  • Medford Fighter Flipper long term review
    Now today I review a knife that I loved during the honeymoon period but how well does it really hold up after a year of use?
    If you are interested in seeing this knife put through some genuine hell then please check out my buddy Dirk Wernings torture test video linked below.

    To open this blade you have to flick the blade out while throwing it out. Or you can use the blood Groove on the blade to open it. I got one works good for me.

      Yeah I know brother, my point is you shouldn’t have to use wrist in order to deploy a flipper knife, that’s just a poor design.

    Thank you Red. I've been curious about Medfords for a long time, just didn't like their designs, especially the handles of many models.
    I was so close to popping on this blade to finally understand the hype, since I truly liked this design. You talked me out of it, had mine had some of these issues I would have been furious at a 750-1000 dollar price point (depending on your options).

      Yeah that is definitely a concern with a Medford knife, also the propriety hardware is a pain in the ass because they don’t include the tool.

      @@RedwolfEDC Number 14 spanner bit for a screwdriver is what fits that 6 gun pivot that he uses, same thing would also work with some of his earlier pivots of the same style. Ive only been able to find this number 14 spanner on amazon but im sure other online websites have it. I also own the number 6 and 8 spanner bits and just messing with them tonight found out that they will also unscrew the pivot as you insert them into two of the holes one beside the other whereas with the number 14 spanner it will insert into one hole and the hole opposite across from it.

    I don't understand people's infatuation with Medford. I've yet to meet someone who hasn't had, what'd I'd consider, a deal breaker. Especially at the prices they demand. The high end folder market is too crowded to settle on what's essentially an ornament at the end of the day.

    • @RedwolfEDC
      @RedwolfEDC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ty I definitely like some of this stuff but I definitely agree with you that they all have problems. Also the prices he charges are genuinely insane but people still buy them so he keeps selling them at that price point.
      Personally I only buy them from the secondary market.

    • @Ty91681
      @Ty91681 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RedwolfEDC it would be insane to NOT use the secondary market when shopping Medford. Hell, I try the secondary market first on almost every knife I purchase. My brother finally broke down and bought a praetorian this spring. It has major lock stick. Enough lock stick he's seriously considering sending to Medford for service as of last week. To each their own I suppose, I just have a hard time supporting someone like Greg Medford. It seems like a lot of these US makers are stubborn when it comes to potential product improvements on subsequent generations of models that have issues. I'll stop ranting now. Lol.

    OMG!
    I gotta say Medford, just because I don’t actually have “Medford Money” as a public school teacher, was kinda viewed as a grail knife. Probably because the complete aesthetics and perception of what Medford offered in their designs. That being said , I had to stop following Medford because listening to Greg Medford was the equivalent to scratching nails on the chalkboard (for those old enough to actually remember chalkboards). When he became more about discussing his personal politics than discussing his craft it was a hard pass for me. Seeing your review really opened my eyes, and being that a big purchase for a high-end knife may be few and far between, I can tell you what I won’t be spending my money on. Thank you for an honest review and keep doing what you’re doing.

      It’s either not at all an honest review or quality control on the specific knife in this video was terrible, I have a fighter flipper and 15 other high end knives, but this thing screams “worth the money” more than anything I’ve ever purchased, the only 2 things I can say are true in this video are the comment about the early lock up (and lock up is so easy to fix yourself without tools, mine is perfect now), ergos are not the best but I expected that when buying a folding knife that got its design from an iconic fixed blade.
      This knife is totally awesome (I have 3v version) cuts paper great, cuts cardboard great, cuts wire great, and the action is amazingly smooth, I don’t know of a single 10 Oz knife that successfully flips open when you hold it straight up in the air, if you hold it normally it flips great! Like I said...this guy may have got a lemon

    • @RedwolfEDC
      @RedwolfEDC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have handled more then one and my opinion on the action is echoed throughout the majority of the community.
      As far as the edge I mentioned in the video that it was fine from the factory and that I had used the knife until it was dull.
      As far as the weight being any issue I have quite a few heavy weight knives that flip open reliably including one monster that ways just under a pound as well as a ODKW that sports a 5.5 inch blade and still deploys with ease.
      Everything else you mentioned is subjective so I honestly cannot say one way or the other because it’s more about personal preference.

    Appreciate the candid review. I was seriously contemplating one of these, but after watching your review and a few others and considering price vs ergonomics vs FED (flipper erectile dysfunction), I'm gonna pass. I do like Medford knife designs, but form should follow function, especially at this price point. Hopefully they will improve it. Looks like this list of fixes at a minimum should be: 1) Improve the action, perhaps bearings 2) Modify shape to protect the lock face 3) Improve the frame lock performance 4) Chamfering to improve ergonomics

      So while I cannot attest to any type of improved quality control on the fighter flipper because I have not purchased another one since. I have the same color scheme as you bronze with black pvd hardware and clip except the bronze came out to a more dark bronze green. You never mentioned the fact that greg's intention was to not flip it open to lock position and it even states in his warranty not to. You flick it open just enough to expose the thumb groove (as you did 200 times) to fully deploy it like his praetorian. I'd also have to disagree with you on ergos it feels great in my hands.

    • @RedwolfEDC
      @RedwolfEDC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a cope out from a maker who just doesn’t want to put the effort in to make a piece with quality action, which to be fair is the same thing he has been doing damn near from the get go. A “flipper” is a knife that is deployed using the “flipper” tab and nothing else and he literally put the word “flipper” in the name.
      As far as the ergos, well ergonomics are entirely subjective to be clear, but i think it feels good in hand until you actually put it to work and use a real firm grip and then the flat slabs bite into your hands.
      But this is all just my opinion brother and you are one hundred percent entitled to disagree with me.
      I still love your live regardless brother, take care.

    • @AzureSku11
      @AzureSku11 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RedwolfEDC Chris reeves knives has a similar warranty and you're not supposed to flip them open either. The thumb stud is meant for deployment but people still do it anyways. I'm sure if you wanted you could void the warranty, take it apart and polish the washers if you want it to flick open.

    • @RedwolfEDC
      @RedwolfEDC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AzureSku11 CRK aren’t supposed to flick but they very easily do because they are well made knives, you literally just proved my point. A quality piece will have quality action and this one does not.
      Also Medford stopped voiding warranties for disassembly a few years ago. But why would I spend my time and money to fix something that should have been fixed at the factory when my 816.42 dollar knife (after tax) was being built?

    • @AzureSku11
      @AzureSku11 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RedwolfEDC Typically the action varies slightly from each person that checks every CRK but don't ever become "drop-shut" out of the box and they do not sand the bearings down enough to give perfect action you have to do that yourself or loosen it up with use so saying "that's how it should be" isn't true. I've read on all warranties including the warranty for the USMC fighter flipper I received in August that it will be voided if you dissemble it not sure where you're getting that. Ask any Medford owner they aren't known for their drop shut action but since the blades are usually heavy enough they fall on their own. A 700$ CRK bearing still needs to be sanded down to give it an effortless drop shut action. So your argument doesn't reflect the high end knife maker's he's competing with.

    • @RedwolfEDC
      @RedwolfEDC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AzureSku11 I got that from Greg himself on one of his many 2 hour long live streams. Also I have owned 4 sebenzas 21’s, 7 Umnumzaans (I keep selling them for something new and then I buy another one a month later) and 1 Sebenza 31 and the action of them all have been stellar after a few days break in period (The Medford still has terrible action over a year later.)
