40 years ago, when I was a kid, my family moved cross country from Seattle to NYC. My dad rented a full size U Haul truck and towed the family car. We took it slowly and stopped at all the major tourist spots: Yosemite, Badlands, Mt Rushmore and so much more. We stayed in motels but mainly slept in the back of the Uhaul. Watching this video brought back so many happy memories of those innocent times. Thanks Steve.
2 years later and I now consider this a classic episode of Camping with Steve. It's always nice to come back to these videos. I hope you're doing good Steve! 👍
Steve I wanna let you know I found you in a pretty tough time for me I was living out of my car and it was hard and seeing you camping like this made me feel a little more human I really appreciate all that you do you are amazing
You're not alone. I've been homeless. Now, I am well-situated. Life rolls like that. Sleeping in a car doesn't mean you're a drug-addled street dweller.
Hang in there buddy, but seriously I know from experience that things like that make you tougher than the person next to you, struggle breeds greatness
@Lord ballsac the 2nd you would be surprised at how difficult it can be to find somewhere to park in this day and age. Even half the walmarts dont allow it anymore
I was complaining about having to rent the Uhaul I'm using now. Not anymore, you rock with good ideas. I'll get my Durango back on Friday but I'll remember this great idea. I have Grandboys who would love to camp in the Summer.
To be fair, that's probably 90% of their returns... Lots of food and bad hygiene goes on in rental vans because people usually are in a hurry and moving heavy stuff when they rent them.
Hey Steve. The day before thanksgiving (American) I had a stroke at 37. I've had a lot of time to kill and I discovered your videos. You're the first channel I ever subscribed to. Thanks for keeping me sane.
Ya know Steve. When it's minus 40 I'm okay with you posting a video of you camping in your living room with the thermostat set to plus 40. I'll watch. You're an entertaining guy. No reason to freeze to death for a video.
I work at a non-profit that serves a lot of houseless folks and I was expecting to see a lot of negativity in the comments, but I'm pleasantly surprised!
Go Steve! I once moved to Australia from England and lived in a 89 4x4, Mitsibusushi Pajero lol. Once I brought it I was broke, ripped out the rear seats got some lumber n built a bed. I drove halfway around Oz chasing the sun living my best life. I really miss Tasmania, the outback and the ocean. After that I lived in New Zealand, S E Asia and now I live in Saskatoon, Sk, Canada. About 4.5 hours from Hunkering down. A few weeks back she got down to -55 with windchill, in OZ I got to +47. I miss the road. Steve, I know that feeling when ya trying to get ya head down and the police bang on the window or people come out the bush and attack you lol. People don’t realize how much skill it takes to live like this, ain’t no book to teach you. Just many hard nights. Some of the best nights of my life looking back. When people can’t work but I got a job in a 5 star hotel living in a 4x4 in 37 degrees in the Northern Territory. Got the job from calling random companies in Yellow Pages. The extreme heat was my iron and my mirror helped me shave. My shower was on the beach once the sun went down. Never take for granted toilets, running water, good night sleep, hot meals, shade, a few dollars in ya back pocket, a job when you need it, a car that starts, fire, and good health. 2.41am and Steve got me thinking lol. Feeling grateful, lying next to my loving dog Lulu and patting her head. When the sun comes up she’s going to get a long walk and I’m going to think more about those times. Been a tough week. Some basic tips for those new to this. Park on level ground! Pull up late and cook elsewhere Always leave the drivers seat empty and have keys at the ready for emergency bug outs. Have a tool for protection Have one area where if shit goes south you can find keys, torch, knife etc with ya eyes closed. Buy a good blanket n pillow. Keep lots of water Have a bag of rice, canned food on the ready at all times. A good lighter Propane topped up Good home made curtains to block the world out Little first aid kit A bucket A pack of Johnny’s Smokes n tea bags 🇬🇧 Copies of ..Best of Fleetwood Mac and Bruce the Boss and a random Scottish Bagpipe soundtrack. Oh, yeah, if you got the change some step 2’s I really do miss the open road. My advice Do dumb stuff now before you get older and more sensible. Stay away from debt Stay away from debt Stay away from debt I’m not a rich man but I own everything I have, I got a small nest egg and I like knowing if I want to/have to, I can pack a bag and ship out in the night. Still to this day I struggle to unpack and live in a house. I hide things under pillows etc. I feel uncomfortable having too many possessions. Stay safe people and never let anyone talk you out of adventures. One day hopefully when I’m older, In my last hours on this planet I won’t be thinking about cars n watches. It will be sleeping under the Milky Way, in deserts, forests, mountains, Prairies and watching the sunset on a deserted beach with the ocean singing, running from a killer hale storm, dancing naked to UB40 in the eye of a major storm drunk on red wine, swimming in crock infested lakes, doing 265KPH on my motorbike, jumping off killer cliffs in the outback and living in absolute wilderness. I should sleep now x
Living here in New Zealand your comment made me determined to make the best of this opportunity! In my part of the country, the temperature range is only from about -5 to +28 celsius
Thank you for sharing! Made me think of my own feelings of chasing an adventure . I live in suburban southern Cali but doesn't mean I can't have my own version of this . Makes me grateful for the fortunate and amazing life I have . Bless you for sharing ! Amazing read.

