      The 2014 film? That was so rubbish. Some people, allegedly, say it's the smartest film to ever smart. Or, at least it was supposedly marketed as a smart film. Going by this video's theme, it was not quite hacking, but even if we were to accept this unlocking 100% of your brain, just because you can learn fast does not mean the computers work faster. There was this specific scene where there was like windows popping up and closing rapidly fast. And, it's not like it was the only stupid thing about the film. It's like the filmmakers used only 10% of their brain. Bada boom.
      Simon does not watch films, but maybe Sam should watch it while recovering, and explain it to Simon.

    My favorite unrealistic movie trope is a simple one: People stepping into a shower and turning on the water to instantly let it cascade over them, usually in slow motion and set to music. In every shower I have ever been in, the water initially comes out ice cold, and needs a moment to warm up to an acceptable temperature.

      Growing up with spring-water from the mountains, I often wondered as a kid at the marvel of "city water"... It's not just icy cold in the first instants of water flow in our shower (even today) but SUICIDALLY frigid for around two full minutes!
      THEN while I was in the Navy, I got to live in cities... and the wonder wore out shortly... It wasn't quite so horribly cold in the first moments, and it took less than a minute on average to reach "hot" in relative terms. However, it certainly didn't start instantly at any degree of warm what so ever... AND at that, I fully understood what had been preached throughout my formative years from just about every adult ever... "If you see it on a screen, it's at least 90% bullshit." The other 10%, you should research on your own and verify before repeating... ;o)

    my fav unrealistic TV trope- no one says 'goodbye' when they have a phone conversation. Instead, they rattle off all pertinent info and then just hang up. Try that in real life- you will get a call back in about a min with the person on the other end telling you they just got randomly disconnected.

    One movie that got hacking right was Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. What they showed on the computer screen was her typing actual SQL like you do when you're querying a database... As soon as I realized that I could actually read her queries and that they seemed at a glance to be correct, my respect for the filmmakers definitely went up.

    Ironically enough probably the most realistic part of Matrix Reloaded was a "hacking scene", involving a reasonably realistic network port scan and a known SSH (remote access) security exploit. Maybe it was even the most realistic hacking scene on any high-budget movie...

    • @giga-chicken
      @giga-chicken 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      TLDR: I have died inside.
      That scene has some interesting implications. Since the matrix is simulating 1999 is she aware of the vulnerability in SSH because in the real world that vulnerability was fixed in SSH2 but in the matrix SSH2 isn't released yet? Are the machines guiding technological growth to follow the same path in the matrix as it did in reality? If so, why? Because they just keep resetting the simulation every hundred years or so anyway so what difference does it make? Is there actually no such thing as SSH in the real world but only in the matrix, or maybe is it just less computationally intensive to only simulate technologies (and protocols) that exist in the real world? Why simulate the world in 1999 instead of simulating, say, 1200? Or the feudal era? Surly the humans would be easier to control in a system with a more rigid hierarchy than it was in 1999, and if you did that then you sure as heck don't have to worry about the different versions of SSH. Is it just because big square buildings are easier to render than little towns? Is that not balanced out by the fact that you have to also simulate all of the computers that exist in the late 20th century that are running things like SSH and also getting updates, patches, and bug fixes like the eventual deprecation of SSH version 1?

      I think the difference in what prople perceive as drowing. Someone can be 1. Actively drowning(which usually requires your breathing orifices under water). Unless there another factor most people dont fall into water and immediately start drowning.
      Or 2. Just cant swim so they are trashing and kicking with their arms flailing which may help keep their head above water enough to breath. Eventually either learning how to swim/being saved or then going under and drowning.

      The second time I fell into a family friend’s pond. I didn’t think I was drowning because I knew how to swim. I was 6. But I will say it was a little difficult to swim. Luckily, he heard me scream when I slipped and pulled me out pretty quickly.

    With 42 years of building engineering under my belt, I can confirm that all of my building's elevators had "access" hatches in the ceiling. And, yes, most could be opened from inside the elevator cab. However, all of them had electrical interlocks that halted the elevator's motion if it was opened. Most hatched were hidden behind the elevators drop ceiling that covered the light fixtures' and bulbs, but you could slide the panels out of the way to access the hatch. The main problem is that you could not reach the hatch from inside the elevator unless you had a ladder, or could climb onto the shoulders of someone in there with you. Several times, we would rescue trapped occupants through the hatch when the elevator failed between floors that did not have standard elevator doors on each floor.

Also the return air grates in those buildings are light plastic and 2x2ft so a body can relatively easily get into them with a ladder. These days you can actually get silencers that deliver noise reduction almost down to movie-levels. AFAIK not for large calibers though, and you need to start out with subsonic loads.

    The hero shooting a door lock was disprove on MythBusters. You can't actually blow off the lock on a door with a simple gun. They did prove you could use a shotgun, but that would destroy the door and would not be sneaky.

    • @SarafinaSummers
      @SarafinaSummers 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is actually a round four shotguns called a breaching round. It uses… I do believe… Zinc powder, as the shot, to destroy the lock, whilst not blowing the door completely off the hinges. The only reason I know about this is from reading “fiction “books by a former commander of seal team six Richard Marcinko, who used to use them when he would go on raids.

    "Mythbusters" had a lot of fun with movie myths. One of my favorite moments was when they tried using magnets to climb up an oversized ventilation duct, only to discover that the magnets made a hilariously loud clanging noise against the thin metal of the duct.

    Speaking of unrealistic movie hacking, Independence Day has to top it all. An Apple Mac somehow can interface with an alien information system, which uses totally different processors, they may not even be binary systems, different bus sizes.

    On the "knockout punch" - I have once been beaten so bad that I passed out, but the guy beating me continued, and hit me until I woke up again.
    That's freakin' mental, but I survived with "only" bruises all over my face and one arm, a broken nose, small fractures in my forehead and an almost broken (lesser cracks) on my jaw + bloody wounds here and there on my face.
    There's no way I can believe movie violence after that.

      On a more serious note, I bled so freakin' much, it just poured out of my mouth and nose, I had trouble breathing.

  • @nystemy

    Now I somehow wonder what Simon would think of the book series Temeraire.
    It is a fairly "correct" take on the Napoleon wars, but also clearly in the alternate history category.
    It is fairly realistic, despite its main premise being that dragons exist.
    It does however have some very stereotypical themes in regards to the dergs that I personally find a bit boring.... Call me biased if you like.
    But the books have practically no magic in it what so ever. (I almost feel like making a joke that a book is just paper and ink, but story wise there is no magical themes in it)
    Other than 1 tiny detail that boarders onto magic, but is fairly realistic, all though exaggerated in regards to the propagation of a shock wave, and how such could be generated, but this is details that the book partly skimps over. In short, a shock wave can be deafening, but it sure as hell isn't going to rip apart a ship from a sizeable distance away. Modern high explosives would only rattle some dust of the sails, not turn the ship to a pile of rubble. (I am however exaggerating what the book actually describes.)

    Omg Simon!!! THANK YOU for telling ppl about silencers/suppressors! They only slow the gases to below super sonic lowering the bang. The bullet unless it’s a subsonic round still creates a sonic boom and is loud! Only time you get movie quiet is like .22s, some of the high end cans when using subs the action of the gun is louder than the round going off.
