Was Bill Gates right? Could Windows Phone have beat Android if things went their way? Probably not, but you never know. It's still cool though, and I wish it had been more successful. Did you ever have a Windows phone? Are any of you still somehow using one? Let me know if you are, there has to be somebody out there
I am using the lowest end windows phone lumia 430 still and using it from last 3 years as my primary phone just because they feel more smooth and messaging is great on windows phone..
i am still using my Windows Phone (Nokia Lumia 630) and i am SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPER happy with it and i find it very easy to use unlike Android and iOS and very idiot-proof and honestly i won´t switch till the day i die because i´ve had an Android phone before and it SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!! lol i started using my Nokia a few years ago when my Android phone pretty much went KAPUT and i don´t want to go back to Android ever again and game and app wise i have a whole bunch of games installed and i play them every day
My dad had on back in 2015 until July 2019 when he bought a NOKIA 3.1 plus. Because of ending support, His banking app stopped working, Facebook messenger ect... That Lumia now sits in drawer with the rest of Lumia's and Nokia dumphones
Dash120z - yeah, I had a Lumia 900. They didn’t update it past windows 8 (iirc) and there were virtually no apps for it. Otherwise, I loved it. Great camera as well.
lucas rem - can’t justify £1000 on a phone, so I just went from iPhone se to the Oppo Reno (£400) which has the Sony 48mp camera they all seem to have these days. The upgraded version (the Oppo Reno 10x) has an amazing camera on it... the 10x zoom is out of this world. A bit more expensive though at £600.
There was also the problem with OEMs having to pay for the OS, having to pay royalties to Microsoft, having to pay for each update rollout, having to follow Microsoft's strict rules and regulations governing the hardware, software and even the marketing business of OEMs that chose to release Windows Phone devices. In comparison Android was absolutely free and open source, while the only fee was a single payment for registering Android devices, which was just a small symbolic fee. Windows Phone was also a failure due to bad business decisions on Microsoft's side.
Windows Phone has honestly my favorite mobile UI. It's slick, fluid and exceptionally easy on eyes with the native high-contrast and bold fonts (especially WP7/8/8.1). It looks and works absolutely great. I figure it was some bad decisions on the manufacturer guidelines and very poor 3rd party support that really killed it. It's a shame, it was nice to have something different!
I used to have a Lumia 521 and I loved the love tiles and the keyboard and the lock screen and it's just had a very productive set up which is something I truly miss
I loved my Lumia 640 and wish Microsoft was still making them. The live tiles on the home screen are amazing and it’s so fluid when using the OS. The keyboard is awesome too and I type better on that than my iPhone. It really was an enjoyable phone to use
13:53 Still reason to use Windows phones. Can use it as a wi-fi hotspot, calls and texts as mentioned here, can take photos, use as removable storage. You can buy them cheap second hand now and replace the battery easily if needs be.
700club too expensive and androids are more open for custom apps and there’s A LOT more variety. Ranging from big batteries, really good screens, etc. or a combination of a few. And most still have headphone jacks lol. And plus many many many brands for android to choose from Samsung, lg, hawei. You get it. Also this reply shouldn’t be taken to seriously.
Trio LOL Gamers They did lol, they port alone a game such Candy Crush (I don't care but it wqs really popular back in days), the problem was the war that Google started against Microsoft, they remove all gapps available. This is why it fail, no gapps (TH-cam, Gmail, Google Photos etc).
I just stopped using my 950 as main phone last weekend. It'll probably be a navigation only from now. I still love windows mobile, because of all the little things. The nav bar, double tap on it to lock, double tap on screen to wake, no need to reach the power button and never woke up in my pocket. Why? Because it uses the proximity sensor and turns the screen completely off when something covers the top of the phone. The quick actions, you can customize them and you can see what it is, not just a few icon with a sometimes dumb symbol. Glance screen is great, especially with the wallpaper on it. Keyboard is the best of all keyboards. With dark mode on every app switched to dark mode too. You can set themes (just basic colour themes though) without making another account (samsung). I love the design since windows 8. Removeable battery. Plastic back cover makes it cheap? With glass on both sides something will break when it's dropped, and sooner or later every phone gets dropped. The retina scan worked quite well for me. Yes there were pretty much no third party apps. but the browser was there, it worked, until now. It is not supported by many websites anymore. All microsoft had to do to keep it useable is to keep the browser up to date, until they have a new phone on the market, but no. Now I have a samsung s8 with android 9 on it. The first couple of days were pretty bad with it, now I guess it'll do. It doesn't connect to outlook account, had to download contacts from the website then import manually. The iris scan is a joke. Hard press to unlock is not bad, but had a few unwanted unlocks already. Sure the screen is bigger, but the extra part at the bottom is taken up by the buttons and videos are still in 16:9, so I just can't see the point. Speaker on the bottom, when I turn the phone horizontal I cover it with my hand. The fingerprint sensor on the back is really far to reach, but works alright. I have all microsoft apps on it, but groove music doesn't work, their android keyboard is far from the windows mobile keyboard, big shame. Microsoft really shot themselves in the head. Pushed everybody to android or ios, but even there took some things away.
Same with blackberryOS. I loved it so much , unfortunately developers did not put much effort into these platforms which eventually brought their premature end.
I really liked my old windows phone. I believe the one I had was a Dell venue pro, and it had a really neat convex screen with a physical keyboard that slid vertically. I always thought the operating system was way faster than the Android phone that I had at the same time
I cry because it's only ios and android. Blackberry is on a suicide mission and, although I'm not a windows anything user, it would be nice to have at least one more option.
Yeah, I get mad when people shout about the incomplete and inconsistent dark mode in Android like is the ultimate thing, when WP has it from the beginning. It was beautiful in a AMOLED display.
This phone had watsapp dark mode. And it was so awesome. The whole design and feel was just amazing. Never once lagged and was always fast. The only problem was that they couldn't keep up with the changing times
Oh yes! I used a windows phone for a year as my daily driver back in 2012. I was selling cell phones at the time and I loved it. It had the smoothest touch screen I'd seen at the time. Also for a long time Netflix was only on windows phone so that was cool. This was the most accurate review I have seen of windows phone. Great job!
Windows Phone felt so cool. The tiles looked amazing and it was fun to customize. The animations were so slick and satisfying. I'm genuinely sad they died.
