    Some extra thoughts from an old Motor Officer:
    1. Your counsel for having a Road Captain is a very good one. I would add that having an experienced rider cover the tail end of your group. If they are in sync with your Road Captain, they will change lanes first and secure the lane before the RC moves the rest of the group over.
    2. Bring a serious first aid kit, NOT one of the dinky ones. MC crashes often involve serious broken limbs, large areas of road rash (especially for those wearing t-shirts, shorts and flip flops. Modern military first aid kits have Israeli compression bandages and hemostatic powder or pads that can stop arterial bleeding. Add to that 1-2 SAM Splints.
    3. Be sure to bring extra replacement parts that you could need, especially items like light bulbs, clutch cable, etc. You don't want to waste time trying to find your needed part.
    4. Don't touch anyone's bike that isn't your own!
    5. Don't wear sunscreen above your eyes so you won't get burning eyes when you sweat at an inconvenient/critical time.
    6. If you are serious about riding, buy the book The Complete Motorcycle Nomad by Roger Lovin. It's from the 70's, but it's full of useful gems.

      Great advice, especially on the med kit. Cling film is useful for lightly dressing burns until professional medical assistance can be sought. Honey works quite well as a barrier between and can help healing rash/burns

    The day before I got back to Cali from my Sturgis trip last year started out at 34 degrees in Wyoming when I left the Hotel and 108 when I stopped in Mesquite Nevada. It was my buddies first long trip on his Harley he did not pack for the weather, learned a very cold lesson.

    I’ve been to Sturgis every year since 1990. Two things I would add. Plan your day, communicate your plans to riding buddies so there is no confusion as to who goes where and when. No confusion leads to a relaxed fun day and you don’t loose your buddies.
    Second, don’t let money ( or the lack of it) keep you from experiencing Sturgis. I don’t think I have ever spent more than $800 MAX. and an average of $600 for the 10 days I spend there. I spend more money on fuel than almost anything. There are cheap eats if you look for them. Ride sober and enjoy the ride.

      PS: food, fuel and sleeping location is the essentials, all else is luxuries , plan wisely for essentials and you can add extras as you can afford.

    TIP for lighter Travel Bring more money or credit cards, last 2 times i went to sturgis from the east coast i had 1 change of clothes rain gear and other have to haves, when i got to rapid city i'd hit walmart buy what i need for the 10 days, and then at the end of the week hit a UPS and ship what i bought home, and rode home light

    Sturgis is a blast, and I love going. My wife said that it was our best vacation together ever. I got lucky because I worked for Hilton and the Home 2 in Rapid left their employee rates on so I had $35 a night hotel rooms for the week. I would think that ignoring the tourist traps would be something to avoid during Sturgis, reptile gardens and the other roadside attractions. Also don't get over ambitious with what you want to do. The first day over in 2018 we left Billings, MT at 7:30 am and got to Rapid City at around noon. We had lunch, and then had planned to go to the Full Throttle for the Steel Panther concert. We rolled up to the Throttle at 4:45 to beat the cover charge, it was about 95 degrees out and we had to wait until about 9:30, 10:00pm for the concert. There is only so much to do at the Throttle that doesn't involve a cold beverage. The concert finally ended about 12:30 am, and I'm faced with a 30 mile ride back to Rapid City. I cut myself off beer at 10pm but I had left my jacket back at the hotel. The temp is down to about 55 degrees riding back at 1am. We got back to the hotel and into bed at 2:30 am. Being up 20 hours straight on the first day of the trip and planning to go to the chip the next day to see Kid Rock was a no go. Plan your time well and don't blow your load on the first day.

    Weather wise as someone who Grew up in Rapid City (Stevens HS Class of 77) look to the West, 98% of all storms come from the west and travel east , and if you are east of the Hills you can see them coming, and if the clouds are turning dark, decide what you're going to do when the storm hits, me i look for a truck stop.

    You had me laughing with the clothing part at the end. I tell my buddies when they go on long multi-state motorcycle trips just bring enough socks and underwear for the trip. You can recycle a few pairs of jeans and shirts but as long as you have fresh socks and underwear each day you feel almost clean end and what you're wearing is going to be a new outfit to the people at the next stop anyway.

    1993 we were leaving Sturgis for home and headed west down 90 when the wind came up and the clouds blew in. Kept riding towards it until the hail started. Decided to turn back as all our leathers were tied to the bike. Crossed the median and the wind laid the bike right over! Got it stood up and raced back to Sturgis under torrential rain and golf ball sized hail. Pulled into a gas station under the awning and about 2 minutes later it blew over. We were soaked and bruised. If we had kept going west we would have rode through it in a couple of minutes but we rode under it all the way back to Sturgis. We usually take about $1500 cash and use the credit card for fuel. But we are only 500 miles away

    Intersection Stops:
    YES, every intersection stop is bare minimum of both feet on the street > count to 3 and roll to the next block.
    I was pulled over after doing this for 4 blocks straight and on the 5th stop, I missed the two feet step and sure as shit, pulled over!
    Smart ass cop asked me “if there was stop lights where I came from?”....I told him yes, but after 4 stops of flashing stoplights hypnotizing me, I missed my 3 second count on number 5! He laughed, ran my license and gave me warning 🙄
    I wasn’t drunk or impaired, even though I just downed two shots a group bought for me 10 minutes before I left 😂
    I get it, without strict traffic rules & consequences, many of bikers would crash & burn