Steve, I'm only 21, and don't know much if anything about your personal life, but I feel like I can relate to you on so many levels. Your down to Earth videos are very relaxing and comforting. Man this reminds me when I was homeless for a year, living out of my car. Had a propane stove, slept at walmart, watched hockey on the laptop and free wifi. Believe it or not, sometimes I miss it. It really did feel like camping. Only I had the opposite problem being in Florida. The summers were brutal. Heat and humidity at night was tough.
Winter ‘09 in Tampa and Orlando were cold. Winter 2012 was nice. 80-85 degrees. 60 degree nights. Except for 1 week in February when it was 30s at night for a week. May through September is rough in a vehicle in Florida.

When i was homeless i slept outside -30 degrees celcius In an 8 man tent which wasnt ideal being so big. I cut several pine branches off and put them on the ground under my tent. I had probably about 4 1 quart paint cans that i put tea light candles in Lay the cans on there sides, produces more heat on the side then standing up right I survived lol
*PRO TIP #6* *A moving van can easily remain parked for DAYS on the street in front of, or in some cases, in the driveway of houses for sale (look for real estate sales signs). Obviously it also depends on the neighborhood.*
This is still one of my favorite camping with Steve videos. The good ol' days, when things weren't so complicated in the world. This one, and the corrugated pipe video. Love ya, Steve!
The drainage pipe was my first one. Interestingly, the Oakland, CA museum has a display of a small cut out one that you can sit in on a cushion. It is a demo of what people used in the 1930's during The Dust Bowl.
The meal Steve makes seems so rustic and simple, but I know from camping experience it's so Damn good. Best meal I ever had was a steak fajita marinated inside a ziplock bag. Cooked it all inside cast iron skillet over a freshly made camp fire....holy crap it tasted so good. Especially after a long day of canoe tripping and chopping wood. Those simple meals out in fresh air and on a camp site just taste extra delicious
Hell yeah, there's something so special about it! I suspect it's something about being closer to your food or appreciating it because of the abnormal surroundings, but idk. I do find that I get much more into cooking when I give myself some sort of restriction to work with, maybe even pretending I'm in a situation like a camping trip like that or on a super tight budget.
@@allaussietraveller9879 Yeah, sure gotta work for a bag of hotdogs you bought at the convenience store before getting to your campsite. Seriously, they taste better usually because the situation. Your body works on high alert in unfamiliar places. That's why vacations and stuff are usually your most vivid memories, and why people have trouble sleeping in places that aren't their home. Your body works on overdrive out of survival instinct, which means your tongue is working twice as hard too.
Also Waffle House if you are in the Southeastern US will let you park. They don't officially allow it but they also don't care especially if you eat there first.
I'm not sure why, but I can't stop watching this stuff. All you do is sleep in weird places, drink a beer, eat some food (like a giant Dagwood sandwich) and go to sleep. And yet, I'm fascinated.
Good idea! Most of us are paycheck to paycheck sometimes, didnt think of this one. When times were bad in the past, i thought about converting a box or bread truck to save dough. Pretty inconspicuous