I liked the tiles more, making the home screen useful. Widgets can do this on Android, but I think they are really outdated and ugly and iOS the home screen is very static. Even though, iOS and Android kinda borrowed the design of showing some kind of info with the number on the icon. WP had a lot of cool ideas before Android and iOS.
@@lordeilluminati You can basicly do the same with the icons while looking better. Or just download another launcher and customize like you want. If you have Android offcourse. iOS is very locked down and booring.
Anything you say, I confirm it. My Android Pixel, everything is so jerky. Everything is not thought through to the end. Most apps are bad. Even the Microsoft apps are no good on Android. Windows 10 mobile is a big loss. Even with security. Each app worked in Windows mobile in a sandbox. And the hobbyist-OS Android? To see such an outdated home screen like in Android, I had 1999 on my PDA with Palm-OS. Even there, surface customization worked. Microsoft loses even now its shop. He it's now not necessary, without Windows mobile 10.
i still have my lumia 520, but i use it as my alarm clock. honestly windows was great for me, the inter-phase was pretty good, i would choose it over android, and i believe people just hated on microsoft a bit, yea it had problems but they werent huge. if it came back and was good, people would still reject it, just for the fashion of ios and android
I just switched from a Lumia 950 to Samsung S20 2 weeks ago -The camera used in manual mode gave results and control that you didn't have on the competitors. I exclusively used it in manual mode and had great results with people being amazed at the results, even in the last few weeks. -The camera could record 4K for more then 10 mins, with this phone never had an issue recording the Sydney NYE fireworks.... something Android hasn't been able to do. I'll find out with the S20 on this issue soon enough -Windows phone has been providing the assistant over Bluetooth voice profile since 2011 (Which is how long I've been using it), my car doesn't support Bluetooth multimedia profile. Cant speak for iPhone, but Android still doesn't do this -Cortana hands free on windows phone to text verbally while driving is still superior to offerings that android has. Get a message, she lets you know over the car speakers anmd asks if you wanna ready it. Wanna send a message, Tell Cortana to text a contact, she'll conform, the recipient and the message then ask if you want to add more or send. This is still frustrating on Android where just getting the assistant to make calls or messages hands free doesn't work, you end up dialling the wrong person or sending an incomplete or random message. -Cortana sounds more pleasant to me then google or Siri, when when it wasn't always Jen Taylor -The windows phone dallier was modular, you could plug in a heap of different modals into the dallier, so you had a proper functioning OS dallier, but with other functions like 3rd party caller ID systems and OS level phone recording (Android 10 doesn't like phone recording, but in Australia, it's a must, still trying to work that one out) -The iris scanner worked really well for me and I used it every day. It was fast, it worked at a glance, worked in pitch black and I didn't even have to hold the phone up. I do recall it had an issue with people who wore glasses though. I left because the phone started to slow down, email app was starting to get a bit buggy and MS had pulled enough services to make it no longer saleable to keep using
MrDoge - no apps = most of your target audience walking away. For such a huge company, how they couldn’t leverage their muscle to get their way with apps, I don’t know.
Even Microsoft stopped app support and made better apps for ios/android while their own platform was neglected. Ebay developed better app support on Windows Phone and saw that Microsoft didn't care so their app eventually stopped working since ebay stopped supporting the backend.
Two main apps I used when I had a windows phone were twitter & facebook but both companies support for them was so terrible, Instagram app surprisingly I remember got pretty good support & updates which made me start using it more than those other two.
@@JohnnyKusiga those 2 main apps were installed on Windows Phone or Windows 10 mobile? I recall never having to install those apps until W10M replaced WP8 because I linked both twitter and Facbook to my microsoft id . In WP7/8 these 2 services just showed up in my notifications and dm showed up via text messages. I never had to launch any apps like facebook messaging and twitter didn't have an official app untilW10M. Instagram was definitely a W10M app because it never existed for WP7/8 but even Instagram worked just fine via browser.
I remember wanting one of these so badly. I literally would search for windows theme on the play store so that my phone would look like a lumia. But definitely, windows did play wrong. Overconfidence and dumb marketing killed there product. Like looking at it now, back then Google and android did not have an eco system to boast about but Windows did. It would have been so good if they used a little head and not overconfidently taking apple and Google for granted..
one of the reasons i am still on samsung note9 is that note10 has removed iris scan for no reason. been using iris since it was implemented in note8 and its still the most secure way along with fingerprint. gotta admit this lumia seems very advanced especially for 2015 - wish windows mobile stayed alive
I use it on my 950 with both antireflex glasses and polarized sunglasses and it works great. I laugh at people that can't unlock their flagships using a facemask while I can. The Iris Scanner was improved in the latest fixes it received.
Yes, the keyboard! I had been using Lumia for years and I loved it! When I had to switch to iPhone, I just couldn’t get used to new keyboard. In fact, after 4 years with an iPhone I still consider it as an uncomfortable keyboard.
I remember my Lumia 920. Quite a lot ahead of it's time : wireless charging , OIS and night mode which some phones can't beat 7 years later , amazing build quality and design just to name a few. Lack of it's WP Market expansion and quality apps plus a sub mediocre battery I think were the major drawbacks of the whole experience.
Still have mine. The battery died after 7 years of use but I’ll hold on to it just in case I find a new battery for it then I’ll gladly start using it again. The best phone experience I’ve ever had.
god damn I miss windows phone so much. it was hands down my favorite of all three OS'es. such a slick user interface. my lumia 950xl was easily one of my favorite phones i've ever used. guess my note 9 fills the spot alright, but damn i miss W10M.
Windows Phone had a lot of well thought out features: 1: Security features could roll out independently, you were always getting updates from MS. 2: The UI was designed around practicality, not copying Android or iOS. (e.g. Bottom URL) 3: Good management of background battery usage and privacy. Great battery life on these things. 4: Early adoption of cutting-edge cameras and connectivity (USB-C). 5: Excellent keyboard (MS rolled in their expertise into SwiftKey for Android). 6: Actual GAMES in the Xbox store, not this microtransactional crap that's taken over. What killed it? 1. Lack of apps, many developers were not motivated to support so few users. 2. Google sabotaged MS's attempts at supporting TH-cam by claiming "illegal" use of their API. MS really laid the foundation for something great, it just lacked momentum. The balance between customization of Android and a well managed OS is kind of what Pixel aims to be these days. MS was very forward thinking in how they handled security, updates and managed apps, all of which Android has followed suit.
