I'm travelling across the American West in an RV but I missed homegrown veggies, especially lettuce. So I saved some metal cans and fast food cups, filled them with dirt, and now I've got radishes, carrots, onions, and lettuce growing. I park facing south and they sit on my dash; when I travel they get stowed wherever the sun is shining, or in winter get put under solar-powered LED lighting when the sun clocks out early. I'm kinda proud of my little travelling garden; it's already saved me a bunch of money and I literally just used soil and ash and leftover winter seeds to make it, so cost me almost nothing.

I love how you say with container gardening "we can make something that is not as ideal into something that is ideal". I just started gardening this year during the pandemic. I often ask people if they garden. Whenever they reply that they live in an apartment or condo or a house with no garden I always tell them they can buy grow bags (possibilities) which can flourish.

@@cookiemama4 zucchini needs lots of space to grow so it is better to grow them in the ground not in a container. If you only have the space or option to use containers then grow other plants because there are lots of good options out there, example peppers do well in containers.

Because of limited garden space and intruding roots from nearby trees, I've been switching over to all containers. LOVE this!! I like making my own growing medium too and recycling the soils after each season. Getting ready to plant lettuce again and realizing how shallow their roots are, I fill in the bottom half of pots, like in the video, with chunks of styrofoam, which normally go into the landfill. Improves drainage. I used to use chunks of brick, concrete, rocks, shells, etc. but they always made the pots too heavy. Then my "bulb" lit up one day and I decided to give it a try!! Bingo! So, I share this with folks and also the appliance delivery guys last week, as they were unboxing my washer. They loved the idea and said they'd share too. Happy growing!! Life is good. It's even better when you garden!!!

Pat Skipper styrofoam is leaching bad stuff. I know, that Americans still use styrofoam picnic cups, but it doesn’t make it right thing to do, both for environment and health. Even if you do use styrofoam cups to drink not hot beverages it is less harmful than let it sit in the pot mixed with fertilizers

Hi! For the past few weeks, I've been watching almost all of your videos and I just love them. I've learned so much, and I am now seriously obsessed with gardening. This growing season will be my second garden ever and I'm so excited it's ridiculous. I was wondering if you had any updates on this particular video topic? I've never seen another video with someone planting so many plants in about a square foot. I actually gave this method a go after watching this video and planted some arugula, corn salad, salad bowl lettuce, spinach, and red lettuce in two giant pots and I'm looking forward to eating delicious salads. I never had home grown leaves before to eat so I can't express enough the anticipation of my seeds germinating and taking off. So thank you so much for your inspiring channel.. they have really propelled me into my unknown passion for gardening. I never had something I was really into and could even be good at. I tried so many things out in my life, but gardening became very special to me and you and a bunch of other youtubers have inspired the hell out of me. Peace!

luke my family moved from a 1.5 acre property where I had a nice size garden ( 50ft by 75ft) to a house with only .25 acres which we can't have a garden out front so really it's only .125 of a acre I could plant so I decided to do a container garden and I watched your old videos and the one about the "super tomato soil" (I believe it's something like that) and I made soil up just like that and my patio garden is ridiculous how good it's growing, all my plants how doubled in size if not more and they only been in the containers for 3 weeks! my gardening skills definitely wouldn't be near where it is if it wasn't for your videos. keep up the good work!

    2) How much do you water the pot each day?

    • @stewpendousgrowth4
      @stewpendousgrowth4 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Make an organic compost/fertilizer tea. Include a handful of as many 'inputs' as you have around. Kelp meal, bloodmeal, bone meal, things of that nature. When transplanting, I line holes with azomite and triple phosphate(rock phosphate will work).
Put your inputs in a bucket or gallon jug and put a fish tank aerator tube down in the bottom and let it bubble. Add some EM·1 and molasses for plants. 48hrs is the most time needed to bubble. This year, I'm also going to inoculate the mixture with a root fungi that helps to spread moisture and food within the soil.
When you sow seeds, use Luke's high intensity method. This will cause the roots to go deeper. When watering, soak the soil low. Doing that once a day with rain helping might be a good starting point. The salad leaves will shade the soil for themselves and reduce moisture loss.

