To be fair, it was a technology that had massive benefits outside of slavery as well. Slaves or no, cotton was still a valuable commodity, and production demands needed to be met. Unfortunately, the south had always been heavily reliant on slavery, such that North Carolina actually successfully negotiated for a guarantee that, if they signed the Constitution, the federal government would not have the right to ban the importation of slaves for 20 years. By the time that date came, the federal government was more sympathetic to slave owners, and remained as such until Lincoln's inauguration. That had far more to do with the growth of slavery than anything else, the fact that the government supported it and many presidents were even slave owners themselves. Andrew Jackson was particularly pro slavery

With respect to the cotton gin and the result that resource efficiency led to an expansion of consumption, it's called "Jevon's Paradox". It's named after a fellow of that name who noted that increased coal efficiency meant a greater number of industries could afford to harness that source of power and remain competitive. The result was a massive increase in coal consumption as all those industries expanded production.

i worked for a public school in FL, and from time to time they would send a mass message to all parents like "reminder, we have monday off for this holiday so stay home" and so these messages would be a 'robo call' as it is just a prerecorded message of the principle talking. The number was blocked and reported by so many people that my caller id would say potential spam call every time i would receive a very important call from the school. So a parent might miss a call saying that we are having a fire drill and then panic when their kid texts them saying the fire alarms are going off for no reason.

Two recent ones with id's were: 1. Mesquite Police Department: someone I don't know got arrested and was calling someone who either gave them a fake number (mine), or they misdialed. They left a desperate message, but Too Bad, So Sad for them.
    2. Costco Pharmacy: I have never used them but just in case, called them after ignoring the two fake calls, and was told they never make calls like that.

(In the USA) All my family regularly checks that they are on the government "do not call" list, and I even paid a fee to be removed from credit card company call lists, and still, we get at least a call a day during the week and 3-5 per day on the weekend. I researched what the DNC was supposed to stop, and came to the conclusion it's useless. The registry "stops sales calls from real companies." Political calls, charitable organizations, debt collectors, purely informational calls, and surveys are still allowed. I briefly worked for a company that did survey calls, and that last fact explains why some surveys sound more like one on one marketing! Reporting calls is a pain - they expect the phone number and the time of each call, which means consumers must either keep a log or get online each time to report. Also, many that we receive block the number or somehow show the number of someone we know - my mom received one from my phone number! What is really annoying me lately is spam texts to my cell phone that I can't "block number" because they are sent from an email address.

Note on CO alarms: last winter we lost electricity for several days when the weather was 0 degrees F. We live in the mountains, so when the electric is out (happens pretty regularly) we don’t have water, heat, or anything. We had just purchased a generator the year prior, but…… it has CO sensor that failed and….. THERE IS NO WAY TO OVERRIDE IT! IT WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO TURN ON MY NEW GENERATOR! The generator is outside, far enough from the building and under a protective roof. I couldn’t even manually pull start it without it turning itself off after 15 seconds. This could have frozen our pipes and caused major damage to our home, or even frozen us to death in that cold! Fortunately I could light a wood fire in the old coal stove to make it through the outage (also not really safe, but desperation to live and save our home…) When idiot protection goes so far as to put my home and my life in danger, it’s way too far.

Regarding high end instruments being easily tunable and you saying not automatically tunable... Gibson does make a line of guitars that automatically tunes itself, and can go to all sorts of alternate tunings at the click of a button and a stum. It really isn't all that difficult of a technology to figure out how to do, and I'm sure other companies are doing it these days as well. But tuning is a fairly basic skill for most instruments, and you still have to know how to play the damned thing at a high level to make it worth the buy lol. It really isn't analogous to singing, in which the ability to sing is the talent that's comparable to knowing how to play whatever instrument well. Autotune is like if you had a computer program override whatever incorrect notes you played and inserted the correct sound.

Gotta love how ironic it is that they still taught us how he saved the slaves, but turns out he increased demand for slavery, planting the seeds to start a Civil War, and then invented how to mass produce guns to improve the death rate of said war. I honestly don't think he felt any remorse
