Tip: you don't even need the 🔨 I just light a 🕯️ and heat up the nail & just push it through the plastic. Also if you have an awl you can heat the tip of the awl the same way 🕯️
I started Black Seeded Simpson, Red Salad Bowl, spinach, and kale 4 weeks ago in some storage containers, and put them under the lights I use to start my seedlings in the spring. Those lights don't need to rest! They can work right through the winter! After about a month, I had my first harvest! It is so satisfying to go in and snip my greens , give them a little rinse, and let them chill a little in the fridge before putting together my salad. Keep spreading the word that you can keep gardening through the winter!
...and never drill in the direct center of a rigid plastic container- that's the stress point... it will eventually give way or crack in its first season.
Or if using a hammer and a nail, keep the container right side up, place it on a piece of wood and hammer the nail through the plastic. When it reaches the wood, stop hammering and put the nail out straight up.

I just got a bunch of seeds and a fee grow bags for my potatoes and dwarf fruit trees. I'm growing everything inside. I will have the vine plants growing up and around a frame of one of those tent like stands that the wind had ripped up. the frame is good and sturdy. On the top of it I can picture my grapes growing up there. Havent figured out how. Thanks for the shoebox idea. I bought 32 of them last year and only used five from the box. I'm so excited! its 9:32 pm and I'm going to pull them out and get to hammering and planting! Lol! You are an AWESOME lady!!!
Nice content video and your presentation is calm. I watched without even speeds up video. I made a DIY container bin which inside i fully paste it with aluminium foil, and my light i kind of set it on the bin lid so all the light will concentrate inside the bin with minimal light spreads out of the bin. I left some space on bin sides to allow ventilation.
Started growing my lettuces, spinach, kale, arugula and mustard greens in pots outdoors. I’ve had to cover them several times this fall. You all are out of Trifecta and worm castings so I ordered another brand from Amazon. Now looking to see where I can place them indoors to get enough sunlight. I will keep you posted. Aldi sells THE BEST thick study chicken clear plastic meat trays. I use them for water trays on so many plants. They hold up very well. Family packs are the best.
I grew my microgreens indoor in coco coir recently. They grew to about 2" to 4" tall, I had 18 4" pots, then the dreaded surface mold arrived. I harvested the tops and put them in a mason jar in the fridge and I am enjoying them daily on my dinner salad. There is a cure for the mold that I learned about several days later. Not too late to start again. Thanks for all your videos and the knowledge you share.

Just drill the bottom plastic, use a crafting solder iron or heat a nail to poke holes. OR Hammer the inside box on a board IF YOU MUST. Home made 2:1 Peat moss/ perlite mix is sooooooo much cheaper. Just wet peat moss so it become absorbent then add the perlite. I add a little bit of Dr Earth dry organic fertilizer. You only need a tablespoon or so in a box this size. My preferred way is to use a 20-20-20 1/2 strength liquid fertilizer to water and WATCH IT GROW. 😉
I have been feeling really depressed about not having a garden to care for. I would just look out side at my empty dead garden ( im in zone 7, NYC) and had to stop myself from crying. I am going to try these indoor lettuce and see what happens. I am really excited about the possibility. Thank you!!
First time lettuce grower here. Harvested mesclun mixed greens for a salad a few weeks ago and it was the best tasting lettuce I've ever had! Now I got the itch and have Romaine and other mixed greens going.
This is a great video although I'm late to the party. (Aug.5, 2019) This is my first year growing lettuce in a container but it's great. They look pretty, I have fresh produce, and don't have to worry about the food recalls. I will be trying your suggestions for growing indoors over winter since I live in Wisconsin. Thank you!!
Nice video Kim. I love growing indoors because I can use natures refrigerator and only cut lettuce, spinach, kale when I need it. Also no need to have to worry about washing it off. On top of that it's only a few steps away. Oh, and one other thing, you can use a drill rather than using a nail and Hammer I found it works much better. Just shake any of the shavings that you get out. Have a nice day. 😎😎😎
Suggestion for plastic containers... Don't turn upside down. If it is big enough like one on video hit nail when bottom is on a hard surface. Your odds of cracking much better. Or heat nail and melt through.
i use kitty litter jugs on deck for lettuces. soldering iron is good for making holes in containers. the one i have was in tool box for years, never used, but now it stays handy in my gardening gear. the big clear juice jugs are useful as well.
You are very generous to share your experiences regarding planting but mostly focus on gardening tools for selling that is inevitable, but I'd like to ask you please mention about important issues as well such the number of days for germination that you haven't mention in this video and time of watering and so on. If u used plastic container, i suggest to burn your nail on candle/stove then pierce it on your container and u will get nice hole without cracking your plastic container