This was my first smartphone in junior high/high school and I remember I was sooooo mad about the lack of apps. Now I don’t use ig/Facebook/Snapchat and I wish I had this phone again 😭 I’d swap my iPhone XR for one of those bad boys in a heartbeat.
Same for me, i felt left out because it didn't have the same apps as other phones, but at the same time the apps that i loved were not in other phones so it was kind of special
The keyboard on the Windows Phone was the BEST. No other OS came even close. Sure I had to switch to Android eventually due to the app gap, but I miss it everyday.
heres some extra stuff to learn guys; always on display is actually a very old tech; you newbies just realized it after seeing on android but nokia was using it since 2010; its original name is glance screen. symbian anna had it and it got some supercool features in nokia belle era; it was the full screen background picture support; it was a great feature and NO THERE WAS NO AMOLED BURN PROBLEMS, even with those ancient amoled displays. apart from symbian nokias old futuristic legend meego had this feature as well. and ms also had the chance to add to their platform. unlike todays aod glance screen works with proximity sensor; if you put the phone on a desk; it shows the time and background pictue for say 3 minutes, than if theres no movement in front of the sensor wich always active the phone disables the glance screen in order to save battery. if theres a movement in front of the display than shows it again. pretty neat eh ? :) todays aod wich developed by samsung by mostly copying nokia works only with the accelometer whic is nonsense ;if you hold the phone you can unlock it as well so not a good itereation. theres nothing wrong with the copying a good stuf but they should have developed it more. ah that dark mode isnt a new stuff either; all symbian versions had a dark theme with respective grey accents. and wi had it from the start as well lumia 950 held the best camera record for 16 monts after its release. it got beaten by galaxy s7 which first samsung model with those good isocell sensors. even with todays so called ai tech that phone can still give good results and hold its ground thanks to zeiss lenses and pureview technology. its a pity we dont have it in new nokia phones. and that easily accessable url controld and stuff are mostly designed by nokia's old designer marko ahtisaari and android copied that swipe to open menu stuff chief.
@@spotsies amoled burn is a sad fate aof every amoled display, nokia lumia amoleds were no exception. but it takes time that to happen. my first amoled display smartphone was old nokia c601; its display had some burns in about 20 months; there was button shadows in the red and black background but there wasnt a red or pink hue. my lumia 925 which i always kept the brightness highest and used colorful ui elements had some amoled burns after 4 years of usage; there was bars and button shades in grey background. nokia glance screen was better at the display usage than the current always on display. so the amoled burn which becames les and less a problem in upcoming years was even less of a problem. yes you still could have suffer from it if your phone was very actively used but it was not because of the glance screen. dont get me wrong but i dont understand the peoples problem with the amoled burn problem; yes its problematic, yes its frustrating but you also should remember that lcd displays have more problems; stuck pixel (it can happen at anytime, on any display, theres no way to avoid ) dead pixel, low dynamic range etc.
Windows Phone was my first smartphone and after that, I just couldn't use android. Windows 10 is still far more superior to android and for many reasons. You mentioned a few of them (dark mode for example) but here are more reasons: One of them is resource management. Lumia 950xl with 3gig of ram can handle as many open apps as you want, but with Android, with even 4 gigs of ram, you're phone will slow down. You need a lot of apps to "clean your phone" or "optimize your battery" or all those things. Also, the file manager is far better on windows phone and you don't end up seeing your internal storage full for no reason. Also, the file explorer itself is way way better. The Lumia camera app gives you features for photography more than any phone device that I've seen. Windows continuum makes the android screen share to look like a joke. Back in 2016, you could have a working phone and a PC at the same time. You can do two different tasks simultaneously with continuum. Hey Cortana was another thing that you didn't mention. You can do many tasks without picking up your phone. I think the lock screen is more practical in windows too. I'm still using Lumia 950xl (I'm working from home, so I don't need many apps) and if I have to use android one day, I will surely install Microsoft Launcher first to make it more practical.
i am sure I've posted a commentary like this but it was like in 2017. Then i bought the brand new galaxy note 8 and that was a way through the note 9 and now the note 10 +. As I said, all the things that you explain are good, but it was in 2016, now the android phones has the same or more things that W10M does, like google now or/and Bixby for a good assistant, a good file explorer, (for me) Samsung dex is the best Phone to screen compatibility and it has windows 10 and mac connection, The samsung camera app is the best i know, it has a good Pro-mode and a lot of AI integrated that makes the best photos and from the note 8 I didn't saw any loading screen. At the end of my usage with the L950XL, it has a lot of bugs, screen freezing and some errors i didn't want to see anymore. I really enjoyed the W10 Experience then but now I am more comfortable with the Samsung experience, having a W10 WorkStation, a note10+ and a Macbook air 2018. EDIT: Sorry for my English but I am from Argentina, saludos boludo :D
@MrMorbello come on, 3 years in tech is like an era. You can't compare something new with something 3 years old. It only shows that what an advanced device and OS it was back then. You mentioned Dex, but Dex is still nothing compared to Continuum. You need a PC or laptop, a wired connection, and software on your PC to run it. Using an android emulator would be much easier. But with Continuum, you can use it even on your tv screen with wifi, no wires, no apps. So after 3 years, Dex is still very primitive compared to Continuum. All the other features you mentioned are relatively new, so you can imagine if WP was still around, how much more techs and features we could see.
I am still using my HP Elite X3. I bought three of them to keep me going for years and years. The phone still does everything I need it to do and has all the best apps I require to run my business so there is no way I will be switching to Android anytime soon. And absolutely never ever going down the iPhone rip off ecosystem. I know I will have to go Android eventually but while I have the three new HP phones as well as two new Nokia 1520's it just isn't going to happen. I'm hoping for another 10 years on my windows phones and who knows what's going to be around then.
Lol, I bought a 950 last year, I'm very careful with it, I hope it last. But probably we will have news from Microsoft in 2021, with the launch of W10X. Maybe the Surface Phones will have dual boot between Android and W10X.
i picked up a cheap x3 last week. didn't really dfo my research. trying to hack it to get the apps I want on it. Its a hell of a phone on its own but no support really sucks. If I can just get some andoird APKs on here I would be perfectly happy with the phone.
