- This project demonstrates the ultimate awesomeness of rope, incorporating it into a vase made from clear resin and willow wood. It and other projects are being sold at ArtForOUR.org to help raise money for Operation Underground Railroad. The vase is 11 inches tall and 10 inches wide.
I basically spend my free time dreaming up ways to express my artistic side and simultanously to raise money for Operation Underground Railroad. O.U.R. funds, supports, trains and guides rescue missions for children who are in sex trafficking slavery and free them to better lives with their amazing after care program. loving this project. i really like how this one looks more like a resin vase with some wood in it rather than a wooden vase with some resin in it. the “floating wood” effect you achieved is pretty sweet. could be a neat concept to revisit someday?

Hi Dan. I'm a retired, disabled Senior Master of Art (Teaching) from South Australia. I stumbled across your site & decided to have a look & I am glad I did. What I enjoyed was the spontaneous creative attitude on display as you worked & the piece evolved into a beautiful vase where the wood & the rope seemed to float in space, largely brought about by your use of your apparent, preferred clear resin. I absolutely love your work & even more appreciative of what you’re doing for child trafficking. It’s one of my soapbox issues which is never covered in the news. Our southern border is being overrun,title 42 ends 5/23 & the cartels are making millions on human (& drug) trafficking. They use children to get in the country. Border control has found toddlers wandering in the desert. The stories of what these kids are subjected to is such a travesty. Thank you so much for being a voice for them by sharing your talents!

It's beautiful and intriguing. I am in full agreement that vacuum degassing, followed by the pressure pot is the way to go with porous materials such as these. Pressure alone would not have cleared the bubbles/air out of the rope fibers. This is outstanding work.

Resin and hardener are very rich in highly problematic chemical compounds - until they've properly hardened they should be treated with utmost care and caution! Please keep well ventilated and in the case that you get ANY on your skin please take care of rinsing very carefully! If you can, always use clear resin. I love the "floating" effect on your projects. So many woodturning people add so much color to the resin and the natural beauty of the wood & extra decor is gone. Maybe a pinch of color for Halloween or Christmas 🎄

Such a unique piece. I love the combination of materials. And the partial voiceovers is great, and the music during the down time is perfect. Watching something be made is always nice, but learning about the process, whether thought or action, adds a whole other facet.
I'm curious why you don't use a mold release on the plastic? Not that it's necessary for what you're doing.
If you ever try to do a larger piece than what your pots can handle, should try out the method that tabletop makers use. Coat the wood with a thinner epoxy first, allowing it to soak into that top layer and seal the wood so that the wood can't release bubbles into your deeper pours.

This is absolutely beautiful and my God, that song is amazing. Reminds me of my Granddad who passed away in 2015. When we were kids, he used to play his guitar and sing and all of us kids use to sit around and listen to him. There's no substitute for great talent, other than just being talented! There are alot of wood turners on TH-cam and they predominately do wood and resin bowls, but your additions leave the rest behind in terms of originality. What makes you more outstanding is the short time, (compared to other wood turners) that you have been doing this kind of Art work!!