i just planted seeds the other day and they already sprouted except a few. so i added more seeds, but then the original seeds sprouted. so in those cells its not a mix of ball and strawberry spinach. oh well. im also cooking my first thanksgiving this year. and im using lots of garden fresh herbs

I laughed reading this because I do the same exact thing! LOL I'm always impatient when gardening. I want things to sprout in no time! I found easier ways to germinate quicker, by just constantly keeping that soil really moist at all times during germination, in a really sunny location off the bat. Happy growing your lettuce! I love growing my Gourmet Blend mix which has that red salad bowl lettuce in it. So delicious all together I agree!. That red Romaine looks so great and I really need to get some of those soon lol. I'm waiting on some much-needed finances so I can re invest in my garden to be able to donate the produce I grow to the homeless shelters in need. I will definitly keep you in mind to order from in the future! I live in Fl and have been growing for about 7yrs. It's such a passion of mine and I love to help anyone I can however I can! Hi, I'm using the bottom ends of romaine in the bottom ends of celery I put a little honey across the tops and they're growing quite well in water. I just wanted to plant them in some soil and see how that goes but they look pretty good.

Hello Sweet December, thanks for following along, so glad you are growing greens inside - good for you! You can plant one container with seeds, then plant another small container a few weeks later. When the first container is ready (3-4 weeks) harvest with the cut and come again method, pinching off the outer leaves, new leaves will grow back. After several harvests, the plants in the first container will start looking ratty, pull out the plants and plant new seeds. If you time it right, the 2nd container will be just about ready to harvest when the first one is done. Just keep repeating this process with 2 o 3 containers to have a continual supply. Hope the helps!
I’m late to the party here, but hopefully you see this. With leaf lettuce, you can cut off the outside leaves. The new leaves will grow out, and when they’re a good size, you cut the outermost leaves again. You need several plants because you’re only cutting a few from each plant, but you can harvest them many times before you need to replant.
Hi Kim! I'm a native Californian like you, but I live now in Italy (very challenging climate to grow in- especially while trying to learn!). I love so much your and Gary's videos. I have learned so much and have been inspired by you to take on gardening, thank you! I have a question: I love, too, those beautiful metal containers, but don't they get rusty when you have to water your seeds/ plants, also, with the humidity? Do you treat them with a sealer? I have thought of that, but didn't want to add any chemicals to anything I would be growing to eat. Did you have any rust issues in using them? Thank you!
What seeds did you plant that you’re having trouble thinning? I plant too many lettuce seeds on purpose because they’re tiny and the packets have so many. Then I eat what I thinned. It’s usually the best when they’re baby leaves.
Great video thank you! I was wondering about the plastic containers though. I have so many of them lying around and I'd like to use them but I'm a little nervous about the chemicals from the plastic leaching into the dirt and then into the plants. Is this a valid concern ? I really want to make use of all my containers!!
Instead of using a hammer or a drill, use the same nail and hold it with a pair of pliers or drive the nail through a piece of scrap wood and just heat it up,with a lighter. I'm a wood worker so i drive nails through scrap wood, then I shape the scrap wood to make it comfortable and voila, it's an actual tool. I use a grill lighter versus a cigarette lighter so my thumb is not right next to the flame