I had a Windows Phone until March 2019. It did all the basics like Email, Calendar, Phone, and SMS better than iOS and Android now, but lacked heavily on 3rd party apps. 91Tech forgot to mention that the "App Drawer" (as well as Contact List) had a quick jump feature where you can tap on any of the "letter headers" and quick jump to any other apps/contact names beginning with the letter of your choice. This made it easier to get to the app or contact you want rather than the quick vertical scroll in iOS and Android. Also, the three dots "..." (ellipsis) at the bottom of each app, meant you don't have to guess what each icon does in apps as a quick press on the three dots "..." (ellipsis) pops up a brief description of each icon. Wow, I feel illiterate while typing this -- it's quite difficult to explain without videos/GIFs/screenshots.
In my opinion, windows phone would've been at par with android and apple in only they stay for just a couple of years. The processors are getting so good the last couple of years, the continuum features would've benefit from that. And we've seen the revival of nokia, that nostalgic brand attachment only could've boosted windows phone. my first real smartphone was windows phone, so it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Microsoft took too long to develop Windows on arm and Windows 10X. Now they are forced to make specialized hardware for these 2 different platforms in order to be viable. Windows on Arm doesn't even had a fully developed telephony function so it can't be a phone os and Windows 10X was developed for Intel's chipset. It's as if they are purposely avoiding on creating a platform that can be both a full windows pc and a phone.
@@riopato2009 They also pretty much had no choice. Google wouldn't give support to critical apps that billions of people used. Microsoft eventually agreed to terms and began full investment on Android with Microsoft Launcher and other apps. Precisely why their Surface Phone is powered by Android. If they could go back and start over, they would do things differently to be the number 1/2 mobile OS.
Using the app list, instead of scrolling up and down, place your finger on one of the letters, then select the first letter of the name of what you're looking for. The same with contacts. It's a lot faster than scrolling.
I owned a couple different windows phones. I didnt mind them. At the time, they weren't bad. I liked the plastic casing. It seemed more durable. I loved having microsoft word on hand too.
I had the Lumia 635 sometime between 2012/2013 and aside from the limited things it could do I loved it. The interface was awesome and the display was honestly amazing, and dude yes, the keyboard was AMAZING.
Blame Microsoft for effing over developers. The horrible transition process from Windows Phone 7 to WP8 (and then to W10M) meant the platform was doomed from the beginning.
I'd kill Windows Phone too if I became the CEO in 2014. The current strategy of embracing all platforms is leaps and bounds better for consumers than trying (and failing) to emulate Windows' domination in mobile.
Honestly, out of all the phones I had in the past, I liked the Windows Phone the most. Now, the lack of apps and games was certainly a huge issue, but at the time I didn't really mind since I mostly used it to play the occasional game or to chat via Facebook. But there is just something about the OS, be it the UI, the user experience, etc. that really made me fall in love with it.
the whole pureview thing failed pretty badly because casual users love their automatic image processing. I still to this day don't understand why people want their pictures taken from 24 megapixel cameras to be botched by some bs automatic processing.
I still use my 950 as main phone (previously I had the 630 and 640). The Iris Scanner was slow and inconsistent when I bought it a year ago, so I didn't use again until I tried a few weeks ago and it works great! Just about 0.2-0.3 seconds, and it even works with sunglasses and a face mask (yeah, in your face coronavirus XD). It was probably thanks to the last updates in December and February I think. The 950 has a better button layout than the 950XL, it's less sharp, and the camera button in very practical for me, specially as shutter, instead of hitting the screen. The camera is great, that's the main reason I bought it, a modern phone with a similar camera cost 4 times more. I like the plastic cover, since it's cheap and easy to replace when it breaks, and you can swap batteries or disconnect the SD. The only problem is that is not as functional and protective like in the old Lumias, that were thicker and cover better the side of screen, though there were bulkier. About the apps, I never cared for games or social media apps. And for any serial work I use my Windows tablet/convertible. The only one that hit me a little was the removal of WhatsApp, but now I use Telegram and my most important contacts have it too. I'll keep use it until 2021 when Microsoft (or their partners) release a W10X phone. I'll never touch an Android phone again. If I'm forced to use another phone for work, I'll just buy and old iPhone SE as secondary.
Got one has my work phone today and Is love it. Former 1020 daily user last windows Phone i used until today. I have a Android since i stored my yellow 1020. Never going to sell my 1020 love it to bits.
Couldn't agree more with the fact that iris scanner works even with face mask on. I still have 950XL and can't relate to iPhone users complaining about Face ID not working with their masks on (despite inconsistent results from Windows Hello, maybe due to the lack of optimizations) I use the phone occasionally, even during vacations because of its capable camera performance. I wish that the lack of apps wasn't an issue for Windows Phone, but oh well.
I am a huge fan of Windows Phone. Used it in both Lumia 800 and Lumia 535. I still feel it was ahead of time and people just weren't ready for it, even though it was perfect (as optimized as iOS and basically more functional that the iOS. I'm now using iOS and Android (android on my secondary phone) and I must admit that I still miss the good old days of Windows Phone. Btw, I think the camera button was just great!
My wife and I still use our Alcatel Idol 4S... We have still managed to live without Android ;) There are a number of apps that are finally ending there support this year, but most of them offer most things with their browser version. Between these and our set of Surfaces we get by just fine ;)
@@lucasrem windows 10 support for ARM64 is kind old, and if you don't know what I am talking about you are free to Google "snapdragon 8cx" or "Microsoft sq1".
@@hanscardoso6427 I just found out that some people are able to put Windows 10 in ARMs hardware ( Lumia 950xl) . I think Microsoft already experimented with this when they introduced Windows 8.1 on tablets that run ARMS hardware (Lumia 2520 ) . Sorry for my bad English
I already tried it, Windows 10 on ARM runs smoothly on Lumia 950 XL, but there are compatibility issues with the hardware that they are still working with.
The HTC Radar was Awesome!!! I loved it!!! Then i eventually upgraded to the Nokia Lumia 640 which was even better! Windows phone was great! I'm kinda sad they discontinued it, but I do enjoy my Android phone now-a-days, because of the plethora of apps and it's just awesome ;) But I do wish windows phone would come back. I would probably give it a shot again if it had a lot of app backing.
I'm still using a 950 as principal phone and an iphone SE as secondary. I love the windows phone experience and I hope that microsoft will give his mobile os to the open source community.

