    I never would've guessed that South Dakota had so much to offer, and I'm so happy I made it out there on this trip! I'd definitely add it to your list of places to check out!

      I just got my SD plates for my 4Runner. In a couple months I'll be visiting SD to also become a resident, but all of this for nomadic purposes. I appreciate you sharing some beautiful areas to explore while I'm visiting! I've only driven through SD one time, many years ago. PS I don't think you should feel bad about Mt. Rushmore feeling underwhelming 🤣

    Off to SD in June for the 3rd year in a row with my 8yr old daughter. We love it there. The Badlands are amazing and the Black Hills have so much to see and do. Great for kids and adults alike. I would move there if my situation would allow.

    Get some rain x brand windshield washer fluid on your next refill. It has a solution that creates a hydrophobic film on your windshield and rain water will bead right off. You'll get better visibility too. Good video btw!

    You might want to clarify that you can't "back country" camp from your car inside the park; you have to be at least a half mile from any road and not seen from any road. There's a great rim road just outside the park that allows dispersed car camping, as well as a free campground inside the park that allows car and tent camping that also doesn't allow RVs or trailers.

    • @BenStinnett
      @BenStinnett  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good call, John. Given that rules and regulations can change regularly, it’s an important part of trip planning to make sure you have the current information! Stopping at a rangers station or visitor’s center is a great way to find information!

    How did you find the roads for that dispersed campsite? Was it just from the outside maps at the information center? Compete novice here. Going in august.

    • @BenStinnett
      @BenStinnett  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jesse, I actually have a video all about that! It's called "How to plan your first overland adventure". I use a combination of map layers in Gaia GPS, the app iOverlander, and info from rangers and info centers to help find spots! Good luck!

    I have also been to the badlands On June of 2019 and 2020. We saw the Milky Way when we were there in 2020! It was so fun. This year we are going to Yellowstone and The Badlands this year! :D:D And its crazy how the badlands use to be on an ocean floor! :0
    That ladder trail (Notch Trail) was so fun. It was fun going up the ladder too. And the silhouettes are SO pretty at night. :O:O:O:O

    Great videos! What mpg do you get (hwy, offroad, etc.)? Thinking of a 4runner like yours but having trouble giving up my diesel Jeep Liberty because of the mpg (mid-20s hwy and average about 17 mpg from my house to the mountains and back (4wd, lo-range, playing around and exploring for the weekend). Def look forward to better aftermarket support, size, comfort (I'm 6'3" and hope the 5th gen is more comfortable), and reliability but it's been a hard pill to swallow!

    • @BenStinnett
      @BenStinnett  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tim! I’m about the same height as you and the comfort of the 4Runner was a big selling point! The downside though is definitely the MPG 😂 with all the mods (bigger tires, steel bumpers, roof top tent), I’m at about 13mpg hwy and 11mpg (average) with the off-roading factored in.

    Nice vid, I did a quick run of the badlands in October and saw it in this cool snow storm! I didn't know about the back country camping, how or where did you find that info? i'm new to overland camping, so tips are appreciated!

    • @BenStinnett
      @BenStinnett  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Charles! When I’m visiting a place like badlands I’ll typically just google “badlands backcountry camping” or “badlands dispersed camping” to try to find an official page with the information. In this case, I found the information at the ranger’s station.

    Ben, it is all truly amazing because its nature showing us some of its best. Soak it all up because your country has lots of awesome sights. One thing the UK 🇬🇧 lacks is public forest land to explore as its a no no because its owned by the council, privately or trusts of sorts. Real bummer. Keep the videos coming thick n fast. Admiration from the UK 🇬🇧

    • @BenStinnett
      @BenStinnett  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much John! That real is sad to hear about the lack of public lands for you to explore in the UK! I’m hopeful 2021 will let me get on plenty of trips to keep the videos coming! I appreciate you watching them all 👍

    what do you do for oil changes when you're on the road like this?

    • @BenStinnett
      @BenStinnett  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Eric! For this trip, I did an oil change before I left and another when I finished up and made it home. This is something I'm starting to think about more as I start to think about even bigger (multi-month or longer) trips. Maybe I'll have to earmark a day in a town along the path for routine maintenance.