Nicholas Shumka When I moved away from Manitoba, my first winter I couldn’t figure out why I felt something was missing or wrong. It wasn’t until I went back in the winter that I realized it was the crunching snow! Of all the things to miss! I think when you spend a lifetime listening and feeling that snow crunch, it’s like muscle memory or something.
I'm so glad that at 8:28 you talk about CO and O2 problems. I was worried that someone might try this, and they might not know about oxygen depletion and carbon monoxide poisoning. Love your video! Edited for grammar and clarity.
@@chefboyld1 There's a limited amount of O2 in a small, contained volume like a van. A small, propane powered heater is going to use a lot of O2 in the van to burn the propane. Someone could run out of O2 in a van like this. Our brain needs a lot of oxygen to survive. Regular air is 21% O2, and around 6% O2 in atmosphere is when people generally pass out and die. Another, possibly more important risk is carbon monoxide. Propane can partially burn and produce small amounts of CO. These small amounts of CO build up to in a closed system like a van. If I'm not mistaken, just 150 ppm (just 0.015%) can kill most people, and this is very easy to obtain if the heater is poorly burning in a small container like a van. Carbon monoxide works by attaching to hemoglobin 240 times better than regular O2. Very quickly our hemoglobin is stuck with carbon monoxide, and we lose the ability to take any oxygen into our brain and body. This makes us pass out and die again. CO poisoning still kills about 400 US citizens every year, and 50,000 US citizens visit the emergency department each year for CO poisoning.
@@chefboyld1 the heater needs oxygen to burn. So it’s taking away the oxygen in the car. It releases carbon monoxide. Plus he is using up the oxygen to breath. Carbon monoxide, what we breath out, kills us
@@0mfg0wnt We don't breath out carbon monoxide. We breathe out carbon dioxide which isn't toxic. Carbon monoxide however is, because it binds easier to the hemoglobin in our blood than oxygen, causing you to suffocate without even feeling anything.
I spoke with a local pastor about parking on the side of his building to sleep and have been there for four months without any issues. Something to consider
Be a gent, if it snows where you are: get a back of rock salt if you can afford it, or shovel the parking lot/sidewalk/entrance to the church as well, and/or rock salt the pathways. It helps your character and it’s just righteous to pay it forward when no one asked or when no one’s looking. God bless
Should have added a blanket on the ceiling of the van. All that heat is going to hit the ceiling and will minimize the heating effect. The easiest place to find a night spot is a truck stop....
Truck stops are great. I think you would have been OK at Walmart. It said no unattended vehicles. They don't wan't you parking your semi there while you are at home for the weekend or storing your RV there while you visit friends. I would have gone in that night, got some fried chicken and potato wedges. If they didn't run me off might have gone in for donuts in the morning.
In his video camping on a river he cooked an egg sandwich and used no seasoning at all. I could never. Bleh. Eating with that view might make up for it, but good god use some pepper at least. lol
Imagine walking by a van in the middle of the night and hearing “touch of olive oil, throwing in some stewing pork today! Not beef for once hard to believe!” 😂 reminds me of Spongebob and Patrick in the imagination box
@@dmitriyk1857 soo....does this have a home and just camps in weird places for youtube views? is is my first video, never seen the guy before. it seems kinda pointless. i mean...couldn't you find a motel room (with heat!) for a similar price as renting a uhaul and stressing over all this bullshit?
As a Texan, the reality in which you live blows my mind. We've had a handful of winter storms and I've experienced 10ish degrees F a couple of times in my life, but the idea of taking the coolest weather I've ever felt in my life, and going 50 degrees below that, is impossible for me to wrap my head around. I can't even imagine that kind of cold. The very idea of gaseous fuels becoming solid in a space where people live terrifies me. Kudos to you for putting up with and thriving in it, I'll stick to frying eggs on the hood of my car in August
Love your video. Your best bet for stealth camping in a cargo van like the Home Depot vans are apartment complexes. There are so many people living in the complexes that no one will question a cargo van in the parking lot. Most residents will assume that someone in the complex is moving in or out. Keep 'em coming.
i remember when I was broke and living in my 2000 toyota camry I was very uncomfortable so I decided to go in Walmart and buy a blowup flat pool lounge chair (the flat ones you lay on in the pool) thinking it was going to be super comfy to sleep on. I spent a good amount of time blowing it up not realizing that the cold air I am breathing into it will freeze during the november night. Rookie mistake lol. Don't buy anything blowup to sleep on during the winter lol.
makes me wonder like how a water bed has a temperature regulator if any air mattresses have a hot air version that has a internal fan/heater or something that keeps it nice and warm running off 12V or something.
Inflatable yes, but the properties of insulation apply. Sleeping pads for backcountry hiking and camping are often "blow-up" but with minimal air movement withing the pad. The best R-value I have seen on an affordable sleeping pad was R-4.4.
this is super important...one of the things that made car living the most difficult was finding a safe place to park. it's sad because you just want to sleep and not bother anyone/be bothered.
Yuhp i was living in my truck for months right after christmas when i lost everything after me n my child's mother split. I now have a spare truck in my driveway with camper ready to roll at a moments notice incase shit goes left again. My new lady says to sell it but ill be damned if i do😂

