Gary, do you have any plan in place for a time you may not have store bought fertilizer and additives available? Have you tried managing / experimenting with out?
Hello Gary. I want to try to grow in the container next summer. How many plants do you have in that container? And what do I do when they get to tall? Do I trim them down?
@@kimhouston1234 he said 2 per 10 gallon container.

I am new to planting. I have planted cucumbers. They are flowering but I don't have any cucumbers at all. They are in containers on my porch. Why do I have no cucumbers? I planted these on 8 April this year. Please help me I have no clue what to do. I am new to planting.
Plant flowers nearby to attract pollinators or pollinate the flowers yourself with a toothbrush or small paintbrush 🖌.
I have found using cedar shavings around my plants have kept off every kind of pest so far and I am already harvesting cucumbers. No squash bugs, etc. No kind of pests at all. I think the cedar shavings masks the scent of my plants.
Thanks for the info 👍
I wonder if I could use Cedarwood essential oil in a spray bottle
Thank you! I have a terrible time growing cucumbers in East Tn.
I use cedar mulch in my beds because of termites don't like cedar. I put cedar in my pots because it doesn't rot like regular wood mulch. I put it in the bottom of my pots for drainage and mix my fertilizer in with the mulch because this is where your roots will be in contact. Need to be sure you have one good hole about one inch wide in bottom of pots or 1/4 inch holes around bottom top of pot. This will keep water from standing in bottom of pots so roots don't rot.
This makes such good sense!! ...I feel so dumb right now!! I know cedar trees repel insects of all kinds. Our chickens have always roosted in the cedar trees. We never have had trouble with mites or anything. I do suggest anyone building a coop, use cedar wood!!
Do you have any issue with the cedar chips changing your pH?
This is freaking spectacular! Everything I needed to know. Thank you so much! Subscribed.
Okay, second video I’ve watched. This guy is good. Concise with relevant information. Subscribed! Very helpful for a new gardener that probably took on too many varieties at once.
That’s me! I planted 33 tomato plants, every variety known to man. I’m almost overwhelmed. Planted way too much zucchini. It’s just me & my elderly father to eat all this. I’m giving away most of it. 😂
@@jonihughey1352 do you have any pictures of your garden? I'm just interested in seeing if you are as crowded as I am. Lol
I think we've all been there wanting to plant ALL. THE. THINGS. And too many of them at one time at that. 😊
Haha this is me but this guy has helped me tremendously in the garden! 🎉
This video is just in time.. my cucumbers are sprouting and growing fast! These tips will help me get to a great start!
I have learned so much from you!! My 1st garden is a complete success 🎉🎉😁because of you I was able to be confident as a 1st time gardener. Sharing my knowledge with other as a 1st time gardener that is amazing!! Thank you 😊
That is what I enjoy hearing. Congrats on getting started

My cucumber plants are loaded with blooms I don’t see any cucumbers?? Are they all male blooms?

I have learned a lot from you Gary. But, a graphic of the feeding schedule would be helpful.
I was just thinking the same thing. It’s a lot of great information. But I need to hear it in a more organized or systematic way.
That would be beneficial
My dad just used homemade compost and that's it. He put seven on plants for bugs but not on vegetables. Didnt use to have all these fertilizers just manure. To many chemicals we don't need. Just use organic fertilizer. Miracle grow is the worse you can use and any like it. Any thing organic is better for your soil. You can get magnesium with banana peels and calcium with egg shells. Put these in your garden. I grind up egg shells and put in my pots and make a water mixture with banana peels. Just go on websites and see how to use egg shells, banana peels and coffee grounds for your pots and garden. Throw all your scraps in your garden. My dad did this during the fall and winter so they would break down for spring planting. He used his grass clippings for mulch.
That works

