When I was a kid we used to go every year to a seaside resort. The thing was that the only way to get there would be on a boat. So you'd drive there, put your bags on the boat, it would take you there, and then a few weeks later take you back. And we had loads of friends there that we'd only ever see there, and only once a year. You saying goodbye to your friends on that boat reminded me of that. Of sitting on the dock, waiving goodbye to your friends, knowing that there will be so much time until you see them again... Knowing that soon enough it will be your turn, and people will wave at you from the dock, wondering when they'll see you again.
There's a noticeable mood improvement in this video Barry, you seem to be getting back to your old self again and the leg appears to be much better too ! 👍
In the even of a tsunami, no the boats would not be safe. They appear fastened down so they would be swamped with the incoming water. But worse all of the "loose" boats would be carried up like battering rams. Then the destruction when all of the water recedes carrying trees and debris from inland. Best place for a boat is deep water on the other side of the planet. Love seeing the various boats.
I've never seen a yard like that.. I love the idea. You don't have to worry about stands and blocks or tipping over completely on its side... pretty cool
I always thought a steel boat was the way to go in my early years. But a westsail 32 it's been my 2-year rebuild. I'll be leaving Washington State USA this year hope to see you out there someday.
With sailboats, steel only makes sense in high latitudes (because of ice), otherwise the benefits do not justiify the significacant additional maintenance.
We did a holiday to Fiji years ago (not sailing unfortunately) and had a look at Vuda point marina, definitely a WTF moment seeing boats sitting on the ground.
great stuff Barrie. What a fantastic place. I know you only stop over in these places to re stock, and make ready for the next move. But like you said, to spend a little more time in places like this would be great. Stay safe Barrie.
Oh wow - just found you - very interesting - now I can follow & learn all about how you do this boating thingy ! Not something I will ever be doing since I'm way too old for adventures now, but I will enjoy your adventures instead !
Brilliant video Barry as always, that looks an amazing marina. Loved the yachts being buried to avoid the cyclones! Take care love Malcolm and Eileen XX
Brilliant Barry... we love Fiji - go there (Castaway Is) every year but you show a different Fiji - as good of course...safe travels.. few Fiji Bitters there will help the passage !
I always look at pleasure boats as I do RVs, very few are used more than ten days a year. In Fiji, the suns effects look powerful, returning the bits and bobs back to the earth.
I was last in Vuda Marine in 1997 - the spectacular Wahoo on the menu and the most amazing locals. A fantastic lady at Waya Island with her tame lizard... and best of all, the Widow Va out on Nanuya Lailai near Turtle Island. Her invitation to much clapping and consumption of Kava with the local chiefs - an illuminating evening when the insect repellent was left on the boat!! How I have missed the place! Happy Sailing Barry
I'm always jealous when I see the fantastic places you travel to Barry but nice shout out to SV Delos but I reckon you should definitely get an actual US flag too (the manager of the place I used to stay in Auckland was from Fiji and absolutely top bloke so Fiji's definitely on my list!).
In 1964 a Tsunami passed into Cresent City, CA. We went there a few days after and ships are almost 2 miles inland. Even roads just go around them. Still there in 2023.
Loved the scenes of the derelict steel boats - you only see 25%. And great to see boat "trailor park" living and so much and many boats dieing for want of attention and basically cash. But Barry, next time..... go aluminium and no through holes. Plastic ain't so fantastic.
I went to Suva, Fiji in a big boat many years ago. The channel into the harbor was marked by sunken vessels which sank either by grounding or cyclones. It was passing through a ship graveyard to get into Suva, very eerie
Not sure if you ever saw the movie Dove, about Robin Lee Graham, but pretty sure the market you were at was in that film! Great episode - as always. Thank you Barry!
There are a few horrors there on death row. The glimpse of Fiji Bitter reminded me of nursing a crate of on the way home to NZ. One every lunchtime and rather good.
From that flight taken to see White Shadow that first time I knew you made a great decision. Halfway around the world solo testing how hard the bark is when the going gets tough, good job Barry. May all the passages be safe, filled with mugs of beer, smiles, and pizza after the anchor drops. Be well.
Barry, i have followed you in this channel for maybe 2 years, and since your search for a boat in the UK. I enjoy your videos and your personality. You are a great and brave old man (no offense, i am.old too). I have sailed a little and love it, though knowing that it is not seating on the rail enjoying enjoying the wind and a beer all the time. Fair winds my friend and go far.
Burying boats will keep them from falling over. If the wind is strong enough, the masts of sailboats can be broken. If there is sufficient storm surge, burying won’t help. Stay in hurricane areas and you takes your chances.
Barry... Barry.. Barry Plastic boats are made for children to play when bathing. Knowing the strength of the sea and its depths, I always prefer to go in a steel boat! All you need is a little patience and a good brush.
It's a great idea. I have seen this done in some places. Easy to access the boat as well. Think of all the ladder climbing you do when on stands. Looks like a busy place but nice
Barry wish you will come sailing to the other side of our small globe NORWAY. We got the best deapest longest fjords the stepast mountains and the best weather at least in summertime. You will be so welcomed by us all. Fair wind from Norway.😊
Best strength cost balance is Basalt.. it’s almost as strong as carbon… tougher to abrasion and impact lighter than E glass and because it’s natural Basalt rock reformed it’s greener and almost universally available mate. If it’s thick enough it’s bulletproof proof .
Hi Barry, I've followed your videos since Spain, but first comment. Last year I finally followed your footsteps, sailing the boat I bought ib Panama across to FP and then Fiji. Imagine my delight in watching this video, I gather from mid-winter last year, as you occupied the mooring spot next to that small white steel boat with the green footprints on it, that looks abandoned, because I ended up in the next slot along, the one with the Amel, next to the big round "abandoned" catamaran (now apparently moved). And my boat, Sea Change, is still there. No cyclones hit Fiji this past summer, so I feel justified in leaving her there, but sadly although I was supposed to get back there this week, it will be August while I recover from shoulder surgery. So now you will be a year ahead of me as you are now in Australia, while I will only get there in November. Still I hope we meet up somewhere one day. Check the end of the last video on my channel to see my view of Vuda Point marina. Happy sailing and best wishes. Hugh