Same situation as me. Don't want to be trapped in the Apple eco system and Android feels like a cheap knock off hybrid of iOs/Windows phone. Always on display doesn't even work unless you have it plugged in to charge on my Nokia-HMD phone. Every basic function on Android has to have an app installed if you decide to get a pure android device. Can't play a certain video format? Here, download one of a hundred of apps to play it. Using a third party app that needs permission to access your data? Download this app to add basic support for that app. It's stupid.
@@minttt_ I'm using Microsoft launcher and using all of their apps that allows me to sync everything windows to my phone. This allows me to minimize my association to everything Google.
@@TheFourthWinchester The camera app from Lumia 1020 and later 950xl was ported to Android on the Nokia Purview 9. I'm familiar with it without learning a new camera app when it comes to manual shooting in raw format. The 5 lenses interested me along with light technology. The other brands are overhyped, over priced and the skins are locked down while Nokia receives more updates faster than any of the Pixel phones from Google which is ironic. I originally wanted the Huawei P20 pro for the camera but had the same issue with the oem skin. Basically I wanted a phone that is pure Android so I can hide all the apps that is Google related as much as I can and let every Microsoft apps take it's place which made the phone closer to Windows Phone as much as possible. I didn't need to install Your Phone app in order to sync sms messages to Windows because of this. One Plus also interested me but lost out to the Nokia which I got on sale at my local Bestbuy that made it a lot cheaper than what they had to offer and One Plus cameras were never that great compared to any of the Nokia phones.
I very much loved my windows phone. Had three of them during their lifetime and only switched because Verizon didn't have any of them at the time. The switch to Android was difficult, but at least the app ecosystem helped with the transition
I was using one until 2018 October! It still works fine! I will really shift to windows phone if they come back to the market! The only reason is it's classy, the accent color customization, dark mode (which many android phones still struggle to implement). Here Maps, Music...
3:59 Then you might want to take your glasses off?? On my Samsung even when you first register your irises then it would tell you to remove them. Sometimes it works with them for me but most of the time I use the fingerprint
For a 2015 OS Windows is very smooth with very impressive animations, Android at the time and still couldn't/can't compare and IOS just got fluid transitions and animations so wow
I never owned a windows phone , but always wondered if i could side-load programs like on the desktop. If that is possible, i will definitely consider buying that phone just as a backup phone in which i can watch Netflix when i am bored
The epitaph on Windows' grave will be: "Always too early and too late". They were just too late getting into the market in this case. But, as an iPhone user, they did so many things better than both Android and Apple. They were really good phones, and the OS was great as well.
My love for Windows Phone is forever 💔 Dark mode was available from the day one of windows phone 7 I don't remember when the last time I play candy crush saga Windows Phone in 2020? An operating system for feature phone?
Lumia phones were really cool. I wish that the HMD global Nokia phones would revisit the Lumia design language with stock android installed. Especially since they already do retro and throwback phones.
It wasn't Microsoft's or Android's fault. Google decided not to make their apps available and a lot of companies and developers followed Google. The sad truth is, most of us can't live our lives without using Google apps. If only Google had their apps on Windows, some of us would be using a Windows phone today. People really loved Windows.
Well, I still use my 520. You may be surprised to know I also have a 810 and a 735 but I like the 520 better because of the size. The store no longer works, but the Maps can still be updated. I still use the GPS with Drive and 95% of time it works wonderfully, while 5% throws me in horrible situations with freezing, showing the wrong way, loosing track, etc. It's made by Windows, that's the norm. By the way, I had Windows 10 Mobile on another 730 and it was a total and complete disaster of system, fancy looking menus with microscopic buttons impossible to touch. Microsoft got (yet another) 'smart' manager who said, Oh, what this phone needs to be more popular is a fancy looking interface. And they killed what was the best thing about the phone: easiness of use. That's how it goes in the industry, you have a team of smart people putting out a good product, then there comes another team and ruins everything. Stay with Win 8 mobile, forget about the fancy looking menus in Win 10 mobile. Windows Phones were/are for people who don't need 2000 apps to stay alive. Just phone, camera, GPS and a few games for fun. I had an Android phone and felt like throwing it against a wall: have to type a tiny icon to do everything on it, including calling. Windows phones were phones, not mini tablets. For the 10-20% of people. Too bad Microsoft ended it. It doesn't bring big revenue so let's end it. Big company without leadership.
Was Bill Gates right? Could Windows Phone have beat Android if things went their way? Probably not, but you never know.
It's still cool though, and I wish it had been more successful. Did you ever have a Windows phone? Are any of you still somehow using one? Let me know if you are, there has to be somebody out there
Yes. Some friend of my mothers randomly came in our house 3 days ago and gave us a windows phone, what a coincidence.