Great vid, thx for sharing. Two Questions: 1) How tall is the trellis on the cucumber plant with the yellow flowers?. 2) Did you pollinate the yellow flowers?, if so how did you do it?.
Directions for fertilizer
are too complicated
Great information Gary, my cucumbers have been producing well and I'm going to try some epsom salt today and hopefully extend production a little longer.
A really informative video with common sense tips. Thank you
One question, I’ve been using rectangular totes for my container plant, have you found round ones better?
So just to be clear Epsom salt once per month
Chemical fert every month
And do you top dress every 2 weeks with or without the liquid? Or alternate top dressing with liquid fert? What if the chemical once a month lands on a organic schedule? Sorry for the confusion
I second this question
When they are going round instead of long.. what's going on.???
10 galloon container for pot.
Epson salt is magnesium sulfur. 1 a month 2 table spoon for 1 gallon.
10-14 days water cycle.
7-days organic fer.
15-30. 15 Once a month. 7.15.7 half table spoon.
Granular Organic fertilizer/ 1 a month/2 tablespoon.
Spidermites starts at the bottom.Spray beneath. Spray beneath 2x a week.
Spray peppermint oil spray from beneth. 2 drops per glass water.
Thanks
Can you use both granular and miracle grow liquid at same time
Spraying underneath has really helped my plants thank you.
Great tips. I’m new to gardening, and am having problems with my cucumber plant not producing male flowers. I probably have about 15 female flowers and not a single male flower. I’m using a grow tent with Led lights Any suggestions on what I can do?
i have all males and hardly any females... lol what is happening! ugh!
I've been growing for years and have always had great success with cucumbers, melons, squash etc all cucurbit plants.now the past few years the cucumber beetles found my garden and I can't get rid of them. I've tried neem oil, soaps,bt and others I've had luck with sevin dust but by that time the bacterial wilt has spread I think the trick is to plant resistance verities which I haven't been doing.your garden looks great.keep growing ✌😎
which variety is resistant?
Which one are resiatance?
I have a terrible time with cucumber beetles. This year I am planting bush cucumbers that don’t need pollination and covering them with tulle.
@@nancywebb6549 where did you buy the tulle? I planted Beit alpha cuke in the container

I never really considered all of the differences between soil ecosystems re: ground versus pot. I feel like I'm taking a master gardener class when I watch your videos! The only time I've really differentiated between the two is when I water with the chlorinated water my town provides. Sometimes the smell is so strong and I've had an aversion to pouring all of that chlorine into a closed system like a pot, so when I empty my watering cans I immediately fill them again and let them sit overnight to let the chlorine evaporate. Do you have to deal with chlorinated water?
Mine is chlorinated by the city but I don't smell it. But I do use tap water with no issues. Containers are very different. A lot of people do soilless mixes like all coco coir. That is when you really need water soluble ferts. Very glad to help.
Yes I have 25 plastic milk bottles that I fill and leave standing in full sun to cook out the chlorine , I put several hole in the caps to keep bugs out and sometimes I just use it as a sprinkle to water my plants.
You can buy a filter that attaches to your hose on Amazon.
Thank you I need this my cucumbers have not been growing. Getting ready for gardening now
Good luck and take notes. That is what I do.

Oh God... I'm probably not gonna be successful with this... I can't stand bugs and I am certainly not going to squish no bugs hahaha I know... I should've probably learned something else in this quarantine that didn't involve bugs. God help me.
do you plant the plant like a tomato plant by planting low in the pot and adding compost up the stem to get a good root system ?
This so educational, I’ve had 3 acres of garden. Kids moved on, we have a tiny place now. I’m container gardening this year. Always something to learn!

Hi Gary I really like you videos. you have so many I can't find one to give me the answer, how many cucumbers should I plant in a 17 gallon tub ?
Well depends on how much you can stay up on watering and feeding. I would go with 2 for standard size. 3 of 4 for bush type.

