As a retired cop who has lost many friends, as a human that has lost many family members...I have to say, in my opinion, this scene is the best scene in any series ever...really powerful.

This scene is so emotional for me. I lost a co-worker who was killed in the line of duty in 1997 and couldn't sleep for two weeks until he appeared to me in a dream. He told me he'd always be around if he was needed. I've been comforted by that thought for nearly 24 years.

      Something similar happened to me.
Lost my dad in 2021 after a long battle with illness, 66 years old.
Hardest I've ever been hit so far, the rug had been pulled from under my feet.
I was arranging his funeral and after it was all planned, I slept and I dreamt of meeting him in his old apartment.
He sat in front of me and said: "Mike. Don't worry, I'm all good." And he grew healthier infront of me, and eventually got up unassisted(he used to have a walker to the end).
I'm not a religious man, but I am a spiritual one.
And that dream helped me alot.

What's great about this scene is that it allows Andy Sipowicz to finally say goodbye to the best partner he ever had. I've seen this scene so many times & I just wish we could have seen bobby & andy together for a few more seasons. The relationship between Russell & Simone, Sipowicz & Simone made the show so good & must see television.

I recall an interview with Dennis Franz in which he shared an intimate moment. He had just wrapped the goodbye scene with Bobby in the hospital and was walking back to his trailer. He suddenly found himself weeping uncontrollably. He was responding to the demise of his relationship with Smits, as much as the emotion of the death scene. That story resonated with me.

Great scene, what really moves me in this scene is when Sipowicz says how it's "Not like it was", and Simone responds with the line "We come when we are called", and the way Smits' delivers the line is what gets me, how (in his tone of voice) he doesn't necessarily like how things ended up either, but at the same time he's a peace with it. Nobody want's to leave behind the ones we care about, but death is part of life, and this scene really illustrates the lasting effect we can have on one another after, a great scene to a great cop show.

NYPD Blue was t.v. worth watching. Each week I couldn't wait for the show to start and as the show played I prayed it would go on forever. I always felt I had a special closeness with cops because my Uncle is a 31-yr vet, 21 in HQ. He'd took me and my cousin downtown Toronto a few times in his personal car and we'd listen to radio calls from the city while he drove us around the streets. Now his time is short because of cancer and I bawl when I watch episodes of NYPD Blue and Hill Street Blues.

Yes I agree the best show ever, all these new shows today I would like to think took bits and pieces from this series and built on them. Shows today are very good as well and can thank the writers, producers and most of all the BEST actors in our life time( NYPD Blue). Thank you for the great years of TV. God Bless you!

I agree with everyone that posted here, BLUE has to be without a doubt the best TV show of all time bar none. I only watched a few episodes back in the day but now I have managed to get ahold of the entire 12 seasons and have watched it 2 complete times. David Caruso was great in the beginning but when Bobby Simone came along, the relationship and chemistry between he and Sipowicz was what made that show. Once Bobby died, it was never as good but i still love my NYPD Blue.

Agree, Gosselaar was not recognized the way he should have been. He is such a natural. He was always pitch perfect. They all were, but Gosselaar could be overlooked because he had a quieter kind of charisma.

A lot of NYPD Blue clips have " a great scene " in the description and it's true. The show had many. This one could also be called great. But for anyone who has had to be the one left behind, it's a nice gentle reminder that those we miss are never truly lost to us.

This clip changed my view about “after life” - and it helped me think of my deceased parents (best parents in the world) being in a much better place, versus just being dead, gone, or I-don’t-know-where - now I know with certainty that they are out there, in the next room, watching over me, and that everything’s gonna be all right

  • @GrantTarredus

For 18 years now I’ve held that this is the finest scene in the entire history of dramatic narrative television. And of course that’s ridiculous; we should all know better than to speak in terms of absolutes. Have I watched every scene in the history of dramatic TV? So a second of clear thought tells me to holster my tongue. Then I watch this heartbreaking, life affirming art again, its magic floods over me again and I say again that this is the finest scene in all the history of television drama. Everyone whose work went into the creation of these 7 minutes should take pride in contributing to something so profound, so beautiful and so powerful.
Thank you very much for uploading this for us.

    • @sarahdara1982

DAVINOENTERPRISES Agreed, tied with the Wire. But the Wire had a much easier medium in cable TV. Creating a quality drama like this for network TV is much more challenging, since there are so many things they couldn’t show or say. That’s what made NYPD Blue so impressive. And it holds up 25 years later.