My dad had on back in 2015 until July 2019 when he bought a NOKIA 3.1 plus. Because of ending support, His banking app stopped working, Facebook messenger ect... That Lumia now sits in drawer with the rest of Lumia's and Nokia dumphones
I am still using it as a antique phone.
Windows Phone was awesome it was faster, stable and way more optimized than Android.. the only problem was it's lack of apps.
And the crashy browser
There was also the problem with OEMs having to pay for the OS, having to pay royalties to Microsoft, having to pay for each update rollout, having to follow Microsoft's strict rules and regulations governing the hardware, software and even the marketing business of OEMs that chose to release Windows Phone devices. In comparison Android was absolutely free and open source, while the only fee was a single payment for registering Android devices, which was just a small symbolic fee.
Windows Phone was also a failure due to bad business decisions on Microsoft's side.
Exactly.. it was super stable and optimized compared to android.
Honestly, Microsoft needs to retry on making a windows phone. I loved my windows phone.
JDNGAMER they
Might if they market them to Xbox and pc gamers

I would still be using it if they had app support
I also enjoyed my Windows phone. I was really hoping they would replace it with a Surface phone. No dice though... 8( Now I use a Pixel.
Especially now when more apps are on the Microsoft store
Windows Phone has honestly my favorite mobile UI. It's slick, fluid and exceptionally easy on eyes with the native high-contrast and bold fonts (especially WP7/8/8.1). It looks and works absolutely great. I figure it was some bad decisions on the manufacturer guidelines and very poor 3rd party support that really killed it. It's a shame, it was nice to have something different!
I'm I the only person who enjoyed windows phone? I felt as though it was cool.
You are not the only one. I really enjoyed my lumia 720, and if Windows Phone was a thing now I would probably use it

