  • HTC sent over their One M8 - this time equipped with Windows Phone 8.1. A year and a half ago I tested Windows Phone for a month and decided that it really couldn't compare to iOS or Android for enthusiast use. Has my opinion changed after using the One M8?

    This review confused me. While Linus was right about the email notification crap, he complains about swyft key not being in the store yet doesn't even touch the built in swipe keyboard which is the best keyboard i've ever used. TH-cam plays in I.E so a youtube app isn't even necessary.

    • @LinusTechTips
      @LinusTechTips  9 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I don't use swipe . There's more to alternate keyboards than swipe.
      As for TH-cam in ie it's a joke. That was one of the many complaints I cut to keep this video from being 20+ minutes long

    • @heatlesssun
      @heatlesssun 9 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      LinusTechTips There are a number of 3rd party TH-cam apps that work great on WP. If Microsoft were playing the game Google is with Microsoft over Google services, Microsoft would be under anti-trust investigation for it.

    • @mclarenf101
      @mclarenf101 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      LinusTechTips
      The 3rd party TH-cam apps are great. And please, don't complain about not having an official one, because that's not Microsoft's fault. There used to be an official app, but Google decided to delete it. Same with the other Google services. They just have something against Microsoft for some reason.

    • @CannabisTechLife
      @CannabisTechLife 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a youtube creator I can see why you would have complaints about I.e youtube. As a consumer it works just fine for me and before that I never has a problem with the youtube 3rd party apps. My hope is that Microsoft seems to be less about restriction these days which might open up better relations with Google which in turn will give more google services to windows phone. That said i'm an avid microsoft consumer and don't miss anything really after going from IOS to WP 8.1 on my lumia Icon.

      If you are going to bash another OS on a phone never tell them what is really good about it. Just pick on the negative things. That is pretty much how the internet works anymore the last 2 years, everything negative gets all the audience screaming YAY!!!! Reality is something nobody has time for now days. If that is all he has to worry about is his picky gripes about a phone and some of those gripes are not valid, oh the world we live in. People would rather believe someone then go and educate themselves and find out the truth about a product. Sad fact is that commercial 1984 actually fits the company who created it. Now they are big brother.

    I've been using the windows phone for over a year on a lumia920 and I love it. Works great especially syncing information through my computer workstation and surface. I work in network administration and consulting, I thought it was more professional looking and mature then ios and Android in the face of clients and is definitely more for business work oriented people. I love widows phone and will continue to keep it. I think people in the consulting industry would get a great use of of out, especially of you need to access our forward a huge file easily and email it or transfer to another file.

    It seems as if many of the things that are frustrations for Linus about navigating through Windows Phone menus are easily fixed if he actually took the time to learn how to use the menus. He hasn't. Everyone knows that if you want to go back and look at other emails in your inbox or drafts you just hit the back button..... Also his issue with trying to call people quickly is easily fixed with Linus simply hitting one of the organization letters in the list of contacts that brings up a list of contacts based on the first letter of their name. Hit any letter, it shows list of all contacts under any possible letter, hit S, and call slick, don't search for him Linus!!!!!

    • @LinusTechTips
      @LinusTechTips  9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I show in the video how back doesn't do that. And when you have lots of contacts per letter like me that's not faster at all.

    • @kareemanderson
      @kareemanderson 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      LinusTechTips I suppose you could just use the search option in the dialer app and type the exact name of the person you'd like to call. No searching through multiple letters or even going into the contacts app.

    • @TranceraversGaming

      LinusTechTips That is very odd.... Could it be that they made it less intuitive with Windows Phone 8.1? I have been running Windows Phone 7.8 for the last two years and have absolutely loved the structure of the operating system, that being said I do not have Cortana, but this is still very weird. I agree with you that there have been some odd choices made my Microsoft in terms of operating system functionality. Microsoft pick up the ball!!!!! I know you can do it!!!!

    I'm disappointed Linus, this is one of the least objective reviews you have ever done. You made it abundantly clear that it doesn't work for you, but you fail to understand that it does everything 50% of smartphone users want to do, and arguably does it better. I'm very technologically inclined and prefer Windows Phone having used ios and android due to its fluid never-crashing experience and its fantastic integration with the windows ecosystem. Xbox music on android...oh right...

