Both options are a step backwards and people like yourself, and society at large can't see it.

I am afraid with this retreat of windows mobile, Microsoft will have to amp up prices elsewhere like the subscriptions. Learning the MSFT apps does take a bit but once mastered wow they become invaluable.

The best interface by far. Fast and fluid. It was the app gap that killed it. A real shame. I nearly bought one of those hp phones but had to admit it was a dying system and went back to Android which is not as good as an OS but the apps are there and you can't deny that it is the apps that make or break a mobile OS

    • @steveheist6426
      @steveheist6426 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Daniel Warner It's apps that make or break an OS full stop. For the same reason Windows Phone never took off, Linux doesn't have much of a foot in the door when it comes down to users on desktops.

App gap is a vicious circle. No one wants to use Windows Phone because the lack of apps, and developers won't develop apps for Windows Phone because the lack of users.
The UI is really good for old people though. Big tiles are easy to see and tap, and the high contrast makes it easily readable.

    • @tubeMonger
      @tubeMonger 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Daniel Warner, the fact is that 99.99% of PCs come either with Windows or OS X pre-installed. From those, how many users are gamers? Most of them? I highly doubt it.
Also, to my understanding, GNU/Linux distros support Valve games. I wouldn't know if its all the Valve games or just some of them because I'm not a gamer.

My dad uses it and he refuses to change to newer model. The expected problems are: - spontaneous shut downs, - problems to unlock the screen, - updating the device because it appears that sometimes updating skips updates and this causes problems because the update are created to be loaded in chronological order. This causes that user has to reset the phone to factory settings and load updates again. But there are lots of good things too: the UI is very logical if one has used windows before especially the option to pin things on the home screen and have live tiles , the photo program is awesome (I had Nokia 2010), I had no problems with the battery.

I loved my Windows Phone and only switched because certain apps where not compatible any more. Microsoft pushed allot of technologies first. My Microsoft 950 phone had an optical image stabiliser for the rear camera.. iris recognition... Cable-less charging, USB type C charging. Micro SD expansion card... Removable battery... That Continuum technology which you showed off in this vid. And that was all in 2015!!
Imagine that. Also I still think the Windows OS was the easiest to use... Its settings menu was very well laid out... Unlike android.
Finding a specific setting in android is a headache. I prefer to search how I'm going to find a particular setting in Google before I attempt to find it in Android.
In Windows Phone you could pin any part of an app to the home screen. So for example... you are curious about cinema times on Tuesdays. Well Pin that section to the home screen and when you click on it it takes to to the page you want. No navigating through menu's.
I pinned the train times for a particular route and time to my home screen. So all i had to do it press one icon and viola I am at the right page. It was an amazing feature. Well beyond what Android and Apple could do back then, and still beyond those two platforms.
Consumers need a third option apart from Apple or Android. It is a BIG shame they are gone as less competition does not drive innovation and they can charge what they feel for their products examples being 1000 bucks for a phone, which you'll most likely keep for 2 years.

The problem was Microsoft. all they had to do was give out the OS for free, and charge basically nothing for a while on the app store to get more applications by the big guys to support it. They could of gained a massive market share for a superior OS. I really hate Android, and no interest in iOS. As of now the only application on my Windows phone which gets updates anymore, besides Microsoft applications, is WhatApp. WhatsApp only gets bug fixes, and no new features which Android, and iOS gets.

