Is Zionism compatible with democracy? | Head to Head

  • The ideology of Zionism, which calls for the establishment of a Jewish state, has dictated Israeli politics for decades.
But is it compatible with a democratic Israel? And can a state exclusively for Jews be a genuine democracy?
Palestinians argue that Zionism has become a byword for racism and colonial expansion.
In this episode, Mehdi Hasan challenges Shlomo Ben Ami , the former Israeli foreign minister and avowed liberal Zionist, on the challenges of Zionism and the failures of the Israeli peace camp.
Also joining the discussion are: Avi Shlaim, a renowned new historian and emeritus professor of international relations at the University of Oxford; Paul Charney, the chairman of the Zionist Federation; and Diana Buttu, a Palestinian lawyer and legal advisor to the Palestine Liberation Organisation.

Palestine should trace their history. Did they just drop from heaven? Israel history can be googled and interact with. I see them as migrating people who settled in the land of Israel after the series of wars that captured the kings of Judah and Israel and let the Jews into Exile. The people just returned to their homeland. They should just find a way to live happily instead of yearly bloodshed and poisoning of the younger generations mind. In times in memorial , people have been fighting wars and displacing people and taking territories. Russia hearnes crimea in n recent year, Palestine had nothing to say and the Arab world kept quiet. China is forcing himself on smaller territories and the world has not come to an end. Until Palestine becomes responsible and reasonable not allowing sentiment and religion to becloud their minds, peace and prosperity is available to them. I am just an objective observer.

”This war is about more than our daily bread, our living space, and our peace. More than ever before we have to defend our most valuable possessions, the things that make life worth living, without which human life is meaningless...”, H.Goebbels said in 1943.
Between 1921 and 1925 Adolf Hitler developed the belief that Germany required Lebensraum ('living space') in order to survive. Only 40 years later, Jews say that Israel need vital space for security reasons. Expansive form of Zionism is like “Lebensraum” , the vital space doctrine of nazism. If we change the particular words ”germans” and ”East” with ”Jews” and ”The ancestral land”, or with ”jews safe homeland” we have the similar doctrine. This is a sad irony.

@@megaplasma1942 That’s not true. The only thing you get right is that it’s true that you get some Jewish dna in Palestinian populations, but this is certainly not the majority of it. Either way, they are related to Jews genetically, just like any other Arab population. And some consider Jews their cousins.
Gentetic studies on Jews: “For populations of the Jewish diaspora, the genetic composition of Ashkenazi, Sephardi, and Mizrahi Jewish populations show significant amounts of shared Middle Eastern ancestry.[1][2][3] According to Behar and colleagues (2010), this is "consistent with a historical formulation of the Jewish people as descending from ancient Hebrew and Israelites of the Levant" and "the dispersion of the people of ancient Israel throughout the Old World".[4][5]”
Ashkenazi Jews are the light-skinned Jews you are referring to. You may be confused for their light skin and consider them european, but this is not an exclusively European trait (Asians, for example, are not caucasians, and yet have light-skin) and genetic studies confirm that they are much more related to other Jewish populations and even Arabs than to Europeans.

      2. Oh, here I definitely agree with you. Woody Allen's jokes are great.
      3. "should be the beacon to satisfy the Jewish problem" - I thank you very much for advising the Jewish people in this way. But unfortunately, Professor, unfortunately we are forced to reject your proposal. like WTF - and I apologize for being rude - in what right are you demanding from a people to give up its own state? For us, the Jews, our identity and our culture are much more than Woody Allen's jokes. I will dare to add that jokes haven't helped us so much throughout history
      4. "If every stateless defeated people on earth were granted a homeland, the world would not exist as it is;" - In this case, the territorial integrity of the United States - or of any other country justifies it. If Palestine was a sovereign independent state in the 19th and 20th centuries then probably a Jewish state within this sovereign area was not such a good idea. But that is not what it was, Erets Yisrael/Palestine was a remote area within the Ottoman Empire. Not exactly an independent state - a sovereign state who wants to break away from it. I'm sure we would both support the Akaka bill if it came up before the United States became sovereign or conquered Hawaii. Today, they are already in a sovereign state, and breaking away from it is impossible. This is also the reason why Catalonia will not become independent - at least not in the visible medium. But we should support their efforts for some form of autonomy.
      5. "The same should have happened to the Jews." - Your advice to my people and its dignity is in place, but I do not want my people, my civilization, my culture to be "dilute". Sorry but I'm just not interested in that.
      - I'm very, very happy to see in 2022 still people who hold imperialist views. I thought there were no more.
But I'm even happier that you and your attitudes will disappear - at worst - in another 50 years. And the Jewish people, culture, and state will continue to prosper.
      -Hope you understood
      -Have a nice day

If Theodore Herzi has founded his theory of the state of Israel from the original Torah of Prophet Moses, which is to live and let live like the muslim arabs did with the Jews in the middle ages by welcoming them and providing safety from the persecutions of the Crusades, then surely Israel could live peacefully live with their Arab cousins today. But they rebelled against their own Prophets and chose transgression. There is no term ZIONISM in the Torah nor anything to suggest this agenda.

I wish the Jewish liberal didn’t slur his speech. Define Liberal. Aristotle said, Liberals like to spend money to help others as opposed to cold hearted and tight fisted.
As for Nazis taking over Poland they may have been liberal Nazis. And alleging that another’s wrongdoing makes his wrongdoing right is preposterous. Calling the Jewish state an anomaly (A deviation of what is normal, standard or expected) seems correct.

Zionism holds the same basic racist views as Nazism, and have been more successful since the US also holds those views.

Not quite. Nazi's based their ideology on the idea of genetic superiority of a people, while Jews base their ideology on the idea of religious superiority of a people.

@@0rganopleno actually upure wrong. I've studied under 3 rabbis and jews consider Jewishness to be a RACIAL thing. You are born a jew by a jewish mother. You can be an instant ke or a secular jew or an atheist jew, but you're still a jew. And the real ironic thing is that istael, because bring s jew is a racial thing, is THE most DNA tested nation. And DNA shows 70% of the Israeli jews are Europeans, not middle east, so NONE of their ancestors EVER lived in the middle east anywhere! The only time Jews were evrr discriminated against was by the Christians in europe in the middle ages and by the nazis in ww2 . They act like everywhere they go they've always been persecuted by the world. Its simply not true.

We need to remember that Zionism, by definition, is about establishing and preserving a Jewish state. Ask yourself, what if the US decided we were going to be a White Christian state (depending on whether you want to define Judaism as an ethnicity or religion).
Would any liberal call a "White Christian" state a democracy? And frankly, would the Jews in America call such a state a democracy? Of course they wouldn't. And I would be right with them on that.
An ethnostate CANNOT be a democracy. In a democracy, everyone must be equal before the law. You cannot have 5 million people in your country who have no rights. And let's be honest--Israel has made the West Bank part of Israel. All of the inhabitants are now residents--but those who are not Jewish do not get to be citizens--they have no rights. For those people, Israel is not a democracy--it is a tyranny.