I miss WIndows Phone a lot and I'm still salty they decided to discontinued it. It was a great OS and I really loved it.
A Nadella decision and also because they didn't paid developers to brought apps on their OS.

Being honest i also love windows mobile but the apps ecosystem just suck

Hello, Windows phone was born with dark mode. The UI was dark starting all the way from WP7.
True, since most Lumias had *led displays
And android 10 and ios 13 run behind WP..
Yeah, I get mad when people shout about the incomplete and inconsistent dark mode in Android like is the ultimate thing, when WP has it from the beginning. It was beautiful in a AMOLED display.

The tiles (and offcourse the lack of apps) was one of the reasons I did not like WP
Still using a Microsoft Lumia 640 for business. No problem at all.
i still have my lumia 520, but i use it as my alarm clock. honestly windows was great for me, the inter-phase was pretty good, i would choose it over android, and i believe people just hated on microsoft a bit, yea it had problems but they werent huge. if it came back and was good, people would still reject it, just for the fashion of ios and android
Tha burner phone huh?

I really do miss windows phone 8, my brother had an HTC 8x, I still remember the notification sounds and other sounds that it made.
Windows phone was my favorite phone the UI was absolutely gorgeous as well as HTCs!
I just switched from a Lumia 950 to Samsung S20 2 weeks ago
-The camera used in manual mode gave results and control that you didn't have on the competitors. I exclusively used it in manual mode and had great results with people being amazed at the results, even in the last few weeks.
-The camera could record 4K for more then 10 mins, with this phone never had an issue recording the Sydney NYE fireworks.... something Android hasn't been able to do. I'll find out with the S20 on this issue soon enough
-Windows phone has been providing the assistant over Bluetooth voice profile since 2011 (Which is how long I've been using it), my car doesn't support Bluetooth multimedia profile. Cant speak for iPhone, but Android still doesn't do this
-Cortana hands free on windows phone to text verbally while driving is still superior to offerings that android has.
-Cortana sounds more pleasant to me then google or Siri, when when it wasn't always Jen Taylor
-The windows phone dallier was modular, you could plug in a heap of different modals into the dallier, so you had a proper functioning OS dallier, but with other functions like 3rd party caller ID systems and OS level phone recording (Android 10 doesn't like phone recording, but in Australia, it's a must, still trying to work that one out)
-The iris scanner worked really well for me and I used it every day. It was fast, it worked at a glance, worked in pitch black and I didn't even have to hold the phone up. I do recall it had an issue with people who wore glasses though.
I left because the phone started to slow down, email app was starting to get a bit buggy and MS had pulled enough services to make it no longer saleable to keep using
I feel like windows phone would’ve been successful if it actually had app support
Instagram was definitely a W10M app because it never existed for WP7/8 but even Instagram worked just fine via browser.
its biggest issue for apps, was that most developers just didn't know about it.
The BEST user interface af oll time. I love W10M.
I guess I'm crazy but that selfie looked fine to me.
Yeah, I actually liked it too. xD
SquareHome 2 is the closest it can get in combination with Whicons, if you're on Android.

Lack of it's WP Market expansion and quality apps plus a sub mediocre battery I think were the major drawbacks of the whole experience.

Windows Phone had a lot of well thought out features:
1: Security features could roll out independently, you were always getting updates from MS.
2: The UI was designed around practicality, not copying Android or iOS. (e.g. Bottom URL)
3: Good management of background battery usage and privacy.