What am I growing in containers this year? 2 Peppers, 2 tomatillos, 2 tomatoes, 1 pot of onions, 3 cabbage, 3 bins of potatoes, 1 bin of beets, 1 pot of fennel, carrots, green onion, chives, basil, lemon basil, oregano, radish, and 3 types of lettuce. I decided to pull in most of the furniture off my patio and gave my BBQ to my daughter. (I went vegan and have little use for it) Now I am going to keep out one chair and a side table. The rest of my 15 X 5 foot patio will be covered in potted plants. We will have to see what will grow now. I am waiting until the beginning of June to get it all outside. :)

I put 4 zucchini seeds last summer, I'd never grown a container garden before. I have grown a lot of stuff in 20'
long beds. I did know about cherry tomatoes. I put just one plant in a very big clay pot. Wow! We had a million tomatoes and almost the same of zucchini We picked the last tomato at the end of Nov.
Next year I am going to try potatoes in a bag. What else would be good for a newby. I only have 6'by10'. of room on my deck which is on the 2nd floor? We liven in the western suburbs of Chicago.

I started my patio garden in mid-March. I have Tom Thumb Peas, arugula (it just bolted on me, though...past the time to start a new pot while I wait to harvest the seeds from the old!), green leaf lettuce, Swiss Chard, radishes, baby beets, and I just put out a determinate tomato plant (Ace 55) last night. I will be planting a few quick maturing carrots, cilantro, and radishes in with the tomato, though, because the pot it is in is a 20", 14 gallon pot. I think the tomato can stand to have some company while it is still little especially! I really want to grow more of my own greens because they are such a waste of resources to get from the store or even from the Farmers' Market for me (nearest one is a 20 mile drive). I think I will stop at the store and get some of the Eco Scraps potting mix and start a couple more pots of lettuce. I do have a nice-sized in-ground garden for my suburban area, but my deck and patio are bigger. Might as well put some pots of food on them!

I had discovered poison ivy in my veggie beds last year so I decided this year to put everything in containers. Only instead of using expensive containers I accepted donations of unwanted plastic storage totes..
Worked out pretty good for this season .. considering the weather.. but now I’m exited to expand next year..
Not only am I repurposing storage totes I’m now repurposing old yoga mats for my walkways..
And yes it was cool to be able to constantly rearrange them..
It has giving me lots of great ideas
If I could attach a few photos I would
I mixed in other types of pots and statuary.. mixed flowers in with my fruits and veggies..
I’m seriously considering planting apple trees in large containers..
Can you do an episode like that?

This is so awesome! I just stumbled across this video looking for a time lapse of lettuce growing and I'm definitely sticking around. I'm a brand new indoor gardener currently living in college dorms and in the summer I'm moving into a third floor apartment so container gardening is a must for me. I'm actually growing lettuce right now! Four little sprouts in one container which is why I was looking for a time lapse (a newbie's best friend I swear, it's so much reassurement that I'm doing it right) but in my next batch I'm gonna try that massive seeding. I'm also growing potatoes right now and I want to grow broccoli and tons of other things so I'll be back!

Spuds. I'm growing spuds in 15 gallon nursery pots. Kennebecs, to be exact. The seed potatoes are being started in half-full pots of my own compost, a small shovelful of composted cow manure, a good handful of composted chicken manure, a light handful of 10-10-10 and a sprinkling of potash. Please note, my 4-in-1 Mini Soil Tester tells me that this mixture is infertile :) It sure holds water though.

+FUCKTARD same situation as cow manure fresh manure can only be used in the fall, composted or well-dehydrated manure is ok in spring or even in active beds. IIRC, 255 of the nitrogen leaches out during aging. (U of Arkansas, IIRC).