    • @LinusTechTips
      @LinusTechTips  9 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      There's more to ecosystem than the first party aspect. Xbox music isn't supported by sonos, so I don't care about it unfortunately. Once you go sonos it's hard to go back.
      So I use google music for reasons that go beyond it's solid integration with android AND ios (both of which I use almost daily)
      Also I think your 50% number is out to lunch. Consider normal people, not just geeks. What if a new mom buys a mimo smart baby monitor? She'll get home and discover it doesn't work with her phone. Here's another example: the power up app controlled paper airplane kit.
      The fact that you can live without this stuff is great but normal people don't want to worry about that crap. They just want to feel like if they buy a smartphone in 2014 it should "work".
      I realize for windows phone to get to that level it will have to sell some units so it's a chicken-egg situation... But frankly that's not my problem and I'm not ping to recommend my viewers spend their HARD EARNED money on something because I feel like it could be better if more people bought it. That would be completely irresponsible of me as a reviewer.

    • @ryanmcfarland1900
      @ryanmcfarland1900 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      LinusTechTips I understand your perspective and I very much appreciate you responding to my comment. I simply have had a different experience recommending Windows Phone then you stipulate would occur. Both of my parents got Windows phones and, despite being technologically challenged, have not had a single problem using them. My Wife and seven of my friends have them and have never looked back to Android or IPhone respectively. I think you bring up a good point regarding Sonos; once you become entrenched in Windows Phone, Android, or IOS and build your digital life around any one of them, it makes little sense to switch. I wouldn't switch from Windows Phone for that reason and you wouldn't switch to Windows Phone for that reason. I don't think that you did this review from the perspective of someone who has yet to choose a platform, but maybe there just aren't many of them anymore.
      Thanks again for responding,
      Ryan McFarland

      LinusTechTips That mother can easily download many baby monitor apps and get a monitor for it. www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/baby-monitor/7d7a08dd-e5c6-4b11-b221-2f9b5f15c8da About Sonos, if your talking the wireless speakers, i don't understand why it wouldn't work. That's liek saying JBL doen't support iTunes. And that is kind of my point with Windows Phone, things just work for me, whereas for Android I have to MAKE it work. Like, for instance, syncing my contacts from Outlook. TOOK ME FOREVER to get it to work correctly. Findly figured out I had to download a STUPID app to make it work. Why should I have to do that, just because Apple says there is an app for that?

    It's pretty stupid to complain about the CONSISTENCY in windows phone to be honest. You Start out on your Start screen - with you so far - you slide down the notification center and tap on an email - it opens. With you so far. You then hit the BACK button. Where would any person in their right mind think you go to now?

      You have no idea how to run a business right? Developers have to live off of something and WP does not offer the userbase you need to make your investment worthwhile. Either MS has to pay them to make up for it or they simply won't do it - that's not "silly", that is them being reasonable. Also, the OS has enough flaws in and of itself.

    I find this video a bit biased.
    1. He says it is difficult to type but it is different experience for different people. Just because he doesn't like the swype function doesn't mean other people won't. The swype function, which is integrated to all wp8.1 keyboard enables me to type very fast. It even learns your most used words.
    2. If you want to demonstrate the camera app, then you should use the nokia one. It is absolutely brilliant. And there are a plenty of apps provided exclusively by Nokia like offline Here maps, Here drive etc which makes the windows phone experience better.
    3. There are already 300,000 apps in the store and most of the top iphone and android app are already there.
    4. Yes there are no official google apps like youtube for Windows phone but you have to blame google for that. Microsoft made a very good youtube app but Google blocked microsoft from assessing its APIs. But the 3rd party apps are very good as well. It does everything you need or want from the official google apps. And seriously, if you want to experience google then buy a f@#king android phone.
    5. Settings can be easily assessed by from the notification centre.
    6. Cortana is awesome.
    7. He completely missed how well it is integrated with all the Microsoft services like One drive, One note, Microsoft office etc, which can't be found on Android. Millions of people use these Microsoft services.
    8. He is picking on few apps which most people don't even know about.
    9. Windows phone is much more secure than Android.
    Windows phone works flawlessly for me. I was an IPhone user and I don't miss it even a bit. Stop expecting android's or iPhone features in WP. If you like Android, then be happy with it. If you like Apple, then be happy with it. Conflict arises when you expect android features in other platforms. And if you want to experience Windows phone, get the latest Lumia phone like the Icon or 830. Not this HTC...

