"Folsom Prison Blues" has been on my list for years, and I'm happy to finally be able to check this one off. Johnny Cash obviously has the best version of this song but I hope I at least gave you something a little interesting to listen to. Thanks again for watching!

"Folsom Prison Blues" was originally recorded and released by Johnny Cash in 1955. Since it's release it has been re-recorded and covered by hundreds if not thousands of artists. Rolling Stone went on to name it one of the top 100 country music songs of all time. Personally, I'd love to know where he came up with the lyric "I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die..." If anyone knows, drop a comment below.

Johnny Cash would have been pleased
Yes he would be!
Why isn't he the biggest star out there now? He's so gifted!! That bass is out of this world! Wow!
Geoff's in prison for being a menace to society.
Too much talent in one person and for stealing so many hearts.

Who else would LOVE a full album of Johnny Cash covers? 😁🤚🏻
Oh, yes please
I'd die for that
Honestly, I consider Johnny Cash covers my standing request from Geoff. He has my blessing to cover as many as he likes!
Booster Patrol here on yt has a great cover of God's Gonna Cut You Down. Not Geoff but really well done.
Yes!
ABSOLUTELY!!! ❤
Came into this as a Texan with a deep abiding love for Johnny and expected excellence.

Me too from San Antone
Ive rewatched this 20+ times, kept sliding it back to the beginning. This song was made for Geoff. The video is amazing. I hope nothing but the best for him and his wife.
Who?
G@@Farmgirl101Geoff castellucci, the guy performing johnny Cash's song.
Now if he could -con- convince *Avi, Tim & Chance* to join him in a rendition of _The Highwayman_
That would be amazing. I've been wanting him to do The Highwayman just with his clones - such a perfect idea for a reincarnation song to have the same guy from different eras. But if he were able to get a bass quartet together, this would also be an epic choice for that!
YASSSSSS!!!!!
@@sarahereach Of course, if they did it properly... (Maybe with the help of Peter Hollens) they'd be four sets of four clones... Maybe with some vocal percussion help from Layne or Adam Rupp(? Home Free's beatboxer I think).
Do you want to break us? 🤯
Omg YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!! 🙌🏻💘
I know this song is going to be good. It is going to be sad for me though. This is the first voiceplay/geoff song that my dad isn't here to watch with me. He passed away last week and he loved geoff and voiceplay. Thank you geoff for putting a smile on his face

After so many perfect covers, I realized something...
If you have a favorite old song, give it to Geoff. He's the guy who resurrects it for you and everyone else. He builds musical bridges in the songs that the original performers would have welcomed! Especially from a singer with such an amazing voice! 💚💯🎼
Ooh! Maybe It's Been A Long Long Time by Bing Crosby? 😍😍😍😍😍 That would be amazing!
I want him or #TimFoust to do Conway Twitty’s “Slow Hand”! It would be amazing!!!
When Geoff posted on Patreon asking for suggestions a month ago I almost put Slow Hand on my list but decided not to because it would break the entire internet 😂

When I was having a rough PTSD day my girlfriend put your music on and it helped pull me back to level. So now whenever I am in a hard spot I turn on your music. So in conclusion my girlfriend saved my life with your song ghost riders in the sky. Thank you.
Oh darling, I'm glad you're doing better. Things suck sometimes but not all the time, that's key.
May you have better and better days.
Music does wonders
I can tell you that music is the only thing that keeps me in this reality! PTSD sucks, memories suck, but music brings back perspective! Your OK Brother, just keep it up!
Sometimes you just need a little help tying another knot at the end of the rope you're hanging onto, and Geoff's music helps bring a bit of wonder and distraction ❤😌
I love the attention to detail in making each character a separate personality! Nice touch giving Jeff glasses and a book about Johnny Cash to read! The music was beautiful and it will be going straight into my playlist!
But Daryl is just SOOOOOO cute!

They al have different prisoner numbers, too.
@@pioneercynthia1 yes, the prisoner numbers spell out the name of the “Geoff”. L-R it is Jeff, Geoff, Daryl, and Jeoph.
qand each has his own numbers as well
Geez!!!! I just love this guy! I thought I had burned myself out, binge-watching him a couple of weeks ago. Apparently, not! And, the addition of harmonica is PRICELESS!!!! I'll be sharing this one with my friend, who is an exceptional harmonica player. We binged Geoff a little together recently. I'm sure he'll pull out his harmonica for this one; and we're going to have a great time with Geoff, in this virtual space!
Clapping pushups, Daryl?!? Way to intimidate the other inmates!! As if the singing wasn't impressive enough (and it is!), you pump out some perfect regular pushups at the beginning and some perfect clapping pushups at the end?! Gotta say, you make getting "old and boring" look and sound AMAZING!!!
I was just watching the pushups and there were 6 with perfect form?! That is _very_ impressive, Daryl 😆

