Is clay slingshot ammo ammo? Is clay slingshot ammo powerful? Can I hunt with it?

  • Can I hunt with clay ammo? Is it accurate? Can I hunt with it?
So let's address the topic of power. Generally, clay is going to be roughly equivalent to 8mm or 5/16 steel. Clay ammo is never going to have the same power as it's similarly sized steel simply because it will not have the same mass. We always recommend hunting with as much power as you can shoot accurately, so clay would not be a recommended choice for hunting.
If you want to hunt, use steel or even lead ammo to deliver enough energy to the game to make a clean an ethical kill.
No let's address accuracy. Accuracy is in the eye of the shooter, in a significant sense. If accuracy to you means blasting a can, then by all means clay slingshot ammo is excellent. If you are interested in hitting much smaller targets such as spinners or even very small spinners, you are likely to be frustrated with clay. Clay slingshot ammo is never perfectly spherical. There is always some slight variation. That variation in size and shape will always translate into less accuracy than a perfectly spherical ammo.
And finally, as always, remember to match your bands to your ammo. A lighter ammo such as clay ammo is more susceptible to erratic accuracy when over banded. If your bands are too strong for your clay ammo you will be shocked at how much the shot might veer off in-flight.

8mm metal ball is around 2 grams , a mudball is around 0.9-1 gram (varied). The impact is very noticeable, metal ball hits much harder on a towel I use for ball stopper, it leaves a mark on the towel lol. Very satisfying shooting with metal ball, but since I play in a neighborhood, I use mudball, it is MUCH safer and very cheap. The impact is greater than 6mm bb bullets I used before. 1 kg containing around 1100 mudballs only cost US$2.9

I've used lead and steel of all sizes down to 8mm to take game such as wood ducks and rabbits. Have also taken a few bunnies with 10mm clay but you have to have it moving really really quick and shot placement is key. I wouldn't shoot at game with it unless I was certain it would kill it.

Is shooting round neodymium magnets at steel targets considered cheating?

Neodymium magnets tend to shatter, they're really brittle. I'm a bit curious if they'd actually work as target ammo

I heard clay ammo for pigeon hunting is good because it does, most of the time, kill the game and it doesn’t make you leave solid metal ammo all over the place in areas such as farms, lumber mills and places where pigeons are not welcome. How effective clay ammo is with pigeons, I don’t know other than a couple videos I’ve seen.

We do not recommend Clay Ammo for hunting as there is a high chance to only injure game as the ammo is so light.

20-25 mm clay balls with slow bands do the job. Too fast bands, and the flight become erratic, even at 10m. Linatex is my choice for those heavy clays ammos.

We wish Linatex were still what it used to be. 😥

Also it should be stated that in some countries clay ammo could be illegal to use on game.

Will it break the clay outer layer and do more? Or no?

I hit an orange on a tree from about 20ft and the clay left a hole in the peel and caused some juice to drip out.

You will need a target harder than an orange for the Clay Ammo to erupt into a dust cloud.

No,,, if you want to kill something properly use lead , or if you struggle with holdover issues use steel, but just get better and use lead .

I can't speak to accuracy, but I recently smacked a bird with a 3/8 steel and watched it fly away. Feathers flew, so I at least passed through feathers, but it was otherwise unhurt. I was shooting at an extreme upward angle at no more than 30 ft and using the recommended simple shot bands for 3/8. My theory is that the angle and lack of precise aiming caused my shot to dig an upward trench threw the feathers, but missed anything solid. I generally aimed at it, but didn't zero to something specific, like an eyeball. Given an eyeball is a guaranteed kill and requires accuracy, I'd rule out clay for that reason alone. Hitting the right spot is more important than how much power you can put into a target generally. You can deliver as much blunt force to my arm as you can, I'm still going to run away. Shoot me in the head with the same 3/8 steel and I'm not going anywhere.