And always camping beside you in true stealth fashion. Paul.
Many years ago, I found it necessary to live in my car for three months or so. I discovered that church parking lots were places that one could park overnight and sleep unmolested.
I used the be the general manager of a major RV rental company in the US. I never considered renting a U-Haul for a fraction of the price! Of coarse there are challenges with that but you seemed to have covered those things. And with 6.2M views by this time, you're making a difference in today's world!
That was a smart move taken out the extra Insurance with a Mister buddy heater next to a 25 pound propane tank and cooking with an open flame using butane surround by blankets. That 150 dollars for insurance is a awesome deal instead of having to explain that to the insurance company.
I thought I was going crazy with nobody else pointing this out. Then to top it off he fucking *fries meat in oil* inside that thing. Yeah those oily fumes are going to mix super-well with the stench of propane and butane and make for great air quality to sleep in! Wtf is this guy even doing...
@@tomiantenna7279 thermodynamics brother. All the hot gasses and fumes will rise to the top of the van and exit through the open windows, fresh air will then be sucked into the van through any cracks and holes in the frame
Can you imagine walking your dog next to a parked up work van in -35 and all you can hear coming form inside is the hiss of frying and what sounds like a man presenting a cookery show. :D I wish UK had those winters!
>I wish UK had those Winters No you don't lol It's cool and all, and we all get to feel like survivalists every winter, but it's also brutal in even more ways than you'd think, and often dangerous to live in full time
@ Sir William I am from Finland where -30 to -40 C is not uncommon, and -20 happens for extended periods most years even in the south where 90% of the population are. I lived in the UK for 15 years, and trust me you do not want this weather there. The housing in the UK is built to barely withstand a -5 C cold snap for a day or 2. There are still an overwhelming number of dwellings with single glazing and uninsulated stone/concrete/blockwork walls. The two winters I saw snow in the UK between 1997 and 2012 were stupidly cold in the houses we lived in. In contrast, when we moved back to Finland in 2012, had the first winter there where it was -30 to -35 for about 2 months; our house was a decrepit shop from 1929, but it's made of logs with plain wood/putty double glazing so the cold conductivity is way less. Our house was so run down there was a mansize hole rotted through the floor all the way to the outside in one of the bedrooms and we had one 2kW mini heater and two fireplaces to heat the whole place. Still warmer than our winters in the UK.
@@loikkaset exactly. I live in Alberta(same province as steve), and that -40 cold snap was no joke. A couple of buildings here in down had burst water pipes from heating failures, and apparently alberta's grid was pushing 100-101% capacity because we had to use space heaters due to some our heating systems unable to keep up.
I did highway and campground maintenance in one of Alberta's major national parks, and the number of people that did this at camp sites or in church/hardware store parking lots was astounding.
There are other stealth campers but I thoroughly enjoy your content more because you chew with your mouth closed and it makes all the difference especially when I watch these with earbuds on. Bravo sir.