Treefinger1 best marketing in the world can make anything seem and look good. For example Beats headphones. One of the worst quality wise yet still they charged a premium and tons of people got attached to it because of big celebrities endorsements. Same could be said for Apple, majority of people years ago when apple first started got attached to it because of its marketing but guess what, 90% of people just used it just as much as what a budget phone could do but bought it just to pretty much say "I have a iPhone".

koolyo2foots I'm not sure it was a marketing thing they rushed leased Nokia mobile and then didn't seem to know what to do they should have focused on developing their mobile software platform then jump into the hardware. heavily focused on app Developers. The unification of mobile and PC applications had tremendous potential. And could have conceivably overtaken Google consider writing one app that would work on both your phone and your PC with extremely minor modification it would be an app developers heaven. I really was rooting for it but observing the attitude towards updates and release of new flagship phones I decided not to invest in their ecosystem

The main difference between WP7/8/8.1/W10M and Android/iOS:
    • Windows Phones have little popular apps than Android/iOS due to the major failure in the past and didn't topped the world mobile market.
    • iOS/Android are more vulnerable/prone to malware and viruses due to being an open operating system (Android), and some apps can even store dangerous files to the internal storage without consent because it lacks a file manager by default (iOS). Windows Phones, on the other hand, is an ARM-based OS that doesn't run .exe files that could be potentially Trojans or viruses, and doesn't get infected easily since its source code and OS are more securely built and made...
    • Some NOKIA Lumia phones have an excellent and super high resolution camera (e.g. Lumia 1020) since NOKIA and Carl Zeiss teamed up together, even for the latest mobiles of NOKIA (manufactured by HMD, a company by former NOKIA workers. Yea, pretty much made by NOKIA).
    • iOS security features can be fooled and be controlled by scammers/hackers to lock out the owner, since Apple doesn't much care about it. Android, however, is also on security-wise and cannot be fooled easily, but it can be bypassed using Trojan apps. Windows Phones, well, is also secured, but not easily bypassed. Hackers can't just hack a Windows Phone since its not DOS based, and Trojan apps can't execute an illegal command because the OS itself is closed like iOS, and the OS itself is an ARM-based OS, which doesn't do x86 or x64 commands or actions or run .exe or .bat files.
    • So my best guess is, ....
When it comes to security, WP.
You can still install apps like installing APK files on WP by installing XAP or AppX files that are designed for the current version of the OS you have.
    You can install by:
    - PC -
Make sure the XAP or AppX/AppXBundle file is not from the Store database. Rather, if you want a paid game for free, search for any cracked versions of it. Then, if you have installed the WP 7/8/8.1/10 SDK (Lite), run Windows Device Registration Tool to Dev unlock it. And lastly, run Application Deployment Tool and browse the file to install (deploy) to your phone.
    - local app installer -
    _only works on W10M_
Go first to Settings>Security>For Developers>Select Developer Mode and press OK when a pop up shows up. Then, go to File Manager, and search for the file and tap on it. Tap on Install... Done!
That's all, thank you. I hope this helps, I think. 🌚 (Lenny)

Continuum and Dex are kind of pointless features. The phones aren't powerful enough to be desktop/laptop replacements, and they do not scale apps properly. It'd be much more economical and practical to just invest in a Windows tablet. Atom x5-Z8350 tablets go for peanuts these days and that's a relatively powerful X86 CPU. X86 means you get the full Windows experience, not the poorly supported Windows ARM version.

I am an owner of a Nokia Lumia 830 (1GB Ram). My experience with the phone when I started was terrible. It came with 8.1 and when I updated with windows 10 when I first started to use it was broken. I wondered why and reset the phone back to 8.1 trying to figure out the issue. After 3 days with the device being unusable I explored the internet and found a way to reinstall a clean build of windows 8.1 mobile on my phone. Turns out, i had a broken version of windows 8.1 build on my brand new nokia. After the clean install, I updated windows 10 cleanly on the device. Up to now, the phone is alive and kicking. I only use it as a secondary phone (for my 2nd sim) but I love the camera for it ever since I bought it. It might not have a lot of apps for it but I only use translator, office apps, edge, mail, messaging and calls on it. I don't really play on my phones/tablet anymore (be it android, Windows or IOS). It also lasts me 2 to 3 days since it is essentially just used as a phone, rarely used for the other apps. The integration with one drive is janky so I prefer to just email it as syncing to it takes too long. I've been using this phone since 2016 if memory serves me right.

