Maybe it was a little stiff because you didn’t use a fabric medium called GAC900. Super common, which holds the softness of fabric with the addition of dye

Someone told me that u have to use something to brush/loosen the fiber in opposite directions with each coat to keep it oem soft. Otherwise the pant clumps on the fibers and hardens rather than evenly spreading across the whole thing

That looks amazing. I literally had the exact same idea of doing it, but everyone told me it was too stupid so I kind of forgot about it.
I have a 1500 and in Europe the only 4th gens that came with a black headliner were the special editions Sports, Rebel, and Limiteds I believe. I have a regular blacked out Sport, and the beige interior made it look so much older.
If I didn't already order a new one that comes with a black interior, I would've 200% considered this. It ended up looking absolutely amazing.

My whole interior ( including door panels ) were that beige color , and it came out awesome ( except for the liner ).. but I'm going to purchase that dye and do it also. I used to do upholstery work and if you take out the seats you can get the headline out without taking out the window and you could have dyed the plastic pieces to save a little money

    • @DevonsGarage
      @DevonsGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Only way to take out the headliner with removing the seats is folding it like a taco. I even asked someone who just redid the headliner and that is exactly what they had to do as well without removing the windshield. I did not want to fold mine. I was told by ram and 3 upholstery shops that unless you fold it, there is no other way than to remove glass. Ram installs them without the glass in when made.
And I didn’t go with dye because it wears off of the “usual touch” spots. I looked into this for a while before spending the huge chunk of change and the ultimate “wear and tear proof” way was to buy the black plastic. But I definitely agree that other methods could be done, I just wanted to do it the most OEM and least damage to any existing parts (kinda messed up on that one with my over spray but I got that off lol)

What I will never understand is when vehicle manufacturers design two of the same car with opposite trim designs. For example my 2005 Cobalt (Don't roast me pls) has some black trim and mostly beige for the interior, GM also made cobalts with black headliner and pretty much all of the trim that I have beige as black and all of the trim that I have black as beige. Just, why?
Anyways, enough ranting. Time to dye the headliner :)
    Edit: 560th sub 🔥
Also just a quick tip for anybody struggling with interior trim removal, if you know there are no screws pull sharply, if you pull the trim out too slow you can risk cracking clips

As for all the plastics, you can either use a plastic trim paint (still have yet to try that) or probably could spend some $$$ and find black OEM plastics from say an SS or so? Also 4 professional shops including the dealers body shop all said this has to come out of the window without folding the liner “like a taco” and I would have no problem whatsoever taking out ALL seats and middle console but as a guy did here on TH-cam, it still would not fit out of any door without folding. @@saddawgy it wasn’t even just that, it is impossible without folding for this model/gen truck. At least from every professional shop. I would of done ANYTHING to do it without removing the glass or folding the liner. But in this gen crew cab 2500, any person I’ve talked to so far has gotten it done by folding it 🤷🏻‍♂️ idk beats me.
The first video you put is a 5th gen and the second video is a 1500, I’m not sure if there is any difference and I’m not upset or trying to talk you down, just that as of this moment, no one has a video showing the physical removal and I’m thinking it’s because they don’t want the hate for folding the liner. I have 100% honestly talked to 4 professionals and 2 out of state people from this video that have all folded the liner to remove. I’m just trying to give a heads up to people out there with this truck which I am sure you are as well.
Honestly I may even eventually get bored enough and attempt it. On camera. Just for fun.. the entire start to end on removing it.
I didn’t believe the information either until even my glass guy said he gets a lot of calls for this method of removing the window for the upholstery shops that he charges $100 flat rate.
I promise though man, All love and hell yeah to the RAMs!🤘🏻😎

    • @DevonsGarage

I think the spray method keeps it pretty uniform but I would definitely be interested in an easier application as it gets messy. Now for odor, none whatsoever. I’ve actually had worse odor from the headliner glue at a shop rather than this dye. It smelled of nothing at all 👍🏻

My only complaint is the Beige interior ???
I could buy the next model up with a Black interior, this would be my only reason ??
