I love everything about this beautiful unique looking piece great job!! And thanks for showing that towel catch, a great example to remind us to be weary of loose clothing or entangling anything like that around fingers (I can sometimes do..) when gripping to wipe etc. I am quickly becoming more and more of a fan of birch. Just got my hands on some so looking for inspiration, THANK YOU for a great example of its potential! :)
Gosh ..... first time I've seen a Record woodturning lathe in all the videos I've watched, I used to hanker after one of them when I bought handtools in Buck and Ryan's on Tottenham Court Road. Excellent, thank you !
Normally not a fan of the live edge. This is a happy and beautiful exception! Love the way you left the original shape flat plate incorporated into bowl. Super cool idea!
Very different approach and result from a crotch piece. Will approach the pieces I have in my wood shed in an alternate way in the future. Keep up the thought provoking videos. Doug in South Australia.
Wow, absolutely beautiful, How long was the total time in turning this piece of art ? ///// Vau, aivan kaunista, kuinka kauan tämän taideteoksen kääntämiseen kului aikaa?
hard to say. filming takes so much time along with work. Maybe it took about 15-20 hours to do this project, including editing and filming. I don't take the time though when this is just a hobby.
About ten years ago I gave a chunk of Osage Orange to a friend of mine who is an experienced bowl maker, and he said that as he tried trimming the piece down that small chunks flew off and left cavities that made it even harder to deal with on the second pass, so that he gave up on it. Osage Orange is the hardest wood growing in north America. But I bet if someone could make a bowl out of it that it would last for 1000 years.
have to feel where to cut and wich order to keep plank balanced. this plank of birch thankfully was pretty balanced start to finish ! always it is not that easy.
@@jarkko.makkonen It sounds like it is something that would not be easy for a beginner if it was an odd shape. Probably a beginner should get some experience wood turning on more or less symmetrical pieces first.
Thanks! 12*36 inches or 30*90cm between centers. headstock swiveled 15 inches diameter manufacturer tells. and it have 450w motor and 3 speeds 450 950 2000 rpm. good lathe but i am dreaming to get someday bigger and more powerful lathe.
Question: if I put something that non-symetrical on my lathe it would wobble so terribly that it may fall over (or at least walk across the shop). How do you make it turn so true with a non-round blank?
Good question. i have lots of weight under the benchtop helping to keep lathe stable. that piece was not that non-symmetrical what it looks. litlle bit tweaking between centers while belt is off(easy to find sweetspot when belt is off).
Awesome project. I'm going to give you some advice even though you don't know me, and you didn't ask. Set the piece turning and then look through the camera. If it's blurry slowly change the lathe speed until it clears, this might take a few tries. If the picture is clear, it will be much more enjoyable to watch, and you will gain more subscribers. I have just subscribed to your channel, and I hope you are not offended by this comment. 😎
Thanks for commenting! this lathe have only 3 speeds 500 1000 or 2000. hard to turn slowly speed =D my camera gives me bad times or i cant use it properly. i struggle lot of with filming.but learning always something new with every project. Very beautiful. I love birch and the way grain pops.

Great pointer at 9:25

Great final product. 😎🇦🇺😉

Very well done. You showed me a different design with this piece and I'm always looking for something different and this is beautiful.
thank you! ill try my best to figure out different designs and shapes, sometimes it work sometimes it wont.
That's beautiful. I love the creativity you show in turning this piece.
Thank you Alan!
Nice!! That spalting really adds character to this piece! 👍

I had no idea birch markings went all the way thru. Very unique and beautiful piece.
Thank you!👍
Diseño muy original, ya que lo hiciste con un sólo tronco, hermoso!!!! 👏👏👏💖💖💖
Thank you!
Beautiful wood and excellent craftsmanship. Very unusual bowl. Great work 👏
Oooh, the spalting on this piece is fantastic.
Very unique and a beautiful piece ❤️
Nice piece of spalted birch. Made a beautiful bowl. 👍
Great concept which turned into a beautiful design and a spectacular result.
What a unique and interesting piece! I've never seen anything like it!
A new twist on bowl design. New to me anyways. I will definitely imitate thos soon. Kudos
Thanks! I would love to see the end result of that👍
That is a pretty cool treatment of a turning blank... I'll have to remember that one.
Such a beautiful piece, the wood is exquisite.
Beautiful piece!! Nice job!!
Thank you Scott!
You are doing a great job
Beautiful piece 👍
You are the best job and thank you for sharing 💞
Pretty cool :-) Nice Design and very pretty spalted wood :-) big love :-)
Thank you very much!
Отличная работа ! Тоже точу шпальтированную берёзу , из за поражения грибком она очень преображается .
Beautiful creation!
Superbe travail et belle réalisation
Супер работа.👍
Très belle réalisation bravo 👍👏
Great piece, loved the shape. I had a hard time seeing what you were going for but turned out great. Kind of an emerging bowl. What was finish?
Thanks for commenting. danish oil and some polishing wax.

Muy lindo diseño, permite destacar las bellas líneas oscuras de la veta.
Felicitaciones!
Страшно немного таким образом обрабатывать заготовку)
Отличная работа.
Просто шедевр👍🏼
Really nice. What finish did you use?
Thanks. Danish oi and some polishin wax.
if its balanced when it is mounted and then you cut way part of it
doesn't it get unbalanced and start shaking?
maybe the operator can suppress the unbalancing by knowing where to
cut and in which order or could you mount some kind of adjustable weights on it??

nice work what is it for now ?
just a decorative object.
Nice work. How big pieces can you fit in the lathe. Never seen that brand before. And what kind of engine does it have?

@@jarkko.makkonen my dream is a robust sweet 16. But the american doesnt know what real engines are. I want a 3phase on 400v
that would be great lathe. i have too 3phase 400v avaible if i find that kind of lathe.

An important safety tip for all - A cup live centre is much safer than a point centre.
Beautiful!!!
Sehr schön 🤩 gefällt mir sehr gut.👌
Thank you and thanks for wathcing!👍
All I can think of is WOW!
Is "birch crotch" a painful condition? 😁 Seriously, I LOVE the pattern and the very unique way you used this piece of wood!
it is quite hollowed.. Thank you jim!
Good catch of the crotch lol and nice work
Nádherná práce 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Very interesting looking bowl
A bench lathe on a wobbly bench. How tf did you turn that without the lathe turning somersaults?
lots of weights under the benchtop. I have planned to get a sturdier lathe but until then this will be enough
9:54 I was expecting blood. I actually winced when the chisel jumped forward.
Actually i scared my self in that point but no blood on sight!
МОЛОДЕЦ!!!👍👍👍

Nice. Very nice!
Maestro!!
Heart shaped; fitting, she's beautiful.
Kaunista koivua, juuria sopivasti sieni värjännyt raitoja. Hieman arveluttaa itseä tuo muoto, mutta hieno kulho joka tapauksessa.
kiitos! joo hienoa puuta oli ei ollu lahonnu vielä pahasti. ensi kerralla erilaisella muotoilulla👍

Art.
It is a nice piece, but think I would cut it side to side, top to bottom for two blanks. A lot of good wood was wasted. |||
Sometimes you have to sacrifice wood to make an idea come true.
beautiful
