    That would be the Council tax, which includes water rates for running water, sewage, etc., which every household has to pay whether rented or owned. For this the Local Council will provide street lighting, road maintainance, refuse and recycling collection and free bins/food pails, environmental health, fire and police, schools, libraries, air/sea/mountain rescue, payments to some charities and local organisations that provide a service considered essential or important for the community such as day centres for disabled adults, community activities for able and disabled children, social work services, buses, and so on.
    We are more used to the rain I suppose; if you don't go out in the rain you'd be housebound! I have never owned a brolly and when I cycle I take waterproofs if I'm going more than local.

      Of course! But in Canada we just pay the same tax differently. I will always remember the shock of learning about it for the first time. I still get an annual shock when I receive my council tax forecast. So some things never change I guess 😅

      @@RenLuuk Local Gov't kept short of money by Central Gov't and if they do make their budget, it's lowered. I was the same with hidden taxes when I lived in Texas for a while...sales tax, what the...! Edinburgh is expensive though, especially until you find your way around the tourist traps; I live in the Highlands.

    My husband and I traveled there in July of 2011 after getting aquatinted with a couple via Facebook (very long story). They had a flat in Edinburgh and a home in a small town on the northern edge of Scotland, along the North Sea (Portgordon). This couple showed us around both places and in between, showing us places we would never have seen/experienced on our own. We were able to get a glimpse of what life was like for a Scotsman. We also met their friends and family and have continued our friendship. (They even came over here and stayed with us a few years later). The area our friends were from, spoke Doric which was a struggle to understand at times but for us they would refrain. The first part of your video brought that all back to me and gave me a good belly laugh! Thanks for your video!
    I can honestly say that was THE best vacation I’ve ever had! The people were so friendly and I hope we can return one day soon!

    @4:10: It's "Princes Street", not "Princess Street".
    As a Canadian (I think you mentioned Ottawa somewhere) you should be used to hidden taxes as sales tax is not added to purchases until you get to the checkout... at least that's how they do it in Quebec. I was surprised to find the prices marked on groceries did not correspond with what you paid for them!
    While, in North American terms, Dunblane may seem like it's "just outside Edinburgh" it actually isn't. It's closest to Stirling and a good 50 minute drive from Edinburgh.

    • @RenLuuk
      @RenLuuk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey 👋 I do say “Princes” but my accent makes it sound like Princess for sure! And yes, absolutely hate that sales tax thing. I was referring to council tax which (surprisingly) Canada doesn’t have. Who knew Canadians haven’t added on yet another layer of taxation 🙄 and, of course, Dunblane is a bit of a way outside Edinburgh. But we Canadians are so used to driving, a mere 50 minutes is around the corner to us 😂 I’m actually due to get to Scotland in a couple of weeks. Can hardly wait!

    • @douglasherron7534
      @douglasherron7534 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RenLuuk Council Tax is essentially Property Tax - don't you have that in Canada? The main difference is that Property Tax is paid by the property owner (and recovered through a higher rental charge) whereas Council Tax is paid directly by the occupant.
      Yes, I get the distance thing. My wife is Canadian and to her distance is measured in hours (or even days!)...

    • @RenLuuk
      @RenLuuk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@douglasherron7534 There is no council tax (or property tax) for renters. Only owners. As I said, I'm surprised Canada hasn't followed the UK lead. They sure did with their GST .... And yes - definitely a Canadian thing to describe in hours rather than distance. I still do that to date!!!

    Cooo, it doesn’t sound like you love Scotland much… a few wee comment from someone who is a scot and lives in Scotland. It does not rain everyday. “All” food is not deep fried, only stuff you buy in a fish and chip shop, because deep fryers is all they have. The “extra tax because you rent” is the tax everybody pays for their public services like garbage collection, road maintenance etc etc. even home owners pay it. The tax is billed to every inhabited property. Dunblane may indeed have been the “last” school shooting here, but it was also the first and only school shooting here… a small point maybe, but an important one. Oh,and dunblane isn’t just outside Edinburgh…. Although, to be fair, it might be from the POV of an American.. it’s a little over an hour away and a Scot wouldn’t describe that as “just outside” Stirling

    Hi Karen!!! Great to have you back!!! I didn't know you lived in Scotland. You have lived the life!!! One thing I can count on you are tv and movie references. That's crazy there is a tax in renting. The 90's was a great era in movies and music. I was working in the movie theater when I saw Trainspotting and Brave Heart One of my favorite jobs ever.

