    There are a lot of great video game soundtracks, but I truly believe Chrono Trigger to be the absolute #1 best video game soundtrack of all time.
    Also, just to name an example of how incredibly good the sound design is, their choice to just let the Ocean Palace theme play even during battles in that segment of the game shows their understanding of how music can convey emotion. The mood would be completely broken if the battle theme interrupted the Ocean Palace music during that part of the game.
    In my mind, this game consists of three distinct parts, each ending with an absolute whammy of a track. The first part is what leads up to the first fight with Magus, undoubtedly one of the most renowned boss fights in all of gaming! The 2nd part ends at the Ocean Palace, another incredibly iconic moment. And lastly, the fight with Lavos, culminating in one of the most incredible pieces of music ever conceived, aka To Faraway Times, which is probably the saddest track in the game. Truly makes you feel like a grand adventure has finally concluded. It makes me tear up every single time I hear that lil ending jingle towards the end of the song 😥

    • @LavosTheOneEyedTick
      @LavosTheOneEyedTick  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What a great analysis! Absolutely agreed. It’s like each part represents the climaxes of your journey as you approach what you realistically expect to be the final boss at that point - Magus with the focus on 600 AD that occupies the early game, the Ocean Palace marks the mid-game focus, and To Far Away Times being the true culmination after the game is over. They all build together to keep a story that feels intriguing and suspenseful on multiple levels.

      I played CT for the first time one or two years ago. I am 27.
      I LOVE SNES games, but Chrono Trigger is something very recent for me. And here I am, 100% nostalgic for that experience already. The music especially is absolutely magical. The proggy, whimsical, and epic proportions it goes to are pure bliss!
      This game's truly special, and fittingly, transcends time. Never have I played a game that has aged this well. I have 0 "actual" nostalgia for this game obviously, but it's still one of my fav RPGs of all time.

      I plsyed Chrono Trigger before a lot of the classic Final Fantasy fan favorites. I was always told to go check out FF6 or FF7 or FF10 cuz those are even better. Imagine the depths of my disappointment upon playing all of those games and feeling so underwhelmed and unsatisfied compared to how I felt after finishing Chrono Trigger.
      Gonna mini-rant here. I freaking can't stand hardcore FF fans. They always overhype the story and characters, have trouble dealing with or even imagining the possibility that everybody doesn't love their fav game for super good reasons, and they follow that stupid logic where you can't have a negative view on a game you haven't played, but you can sure have a positive view on a game you haven't played.

    • @4dojo

    • @psycholuigiman
      @psycholuigiman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@4dojo True that. Not saying one is objectively better than the other. Honestly, I'm just irritated with the fandom. Never had any good experiences with them. Always pressuring me to play their favorite games, then getting upset that I didn't like it all that much. Sometimes even going as far as insulting me for my taste. When they would talk about negative opinions of the FF games, they would frame them as misconceptions or misunderstandings of key mechanics and moments that make people think they don't like a specific game, rather than just accepting the possibility that maybe some folks have different preferences in games. It's like dealing with kids who think they know what you like better than you know what you like, sometimes. You'd think after dealing with it most of my adolescent and adult life I'd be less annoyed, yet here I am ranting and complaining about it in a random TH-cam comment section about Chrono Trigger of all things. Man, I got issues sometimes. Haha

    • @4dojo
      @4dojo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@psycholuigiman Honestly, every game has issues, and ff7 fans need to admit that. My favorite games of all time are probably Smash Bros and Breath of the Wild. Both of those games are full of glitches and things that could be improved, but I have no problem admitting that. And I absolutely love Chrono Trigger, but there are several things in that game that could have done better too. So for me the sign of a good game isn't that it's perfect, but that the things that it tries to do it does well. Chrono trigger has great music, great characters, an immersive universe, multiple endings, a compelling story, flashy movesets, character combos. It's not perfect, but it is amazing.

      Interesting to note that the destruction of Atlantis (or in this case Zeal) causes the global flood - and essentially ends the ice age.
      Then the survivors of Zeal/Atlantis co-mingle with humans on earth and it's the beginning of current modern-day civilization.
      This game was made in the mid-90s and they're following along with the ancient apocalypse theory that people are theorizing today. There's even a show about it currently on Netflix.

      It's because it's a perfect musical theme for what it's representing. Keep in mind how this fits into the larger Chrono Trigger story by this point: We've started at a present of modest advancement, been to a future post-apocalypse, went to 600 AD to a Medieval period of sorts, and even been at the time of cavemen, millions of years prior. At this point, we think we have a pretty solid bead on how the timeline progresses...
      And then you get to 12,000 BC, and you discover the kingdom of Zeal. More advanced than anything even humanity of the future has ever made, a place of wonder and miracles where literal dreams can be made real and actual _magic_ is widespread and accessible... and yet, the tune reminds you, on some subconscious level, how impossible this anachronistic civilization of mankind at its peak in Antiquity is, and that it cannot last.
      Corridors of Time is a memorial to a height that mankind reached, lost, and will never reach again.

    I wonder if we will ever get a modern remake of this game? Time is running out for them to do so!
    Im not even sure if i would prefer them to keep it 2D or do it in 3D. Am not sure if a game like this could really even work in 3D while still keeping the fernetic pacing... Perhaps maybe 2.5D would work best?

    I love how we love the idea of Zeal, because the "real" one ended up corrupted and destroyed.
    For a game about the passing of time, a timeless ideal is fitting.

      I am very sad at how AAA games now demand 1000 people to work on a game for YEARS. It is very impressive to see them come together still, but consider how many bangers Square and Enix put out on the SNES in just a few years. Now it takes them many, many years to make a single game.
      SNES was awesome. AAA was just a few dozen, super talented folks, who could all share 1 vision. Now you have a lotta people who I reckon are working on such miniscule things like a character's hair. and nothing else. Hard to put passion into such a small cog in such a huge machine I bet.
      This isn't "DAYS BEFORE BETTER NOW BAD", but it's why I've come to love Indie games! They ooze the same passion my childhood games did. A small bunch of folks sharing 1 cool game idea. It rules!

      @@SirMalorak the times are more demanding, and any lack of passion is more because of corporate officers and capitalism, or purely your biased imagination, depending on the game

    The music is perfect. But for the black omen, they knocked it out of the park.
    I always loved going to the furthest point in time, and attempting to enter the black omen, only to receive no response. Super eerie. But then slowly working my way backwards through time and conquering the black omen each time period until I get back to 12,0000 b.c.
    I wish the interactions with queen zeal would have changed depending on what time you were in, but oh well.
