Hi Steve, I notice this video is a couple years old. I've been watching you for about a year now, and I know you've learned a lot. I just want to mention something I've learned in camping across the country. When you build your fire, find and place two flat-top rocks beside the fire, spaced apart by about 2/3 the width of your pan, with the spaced area in a channel facing the fire. Once you get some coals, scoop some of them between the rocks. Now you can place your pan on the rocks and cook. At the same time you can put more wood on your original fire without disturbing your cooking, which gives you more light and heat. The coals will cook your food without covering your pans with soot, so you'll have easier cleanup. If you can't find rocks, a couple wet semi-rotten logs will work as well. Your meal will be long cooked before they catch fire.
I saw you use one of those tarps in another video a few months go, so the next time I went to see my fiancee (she lives in Ontario, I'm in New York) I got her to take me to Canadian Tire to get one. I love that place. Talk about stealth camping. Even your sporting goods stores are camouflaged as tire shops!
It's weird. Canadian Tire sells a lot of the same stuff as the other big box store's. I think the difference is, the others focus on high profile, seasonal products. Canadian Tire always seems to have other stuff too! What ever you need - hardware, paint, sporting goods, appliances, housewares, woodstoves, A/C, and of course a complete auto center; with tires. Not to mention tarps in all sizes - to cover a bucket, or to cover your house.
I can't think of anything more comforting then being in a tent or under a tarp with a small fire and the sound of rain hitting the tent outside. You crack me up Steve,,, you make such large amounts of food for just one guy! I love it
Great video! Something very satisfying about watching this dude camping under a stinking tarp during the middle of a stinking winter storm and cooking a damn bowl of hearty soup (and not a mention of any damn virus, well done)
I'm watching this in 2023, and it never gets old. Steve is such a great guy. I'd really like to sit and have a step2 with him. Bless you Steve, wherever you are 11/08/2023.
Hey, I know Im really late but I hope things are ok for you and that you are able to still take some time to relax and watch these videos for fun. I just woke up, In my cheap hammock on my balcony cause my phone was buzzing with a notification that Steve posted a video. Moved inside to the couch, cracked a step two and posted this comment.
@@campingwithsteve I own a lot of tarps. It's great. I also shop at the Canadian Tire. We call it crappie tire round in the capital. I got some cheap cast iron cookware, and a ton of charcoal there. It's also where I get most of my fishing rods. Everything goes on sale at C. Tire T least once a year for 60 or 70% off. I wait for that. I like how simple you make it, yet the food is good.
Steve I haven’t watched any of you videos for weeks, I have missed you so going back over some old ones, your voice calms me and I love your relaxed demeanour ❤️ I hope you are ok and mending from your broken heart sending love xxxx
took a couple of my buddies camping in Utah a few years ago on a 4th of July weekend. it started out terrible, too many people, to many kids, too crowded, etc. then it started raining. everyone packed up an left. we spent the night in my pop up camper listening to the rain, drinking beer, and playing cards. the next day 90% of the people were packed up and gone. it rained a couple of hours and then stopped and the sun came out. we pretty much had the place to ourselves after that. we fished and camped all weekend and had a great time. I still love camping in the rain. also here is another trick for you, take some matchlight charcoal with you, you can light it up and then stick the wood on top of it to start a fire. it works great for wet weather fire starting when all the wood is damp. and you can cook on it if you have too.
Watching Steve's videos as an avid camper/backpacker I see a lot of things that you should never do and other things that should be done differently/better. Then I realize that Steve gets by just fine and does no harm, and his voice just makes me put all my criticism to the side and just enjoy his videos for what they are. Thanks Steve!
I know it’s been a long time but what kind of things do you mean? As not a camper Steve is the only source of camping knowledge o have lol and I’m just interested to see where he could be doing things differently
I'm also curious. I noticed that, since most sleeping bags can be opened from the bottom and top, you could feed the hammock through it so it wasn't crushed under you inside the hammock, theoretically keeping you warmer. That is, if it's cold enough to bother. Oh, and more importantly, probably not cooking where you sleep lol
Oh thanks for reminding me of that Christmas I bought my man his coveted cast iron camping stew pot. He was so happy. Those cheap earrings he gave me didn’t last til Super Bowl Sunday. Good memories... all that matters 😉
When you started to cook and put the iron lid on the ground, i thought, he's not going to put it on the pot. And you did. A liitle bit of dirt and leaves makes the grub taste better. Sip. Sip. That was my step two, to ya. Cheers from NY.
Sorry I missed this one and a few others , been going through some health issues but anyway that soup you made looked so yummy . Love the cheap hammock . The tarp you used was way better than those blue tarps . The sound of rain hitting it just about put me to sleep . Glad to hear you are feeling better .
Steve, this reminds me of camping when I was younger (minus the Step 2). I'm approaching 60 but I have plans to get back out into nature. Until then, I will live vicariously thru you. Happy trails, mate!

