@@thadirtyabbott33 I’ve owned to SP-1200 and it’s best used as strictly a controller for the S950 or the Ensoniq ASR-10 IMO. I hated the limited sample time and those weak ass filters on each channel. The MPC totally shits on it in sound quality, features and functionality. Not knocking those who love the SP but I just couldn’t wrap my mind around why it was considered by some on par or better than the 3K and the 60 or 60II back then when it’s obviously not but to each it’s own 🤷🏾‍♂️

What the sp brings to the table the MPC's don't. And vise versa that's the beauty.
It's like dating and appreciating women and all their differences before you settle with one. If you ever....
Not to hijack the thread but to me.... The lack of sampling time ''forces you to be calculated and creative with your choices of technic, approach and samples.
Now people have computers and samplers where you can sample a whole album +. And the music hasn't gotten better because of that.
I put it to you like this...

Nah, Teddy Riley already had the daddy for the mpc3000 which was the MPC 60. Teddy didn't skimp on new equipment. He was the first producer in New York State to score the MPC60. 90% of his hits came from it. He would also be able to afford many MPC3000s when it came out. Maybe he borrowed QTIPs Machine when he didn't have his on him, but it is hard to see him throwing away his old MPC60. It swings even better than the 3000 and bangs even more with 12 bit grit. Teddy had an SP12 or 12000 I believe. I have both the 3000 and the 60, but I prefer the mpc60 with the new MPC3000 software upgrade for hard swinging dirty crusty hip hip. .The MPC 3000 itself still does my the bulk of my work though. It is better for long samples , clarity and deep basses with it's filter. The mpc60 can still sound clean depending on what and how you sample. . Both great machines.

Don’t forget the legendary rack mount entries, like the S950, S2800 and the EMU Emax. Of course they didn’t have the coveted sequencer but what an amazing combo with the 3000 sequencer. Definitely my favorite of all the series.

I still love the 4,000, you can do anything on a 4000 especially as good as it's timing is. You can turn the timing off on the 4000 and it's exactly what you play in it. Not to mention if you go into its inputs digitally, you can use any converter as it's front end.. so theoretically, it can sound like whatever you put in it also.. that makes it a beast.

Roger Linn lifted the curtain on his secret groove sauce a little while back:
"My implementation of swing has always been very simple: I merely delay
the second 16th note within each 8th note. In other words, I delay all
    the even-numbered 16th notes within the beat (2, 4, 6, 8, etc.) In my
products I describe the swing amount in terms of the ratio of time
duration between the first and second 16th notes within each 8th note.
For example, 50% is no swing, meaning that both 16th notes within each
8th note are given equal timing. And 66% means perfect
swing, meaning that the first 16th note of each pair gets 2/3 of the
time, and the second 16th note gets 1/3, so the second 16th note falls
on a perfect 8th note triplet. The fun comes in the in-between settings.
For example, a 90 BPM swing groove will feel at 62% than
at a perfect swing setting of 66%. And for straight 16th-note beats (no
swing), a swing setting of 54% will loosen up the feel without it
sounding like swing. Between 50% and around 70% are lots of wonderful
little settings that, for a particular beat and tempo, can change a
rigid beat into something that . "

The 3k timing was just different. Don’t believe the “myth” lie. What people don’t realize is that “swing” is not just about timing but also velocity. Roger did something in that unit…. It’s subtle but noticeable. You could turn the swing off and loop a straight Billie Jean drum intro groove and the magic still happens. It’s the 3k. Everybody knew this. Radio ready out the box.

I owned the Akai MPC 3000 LE. It had a sturdy built and swallow menus. It also had a slightly darker sound for a 16 bit sampler. However it also lacked a lot of features like time stretch pitch shift and wave editing. I just don’t see why people are paying $6000 for 30 year old technology.
Only reason I think people are paying so much for these old pieces of gear is because of famous producer used them and for some reason they think they can be like J dilla or whoever.
Can could never be like anybody but yourself and buying the same gear as your favorite producer won’t change that.
Older gear is the more tedious to use and new gear has better workflow.

I started out making beats with a non-sampling Akai product, the XR20 around when it came out. More of a groovebox but it got me into an MPCish workflow. Later down the line I got an MPC1000 with JJOS, and then went to the MPC Live eventually.

Dilla didn't turn quantize off. That's one of the biggest myths thats hurt young producers who think that's the trick to good drums. Before they even know how to make good drums with quantize.
Dilla tweaked the swing settings and would put some snares a grid point off but you can tell his beats are quantized even when snares were off

@Dyreck Productions. The MPC 3000 is classic and in time it was the best music/midi production groove box. But I truly believe with any MPC you can do the same thing you can do with 3000. You can make any MPC sound warm and grimey it what you put in it. With that said in my opinion I think the MPC X is the best MPC created. It has tons of features and chopping a sample is so easy with a few different ways of chopping. Also you can mix and master right in the MPC. You can use as a standalone or if you daw person you can hook it up to a PC. So and what happened was with mpc 3000 is time's changed and it's still over priced on Ebay

Can you address specifically the MPC3000LE that came out in 2000? There has always been a big rumor in the MPC community that AKAI made only 2000 international units for the year of 2000. AKAI made commemorative number plates for each MPC3000LE supposedly numbered #0001 - #2000. I personally haven’t seen any LE’s numbered higher than 1400. Dilla’s MPC3000LE was #0449 and I have #0538.

The 4K, 3K, 2000XL and MPC X. In that order were the best MPC’s I’ve ever used. The 4K and the X are the best of the lot when it comes to features for me. As far as non-MPC’s it’s the Ensoniq ASR-10 and the EPS-16+. The dopest midi combinations for me was when I had the EMU SP-1200 controlling the ASR-10, the SP-1200 controlling the Akai S950 and the MPC 2000xl controlling the ASR-10. I’ve been blessed to have sold and bought tons of setups in my lifetime. I currently own a 4K, a MPC X and an Ensoniq ASR-10. I use them all separately.

I'm going to look into this very soon but as of right now: Don't tha SP1200 do tha same thing, if not more ? Again, I am gong to look into this but once you put tha sounds into either one of these machines, it's tha buttons and faders that make all of tha magic happen ( AFTER ) you run sounds through these machines, right.
Plus I always wondered why I never really heard a kick and a snare by itself, it was stolen / sampled, lol.