The keyboard on the Windows Phone was the BEST. No other OS came even close. Sure I had to switch to Android eventually due to the app gap, but I miss it everyday.
heres some extra stuff to learn guys;
always on display is actually a very old tech; you newbies just realized it after seeing on android but nokia was using it since 2010; its original name is glance screen.
symbian anna had it and it got some supercool features in nokia belle era; it was the full screen background picture support; it was a great feature and NO THERE WAS NO AMOLED BURN PROBLEMS, even with those ancient amoled displays. apart from symbian nokias old futuristic legend meego had this feature as well. and ms also had the chance to add to their platform.
unlike todays aod glance screen works with proximity sensor; if you put the phone on a desk; it shows the time and background pictue for say 3 minutes, than if theres no movement in front of the sensor wich always active the phone disables the glance screen in order to save battery. if theres a movement in front of the display than shows it again.
pretty neat eh ? :) todays aod wich developed by samsung by mostly copying nokia works only with the accelometer whic is nonsense ;if you hold the phone you can unlock it as well so not a good itereation. theres nothing wrong with the copying a good stuf but they should have developed it more.
ah that dark mode isnt a new stuff either; all symbian versions had a dark theme with respective grey accents. and wi had it from the start as well
lumia 950 held the best camera record for 16 monts after its release. it got beaten by galaxy s7 which first samsung model with those good isocell sensors. even with todays so called ai tech that phone can still give good results and hold its ground thanks to zeiss lenses and pureview technology.
its a pity we dont have it in new nokia phones.
and that easily accessable url controld and stuff are mostly designed by nokia's old designer marko ahtisaari
and android copied that swipe to open menu stuff chief.
as always, nokia been the trendsetter since the dawn. leaving the Nippon, way beyond.
this actually goes back at least as far as Nokia 7650 from 2002
I refuse to believe that windows' amoled screens aren't susceptible to burn in
@@spotsies amoled burn is a sad fate aof every amoled display, nokia lumia amoleds were no exception. but it takes time that to happen.
my first amoled display smartphone was old nokia c601; its display had some burns in about 20 months; there was button shadows in the red and black background but there wasnt a red or pink hue.
my lumia 925 which i always kept the brightness highest and used colorful ui elements had some amoled burns after 4 years of usage; there was bars and button shades in grey background.
nokia glance screen was better at the display usage than the current always on display. so the amoled burn which becames les and less a problem in upcoming years was even less of a problem.
yes you still could have suffer from it if your phone was very actively used but it was not because of the glance screen.
dont get me wrong but i dont understand the peoples problem with the amoled burn problem; yes its problematic, yes its frustrating but you also should remember that lcd displays have more problems; stuck pixel (it can happen at anytime, on any display, theres no way to avoid ) dead pixel, low dynamic range etc.
Yeah. My N8 had Glance screen. Gawd I missed my N8. The camera is ahead of its time.
I'm still using Lumia 950xl (I'm working from home, so I don't need many apps) and if I have to use android one day, I will surely install Microsoft Launcher first to make it more practical.

yea, i struggle to accept android for the same reasons, i dont know why people make android this great os, its a cope for me
Install laucher10 on android and you'll have closest thing to wp. Dont bother with Microsoft launcher as its almost like stock android...
i am sure I've posted a commentary like this but it was like in 2017.
I liked mine, wish they had kept going. Still use it as a glorified MP3 player and the game Dragon's Blade.
I would love to see Windows phone back
I loved the tiles, HERE Maps app and usability, if they made one I'd definitely ditch my Samsung
But the lack of apps tho

Oh wow I forgot that was a thing!
Yes, that contact quick scroll was very convenient, though as a kid I didn't have many people to call on my 720 haha
same here. I onlly moved from windows mobile to android in 2019 because I was going to travel without laptop and needed more apps

The windows phone ui was really snappy, and innovative big props to the Microsoft team for trying.
Completely blame app developers for downfall of windows phone
just one app it's:
snapchat
Industry Hitjob
Blame Microsoft for effing over developers. The horrible transition process from Windows Phone 7 to WP8 (and then to W10M) meant the platform was doomed from the beginning.
Blame Americans for being slaves to their Google and apple cooperate overlords too brainwashed to try something new and better.
I'd kill Windows Phone too if I became the CEO in 2014. The current strategy of embracing all platforms is leaps and bounds better for consumers than trying (and failing) to emulate Windows' domination in mobile.
WP Dark Mode > iOS and Android Dark Mode Combine.
@Shaun G why they don't use black since most phones are amoled today
Honestly, out of all the phones I had in the past, I liked the Windows Phone the most. Now, the lack of apps and games was certainly a huge issue, but at the time I didn't really mind since I mostly used it to play the occasional game or to chat via Facebook. But there is just something about the OS, be it the UI, the user experience, etc. that really made me fall in love with it.
You should try BlackBerry OS. Those BlackBerry phones are really cheap, and there's also a Tablet to replace your iPad too!

Blackberry 10 was pretty good. I had a passport and still have q10 that I use every now and then. Wish bb10 would have got more popular.

cameras with Zeiss pureview on lumias were the best cameras at that time. And the keyboard is also the best.
the whole pureview thing failed pretty badly because casual users love their automatic image processing. I still to this day don't understand why people want their pictures taken from 24 megapixel cameras to be botched by some bs automatic processing.
loved the "thwock" sound of the keyboard when the keys were pressed
I have a 950XL 1520 and an iphone 11 pro max, still prefer to use windows over iOS even android
I just bought the Lumia 950 for camera few days ago bt the battery on mine is really pathetic , r u facing any too?
TBH windows phone are pretty good... I'm still using it. The only problem is lack of apps.
Yup
I'm still useing Windows Phone in 2019
I love it.
All Microsoft had to do was allow Google to use HTML5 for its apps. That's what it would've cost for Windows phone to succeed.
