It is safe to say that Dennis Franz had the role of a lifetime as police detective Andy Sipowicz for the show's entire run. No wonder he retired afterwards when NYPD BLUE left the airwaves in 2005. Dennis Franz knew darned well that he'd never get a role as good as that of Detective Sipowicz, starting as bigoted drunk to honorable family man. It took a while, but he got it done. NYPD BLUE: best cop show ever.
Indeed to all of this. You three say all that needs to be said about the show and about Dennis Franz. I watched this liive starting in the 90's, often taping it when I could not catch it live. I'm sure I missed some shows. Maybe 5 years ago I watched it again on Netflix. The beauty was that while I recalled most of the characters and moments of some stories, for the most part it was like I had never seen it. It was all fresh. By the end of that second time watching, I had come to understand that the story ultimately was the tale of the redemption of a man, Andy Sipowicz. I am currently three episodes away from the end of a third time through, watching with a partner who had never seen the show. I started this third time with that knowledge, that the story was one of redemption, and I could keep that in mind as I watched that story develop during this third time through. That added so much to my appreciation of the series. And for the most part, it was as fresh as the first time through. Certainly the best cop show ever, and second only to The West Wing as the best network series ever.
The “Sweetheart” scene always brings the tears. My father was a detective for most of his 27 years as a policeman. He was so Andy, if dad knew you were honest and righteous he was with you 100%. I know my father had certain demons that would derail most men, they made him stronger with a solid resolve. I miss him every moment of every day.
You just described my dad. Tough as nails with a huge heart. I have heard him on the phone talking to men he put in prison for decades when they called to thank him for being fair to them and nice to their families. And yes, he has demons from too many horrendous cases.
I recently discovered NYPD Blue on the H & I channel. It is the greatest cop show. PERIOD. Everyone is wonderful. Dennis Franz as Andy Sipowicz is brilliant.
Underrated? Seriously? He was nominated and won more Emmys than everyone else on the show and he's without a doubt the breakout star of that show and the face of it. He was the star of that show.
An extremely believe able actor. Totally in the moment. Delivered his lines with the upmost conviction. He carried that show and I looked forward to it each week. Just class.

Meh, I think Hill street blues was actually a better show, the character development was better.. NYPD blue, don't get me wrong, I love the show, but they were pushing the envelope of what they could get away with showing on TV, while Hill st blues wasn't about that
Yeppers Rx&man. My uncle spent 31 years in O.P.P. HQ downtown Toronto and always said Hill Street Blues was as real as any cop show got. He was the father I never had and we would watch police shows together all the time. Sometimes he would take me around Toronto in his unmarked work vehicle and we'd listen to the calls come over the radio. Pretty wild memories. But he was a fan of Hill Street Blues. There have been a ton of awesome police series, including NYPD Blue.
I love the arc of sipowicz derisively calling the gay secretary “gay John” and showing mild contempt at him, to being protective and trusting him/knowing he was a decent man enough to actually babysit his (sipowicz) kid. NYPD Blue is the best cop show ever to be shown👍
I understand your point, which i like, i just cant totally understand the word deriseively, i sort of get it, but can you define it for me? Im beung serious
Well you know it's a very real thing with people. With bigots they may dislike or show contempt for someone in a group they mock or dislike but there's always one or a few that they actually grow to like and that's their exception. With Archie Bunker it was Lionel Jefferson and with Sipowicz it was Gay John. People are flawed but have layers.

One of my favorite scenes was the one where Sipowicz and Simone were installing a bug in a mobster hangout and then had to pretend to be burglars when some mob guys showed up. Sipowicz even stole the TVs to make the robbery realistic 😂 😂 Simone's face was priceless.
One of my favorite episodes was the one where Sipowicz was dreaming about Andy Jr., after he was killed. That was a powerful, emotional performance....letter perfect.
1:11. This scene cracks me up because it reminds me of something that happened on this job I had twenty years ago. We had just gotten done measuring up a house and my boss was doing the paperwork. I started munching on a bag of Dorito's and he gave me the same look Andy had here. I stopped chewing and then, involuntarily, let out a loud belch. He glared at me for a second and then busted out laughing. Tony, I really miss you. RIP!
So many ppl (Mostly men) thought that women watched the show and had a crush on David then Jimmy. Got news for you guys, most of us had the hots for Andy!! My husband laughed. It was the opening scene from above showing Andy crossing a city street, She said he has "Animal Magnitizem". He did, and he was such a man a REAL man. The kind of man every woman dreams of. I saw an interview he did talking about his wife and OMG I fell even more in love. You could tell how much in love with her he was and they had been together like 15yrs at that point!!
"Games been run dickhead, you ship out tomorrow." I love that!!!! Still the best show on TV!!!! Too bad it had to end, but I would LOVE to see a reunion show where Andy retires as Sargent of the 15th squad!!!

True... but that's the beauty of using TV as a fantasy world. Its characters do the things we would LIKE to see done but know it can't happen in our real world. I'm a musician but I love the movie "Whiplash". No music teacher could get away with the stuff the instructor does but it is fun as hell to watch as a fantasy. :-)

After 12 seasons of watching him develop that character, we are the ones who thank him for time well-spent with NYPD Blue. We particularly enjoyed tuning in to see his tune-ups!
Some great moments certainly from the final years but the best Sipowicz moments were during the first 8 years, not the final 4 IMO. The pairing of Dennis Franz with Jimmy Smits was inspired, as was the writing when David Milch was involved and hands-on. Many of my favorites were not even heated, such as when Bobby Simone yields to Andy Sipowicz's radio station preference - an oldies station, and the two end up singing Duke of Earl.
My all-time favorite cop show. We the fans need to petition the powers that be to release all the seasons on Blu-ray. They are kinda hard to find online.
Great "Sipowicz" moments, the one I wish that could've been on here, the classic brawl in the locker room with him and Lieutenant Fancy, that was awesome, one of the most memorable scenes in the series.

Dennis Franz as Andy....perfection!
Mr. Franz, one of the most amazing actors I have seen at his work. And what a great series this was. I underestimated Mr. Gosselar, I thought originally "what is this sucker from SBTB doing here?" Great role.
This was great!! Thank you for posting...
MAN.....I wish there were more cops like Andy in todays world!!!
"Now I'm gonna grab me somethin' sweet"
Probably my all time favorite character and definetly my favorite show of ALL time.
Not once did I blink my eyes because this clip was so fascinating.
I love that scene at 5:57 :D
worked as an extra on that show in the mid 90s Cast was so accommodating