      You are technically supposed to fully stop with 1 foot on the ground and 1 foot on your foot brake, Ive seen people get pulled over for putting both feet down in the ground

    My first and only so far was the 78th Sturgis. My wife and some friends from Oklahoma road to Milwaukee an toured the museum then to Sturgis. Was a little over 4000 miles on the bike and was the best trip. We toured all the well known locations and then road the rest of the trip. We did a hotel trip when we felt like stopping for the night. It was close to your $6000 estimate. 1 thing to add if ur like my wife there’s a T-shirt from every shop in n our closet. Ups is a wonderful thing when you obviously over purchased T-shirts. Send the wad home and spend the extra $100 so you don’t have to find extra room. When you pack and ride needles, Custer black hills etc the less weight you have to carry the more fun your ride is. Man I love your channel!!!

      Some of the campgrounds have laundry services. We stayed one year at Glencoe. They had a one day turnaround laundry service. Can't remember the exact price, but it was reasonable. We were tent camping at the time. Dropped our dirty laundry off in the evening. Spent the next day riding and picked up our clean laundry that evening after finishing our riding for the day.

    Temperatures and elevations. Reminds me of a run from Joshua Tree through Big Bear, down to Palm Springs, when I was 6, and my parents rode with the Sons of None.
    92 degrees at 900 hours, leaving Twenty Nine Palms. Hit the hills going into Big Bear, and half way up the mountain, it dropped down to 50, with fog and a light mist. We were in Jean's, t shorts, denim vests, and didn't pack the jackets. Rode about 12 miles, and spotted a Sears, and ended up buying hoodies, and rain coats.
    The number of us on that run we ran into there, poker run, they could have set up for another ard draw stop. Keep in mind this was 1982 or 83, so the only way you knew what was going on up the mountain was if the LA stations mentioned it. And all we had was a pair of XS 650 Specials, no bags.
    They bought two sets the next weekend. Still have mom's old set.
    So, if you are going to encounter a drastic change in elevation, make sure you have gear with, be sure you won't enjoy those twisty mountain roads, shivering and soaked. And the last time and place you want to buy gear is when you,and a few dozen others, all need it at the same time, in a one shop town.

    Appreciate your advice on many topics. Been riding off and on since 1970. Had wreck with two deer, HUGE telephone poll and multi wire fence and totaled '09 Electra Glide Classic. Road rash and a cracked punkin' later I have a type of vertigo that has canceled my two wheel life. I do have plans for a trike but power it with a '38 Flathead Ford V8. Maybe see ya' on the blacktop.

    I rode from Eastern PA on my Road King alone to 77th Sturgis. At the hotel in LeClaire IA I was told that Antique Archaeology from American Pickers was just a mile down the road. So I rode there and crashed right in front of the place, on camera. A man in a Jeep asked if I had a problem. I told him "No, I always park it like this".

    Great video. Went last year and the rain sucked. I planned for really hot. No rain gear and built a mister system for the bike. Will make a video on it later in the summer. The 2 am thing with the bikes. If you got drunk and can`t find anyone to get your bike off main street it might be cheaper to get the toe fee rather than a DUI.

    Sad:-My uncle got t boned on a Beezer A10 sidecar combo by a truck. No chance.
    Funny:- 7 of us on a GPZ 1100 (fk knows how), travelling back from having a beer at our local pub, two miles with zero problem (other than my wellies melting a bit on the pipes), we stopped momentarily as we turned into our farm track. The bike fell on top of us all, 10 minutes of rolling around in stitches in the mud and cow shit trying to get this bloody heavy bike off us.

    Last time I was in Sturgis was 2008 where my husband and I got married 08-08-08. We rode from Maryland to Sturgis and shipped the wedding gown and tux. We had a blast since that was our first time there. Unfortunately, I lost my husband in 2020, BUT we had planned on going to Sturgis for our 15th anniversary in 2023 and I'm doing it. I've already started planning for the trip, plan on staying at The Chip, my son and his wife are riding with me and I've been picking up people along the way. I plan on having a blast. Now I'm going to give you my most embarrassing riding story. About a month after I first met my husband, way back in the dark ages lol, I invited him to go for a ride with me in the West Virginia mountains. At that time I had a 1971 900 Sportster and had been just riding around my town getting myself used to riding again, hadn't been riding in about 10 years. Anyway, he comes over, we get ready, I'm leading and we get to a stop sign, stopped and I was supposed to take a right turn... the MIND WENT BLANK... I forgot how to hand a right, smh, went straight across the road and got taken out by a telephone guide wire... broke my collar bone, dislocated my right shoulder, but when the wire took me off my bike I landed on my right shoulder and popped it back in place. I was soooo pissed and embarrassed. Scared the hell out of my husband and he told me I wasn't allowed to ride until I took the riding classes at Harley lol. He bought me the lessons as a gift and it was one of the best gifts he gave me. So the moral of the story is, if you haven't ridden in a looong while... take the damn lessons, it'll save your ass.