It's probably too late for me to plant cukes in S. Florida in the middle of April, but I'm going to try in a more shady location instead of in full sun. This video showed up in my feed at just the right time! Thanks for always having such calming, informative videos. :)

Planning to grow few cucumber in container. Thanks for detailed video.
OMG, now I see what was wrong. You have TWO to THREE plants per container. I have THIRTY plants in a 36" container :) I have planted 32 seeds, 30 had germinated. I fertilize every 3 days. I have a device that measures soil moisture, soil fertility, and so on. Every 3 days soil fertility drops to zero. Despite all that I do, plants visibly struggle. Now I know why :) Thank you for this great video! ♥
@@justinlangley9529 No kidding :)
Can this fertilizing and epsom salt routine also be used for herbs and veggies in containers? Thank you!!
I’m curious about this too!
Yes, you can
Best for peppers and Tomatoes as well

Why am I just finding out that cucumber vines will root in the soil?! Can you propagate entirely new plants from the vines if you cut and transplant?
Hello you can try this . Let a vine for a little time until the roots are strong. Than cut IT from the motherplant .
Oh my God the incels have found gardening pages
@Benaiah Ahmadinejad being a little extreme aren't you? Btw, if you're going to comment in the King's English, then please spell correctly. May you enjoy your day and let the love of Jesus enter your heart!
You dont have to propogate. Its already doing its own thing. Why cut it?
Thanks for taking the time to make videos and sharing them with us! You’re so full of knowledge and are very helpful! Thanks!
Very glad to help.
I am growing the pick a bushel cukes in 2 containers, & have watched this to help maximize results. Really love the info. 1 question--do you mulch the cukes in the container? I am using a mulch on most of my other container plants (esp tomatoes) what about cucumbers? Thanks.
Man, you’re serious about your fertilizing, epsom salt, tomato food. I fertilized everything when I planted it & 3 times since May. I used Miracle Grow & mine is doing well. This is my first year doing it by myself, so I’m watching lots of videos. You’re a pro & I admire your diligence, especially in the 98 degree temps. Thanks for the tips! 👍
So containers are a challenge to figure out the right amounts as the container plants demand a lot when big.

It is an oblisk
@@mariasgems1 LOL I wasn't asking what 'shape' it was called, I was asking what it was - i.e.; where he got it.
This is so much fertilizer and so many different kind that you are using, I like to grow organic so I Only use shrimp compost when I plant and epsom salt after that.I never use any water on the leaves, three plants last year gave me 857 cucumbers with zero problems with any kind of bugs. The difference might be that mine are in a small green house we built and I always plant chive not too far from the cucumbers which take care of all the bugs and for tomatoes the same thing plus I plant sweet basil and radishes not too far from the plant. I have been doing that for 5 years and never had any problems.
That works

you plant into the ground or raised bed? I dont have a greenhouse to keep mine in. and I have green bulb onion. Will that work as repellant like chive?
Lilly Banks I plant in the ground and I have both chive and onions. I plant the onions in the fall so they are already to come up in the spring. I do not know if you would have the same results if it isn’t in a greenhouse but there is no harm in trying.
How do you use your Epson salt I’m concerned about using too many fertilizers myself.
@@Elainemom one tablespoon once a month in a gallon of water, just water with that at the base of the plant.
Thanks for the suggestion on the worm castings i got some and my tomatoe plants are doing great. Can i use worm castings on all other vegtables?
I used worm castings on all my plants, both veggies an ornamental. They are all doing so much better than last years crops! I would go for it. Good luck. 😎

Hi Gary. Great video! Greetings from New Mexico where we have lots of hard water. I'm a little leery about using Epsom salt in an area where we already have high mineral content in our water. Is this something that can be used pretty much anywhere, or should I be careful since we have such hard water here already?
Greetings! No need to over use ES. So adding it in is ok to any kind of water. It adds trace elements so you dont need a lot. Ill be doing videos this year for soluble fertilizing to show how little is really needed.
Please visit my seed shop www.therustedgarden.com for Neem Oil, Peppermint & Rosemary Oil for pest and disease management. Calcium Nitrate for Blossom End Rot and for Seeds and Seed Starting Supplies. Thanks so much!
Hello, may I ask if you know why my cucumber plants have do not grow their tiny cucumbers and instead they turn yellow or dry up and fall off?
Do you use both the organic and chemical granulated fertilizers, or either/or?
I use organic that I find on sale. Years back I use chemical type. Prices of organics just really came down and overall they are better for the garden soil. If you are on a budget or can only use the chemical type. thats okay too.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thank you!
Also, the ground where we live seems to be working great. Just using the dirt that was already in ground.. first year, heard from past family members that family have always had plants growing. All the flowers we planted around seem to be doing great.. would the same happen with the garden for veggies and fruit
If the ground is great, make compost and skip all the other amendments. Use that year after year. In the ground veggies would respond the same. You have time to make compost now and just use it next year on so on.