Geoff with the pushups at the beginning, plus the hair being the longest I've ever seem it!!! Also the harmonica skills??? Bro is truly built different I swear.
High quality F#1 chest, insane. Perfect cover, love it.
Give a man a prison sentence, he'll form a bass quartet! Love it!
More interesting than learning to fish. 👍
Johnny Cash has returned to find out who is singing his music and he couldn't be more pleased! I curtsey to you!
As a hardcore Johnny Cash fan since decades I'm usually not so much into other artists covering his fantastic songs. But this one is simply unbelievable! The bare necessities, Headless horseman, Sixteen tons, Misty mountains, Man of constant sorrow ... you can't image to top these ... but then: here comes Folsom Prison Blues!
And I love the detail: you're reading his autobiography.
The man in black would be honored by your performance.
As a Cash fan, how did you like him doing the Hurt cover? I’ve been a huge NIN fan for decades, and found it hilarious how many people thought Trent covered the song.
I like to think that "Man of Constant Sorrow" and "Folsom Prison Blues" happen in the same universe.
I was just talking that out with my brother last night. Very similar themes (trains moving, sorrow/blues) and Geoffs original MOCS bridge COULD be read as a guy haunted by the murder he committed. We decided that Man of Constant Sorrow could be a prequel, where he riding the rails on the run for the murder he committed in Reno six long years ago (which is why he can't be with his true lover.) Here we see him after he got caught, having accepted his lot but missing the hobo life riding the rails.
@@sarahereach That's actually a great way to tie up the stories! I thought of man of constant sorrow as a sequel, on my end. I thought that he escaped prison as an interlude between both songs, and that the "ghosts within his head" are his past crimes. Interesting how both stories are so similar!
Also, with a little bit of imagination, we could even associate Sixteen tons with these two.
My favorite singer covering a classic from my second favorite singer. This was instantly one of my favorites, I appreciate the instinct to play this one more straight and not reinvent the song, but to freshen it up and give it that Geoff touch. Please consider "Johnny Cash covers" to be my standing request. You can do as many of them as you like!
One of my favorite things about this video was the details and nods to Johnny Cash. The book Jeff is reading, the uniforms styled off the prisoners from Cash's Folsom Prison concerts, the Prisoner Numbers! *Chef's Kiss*
Thank you for all you do, I am so proud to support you and help make this music possible!
Johnny cash probably wouldn't have minded if you were singing right along side him that would have been priceless omg!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍👍
This man has the most versatile voice I have ever heard. Too cool.
You've got to be kidding me. So many F#1 chests in this one, with no signs of decaying resonance. Beautiful performance and wonderful harmonica solo. You absolutely rock!
so many different bass notes depths in this and also his higher register notes are on point.
Hey Geoff, just listened to your interview with Peter Barber and may I just say to you that ANY song you would want to sing we will absolutely LOVE it! Don't worry about whether or not we wouldn't want to hear it. We all love your voice, style and arraignment....so just keep working off that list 😉
And thank you for all the effort you put in making this beautiful songs and videos! ❤
BTW I can't wait to hear to this beauty!
Am I the only one who just settled in to listen to him talk? The man’s speaking voice is fantastic-almost as great as hearing him sing!
I see the daily news has gotten into people's phones... Love the autocorrect from "arrangement" to "arraignment" here. Of course it's also suitable for a song about prison.

The last one sounds like he could go down even a little lower
@@tommax1626He sings this low to make us scared.
I am pretty sure he could sing much lower than this in chest, he just doesn't show it off. Pretty sure he could at least get down to E1 in chest. But he feels like it doesn't have good tone quality.
@@hugobasilio1303 Probably true, if he were to go to his absolute limit, he would have basically no freedom to change his tone, to slide into and out of this register without stopping, but i am still hopefull, one day we get to see his innerst demons!
Love how he's reading a book with Johnny Cash on the cover!
Imagination and optimism: That's what Geoff has managed to capture here, somehow, in a song about prison. It starts out sweet and plaintive, and sometimes it's kinda sad, but the whole time these guys are looking forward to the future bright-eyed and excited about what they'll do "If they freed me from this prison / if that railroad train was mine!" They've got a bright future ahead of them, and they're just champing at the bit to start living it! 💙
I was very impressed that you managed to get an entire cellblock to yourself. As a former CO, i know good and well how much of a near impossibility that is. I can't even begin to understand how you pulled that off.
Because it's not an active prison, and he rented it?
I used to listen to your songs with my elderly mom. She loved all of them. Wish she could hear this one. Great cover and it brings good memories. She passed on Valentines day. She would have loved this cover