I actually do; I've got the Win10 version of the Alcatel Idol 4S. It's a great phone and, for a while, Windows Phone gave me an environment where I could do everything I wanted to. I used to be a HUGE proponent of Google and anti-Microsoft as hell, but since Microsoft has started being more friendly to open source, and Google has been caught literally wardriving and capturing packets from private wifi networks with their Google Maps cars, tracking the location of phones even with "location" settings turned off and the phone's SIM card removed, and Apple seems to have lost the ability to innovate and produce phones that are worth the asking price, especially since the loss of Steve Jobs, my opinions have kind of turned around, so I use Windows Phone more out of a desire to patronize the company that I see as being the least evil of the big 3.
Cortana works great. I use her on my PC and it's cool that if I look up directions on my PC, I can send those directions straight to my phone as I walk out the door, although I feel like that's something you could probably do on Android with the Microsoft launcher and the Android version of Cortana.
The app gap is real though. At first I had all the apps I needed, but since purchasing this phone my bank has officially discontinued their Windows Mobile app, and while there are plenty of apps for Windows Phone in the store, there's also a lot that are missing. Losing the official USAA app is not a huge issue since it was literally just a pointer to their mobile web page, so I can just pin a shortcut to their mobile page to my start screen with Edge, but it's still an annoyance that you can no longer just go to the Microsoft Store and install an official app from them. Most of the apps I use on a normal day to day basis are still there though, Outlook, Excel, Facebook, Messenger, Camera, web browser, Pandora, etc. For a normal daily driver it's alright, but it's annoying that there's a lot of devices and software out there that I can't make use of because their apps are only available on iOS or Android.
I really think Windows mobile could have done great. Even in its dilapidated "maintenance only" state right now, it's "OK" for the majority of my daily needs, but it's annoying to see something, that was actually quite good in my opinion, get tossed aside, leaving us with only two real choices if we want a Smart Phone, and we need a good third option for people who, for one reason or another, don't want to give their money to Apple or Google. I'll probably keep this phone until it physically breaks down, or until Microsoft stops supporting their official apps on the platform. With the advent of these "always connected" ARM PCs running Windows 10 S, we might even see the reintroduction of some smart phones running a modded version of that operating system.

From the point of competition I'm sorry these phones died but windows never put the money in developing apps. You couldn't do your banking, at least i couldn't and many other things. They refused to let third party people have the code to create what could have been an Android killer. Android is a mess because gone allows phone makers to much freedom on changing the pure Android program. Only a few makers have genuine Android running.

I think Windows Phone updates are now tweaked to reduce the operational strength of the devices, such as poor battery response (like Apple did), decreased network reception, slow application connectivity, etc. They really want people to abandon the platform and move to iOS or Android. Sucks, because it was such a strong and dependable device and collection of services. I don't think I will ever feel another OS can be so dependable, and then, so betrayed by a company.

So last week I moved from iPhoneX to Pixel 3. Decided to use my Lumia950 for a day just to see how well I'd like it. As I've been using it for entertainment/weather/alarm clock via WiFi, it had all the Windows 10 updates running.
I still loved the tile interface and the gestures, fonts and other elements still work beautifully.
When I threw my SIM chip in, I was alerted to SIM updates - which I installed. I made and received phone calls which did great on the phone, wireless earbuds and automobile Bluetooth. The deal breaker was no matter what I did, I could not get my cellular data to kick in. So mail and everything else was restricted to WiFi.
Had not been on Android for over a decade. When I got my Pixel the next day, I immediately purchased the premium version of Launcher 10 which provides a full Windows Phone experience on Android - including Live Tiles. I have everything set up - but have ended up just using the native Pixel launcher - which I think is gorgeous given it's minimalistic Design.