If you use the water soluble nutrients for feeding your plants you need to and have to let some of that water run out the pot so you dont get salt build ups and raise your ph out of range and start nutrient lock out
Where do you get the orange/yellow box fertilizer that’s used every 10-14 days? Can’t seem to find it. Thanks for the time and great, informative videos
is any plain Epson salt (magnesium sulfate USP) Ok?, like Up&UP brand. Thanks
I'd like to know this too.
Just curious, I happen to already have Epsom salt that is lavender scented, does that matter? Meaning, will the fact that it is lavender scented do anything bad to the plant?
you should check to see if it's artificial fragrance, maybe essential oils would be okay. i would just wait until i found some regular stuff. i have the peppermint/eucalyptus epsom salts but i am not going to use that on my plants, just my baths! ;)
@@seedylee Thanks!!! I will play it safe and go with the normal Epsom ; )
That handful you called a table spoon is like 4 tablespoons or more funny.
Not precise LOL.

I'm new to planting. I planted cucumber seeds and tomato seeds. After seeing this I feel like I should have went to college for this. I had no ideal it was this hard.
Lol I wonder how our ancestors did it 😂 surely they didn't go through all this.
Nah just get started. The overwhelming info can wait. Turn some dirt, fill a pot, get some water soluble fertilizer and go. I have new videos that will help with that.
Check out my blog post for more details on Seed Starting Tomatoes Without Grow-Lights and conditions to be cautious of: www.therustedgarden.com/blogs/vegetable-gardening-tips-blog/how-to-grow-tomato-vegetable-transplants-without-grow-lights-principles-examples-planting
I just started as well. This is my first year and so far my plants are doing great without the complicated parts. I’m so sure these things help to yield a higher volume and greater fruit, but my goal this year was to learn and try to keep something alive. So far my plants are producing and growing, it doesn’t have to be hard :) . Learn as you go, and good luck!
I will certainly try this NEXT year! For the last few years, I have had NO cucumbers; big gorgeous vines, but with limited female blooms that even with hand pollinating, did not produce fruit. Every day the plants would wilt in the heat and then perk up after watering, but then, it would seem that I was drowning them Last week, I just gave up trying to save them and pulled them out for fall planting. Texas summers aren't good for most things, but a better soil mix might make the difference.
Maybe drop a cuke seed now. Let the summer heat fade. You might just need to adjust the timing of seeding. Good luck.
Hi, Can I grow more than 1 cucumber vine in a pot ? Thanks!
I would like to find cucumber seeds mini ones that sell in grocery stores in a plastic bag. Theses are 3-4 " long and use them in salads. I grow them in containers in Louisiana.
Thank for the tips and ideas for growing cucumber. I love your channel. Thank you for sharing.
Would having peppermint leaves or plants nearby help?
I wish but not really

I live in Maryland also. Have you ever considered putting together a Garden journal with reminders of what to do daily . weekly. etc for the most common plants along with your recipes for pest and disease control. I am new to gardening and something like that would be really helpful. You could also link to your videos for demonstrations. It could cover seed starting indoors through the entire growing season.
At some point I want to do more writing. But for now, life is keeping me busy.

I love National Pickling cucumbers!! I’ve been growing in wicking containers and I bumper crop every time! Great video thanks

Do you find that one side drainage hole to be sufficient? I have been making multiple holes in the bottom of my containers and covering them with screen. One hole would be a lot easier! It seems like you would always have some moist soil under the hole?
It is. Make it like a dime size. And yes you get a nice reservoir of water if you make the hole 1 or 2 inches up the side.

