocious! With all of his explosive athleticism he was beginning to become the refined scorer that we knew him as during the 90s!
Another thing people overlook is; Even during 90s MJ had the most free throw attempt and success numbers. And the thing is back then it was harder to get a faul call compare to Today.
I mean during late 80s and early 90s Jordan was still a pristien shooter but back then he was more of a inside scorer. He was a diver to the hoop. And during those years he was getting 9 to 10 Free Throw attempt per game. And even during late 90s (when he turn to a more post shooter) he was attempting 7 to 9 FT per game.
For example, even a outside shooter like Devin Booker attempts 7, Tatum attemps almost 8,5 per game, Harden attempts (even old Harden) attempts near 9 per game. Doncic shots 10 FT per game and Giannis 12 per game.
If you put a predator and slasher like Prime MJ into this Era I can almost guarantee that almost 15 FT attempt per game for MJ. And due to his %84 average that means he can get at least 10 to 12 points per game just from his Free Throws. And Prime Jordan at his best 3pt shooting seasons were shooting 3 , 3pt shots per game with %37. Now triples that at least. He'll shoot 8 or 9 3pts in today's game. And with %37 that means at least 8 to 10 points per game from 3pts.
So just with FT and 3pt he got 18 to 22 points per game. And Prime MJ was attempting 21-23 2pt shots per game with %54 FG.
Since there is no camping big men and no handcheck that number can rise up to even 27-28 at least. And his percentage can rise up to %58 from %54 at least. But just for being realistic and humble lets say he is gonna attempt 25 2pt shots per game with %55 FG (cuz 28 shots with %58 cause 32 ppg and that could cause heartattack for Jordan haters or LBJ wankers)
And that means he'll get 27,5 points per game from 2pt attempts.
So at bare minimum at least 25 points from 2 point shots + at least 8 points from 3pt shots + at least 10 points from Free Throws.
Even with the minimum / nerfed numbers he is easily getting 43 points per game with %56+ 2pt with %37-38 3pt and %84-85 FT with over %53 FG at least.
So in today's NBA prime MJ "at least" 43 ppg 9rpg 9 apg 3 spg 1 bpg %53+ FG kinda guy ... Deal with it.

@@fortynights1513 It was the peak era for bigs, who most teams still largely built their offenses around even if the center(and sometimes power forward) might not have been the best scorer. It was an "inside/out" style of offense as opposed to today which is predominantly "outside/in". Most teams also played more halfcourt sets rather than the fast break style that dominated the 80s. Casuals or general dumbasses will say the pace slowed because the players were trash, but they either don't understand that era(probably because they were too young to have seen it) or are being intentionally ignorant because they need to find a way to diminish Jordan.

Thanks for answering my first question. I asked about the pace drop because everyone mentions it declined in the mid 90’s, but nobody ever explains why.
Everyone mentions scoring increases a bit when hand checking is removed around 04-05, and when players shoot threes more often in the last decade or so.
But the drop in the 90’s nobody has described why. I guess the bigs in the 80’s weren’t as good as those in the 90’s as a group.
@@fortynights1513 In the 80s some teams liked to run fast breaks and the pace was similar to the last 10 or so years. Up until the mid 2000s the game was usually focused on the big man. If you look at all the great centers throughout history, many of them played before that time. It was around then when some rule changes the league put in place to increase scoring that the traditional center started to get phased out in favor of perimeter players. Historically the formula for winning championships involved having a dominant big man ideally paired with an elite wing but the big man being more important. It was incredibly rare for a team to win a title without a dominant big or at the very least a front court committee(like the Bad Boy Pistons), and any team that did win one without that didn't sustain the success. The Bulls winning as much as they did and the way they did was unheard of at the time, and that gets lost on younger fans that don't really have a strong grasp on NBA history. Nowadays it's normal for teams to win built around perimeter players, and a lot of fans look at the past through the modern lens they look at the game today and that's just wrong. Even after Jordan retired, the game reverted back to needing that elite big with San Antonio and LA Lakers winning most of the titles built around one.
I lived thru that era.....MJ was so far ahead of his time...He became so good he was a phenomenon and everyone couldn't deny his greatness. People were always left in awe even when they were for the opposing team

This is why raw stats of all time greats shouldn't be compared straight up... There are so many nuances in different eras that affect their stats. This is why winning should be the ultimate measurement, along with impact evaluation, because their stats will be close regardless... By just looking at stats, Wilt should be the ultimate GOAT...

In my opinion the overall team results (championships and how far you go in the playoffs with their contexts) are worth considering, and while I agree that comparing stats straight up can be very flawed, I would argue that statistical performance is worth acknowledging too.
Would it be fair to compare how well everyone compared to their peers to one another?
Ex: Players who average 30 points per game today might not compare quite as well to those who average 30 per game 15-20 years ago because scoring averages were higher in the later year, but those who averaged say 15 rebounds per game today would compare better to someone who put up that many in the 70’s or earlier because there are fewer missed shots, and thus fewer opportunities to get a rebound.

I really like how you covered game 1 of the Blazers series or “The Shrug Game.” I’m with you, Jonny, in that I wish The Last Dance would’ve given it a little more attention and talk about the media chatter and MJ’s quote about the 3 point shooting and also include that sequence you included with the Chicago Stadium absolutely going crazy with Pippen’s steal, his missed layup with MJ’s put-back dunk, Clyde’s missed 3, and Jordan’s 6th 3. I love hearing the stadium roar like that. I miss it.