    A lot of the issues that you complained about were from a lack of experience with the os. You can increase text size for readability, you can go back to the mail client by picking the mail icon in the drop down instead of the specific email, and a lot of the third party apps work well (seeing as I am using the third party TH-cam app, metrotube right now to type this)... I am okay with the lack of apps, because I quite frankly don't use most of the garbage cluttering up the play store... That is why I switched. And since when is the text prediction slow? The keyboard uses similar APIs as word, so it not only fixes spelling mistakes, but will also fix grammar mistakes automatically (such as its vs it's), and will also suggest next words based on what you were typing.

I like the UI, all the apps I need are here, it's fast, the camera is awesome (at least on Lumias)... My only complaint is the scam apps. But if you're dumb enough to pay for a facebook app or a new keyboard even though you can't change it, then you shouldn't be using a smartphone anyway...

      Xavier Gonzalez Have you tried SwiftKey? Does the stock keyboard learn what you intent to type? Can it be customised (size, layout, skin, etc.)? Can you adjust the long press duration? Can you change around the keyboard itself (arrow keys, numpads, etc.)? Heck, you can even un-dock the damn thing from the bottom of the screen and move it around. SwiftKey is still better. Granted not the most responsive (Google Keyboard wins in that area) but still better than most other stock keyboards.
      but you can't use it anyway.

      You are exactly on point on the OS.
      Usage numbers make the app environment and therefore the support of it (features - apps - variety- ease of use etc). Otherwise the core programming of this OS is by far the most well structured of the three.
      And for all is worth I'd rather have 3 very viable and different alternatives than 2 or 1 to rule them all...
      At last each and every one start thinking and making choices according to your taste, reason, knowledge and personal benefit as end users, not as the flock you chose to represent...

      2560x1440 5.7" display
      518 ppi
      20MP camera
      expandable memory up to 200Gb
      2.0 GHz octa-core
      triple flash
      iris scanner.
      Also, windows 10 mobile... which will make android and ios apps compatible with windows phone, so that developers can just transfer the apps, in stead of making a new one.
      so there will be way more apps.

    • @MuyenKamran1nehal
      @MuyenKamran1nehal 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      james wasda 1)The 950 XL wasn't announced when I wrote this comment.
      2) Specs aren't everything.
      3) The app support might get better but it's currently not as good as android or ios.
      4)Even when the app support does become as good as that of Android and IOS, Windows Phone will most likely not have the openness and customizability of Android since it is not an open source OS so android fans will probably not consider a Windows Phone. And Apple fans will also probably not consider one for certain reasons.

    • @shipwreck9146
      @shipwreck9146 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      AMK
      1) That is very true, and I just noticed that.
      2) true, specs aren't everything, but specs are a very large part of why to buy a phone, and buying a phone just because of its software is not well thought out.
      3) Currently it is not as good as android or ios, but that will improve soon
      4) Android being open source gives way for many viruses. I know many people who have complained about viruses on their android phones, and have seen ones that are literally unusable because of these viruses. That's why I will never use android.

    • @MuyenKamran1nehal
      @MuyenKamran1nehal 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      james wasda There are many android phones with all the latest specs and more of them are coming.
      And about the virus thing. If windows phone does mange to become popular it will also get many viruses. And there are 5 android phones and 2 android tablets in my home. None of them have ever gotten a virus. Some people do get viruses but a majority of people don't.
      But you know what get a Windows phone if you like it. It's your money not mine. You decide how you wanna spend it. I just don't see the point in getting a Windows phone.

    I have all 3 platforms (iOS, Windows Phone, and Android) and I think you were being a little unfair. I am not biased to one platform as I love them all for different reasons, but what can you expect Microsoft to do about Google apps not being on Windows Phone? They are more or less just as profitable as each other, no amount of money Microsoft offers will persuade Google, they just have to wait until they decide to stop being dicks. Also, about the wearable thing, Windows Phone does support SMS, emails, and phone calls to be pushed to wearables. In fact, Kreyos does exactly that (confirmed by manufacturers). Of course, it's not perfect, and I would even argue that it's quite behind in many areas, but you were far to dismissive and unfair in this review. You came in with a preconceived idea, instead of an open mind. Overall, I liked your video, because I knew you were genuine and sincere with the review, and that is all I look for, regardless if you agree with me or not.

    This what happens an iPhone fanboy reviews an windows phone. there are so many mistakes in this video. 3rd party you tube apps don't costs you anything and they're 10x better than iPhone and android you tube app.and cortana stays along to confirm when you ask something,you don't have to tap and mic.and in the notifications when you tap on the app name it takes you to full app. Yes it's not great compared to androids functionality but it's way better than iPhone. iPhone may have apps but it's locked down OS.