I'm guessing western Maine gets pretty chilly as well. People from the FL keys would think 20 was unlivable. Why is it a contest for Chicago to being colder than it is in reality? BTW, if you were correct, the facts that backed you up would've been put here as well. I'm about truth. Your response is trying to put forth your perception of coldness as a fact, which isn't cool. So, no you didn't forget, you just pretend how you want it to be and then try to reiterate it as if that makes a false statement more true. McDonald's freezers get colder than Chicago, which is also where McDonald's has their Hamburger University that managers get sent to from across the nation to train and learn. Chicago is a diverse place, but no where near one of the coldest U.S. continental cities unless you are going to add a qualifier of needing to be at least 2.5 million population, then you weed out most U.S. cities and maybe you could have said major metropolitan area.
Pull up late and cook elsewhere
Always leave the drivers seat empty and have keys at the ready for emergency bug outs.
Have a tool for protection
Have one area where if shit goes south you can find keys, torch, knife etc with ya eyes closed.
Buy a good blanket n pillow.
Keep lots of water
Have a bag of rice, canned food on the ready at all times.
A good lighter
Propane topped up
Good home made curtains to block the world out
Little first aid kit
A bucket
A pack of Johnny’s
Smokes n tea bags 🇬🇧
Copies of ..Best of Fleetwood Mac and Bruce the Boss and a random Scottish Bagpipe soundtrack.
Oh, yeah, if you got the change some step 2’s
I really do miss the open road.
My advice
Do dumb stuff now before you get older and more sensible.
Stay away from debt
Stay away from debt
Stay away from debt
I’m not a rich man but I own everything I have, I got a small nest egg and I like knowing if I want to/have to, I can pack a bag and ship out in the night.

I'm so glad that at 8:28 you talk about CO and O2 problems. I was worried that someone might try this, and they might not know about oxygen depletion and carbon monoxide poisoning. Love your video!
Edited for grammar and clarity.
I wouldn’t have known for sure. What causes this?
@@chefboyld1
There's a limited amount of O2 in a small, contained volume like a van.
Carbon monoxide, what we breath out, kills us
0
@@0mfg0wnt We don't breath out carbon monoxide. We breathe out carbon dioxide which isn't toxic. Carbon monoxide however is, because it binds easier to the hemoglobin in our blood than oxygen, causing you to suffocate without even feeling anything.

I have rented a number of u-haul vehicles over the years, but I never thought to camp inside one. Great video!
i remember when I was broke and living in my 2000 toyota camry I was very uncomfortable so I decided to go in Walmart and buy a blowup flat pool lounge chair (the flat ones you lay on in the pool) thinking it was going to be super comfy to sleep on. I spent a good amount of time blowing it up not realizing that the cold air I am breathing into it will freeze during the november night. Rookie mistake lol. Don't buy anything blowup to sleep on during the winter lol.
Oh no
makes me wonder like how a water bed has a temperature regulator if any air mattresses have a hot air version that has a internal fan/heater or something that keeps it nice and warm running off 12V or something.
I call BS.
Inflatable yes, but the properties of insulation apply. Sleeping pads for backcountry hiking and camping are often "blow-up" but with minimal air movement withing the pad. The best R-value I have seen on an affordable sleeping pad was R-4.4.
Wool my friends. costs a bit more but very warm and will keep you warm. Coming from a guy who lives in a fifth-wheel holiday trailer for 8 years now.
this is super important...one of the things that made car living the most difficult was finding a safe place to park. it's sad because you just want to sleep and not bother anyone/be bothered.
apparently youtube thinks im on the road to homelessness, so thats cool
Good luck
Lol.

Yuhp i was living in my truck for months right after christmas when i lost everything after me n my child's mother split. I now have a spare truck in my driveway with camper ready to roll at a moments notice incase shit goes left again. My new lady says to sell it but ill be damned if i do😂
I went camping with family as child, then didn’t care for it as I got older. After finding Steve and loving these videos, I think I’ll try to persuade wonderful husband to try some camping!
I’m learning a lot from Steve about Fahrenheit and Celsius I love it and the fact that there’s not much going on but it’s just always so wholesome I can’t stop watching!!
I’ll tell ya, these videos could be very handy for the newly homeless. It’s a life line.
or if you are a new contract worker and cannot afford to move to work so you need affordable accommodations for it.
@@oceanbytez847 Yes. Very informative
Hi to beautiful Edmonton, AB. When I first saw -35C I instantly thought of Edmonton. Then I recognized the road passing Canadian Tire and Homedepot 🙂
Anyone hating on how you camp is either way too pretentious or just jealous. Keep on--these are awesome.
Hey Steve. Ive been watching your channel for a long time and have been on your journey with you.. all be it from a distance and time zone. Hearing of your loss of your beautiful wife was incredibly sad knowing how hard it must be for you. Your happiness makes you who you are and it’s important to remember the happiness you provide for people all round the world. She will always be with you, she will always be there for you. And always camping beside you in true stealth fashion.
Paul.
Nice of you to leave this comment
The term is albeit, not all be it.
Many years ago, I found it necessary to live in my car for three months or so. I discovered that church parking lots were places that one could park overnight and sleep unmolested.
unless you were a 10yr old boy
NB: this varies widely from church to church
This varies between churches now. More “Home Town” churches don’t care and would even welcome you inside where as the newer ones shoo people away