Microsoft actually had introduced the windows mobile phone 2003 OS with a Motorola mobile phone. Yes 2003. I didn't had this model but I had the next one in 2004. The problem was that Microsoft was believing that people would be satisfied with what its operating system for smartphones was providing. Third party apps could be installed easily though. There were various sites with paid and free apps for early windows mobile phones. Very few people really trusted them with their credit card and the apps were mostly converted arcades games from 80's.
With iPhone people trusted their credit card with the App Store because Apple is a well known historic multibillion company instead of an unknown company with a website full of apps.
When Microsoft realized its mistake it was too late. I have the Nokia 1020 with its impressive 41MP lens and the Zeiss lens. Its photos are still impressive for a smartphone even today. The Windows phone 8.0 OS is very easy and I would say that I liked more than iPhone but the Windows Phone Store had only the basic apps. Nothing special. Nearly all are HTML based apps. Also it was nearly impossible to install pirated apps on Windows phones. Something very easy with android and jailbraked iPhones. This was important for youngsters.
With his return Steve Jobs couldn't challenge the dominant of Microsoft Windows OS of home computers but he succeeded initial with the iPod and afterwards with iPhone and iPad.
After iPhone 4 the mobiles phones have the power to replace in a great degree the desktops and laptops.

you can easily install pirated apps on Windows phone. all you need to do is download a .xap file and install it from an SD card only though unlike Android where you can install .apk files from the internal flash memory.

As I remember I think Windows phone killed itself, as then Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer scoffed at the original 2006 overpriced iPhone, and stuck with their enterprise focused, stylus oriented Windows CE / Windows Mobile phones. With the launched of iOS App Store in 2008, Apple had struck twice. Palm and Android were now in the game, and Microsoft still hasn't engaged their afterburners.

Comments from 3-4 months ago suggest this video was a teaser to draw people to your channel. To answer your question: "Can a Windows phone still be used in 2018?"
Answer: Of course it can. I have a budget (cheap as hell) $30 Windows 8 Phone on Lumia 430 hardware. Small and still used every day. Original battery has had no problems until it accidentally got caught in a rain storm about a year ago. I let it dry out and there hasn't been a problem with it since. Cellular service was supposedly cut off by T-Mobile but I found a work around in the settings by changing it to AT&T, rebooting, and fiddling with airplane mode, then rebooting once more and that enabled me to keep using T-Mobile but at only 2G speed for data. Second Gen is where it stayed after that.
I've changed "providers" once to Consumer Cellular a few months ago. My data is still stuck at 2G speed, however my monthly phone bill is now $20 for unlimited talking. Add $5.00 to include unlimited texting with 250 MBs for simple data use like checking the weather, emails (sluggish), or checking for work. Graphics rich sites are impossible at 2G. Oddly though when I travel to different states my 4G modem works just fine.

I swear it's 100% the lack of 3rd party apps, so frustrating that there was no committment from other companies to get into Windows it would be nice to have more competition on the market.

  • @liberator48
    @liberator48 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Of course it's going to take a couple of hours to update a phone that hasn't been used in 1½ years.
I've used Windows Phone ever since 2011 and still am to this day with my trusty Microsoft Lumia 640LTE from March 2015.
It was a mid-range phone when it released and still runs decent now 3½ years later. I use Twitter, Outlook, do banking and use manga apps among others. Even Netflix and Facebook work and most works as it has always, though it has always been a shortage of apps compared to other phone OS, but the essentials are there and then some. It still receives updates from time to time, mostly at night it will force itself off and show a cogwheel for 15 minutes or so before rebooting, so yes it is still supported and getting security updates.
At the end of the day, it's barely been any difference since Microsoft announced they won't be releasing any new Windows Phones. It's a shame that some app developers and other phone manufacturers take that as the OS is dead, because it's not really. The only apps that i've noticed disappearing are some banking apps, but there's really no reason for that other than there not being enough customers for it to be worth it to them to update their apps, what with those types of apps requiring additional security attention. Other than that, yes it is still a very valid option as a phone.