    It's common to feel tired or have a mild headache for about the first 24 hours because of the elevation. Most people feel fine within a day. Stay hydrated. Don't get overheated. Don't put on a huge amount of miles on a ride if you're not used to it. People who have the most trouble are the ones who get to town and party hard their first night. They have a hangover that lasts for days. I've even seen people head home early because they're so miserable. So take it easy the first 24 hours you're there. Be safe everyone!

We were going around a corner and a truck with a horse trailer was going the other way, I got over a bit to miss the trailer, that crossed the yellow line, and ended up going into a corner too fast. We went off the road onto a gravel drive way, The front tire dropped off the end and ejected myself and I off the bike. I landed 87 feet from the edge of the driveway, my wife ended up 6 foot further. The bike flipped over twice and landed on us. It was leap day 2020, the ditch we landed in was more than 4 foot deep and really soppy muddy. My legs ended up under the back tires and my wife’s ankle was under the front one. She broke her wrist and ankle and I had “deep tissue” injuries. But we basically walked away. Totaled the bike but the good lord was looking after us that day.

    Just found your TH-cam channel. Absolutely love the attitude, great advise tempered with humility, superb. If you ever want to see weather come over here to Wales. Raining in Cardiff, sleeting in Pontypridd, blizzards in the Brecon Beacons. No more than fifty miles apart 😁 Its not always like that, but always interesting.

    First time in strgus on bike true you need a captain for road trips. This year most of my buds are from so cal I'm from Oregon and use to mountains . How would you explain to them they need to listen about how to ride in mountains ,you know looking for animals, looking though turns , how to turn brake and stay out of gravel .
    We are staying at the air force base 30 minutes away is this a good idea. Let me know what you think .

I truly enjoy being around other bikers, but cringe when several people want to "ride together to destination X" . All of the stops, the "I forgot to gas up", I think I heard something on my bike,,, totally takes away the fun of the ride. Keep up the videos!

      RV or camping I really like hog heaven There isn't as much debauchery there that goes on in Glencoe or the chip or full throttle we always got up early in the morning and got out of the campground in the direction that we wanted to ride that day and normally we're ahead of the curve as far as traffic goes and we trailer out there we don't have anything to prove as far as our riding cred we're old guys we've been there done that way back in the days when we didn't have windshields thank goodness we do now.

    It's a lot cheaper if you stay at family owned campgrounds and then just buy tickets for the shows you want to go see! Also I usually don't carry a rain gear cuz even if it does storm or hail it heats right back up after the storm, most storms don't last that long. Also you can go to national chain restaurants that don't raise their prices during the rally! I went down for a week and took $1,000 spending money and still had little cash left when I came home. It all depends how much partying and eating you want to do it can be done a lot cheaper if you plan ahead!

    First of all, I’m glad we don’t live next door to each other...we would be in sooo much trouble with our wives...haha! You have a great thing going. Now the question. You mentioned hail and I’ve been concerned about the big golf ball sized hail storm that comes through every couple years. I realize that if your on the road, there’s not much you can do but what do people do in camp to protect their bikes? Heavy duty easy-up? Does your RV awning provide protection or does it get thrashed also? Thanks and again, great videos!

    • @ProfessionalMonkey
      @ProfessionalMonkey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would be a troublesome neighbor. Yeah, there just not much you can do. People look for trees to minimize it but really people put their bikes in their trailers. Awnings wouldn’t stand up. You’re just a bit screwed if I’m honest!!!

    • @codytoothman7581
      @codytoothman7581 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was there last year and there was some baseball size hail that somehow didn't touch my bike. But there were some that had huge holes in the fairings and saddlebags from it. And huge dents in the tank and fenders.

    • @buckykatt9638
      @buckykatt9638 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Was at Elk Creek Campground, tent camping. We got hit by golf ball size hail. Only think we could do was cover the bikes in our leathers and use our bodies for protection. On RV awnings....don't leave it rolled out during a storm. And don't leave it rolled out UNATTENDED. If high winds hit while you're gone, you'll have a trashed RV awning. If you have an RV garage..roll 'em in. If not, get your self something like a Kelty Shademaker. Stake it down GOOD. Use guylines as well. You can park your bikes under it and achieve a level of protection from the hail.

    • @sur2baja
      @sur2baja 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@buckykatt9638 Everything you say makes sense. From the most practical side, I’m leaning towards a shade tent with the most heavy duty top material I can find since large hail has a lot of force behind it. I’m being realistic though and realize I can only do what I can do…haha!

    • @buckykatt9638
      @buckykatt9638 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sur2baja we use a Kelty sunshade that has pretty thick nylon. We can park both the ultra glide and road king under it. It’s worked fairly well, it also keeps the rain, dew, etc from getting on the seats. The important thing is making sure you get quality stakes and you guyline it at every corner. Can’t tell you how many people I’ve seen who have had their tents or sunshades go blowing across the campground because they didn’t secure it down properly.
