Er, Cloning Simon wouldn't be a good idea, they'd probably start to work together and end up taking over a remote military base. One where those not allowed in just wonder and worry about what's going on inside.
And they wouldn't want to know. It was fucked, I mean it would be fucked up seeing the first, oh say 12-16 tries. Around that many probably wouldn't come out the other side very....well.
And those who later might come out functional, always seem to have...a slight twist to the usual Simon personality....and not in a good way.

I experienced the past while working in Egypt. I cracked a tooth and got told to go to a local dentist to have it extracted. This wasn't in a major city this was in a village. The "dentist" who I strongly suspect was also the village mechanic, or maybe just a keen amateur, pulled out a pair of oily bloodstained pliers, rested my head on a flip flop (his flip flop, sans foot) and heaved at my tooth until it finally snapped out. Anesthetic was not on offer. It was fucking barbaric and if I'm honest it hurt so much, a little bit of piss came out. In the past, dentistry I can attest, was the absolute fucking worst

My front tooth broke in half when I was a struggling college student. I live in the US but finally found a dentist from Mexico who was willing to fix the tooth for $175. He drilled in a small metal rod into the tooth to help the bonding stay and he blew cold air on the tooth as he drilled into it to help with the pain. That was my anesthetic lol it was horribly painful but it looked good and held on for years lol

I am 37 and got Hairy cell Leukemia. The desease discovered first in 1923. It was first characterized in 1958. So before that, it was usual that patients would just die without ever knowing what they had (its a tumor that messes with the production of immune cells - in contrast to acute leukemia the main effect is that bone marrow is replaced and thus too few blood cells are produced - usual cause of death is an infection). A bit later, the first treatment was discovered. While HCL displaces bone marrow, a large amount of the tumor mass is in the spleen. The first known treatment was to remove the spllen to reduce the tumor burden. This delayed inevitable death by something like 3 years. In the 1980s they invented using inteferone alpha as treatment. It lead to a slow recovery and in many cases had to be administered indefinetly since while remissions were frequent, they were usually partial and relapse usually occured after discontinuing treatment. Side effects were flue like symptoms. Fortunately the disease usually needed a very long time to adapt to the treatment and the disease is very indolent in course - so people lived often for 20 years. However, they had flue like symptoms 3 days a week due to inteferone injections. In the 1990s cladribine and pentostatine were invented as treatment. A 1 week course (cladribine) or one injection every 2nd week with a total of 8 injections (if i remember correctly - pentostatine is less frequently used now) lead usually to long remissions, often for > a decade. Retreatment was also frequently sucessful. However, subsequent remissions became shorter. The main side effect is a quite significant immunosuppression (very strong for the 1-2 month which are a bit risky, but also some remaining for 3-4 years due to decimation of CD4/8 cells (including those memory T cells that also get destroyed by HIV) - these need plenty of time to regenerate. However, after some treatments, HCL often becomes refractory.
In the 2000s it was found out that subsequent treatments can be made more efficient and provide longer duration when combining cladribine or pentostatine with Rituximab. Often, 2nd line treatment leads to minimal residual desease being completely eliminated - while ppl never are deemed cured - because relapse can happen even after several decades - many get old and die without ever experiencing relapse.
Now even more drugs for the case of relapsed/refractory desase have been found. Braf V600 has been identified as an important genetic mutation leading to the disease and allowing it to proliferate by activating Raf pathway, and drugs blocking this pathway have been developed (mainly as a treatment for melanoma which has the same mutation - however, while it works great in HCL, melanoma usually quickly adaps and thus it only provides melanoma patients some extra month). Also, scientists managed to combine binding domains of antibodies to one of the surface proteins of HCL with the toxine of pseudomonas, which is also quite efficent. Since these treatments are quite new, its not yet that well known whether these drugs should be combined with other drugs and if so with which drugs.
50 years ago, i would be in a situation to plan my own funeral. Now, it still feels like a damocles sword over the head - the desease still can get refractory and infections during treatment are a serious risk - but the likely course is that i live a relatively normal life. 70% of the people with this desease die of unrelated courses (however, median age of onset of the desease is in the late 50s, and a desease that is uncurable and gets refractory to treatment with time, the younger you get it the more likely you are to die of it so if nothing new would be developed my chance would be rather something like 50-50 to survive till i get a different cause of death.
So clearly, one does not go much into the past to see that the improvements in medicine are very real and very rapid.
And this even is the case in totally non drug related fields. Go back 20-30 years. People did not know much about the risk factors relating to sudden infant death syndrome, which is the most frequent cause of death for small infants (they basically just stop breathing and thus die). It was however found out that the most important risk factor is fleeping on the belly. infants sleeping on the back have only 1/10th of the risk of infants sleeping on the belly. Consistant provision of information cut the mortality of SIDS by like 90%. When my little one was born, i was fortunately aware. Because some fucking stupid uneducated midwife told us to put the baby on its belly for sleep because that way the baby could breath better... Well. We officially stayed calm - and of course disregarded her advice.. Instead we informed some better educated child nurse of the hospital to give the hospital the chance to fix that very apparent staff education issue that could cost lives very easily....

