    The camera angle during the interior hollowing portion of this video is priceless. It really shows what the gouge is doing, just as your narration explains the move in detail. I'm sure you hear this quite often, but you are an excellent craftsman AND instructor. I am not a novice turner, and first started turning over 15 years ago. (I did take a long 10+ year break from turning and have just started turning again.) I just want to say that I have learned more from you, than I had in the first few years of turning. Keep up the good work!

    You know I've been turning for a while along the years off & on as my health permit and I seem to keep reviewing your channel throughout my challenges. It feeds in some extent my crazy need for turning. I get request and luckily they don't mind the lull. I appreciate your work as a teacher ( extremely well explained ) and your demonstrations are soo clear and encouraging for anyone to start woodturning. You have the voice, personality lest not forget the the beautiful peaces of art you finish with all that are conducive to learning without stress. I am thanking you for the constant & wonderful influence on my life.

    The best part of the video is that the entire time he is turning, he is explaining what he is doing and why! Most turning videos I have seen are just a view of wood being removed, with no explanation. Well done! I learned more about turning bowls from this one video than any 10 previous videos.

    Polymerization of linseed oil involves heating to 572 degrees F for an extended period of time, so yes boiled linseed oil is polymerized to change the chemical structure (hydrolysis) of the oil to increase viscosity (saturating) and reduce drying time. Its similar to hydrogenating fats to make them thicker and smoother (saturated fats are bad for you). Tung oil is treated in a similar manner as is shellac. Love turning crotch wood winged bowls. Thanks for the video.

    • @fallentreewoodcrafts
      @fallentreewoodcrafts 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A little more info: Most boiled linseed oils contain cobalt and manganese salts to aid drying. Tried and true does not.

    I am late to your channel and just getting back into turning. As others have said, you do an excellent job of talking through your reasoning and technique. Super helpful! One comment about your direction of cut; i could never really get my head around the "cutting downhill" rule of turning but your video on cutting with the grain supported cleared it up for me. You mention several times in this video that you're cutting "unsupported" to preserve the bark, and it think that might be clearer by saying the cut direction is supporting the bark. At least that's the way I interpreted it.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello Volks, words are important, especially with the supported grain direction cuts. Check out this article turnawoodbowl.com/supported-cut-wood-grain-bowl-gouge-cut-direction/ All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    Great lesson, Kent!! I have lots of crotch wood pieces like what you turned. However, I never considered halving the pieces like you did since I felt there wasn’t enough wood to turn. Now I have a different perspective and will need to try what you showed us. Thanks for sharing!

    I just turned a crotch out of “green” hard maple as my 2nd ever bowl. Your video was timely for me too. You make very clean cuts and make it look much easier than it was for me 😂. I learned some more from these bowls I will attempt to incorporate.

    Beautiful, Kent. Really lovely drake elm bowls - thank you. If only we could find such lovely wood hereabouts.. Surrey has some lovely hardwoods but not that one, regrettably! Have a great weekend - or, as you like to say, happy turning! Best Hugh

    I've learned a lot from your videos. Coming from a machinist back, some things I take for granted. You have opened my eyes to the other side of turning things. As for bowls you have shown here. Nit picking I know, but in my mind they are trays. And I can hear it now..........

    Beautiful! Also, I really appreciate your detailed comments, it really helps, as I’m a novice. Appreciate all the help!!! 🤗👍🖖✌️❤️