I frikkin love Steve... Just a good, down to earth, normal bloke that enjoys getting outside and getting some fresh air. Steve, you're the man. If anyone posts negative comments on your videos they have no soul.
Awesome video, you are only the second person on you tube that we have watched who has mentioned and actually cleared the leaves around where you lit your fire and as Australians, it means allot to see this in videos. Our fire danger here, both during summer and winter can be extreme and when the total fire bans hit, we can't even use certain open flame stoves. If we do light anything, we have to clean 2 metres as a minimum from the edge of the fire and this is even using gas stoves. Thank you for a great channel. We enjoy watching all your videos.
You have earned every single ‘sub’ and ‘like’ camping in this weather! Yours is my favorite camping channel because you’re genuine and just so chill. Cheers to a step 2!
I have seriously made his camp recipes for my family dinners before. They always taste great. The camp nachos have been the favorite so far. Keep it up Steve
I like this channel. It's nice to have the kind of stealth camping etc content I'm interested without backhanded shilling and SHTF fear mongering. Awesome as always .
Tell beautiful wife hello.
I love it, in gale force winds Steve says "the wind is a little aggressive today" in his upbeat way. Love this man!
Indomitable spirit 😊
Seriously Steve is a great dude. There’s something to be said for guys that have perfectly good houses with clean dry beds and decide the second it starts raining to head out pop up a tarp and a hammock and sleep outdoors.
I suffer from insomnia but I found this Channel and I watch his shows every night before I go to sleep and pretend I'm on an adventure like him nice and comfy hunkered down and I fell asleep really fast👍😀
I do the same thing
try breathing in thru nose x 12
puts me to sleep everytime!
mouthbreathing is rubbish, the nose is where it's at, it's connected to the brain, specific types of nose breathing release the good chemicals
@@BotanyDegreePilkerton I agree 100% I practice nichiren Buddhism and I'm fond of the herb😂
And I dream that I'm camping... Nothing wrong with that ... Soooo restful..
Awesome!
I like this idea it makes good sense.
I'm an old Canadian exploration geologist and I love your videos!
Keep up the good work!!!!
@@ant-1382 Ohhhh. I always wondered why it was named that (I've never even been to Canada). 😊
It’s nice that you made enough stew for yourself and the twenty guys on the camera crew.

I can't think of anything more comforting then being in a tent or under a tarp with a small fire and the sound of rain hitting the tent outside.
You crack me up Steve,,, you make such large amounts of food for just one guy! I love it
Right! Best sound ever. So relaxing knowing what is happening outside while you are Hunkered Down in your sleeping gear.
Only thing better would be if it was a tin roof
@@squidwardo7074 oh you are definitely. That is by far the best thing ever.
@@squidwardo7074 or even better, a nice small fire under the tin roof while the falls

I know its not the same but I lost my father when I was 12 and getting out in the woods and nature always made me feel closer to him after he passed. Anyway, god bless you and hang in there.
I love the sound of rain on that tarp. I think I would sleep like a baby listening to that rain.
What a life eh?
Imagine being able to go camping as a side husle and being supported by your lovely wife!
Idk of another channel that bring as much peace to me as this man does.
Gosh, the rain, the fire and the sound of the cooking would be a heavenly ASMR "video".
Oh yes, just imagining it I can feel my muscles relax for a bit.
I’m going through one of the hardest nights of my life and I’m so happy I at least have Steve to sit here with me to crack open a step 2 with. You’re a true pal Steve please never stop doing what you do.
you wrote this 11 months ago.... I hope you are doing better now. Hope you're okay.
much love.
Steve is a pal for sure.
Hope you're hanging in there buddy
Hope you're doing alright, or even better than alright!
I just woke up, In my cheap hammock on my balcony cause my phone was buzzing with a notification that Steve posted a video. Moved inside to the couch, cracked a step two and posted this comment.
Kootenay true ale, from Columbia brewery. Surprised you asked!
@Tito Lagarto look out for big 🦶
In North Carolina Big 🦶 is made out of plywood and painted black and located all over especially near little convenience gas stations. LOL
There are people who spend 1000's of dollars on camping gear and eat cold soaked things. And then there's guys like Steve who actually know what's up.
A good tarp is always your best friend.
@@campingwithsteve That alternate blow-up bed pad looked super terrific.
@@campingwithsteve saved me this past weekend in Asheville, NC. Used the $3 Home Depot plastic paint drop cloth in a pinch.

I love the tag dangling from the can opener, what a legend you are
There's no appetite limit to how much fresh bread dipped in stew I can eat. Good choice.
My favorite seasons also. Just loving the rain sound on the tarp and imagining the scent of the fire and beef cooking. Aaaaah
I find it excruciating... really!
We appreciate you Steve, stay safe
"don't look to me for safety advice and... Don't do this."

Oh thanks for reminding me of that Christmas I bought my man his coveted cast iron camping stew pot. He was so happy. Those cheap earrings he gave me didn’t last til Super Bowl Sunday. Good memories... all that matters 😉
Him just eating a hardy stew, in a forest, cold, just felt so cozy and such a homey feel.
Wow this channel is rucking amazing.
You are the dad I never had, thanks Steve.
When you started to cook and put the iron lid on the ground, i thought, he's not going to put it on the pot. And you did. A liitle bit of dirt and leaves makes the grub taste better. Sip. Sip. That was my step two, to ya. Cheers from NY.

@@fu9793 ever heard of australia?
Awesome video, you are only the second person on you tube that we have watched who has mentioned and actually cleared the leaves around where you lit your fire and as Australians, it means allot to see this in videos. Our fire danger here, both during summer and winter can be extreme and when the total fire bans hit, we can't even use certain open flame stoves. If we do light anything, we have to clean 2 metres as a minimum from the edge of the fire and this is even using gas stoves. Thank you for a great channel. We enjoy watching all your videos.
Just wonderful.
Please don't stop Steve.