I Have Been Watching Your TH-cam ,I Love It Great 👍 Job.
Hello Barry, nothing like good friends❤
Always sad to see them leave!
I hope to have it figured out one day like you Barry.
What a life you’re living!
Your candystriped cover allways reminds me of a viking ship sail ;)
Aaaaaa Fiji! It’s so amazing to see you having fun with friends every where you go. You are surely living the dream… be well!
Many good memories from Vunda & that little bar . Steaksalad & fys 10 Dollars , 13 years ago .

This is before the leg !
Amazing chapter!
Good to see you having a good time after your spat of challenges.I hope there's a tell all book in the future!
Careful with the hot sauces Barry, the song "Ring of fire"springs to mind.
I really like the looks of that Hans Christian.

A cold beer and a hot woman,I like your style there Barry 😊. Excellent work as always thanks ✨👏🫡
I've never seen a yard like that.. I love the idea. You don't have to worry about stands and blocks or tipping over completely on its side... pretty cool
Storm surge will carry them all out to sea.
Bolted down though 😂
So glad you have had a good time and a drink or two, Enjoy enjoy, and thanks from Buxton England. 🍺🍺
Yet another brilliant video I'm so jealous of you being in Fiji 🇫🇯 it's #1 on my bucket list 😀 stay safe and down a cold pint for me 😉
Looking forward to the next adventure Barry! Keep it up, stay safe and healthy and cheers!

Congrats on the boat, enjoy the rewards.
Think steel is best on motor yacht but not a sailing one.
With sailboats, steel only makes sense in high latitudes (because of ice), otherwise the benefits do not justiify the significacant additional maintenance.

Fair winds Barry ⛵️🍕🍺
I have a 40 year old Hans Christian here in the Med. Very few of them around in this region.
Great vid, I didn't know how hot it gets there. No AC on shady, thats a bummer. Thanx Barry.
Thank you Barry for Fiji...
Sad to see dreams rusting away!
Great timing Barry!
A great episode of the old sea dog. thanks for sharing Barry! Cheers!
Another chillaxin' video - thanks Barry! You're the only sailing vlog I've been consistent with.

I am sure i saw your boat sit lower in the water after you loaded all that beer on 🤣🍺🍻 Great video and keep smiling
Seen a lot of that Marina Sailing NV did a 2 year refit there, think you would get on well they like to play their own music too.
Brilliant video Barry as always, that looks an amazing marina. Loved the yachts being buried to avoid the cyclones! Take care love Malcolm and Eileen XX

I'd always thought about getting a sailboat, but then I realized it would never work out as I don't drink...
Don't worry, you can bring a mate with you who drinks for two instead!
Perhaps a good reason to start drinking. And there are always alcohol free beers! 😆
Don't worry Don, there's lots of sailors that don't drink (like me), it gives you more time to enjoy the sailing 👍
@@daveamies5031 one should drink as our body needs to be hydrated. You talk about alcohol?
@@rensvanderploeg1945 Yes I don't drink Alcohol, I do drink tea & coffee in small quantities and lots of water.
Cheers old dog

I worried for your safety walking under the sailboats on stands. Thanks for sharing. 🍻
