Winter Camping Using Cheap Summer Gear, Is It Possible?

  • I tested whether or not it is possible to use normal summer camping gear in a winter situation. Summer gear right down to the sleeping bag I used. The Sleeping bag is a Woods Canmore 4LB fill which is what I use in the summer and shoulder seasons. The tent is a cheap-o Ozark Trail tent from you know where. I had a run of the mill thermarest that was on sale of course, and my rickety old folding chair.
Dinner was a delicious faux thanksgiving feast using all canned or boxed ingredients.
The campground actually had free firewood, hard to believe.

Please forgive me on the audio, the levels all sound good when I edit on my laptop but then they are way off when I listen on a TV. I'm going to get some headphones for setting audio levels. Any technical guys here know what headphones would be good for setting audio levels?

I grew up in a suburban area on Long Island but every summer we lived for 2 weeks up there. I got to experience so many awesome things many of my city dwelling friends never got to experience. You can easily turn a 3-season tent into a makeshift 4 season on using 2 mylar emergency blankets (that are a couple of bucks each. Put up the tent, but not the rain fly. Put one of the blankets on it, you can even add a blanket from home on top of that. Then put the rain fly on it. Use the second mylar blanket on the floor of the tent and you'd be surprised at how warm your summer tent can be in the winter.

These cheap tents often have poor ventilation and not very breathable fabric so it can get hot and sweaty even on a cool spring day, so this actually plays to the winter advantage. It’s nice, they have many different campgrounds with a ton of campsites, and they also have a very very nice one that’s geared more towards family with a huge playground and two huge ponds where kids can fish for free and if they catch a fish with a metal number tag they call it in abs receive a prize!!! @@adaydreamersfestielife it’s called AEP there are like 4-5 different types of campgrounds with multiple sites to pick from and it’s completely free. It’s nice they have different ponds to fish and the one has a huge playground for kids to play at and at Campground A they have two huge ponds for kids 16 and under to fish in and if they catch a tagged fish they can call a number and they can win prizes for those fish! It’s definitely worth checking out. It also has a memorial site called the big Muskie bucket which is a huge tool they used to make the camps!! Definitely would check it out! It’s out past a little town called Cumberland Ohio off state route 83 then onto state route 78 to go to the Muskie Bucket. I would give give directions but the last time I gave directions to their I got my oldest daughter lost lol but if you use Apple Maps or Google type in big Muskie bucket and it’ll take you to it and past the campgrounds!!

@15:40 Steve you said it. That is exactly what my dad strived to instill in myself and all my friends when I was growing up in Idaho during the early 2000’s. Picking blackberries and fishing in Hells Canyon, gold panning, picking morels in the spring, all formative experiences in my life and all done on the cheap. Camping was about being outside and friends. I’m more of a backcountry backpacking type, so I’ve been wondering what it was about your videos I find so great and I think you summed it up perfectly. It’s “leaning against a tree and eating a can a beans” a simple but grandly human experience. Love your videos, eventually when I get my own camping funds up I’ll be able to start donating to the beer fund. Keep killing it! On summer tents in winter - remember your blanket fort? Use a few old blankets to create a inner shell matching the tent walls and hanging from any gear loops on the inside, or sew in your own. The one thing is that the shell must not, as you know, touch the tent walls or risk drawing moisture through osmotically.