A lot of information, like this video. My consort is pruning cucumbers ? I sow other video with pruning the cucumbers.
Thank you for your videos! I purchased peppermint oil for my garden bugs, but now I’m hearing that peppermint oil burns the plants. I’m now in a quandary! Help!
So just test spray. I havent had any burn. Spray when there isnt full sun. I will be spraying cuckes zukes and kale this week.
Thank you Gary! I am trying my hand at container gardening for the first time. 8 bush cucumber plants are started nicely on my deck. Realize I'll be doing a lot of sharing if my yield is good. And likely it will be with your guidance!
What time of day is it when you spray underside? Because I thought you weren’t supposed to spray any plants in bright sun
Sir My Cucumber plant's Leaves are turning Yellowish !
What Should I do To Prevent The leaves from Becoming Yellow

SO it happens. Start with water soluble nitrogen first. Give them a big drink. See how they look in 5-7 days.

Gary, I'm enjoying your videos so much! THANK YOU FOR SHARING WITH US! I truly wish I had found your videos sooner, because I'd have more of a handle on my "Swiss Chard, Mustard, Collard and Turnips." They're "leggy", and I didn't know about putting my Grow Light closer to the plants (this is my first time using a Grow Light). I moved the light closer, so I believe they'll be alright.
I took photos of my plants, all of what I'm growing, and I'd like to send them to you and seek some more advice if your able to offer me some. Where can I send the photos to?
Thank you again for your advice and expertise. Didn't mean to be so "Windy" in my message lol.
Thanks so much for watching. Yep closer to the light. therustedgarden@gmail.com for pictures

Hello Gary. Awesome video and tons of great advice. Thank you very much. I have a question;
would a product/s such (for example) as AquaDuct L&G or E-Z Wet be beneficial since these products claim to help retain moisture for any plants grown specifically in pots? I've had never heard of such products before. Just found out by watching hanging baskets "secrets" :-)
I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks again for the most comprehensive visuals and information.
So i just read ez wet. What? So seriously I never heard of water needing help to be water. I cant imagine it ever being needed. Peat, coco coir is all you need to hold water in your potting mix. The issues in containers and baskets isnt making water move better, its having matter in there to hold the water. If I understood the product.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you. It's funny the way you said "water needing help to be water" LOL
I’ve love your videos and I have purchased the Neem package. I ended up dumping my first concoction because I only had lemon dish soap that stops red ants in their tracks. Seriously I can stand in a big fire ant hill and surround myself with a circle of lemon dish soap and they won’t cross it. So not knowing for sure figured it would be too toxic for my plants. So remaking solution with some natural Castile soap. I am commenting because I know that clipping one of the seedlings (more then one germinating) so the other can grow more efficiently. I couldn’t bare to kill the other cucumber seedlings because it was so healthy and vibrant. So I cut a seedling from two double germinated cucumbers and I placed them in a bowl of water and they grew strong roots. I planted them in a pot when ready and they are still doing amazing! I took photos through whole process. I read this wasn’t supposed to be possible. They are marketmore cucumbers. Just sharing this here since my husband is tired of me passionately telling him everything going on in the garden. Haha
Thanks for the order. Good to know on lemon soap. I have a hard time removing seedlings too. Most plants will root but you did really well. I might try the early cuke root too. Thanks.

I've noticed a lot of small worms popping up and eating the young leaves on the cucumber plants I'm growing . Any tips on getting rid of them
I'm no expert, but Ive noticed many experts talk about removing the lower leaves of plants so they're not touching the ground. Its plants on the ground that suffer the most insects; keep leaves off ground and it will lessen the problem.
Thanks for the great info!
Is pharmaceutical grade epsom salt ok to use?
Well because pharmaceutical grade (USP) means it is safe for HUMAN CONSUMPTION it is probably safe to put on plants and dirt.
The "taste" of these kinds of cucumbers, however.......? Epsom salt?
Taste great

Nice videos and informative.I have a cucumber plant but the fruits are very bitter. What will I do?I tried cutting and rubbing the fruit but it didnt work.Thanks.
I am not sure what you can do really. Steady water and feeding. Nature can effect flavor. Sorry.
I am pretty sure I did something wrong. This is the top of my young cucumber plant. It sprouted buds very early and then the top looks like it has buds. Does this mean it is done growing vines? Do I just get rid of this plant? Or is the vine still going to grow? Thanks from a 1st year gardener.