    • @RenLuuk

    • @terencej72
      @terencej72 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a renting tax as such. it's called Council tax and it's a tax collected by all the Boroughs or districts in the U.K.. What you pay depends on a combination of how many adults live in the house, what the banding is (the bigger the house and the more affluent the area - the higher the tax).
      Council tax (in theory) pays for local services such as policing, fire services, education, parks and household water, sewerage and rubbish collections.
      typical council tax in Scotland is around £1,000-£4,500 per year depending on the criteria i mentioned above, i live in a reasonably big house in a nice area so our council tax is £2,800 per year
      Add to this Income Tax which is a minimum of 20% of your earnings in the UK.
      Also isntead of Sales tax in the US we have VAT (Value Added Tax) which is 5% across the board for food, energy supply etc but then for everything else (clothing, electronics, cars , furniture and anything else) it's 20% of the cost of what you bought. So if you bought a tv for £1200 then £200 of that is VAT and goes to the Government.
      UK Tax is among the most punitive of any civilized country

I'm half Celt, I have (dyed) red hair and a first name that is used a lot in Scotland - I just get on great with the Scottish people. If you're genuine they're fine. I came up from the south and I immediately felt at home and so appreciative of the advantages here.
    East coast Scotland has a lot less rain than the west coast. ;) East Lothian also has more sunny days than the rest of Scotland.
    Bagpipes...I know. Difficult.
    Edinburgh has been home to some world class jazz musicians. I've had some jams with them. Such a joy.
    Like you I was confused with the tattoo stuff. I saw they had a 'Tattoo Centre' proclaimed in the city maps...I was confused.

      Awww thank you so much ☺️ I have to be honest and say it is a hard one. I think there are more jobs in Scotland. It has the oil business (I worked at an oil company myself when I moved to Edinburgh). But housing is pricier in the built up areas. It is isolated as it takes a while to travel by car anywhere south. But - if you are going to Spain or something by plane there is excellent service. Wales has a depressed economy unfortunately. But in South Wales and north wales we have beautiful coastlines. Maybe not as magnificent as the NC500 😂 but pretty great. Weather wise - I think it is a bit worse in Scotland. And the midges are so incredibly annoying. We don’t have midges in Wales.
      Hope that helps a bit. I honestly find it very hard to leave Scotland every time I go there. I am definitely in love with the place. For me it’s the location, being so isolated. I love to travel … saying that - I’ve bought a van! It’s in the garage getting a new engine 😕 but once it is up and running, I’m going to be doing a lot of travelling along the Welsh coastline. And beyond. Good luck 🤞 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🚗 💨

    Deep fried everything? Seriously? Most households will not even have a deep fryer, so you must be talking about the great Take Away, the "Fish and Chip Shop". They do deep fry everything. Actually, most of it is great. I try to do a "Chippie" at least a couple of times a year. Definitely not day to day home cooking though - you should know that. As for deep fried Mars bars etc, a Chippie somewhere did that as a gimmick. Never tried it (I like my rare Mars bar as it comes), never will, but news coverage at the time hyped this up, Now every Chippie in a "tourist" area does these. And, looking at visitors reactions on You Tube, these are great apparently. Just saying, most Scots have never tried them, but glad they are a thing for visitors to enjoy, and you pay 3 times the normal price for a Mars Bar as well.

    • @RenLuuk

    In reality the majority of this is nonsense. The bagpipes are not heard nearly as much as this, the deep fried mars bar does exist but is more of an urban myth in that I have yet to know anyone who has eaten one. As for Haggis, other than Burns night it is rarely eaten and Rab C Nesbitt does not represent the cultural majority. Edinburgh is full of non Scots who project this lazy uneducated view. You are clearly not getting out enough, try visiting a restaurant rather than the local chippie. Also to date we have 21 female Advocates in Scotland. To me, this did not come across as having any fondness for Scotland, more a sneering condescension. On the other hand I am a Scottish redhead and we tend to be hard to impress. At the end of the day Edinburgh is what non Scots project Scotland to be.

    • @RenLuuk
      @RenLuuk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your glowing review 😂 All of it was true. Including the bagpipes. And remember I moved there in 1996. But I’ve been living in the UK for 25 years now. My job has taken me back to Scotland many many times - Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow, Edinburgh and many areas in between. So whilst I am not Scottish, clearly, I do have 25 years of continual experience of visiting it several times a year.
      I am not a “chippy” person - never have been. But I have been to many restaurants in Scotland - and haggis is often a menu choice. I am quite well travelled around the world. And, respectfully, I don’t go to Scotland for the food. It has improved over the years … but still a way to go. Sorry - truth hurts sometimes 😂
      Rab C Nesbitt was on tv from 1989-1999 and again from 2010 to 2012. That looks like a pretty good run to me. Again, I moved there in 1996. I don’t know if you were around in those times. But I can tell you, he was extremely popular in the 90’s. That is why someone suggested I watch him.
      With regards to your comment on having 21 female advocates - are you aware there are approximately 460 advocates in Scotland? So 21 females is not a number to be proud of. And to date, 4 of 112 senior judges are female. Scotland remains woefully behind the times on that front.
      But hey ho - video was supposed to be a bit of fun. I do take issue with it being lazy, though. Have you ever made a TH-cam video like this? Hope you have a lovely holiday 🥰🙏👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