I just recently bought your book and what a great book and read for a newbie gardener (started our first veggie garden in 2019). I am trying to start seeds this year as well and your light video was great and I’m all set up for when I start my seeds. But I have decided to start lettuce indoors until I can start seeding and planting in the garden. I do have a question, after everything is done should I put a clear cover over the container until the seeds start to sprout? Like a greenhouse.
In some videos I watched they added fertilizer or other stuff to the soil, but you didn't. Is a bag of potting mix all we need? How long can you use the soil in you pot before you have to replace it? Just replace it with new soil, or add nutrients every so often?
Hi kim, thanks for the helpful video! I now cannot wait until the weather cools down so I could grow lettuce! QUESTION- how do I control and prevent the aphids!! I got so many inchworms and aphids the last time I grew lettuce in my garden and that prevented me from harvesting anything. I've also tried using a neem oil spray but that only killed my plants! Please let me know what should I do, so I could grow lettuce without having that problem again this Fall. Thank you
Hi Jocelyn! You can first just spray them off with water and a little dawn dish soap. Next if they return spray with Neem oil - it must be repeated once per week for 3 weeks. It will NOT kill on contact but will interrupts their life cycle- you can also spray it preventively before you ever see the bugs and give you a healthier plant overall!! I get my Neem Oil from The Rusted Garden- it has the special ingredient that interrupts the life cycle where the big box stores do not. Hope this helps!
Must you not put another tray under that one that has the soil and the holes in it so it does not drip out the water also does the Lettuce have to be bottom wartered also.? Thanks for sharing etc

For drain holes in plastic containers, heat the tip of the nail and melt the hole through. Hammer and nail may crack the container.

It's too hot where I live to grow lettuce or any greens outdoors unless its Oct-Feb. I want to try this!

i just planted seeds the other day and they already sprouted except a few. so i added more seeds, but then the original seeds sprouted. so in those cells its not a mix of ball and strawberry spinach. oh well. im also cooking my first thanksgiving this year. and im using lots of garden fresh herbs

I laughed reading this because I do the same exact thing! LOL I'm always impatient when gardening. I want things to sprout in no time! I found easier ways to germinate quicker, by just constantly keeping that soil really moist at all times during germination, in a really sunny location off the bat. Happy growing your lettuce! It is so much fun and easy to grow!

I love growing my Gourmet Blend mix which has that red salad bowl lettuce in it. So delicious all together I agree!. That red Romaine looks so great and I really need to get some of those soon lol. I'm waiting on some much-needed finances so I can re invest in my garden to be able to donate the produce I grow to the homeless shelters in need. I will definitly keep you in mind to order from in the future! I live in Fl and have been growing for about 7yrs. It's such a passion of mine and I love to help anyone I can however I can! Thanks for sharing, I grow tons of lettuce, its so good picked fresh and young! I use a t5 grow light when I have to during cold spells, which is rare for us here.. lol

Thats awesome, me too here where we live in Fl. I have most of my plants outdoors all year and always adding more to the 125+ I grow..lol It's amazing what we can grow here. I have beautiful peppers growing along with a variety of green beans, peas, carrots, lettuce, blueberries, blackberries, cherry tomatoes radish & more..lol all doing so great and I'm getting ready to harvest soon. Can't wait

Great idea! I think drilling holes is actually easier than hammering the holes in.
The tip of a hot glue gun works great for making holes in the bottom of plastic containers! Just don’t insert a glue stick, obviously haha.
It’s easier to do it indoors because don’t have to get rid of weeds and bugs but sometimes I do collect rainwater for my plants and food

Hi, I'm using the bottom ends of romaine in the bottom ends of celery I put a little honey across the tops and they're growing quite well in water. I just wanted to plant them in some soil and see how that goes but they look pretty good.

I am totally new to planting Lettuce and actually new to planting anything. I want to start planting Lettuce indoors but I have a question. Do you have bugs or any type of insects that get Into your Lettuce inside the house?
I live in Canada and would love to try this indoors. I have a very sunny south window. It's very expensive to order anything from the USA,so I'm hoping to find seeds at my local Garden Centre or Organic Grocery stores. Thank you!

I use a sodering iron to put hole in my plastic containers. You could also do a heated nail.

Those smart pots are perfect for the little space I have, plus I can keep growing and donating while searching for another place. We rent and it's time to move on to hopefully bigger and better things. I want to be able to donate most of what Im growing to people in need and start a few non profit programs that will help a lot of people really soon!! Enjoy them!! They look so much better than the smartpots they sell here!