      1. Linus is an Apple fanboy? Sure, when he starts using the iOS version of the M8.
      2. Some 3rd party apps for services may be halfway decent but they (IMHO) don't match the general usability of the official apps. I HAVE tried then. So there.
      3. iPhone may be locked down now but Apple has promised 3rd party keyboard support, along with other APIs. Also, an argument could be made that WP8's lack of developer support in general makes it more locked down and limited than iOS.

      Altruistic First of all, SwiftKey is the name of a third party keyboard. Hey was complaining that third party keyboards aren't available, which is a legitimate complaint. I think the word you were looking for was "Swype," and he did address that it was already present.
      The reasons he brought up enthusiast usage is because a) that's the perspecticve he's coming from, and b) because the m8 is one of the most expensive phones out there. Again, seems reasonable.
      You really don't find much, if any, malware in the Android Play Store. At the very least, the bad apps don't last anywhere near a month before being taken down, especially when they bear the name of a well known third party keyboard...
      Which of his complaints weren't legitimate?

    The fact is that Linus use a WP as an Android.
    Using Gmail,Google +, TH-cam.
    He didnt tried TH-cam pro or metro tube apps (and the preinstalled youtube app is much better than the android app for my point of view because i prefer watch youtube on the navigator of my phone).
    Windows phone is Windows so u can't use it like an Android they are rival. On windows phone you use hotmail not Gmail, one drive not the google app. It's stupid to try using google apps on wp because google intentionnaly make them worst on windows phone. You wouldnt build a better car for your ennemy than yours?
    But all those problems can be fixed by using the windows phone navigator. Windows phone is so much faster, and never lost his power. My old lumia 800 is as fast as my mother's galaxy s3 in all days usage. I don't tell about my 925...
    Android users or iOS user's want to use their phone to play games or get a lot of apps that they uninstalll the same day. But on Windows phone the fact is that Nokia dominate the market so the best part of it is the photo part. Battery life are longer too, and when I see on Windows phone we have really good games, i don't want to return to android. We dont have 99999 apps. Most of our apps are not so good, but the fact is that good apps on windows phone outperformed all apps on iOS or Android.
    I runned on the Galaxy TEOS, saw the galaxy note, the s3, the s4, the tab, the iPhone4/4s/5/5s, iPad 1/2 and mini in my family. And i saw people replacing all their computer, tv etc just to say "all my apple devices are conected -_-".
    If i would give ONE advice to Linus is to try Windows phone as a new system and not use it as a google device because it is not a google device. I know he is a youtuber and it is difficult to not use all google apps but all of it work good on the navigator and all other windows phone features,for my point of view, outperformed android.
    SOrry for my bad english i'm french. I hope Linus read it and test again. (I would say that it would be better to try a Nokia like the 930 or 830 or any good nokia device than a HTC because HTC is not the best choice on windows phone.)

    @BklynBabe 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Hmmm...why do I love my lumia 925 Windows phone?
    Well, I don't need billions of apps and a phone that shatters easily....so no to Apple.
    My Android phone used to freeze and force close on phone calls, plus I got lied to about upgradeability, so I have no trust for them. Phone needs to be phone first!
    I've dropped my Nokia numerous times, but you can't tell. Love having the basics. Love that it is upgrading. I love the clean look of the tiles, and I love having something unique. That's who WP is made for. :)

    Linus, you need to sync the email for the draft thing to pop-up (same as in android Outlook, at least for me). Also the Outlook app settings need to be set up as to what to sync and what to ignore. The back button thing for GMail act the same, though they have the added button for going to the main inbox.
    But yeah doesn't look like Windows phone will be usable unless they change a lot of things and policies.

    I'm sorry Linus, but i don't agree with you on this one. Normally you're spot on when criticising a product, but most of the stuff you're criticising on here is just caused by the fact that you don't quite know how to use WP efficiently. You expect it to work like Android, but it simply doesnt in most cases. I think if you gave it some time, you'd find it more intuitive than android.
    Another thing: Although Windows apps run great on non-windows devices, they work FAR better on a Windows Phone, Where the android ones often just feel like a bad port (which is Microsofts own fault, but still).
    The apps store though... It's a freaking mess. For me this is the only serious dealbreaker.
    I switched from WP about 6 weeks a go (From Huawei Ascend W1 to HTC One m8). After having used Android for more than a month pretty intensively, i still think Windows has the superior interface, but app supprt and customizability on android is just far better.
    I think that if WP would support Android apps, it would be a serious competitor.