Oh God. I had the tonsillitis thing too, on and off for an entire year before my Dad left the military and got a new job so they could afford the surgery- the military didn't want to cover it, apparently. (Also he had to leave the military for other reasons too- he's very accident prone, and got dropped off a gangplank between a boat and a ship. It did a fair bit of damage, so they medically discharged him. So maybe it's that he had to get a new job after being discharged so they could afford it? I don't really know, my memory from back then was really spotty- I was 2 and 3 during this time- and frankly I didn't much attention to anything other than myself and my immediate environment.) I remember drinking chicken broth, and it was pretty good on my sore throat. Then mom made me drink orange juice. I mostly avoided orange juice after that for about the next decade and a half, except at grandma's house for some reason. And apparently when he went to remove them them the surgeon found that my tonsils were black and shriveled. Gross.

To answer your question of 'Is heroin addictive?' YES it is VERY addictive. I started using because I wasn't able to obtain legal appropriate pain relief for a medical condition that my doctor ignored for 6 years (Now the surgery HAS been done and I'm currently in the process of taking legal action as I almost lost my leg as a result of the neglegence). 6 years of use left me VERY addicted and it took some time in a residential rehab facility for me to manage to quit! When you first use it, it takes away all the physical pain, and mentally you feel so relaxed that someone could murder your parents right next to you, and you wouldn't care......In time, you NEED it just to feel normal. Without it, it feels like the worst case of flu you've ever had, plus you get really easily stressed by things that normally you wouldn't have any problems coping with. It becomes quite expensive too. At the beginning, a £10 bag lasts for about 6 hours, but after a while, you'll easily be using 6+ bags a day. I was VERY lucky that I was in full time employment all the time that I was using, so I NEVER stole anything to fund my use / addiction. I'm in a minority in that respect. As I've said, I've quit now, but it really wasn't easy. The first 3 days of withdrawals are VERY unpleasant, constant vomiting, nausea, bad case of the grimshits, unable to sleep and mind racing. Can't keep any food down, and really irritable. 4th day gets a bit better, and it improves over the next 2 weeeks. Almost 3 years later, there isn't a day that I wake up when my first thought is that I'd LOVE a hit of fine Afghan Brown there and then, but it's not a road that I plan on going down again! For anyone reading this who is thinking about trying it......Just DON'T. There is no such thing as 'Only once'. For anyone who is addicted, get some help, you CAN quit if you want to, but it does take effort and determination. It IS worth it (Quitting).

2017 I woke up at 4am thinking I was having a heart attack.... passed out in the couch from the pain as my husband was getting the kids dressed and truck started (we live in Alaska and at the time it would have taken the ambulance longer to find us than to just drive). He called 911 when I passed out. Ambulance took me to the ER and found out I need emergency surgery to remove my gallbladder. I have multiple unidentified autoimmune diseases and am in the ER ALOT.... I know the staff lol. When the doctor was walking out of the room he passively said "a nurse will be in shortly with something for the pain" and I said "hurry!" He turned around and asked "you want something?" I nodded and he ran out of the room... (I have NEVER EVER accepted pain meds or a prescription rarely do I accept Tylenol so he knew I was hurting really bad)
A second later a nurse came in with a locked box and took out a black and yellow syringe... I asked what it was and she said "you're going night night..." and started putting it in my IV a second later I told her "I can't tell if I can't breath or if I don't hurt anymore..." she looked at my vitals, patted my head and said "Yup night night..." and then I woke up 4 hours later....
Dilaudid/hydromorphone..... IS WHERE IT'S AT! 🤣😅🤣😅 Doctor came in and the first thing I did was ask wtf that was and he told me and I told him "if I come back don't ever give it to me again..." and he laughed and said "ya you only get it if you're dieing"
I googled it when I got home and it's the strongest most addictive opiate they've got. Stronger than morphine and heroine... and I can see why.... I'm not an addict but given the chance ............ 😏😬🤣

I had my tonsils out in the mid 60s. Next morning a nurse was force feeding me with cornflakes.....

That last one sounds like a Futurama episode explaining why there are talking heads in a jar.