I want to grow lettuces indoors so I can have year round supply of greens😊. My question is what to do after you harvest the greens? Do you just keep on planting seeds in the same grow container every couple of weeks? I hope to hear from you! Thanks and more power to you!
Hello Sweet December, thanks for following along, so glad you are growing greens inside - good for you! You can plant one container with seeds, then plant another small container a few weeks later. When the first container is ready (3-4 weeks) harvest with the cut and come again method, pinching off the outer leaves, new leaves will grow back. After several harvests, the plants in the first container will start looking ratty, pull out the plants and plant new seeds. If you time it right, the 2nd container will be just about ready to harvest when the first one is done. Just keep repeating this process with 2 o 3 containers to have a continual supply. I’m late to the party here, but hopefully you see this. With leaf lettuce, you can cut off the outside leaves. The new leaves will grow out, and when they’re a good size, you cut the outermost leaves again. You need several plants because you’re only cutting a few from each plant, but you can harvest them many times before you need to replant.

I have a question: I love, too, those beautiful metal containers, but don't they get rusty when you have to water your seeds/ plants, also, with the humidity? Do you treat them with a sealer? I have thought of that, but didn't want to add any chemicals to anything I would be growing to eat. Did you have any rust issues in using them? Thank you!

I use metal skewers heated in the stove's flame to poke holes through plastic...
I planted way too many seeds 4 weeks and. I've tried thinning them too, I think I need to start over.
What seeds did you plant that you’re having trouble thinning? I plant too many lettuce seeds on purpose because they’re tiny and the packets have so many. Then I eat what I thinned. It’s usually the best when they’re baby leaves.

Great video thank you! I was wondering about the plastic containers though. I have so many of them lying around and I'd like to use them but I'm a little nervous about the chemicals from the plastic leaching into the dirt and then into the plants. Is this a valid concern ? I really want to make use of all my containers!!

Instead of using a hammer or a drill, use the same nail and hold it with a pair of pliers or drive the nail through a piece of scrap wood and just heat it up,with a lighter. I'm a wood worker so i drive nails through scrap wood, then I shape the scrap wood to make it comfortable and voila, it's an actual tool. I use a grill lighter versus a cigarette lighter so my thumb is not right next to the flame

Hey Are you going to do a series on Succession planting. I am trying to plan out my 2019 garden and start growing more lettuces and other greens. Great video. I am glad to see everything is going ok.
I just recently bought your book and what a great book and read for a newbie gardener (started our first veggie garden in 2019). I am trying to start seeds this year as well and your light video was great and I’m all set up for when I start my seeds. But I have decided to start lettuce indoors until I can start seeding and planting in the garden. I do have a question, after everything is done should I put a clear cover over the container until the seeds start to sprout? Like a greenhouse.
In some videos I watched they added fertilizer or other stuff to the soil, but you didn't. Is a bag of potting mix all we need? How long can you use the soil in you pot before you have to replace it? Just replace it with new soil, or add nutrients every so often?

Hi kim, thanks for the helpful video! I now cannot wait until the weather cools down so I could grow lettuce! QUESTION- how do I control and prevent the aphids!! I got so many inchworms and aphids the last time I grew lettuce in my garden and that prevented me from harvesting anything. I've also tried using a neem oil spray but that only killed my plants! Please let me know what should I do, so I could grow lettuce without having that problem again this Fall. Thank you
Hi Jocelyn! You can first just spray them off with water and a little dawn dish soap. Next if they return spray with Neem oil - it must be repeated once per week for 3 weeks. It will NOT kill on contact but will interrupts their life cycle- you can also spray it preventively before you ever see the bugs and give you a healthier plant overall!! I get my Neem Oil from The Rusted Garden- it has the special ingredient that interrupts the life cycle where the big box stores do not. Hope this helps!

How moist should you keep the soil once they're established? And will they just keep growing as you cut them back? Or do you have to plant more often from seed?
lightly moist NOT waterlogged! Cut them back, keep them fertilized once a week. IF they die, replant. CK