I used the be the general manager of a major RV rental company in the US. I never considered renting a U-Haul for a fraction of the price! Of coarse there are challenges with that but you seemed to have covered those things. And with 6.2M views by this time, you're making a difference in today's world!

With all the technology in the world.... What did you do tonight? Me : "watched some dude camp in a Uhaul on the side of a road" 😅😂
😂
DJ SHaKa or fascinating character study
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Without said technology you would not be watching this guy camping!
Lol. 1am here
This man has the innocence of A 10 yr old, God bless Steve ❤😂
That was a smart move taken out the extra Insurance with a Mister buddy heater next to a 25 pound propane tank and cooking with an open flame using butane surround by blankets. That 150 dollars for insurance is a awesome deal instead of having to explain that to the insurance company.
😂
I thought I was going crazy with nobody else pointing this out. Then to top it off he fucking *fries meat in oil* inside that thing. Yeah those oily fumes are going to mix super-well with the stench of propane and butane and make for great air quality to sleep in! Wtf is this guy even doing...
Yeh man Steve has a death wish 😬
Great comment!! I laughed my ass off when I read that
@@tomiantenna7279 thermodynamics brother.
>I wish UK had those Winters
No you don't lol
It's cool and all, and we all get to feel like survivalists every winter, but it's also brutal in even more ways than you'd think, and often dangerous to live in full time
You can’t walk a dog in -35
You really don't. Trust me....

Man, this brings back memories… it’s nice to look back and see how far we’ve come. Keep your heads up folks, we’ll make it!
Wayyyy below freezing temperatures where people can freeze to death.
Steve: "This is the perfect weather for me to test out camping in a Van." 🤣
Thanks for sharing 😊, I just never thought about renting a van when I was a nomad, great idea sir
Again thanks for sharing.
I did highway and campground maintenance in one of Alberta's major national parks, and the number of people that did this at camp sites or in church/hardware store parking lots was astounding.
Good 💯 atleast some people are free from being slaves to our democtratic government.
20:45 when your heart drops and skips a beat simultaneously... 20:45 why we are all here with you (Steve Wallis), subscribed, and hunkered down.
Its like watching a thriller on Netflix..........Awesomeness.
There are other stealth campers but I thoroughly enjoy your content more because you chew with your mouth closed and it makes all the difference especially when I watch these with earbuds on. Bravo sir.
When snow makes that sound. You know its cold
In my family we call that crunchy cold.
As a Texan....These videos are a real eye-opener!!!! I'm glad I'm learning this cold weather stuff in the case that I need this! The one thing I am learning....it's good to know that there are some who would have no problem surviving Mars!!!
@@justmyself1000 seriously, waco here I've only seen snow twice. Winter kicks my ass. I could only imagine what the teens fell like yet alone in the negatives.

The Westcoast doesn't get cold?? Lol
I live in Chicago, one of the coldest cities in the U.S. and watching this guy just live life in -40 weather with no gloves is killing me.
did you just call chicago the coldest city in the US?
do you forget alaska exists and is US owned.
@@tom4208 No I didn't forget, as I said, one of the coldest, not the coldest.
@@BR-ng1kp 1991-2020 average low 18F, average days below 0F 6.5. No where near the coldest. Just could've said you were being a bit hyperbolic because you feel really cold in your city. Facts are facts. WI has many cities that get far colder than your lakeside chateau of a city. The UP of MI would get a chuckle out of your statement as well as the Dakotas and Montana.
Green Bay is definitely colder and considered a city to the people living there, just saying.