Geoff and clones in prison apparently lead to peak sass and peak floofiness.
Geoff, I don’t know how you do it, but you’ve put ANOTHER cool spin on a song! Your harp playing, contrary to what you think, is sublime! I love it in this arrangement, as with all your arrangements, how you lead us down a path, and we think we know where it’s going, but NOPE, SURPRISE!
Thank you for all the treats you gave us in this video! 👓📖💪🏻
Lucky you have seen it
@@SouthPawBowler24Patreon, baby! Best decision I ever did make. 😊
Jeff brings this song back to life and I can tell you this much right now I have a feeling he's going to take this cover song by Johnny Cash the number one right where it stood back in 1968 when Johnny Cash took it all the way to number one. But he did the live version of this and he also did a studio version in 1955. And besides that, his voice sounds a lot like Josh Turner. His voice was also the same way this is what it reminds me of!
Holy cats! What a range this guy has! And one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard!
This song in particular reminds me of an old resident I used to clean rooms for at my work. His name was Ellis. Ellis was a perfect addition to the home, the sound of his harmonica echoing throughout the halls with many Johnny Cash tunes in his arsenal. I asked him how he learned to play and he said, "Once I lost the use of my legs, I knew I still had my hands as well as my voice."
So he learned how that way, keeping his hands aand mind busy as he continued to play his way into my heart and of those he touched. He asked me to sing with him multiple times and each time we did, was a moment that I will always remember for as long as I live.
Just sitting down with this man, almost made me feel like I was sitting down with Johnny. The sheer joy he had playing for everybody and anybody, makes my heart smile. We lost him last year and it's people like Geoff, who pay homage to the greats that keeps the memory and the music alive.
Bravo! Geoff. Bravo!
Ich bin total begeistert von Geoff. Er singt Johnny Cash! Eine große Überraschung.❤❤😮😍

I like how he listed his patreon supporters in reverse alphabetical order to give those who are usually at the end of the list some loving.
I happened upon this music video during my lunchtime, you see I was in a rather dour mood after having all the drains in the deli, where I work, so when I started this video I didn’t know what I was in for. I just knew it was going to be good because, well It’s Geoff Castellucci and we all know how awesome he is at arranging his pieces. Oh I was so not wasn’t ready to listen to this work of art. This piece just seemed different from the rest he’s done in the past. So full of Easter eggs and I’ll admit it…candy too, but what had me reeling was the richness of his voice. This music video and arrangement, good sir, has been your best one yet.
Many have compared Geoff’s voice to a fine wine, aged well and matured, but I’d have to say when I listen to Geoff’s voice I think of a sun setting….oh the layers, it’s so vivid I almost see colors. There’s a richness in his tenor range that is so full and sweet it reminds me of the vibrant colors cast upon the clouds whereas his deeper bass register is like the rich deep colors you find in between the clouds that you can’t help but be in awe of….everything works in harmony, the deepness reinforces his higher range.
Oh how I love the intricacy of this arrangement, a new favorite of mine….now don’t mind me, but I have a sudden urge to go paint a sunset for some reason.
Country songs really really, like really... Suits you... I mean your voice
I thought he was dropping G#1s but he did it on Gb1 or F#1 brooo, Geoff !! Haha insane

I just have to point out how insane that this exists. I was just riding in my car thinking how cool it would be to hear this song sung with a quartet with a great bass man. Literally exactly this. You definitely got the sub.
After working in jails and prisons for 22 years, my first thought was to see if each 'inmate' had a different number on his shirt. Well done! Attention to detail on top of a great arrangement!
And each number is that clone's name.

THE COOLEST MAN (MEN) ON THE PLANET
I love that your character, Daryl, just has this "do I really have to, okay fine" attitude the whole time 😂
One of the most well-known lyrics from Folsom Prison Blues is definitely an original - straight from the imagination of the Man in Black himself. Cash came up with the lyrics “But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die,” by sitting and thinking of what the worst reason would be to kill someone. When photographer Jim Marshall asked Cash why the song's main character was serving time in California's Folsom Prison after shooting a man in Reno, Nevada, he responded, "That's called poetic license."
This one's definitely a favorite, G. I really appreciate that you didn't reinvent this one. You were very true to the original, while still giving us some Geoff spin on it.
The visuals are a treat, your clone interactions only continue to improve. As do the various 'personalities' of the clones themselves: 'Jeff's' attitude... 'Daryl's' surliness... 'Joeph's' reticence/air of regret.
Thank you again for allowing me a seat on this crazy train. 💕
Alone or with Voice Play. thank you for sharing your voice with the world.
It's a shame Johnny didn't live to see this. I believe he'd been very impressed.
I'm sure the OG was there to inspire Geoff.
dang, he's just showing off with those clapping push ups at the end. also now there are 7 official geoffs in the geoff universe.
The man in Black has the advantage of having done it first, and having done it before a live prison audience, but he has the disadvantage of not having your range!

Johnny was an American legend. Your cover was the best version of this song I have ever heard. Flawless.
Geoff, you gave us another wonderful cover! You have such a good sense where to change up a song completely and where to stick more to the original, you proved that again here.
Your voice fits the song perfectly and you surprised me from the first line on - how brilliant is it to slow down the beginning on ‘and time keeps draggin’ on’! I love the little details (including easter-eggs) to differentiate the different characters and expecially Jeff’s attitude! My two favorite moments are you playing the harp and your little run on ‘whoa’ in ‘…better movin’ on a little further down the line, whoa’