    The text size can be altered in the settings. The reason it was so small is because you have a full HD screen on that device and the standard text size scales to the resolution.
    Windows Phone is only really lacking official Google apps, the other apps that most people use every day are there (Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, IE, Instagram, vine etcetera) and yes some of them are supported by third party apps but that's not the worlds most difficult thing to deal with.
    The keyboard is actually the worlds second fastest smartphone keyboard (its crown was stolen earlier this year) and this is only the second major version of Cortana ever released, the next version will bring support for a "Hey Cortana" voice command.
    And Microsoft started cleaning out the store a couple of weeks ago.....

    Linus plz stick to pc stuff. You obviously haven't used the new 8.1 OS more than a couple of days. By far the worst review you made and that's not due to your negative opinion rather than the ignorance. I could counter argue most of your falsified cons of the OS but won't matter as I'm no fan boy and not into pointless online versus wars. As a WP, Android and IOS user do to each its right, and on this one you missed it by a long shot...

      +james wasda Viruses are still present on Windows Phone/ Mobile. There just isn't the user base to warrant much effort for creating them. +NuggetsTM One in five apps on the Google Play store is malware (And Google doesn't give a shit), and just as many sites host viruses for Android as they do for x86 versions of Windows.

    • @reaperreaper5098
      @reaperreaper5098 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      NuggetsTM Yes, all the fucking time. It doesn't even have to be a scketchy looking app. It isn't hard to become a verified developer on Google Play, impersonate a reputible developer, or even intercept application updates. The reputation Windows has built up regarding viruses (hasn't held true since 2005) is the reality of Android.

      After 4 years of having windows phones, a major flaw occurred that made me give in to Android. About a week after I updated to windows 10 mobile, my Lumia Icon did an auto-update while I was sleeping. And it didn't update correctly, and now it's forever stuck in an infinite boot loop. I can't even initiate a hard reset. Now I have a galaxy note 7. Fantastic phone.

    This is undoubtedly the worst "review" on this channel. This review if you can call it a review, can be easily summed up with the following "I love Android so much and I hate Windows Phone because it's not Android.".
    Linus from now on stick to what you're good at. To be more precise computer hardware. Don't ever "review" a phone, ever again.
    If you're really that desperate for views let Luke or Brandon or Ed or anyone to do phone reviews. But for the love of God just stay away from phones, it's not your domain.
    Seriously stay the fuck away from phones.

    Windows phone is my favorite OS, it allows you to customize the phone to your liking.
    arranging lives tiles, bigger icons for the apps that you use the most, which provide additonal info, details.
    I had the htc 8x since it became out till a few weeks ago.
    I bought the htc one m8(android), I just couldn't handle the lack of apps.
    i would gladly go back to it if it had more third party support, but for now I'm going to stick to android.

    Thank you for this video. It was very informative. I thought WP 8.1 was easy to use and intuitive, with less functionality, but perfect for someone like my dad.
    After watching this, I know that was a stupid idea. At least with Android, when he asks me how to do something, I can tell him or figure it out. But that "how do I go to other emails after I read this one" problem is just a huge dealbreaker.

  • @rgama78
    @rgama78 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I appreciate the review. I moved away from iPhone to this HTC windows phone not because I thought it might be better, but because I wanted something different...something new. To that end, this windows phone suits my needs perfectly. The lives tiles are incredibly convenient and cool and something that most of my Android and apple phone user friends are jealous of. Cortana is superior to Siri; the Blinkfeed news app is pretty cool; and the easy syncing with other windows and microsoft products is great for my work. I can't deny that the lack of apps is a major downfall, but not a deal breaker for me...I don't really need a million gaming apps to choose from.

    As a person who owns a windows phone I know exactly what you mean. I own a lumia 520, solely because it was the cheapest and most reliable phone at the time (this was a few months before the moto g released)
    I quite like the WP os for low end phones, but I really don't know why anyone would want that os on a high end phone. I intend to move away from the WP next time I get a phone as it just feels limited at times and really annoying to deal with the lack of certain apps.

    Having just moved back to Android from a Windows phone, i can honestly say that - if you need a work phone that is efficient at calling, messaging, exchanged based email, basic social networking and camera stuff. You know, the basic smart phone stuff. Windows Phone is amazing. But if you need any sort of non-standard or 3rd party apps - it's a deal breaker. You can always argue if you like the interface or not, but the interface is designed around efficiency, and it adds just that.
