    Scary beautiful bowl. Get job on the turning and staying safe. I'm learning so much. Who says an old dog can't learn? 83 and turning daily.

    So, I'm a 61-year-old lady whose Dad did tree work on the side, his entire life.
    We heated the entire house with a wood burning stove in the 1970s.
    He & mom bought 75 acres of land in the early 1950s, so wood was super easy to come by. Not to mention all the tree work he did.
    All these years, I've had NO IDEA what the glob of tree is called on the trunk of a tree, but I've certainly seen & wondered about them my entire life!
    I've always thought they were quite interesting!
    Now I know what they're called and some info about them! I always wondered if it was full of bugs or ants of some type, and apparently that can cause the burl. And fungus.
    Thanks for giving me something to learn new today!
    Great Channel!! 🌳 🌲 🌳 🌲

    A masterclass in woorturning. Lots of skill and practice on show here. I particularly liked the running commentary added after the video was made - some very useful tips also, some of which I was aware of but also a few new ones learnt. I always remember my woodturning teacher telling me to look at the form, the shape, keep the curve continious and even, no bumps or flats. Great result. Thank you

    Absolutely gorgeous, Kent. Lots of nervous moments around 35 minutes but the end product is just beautiful. I’ve learnt where the expression ‘gaffer’ tape comes from, too - I never knew it was a movie term, but hey ho. By the way, that’s the first time I’ve heard someone refer to a half inch bowl gouge as small or smaller - I’ve just bought an Ellsworth / Irish grind 1/2 inch gouge and it seems at least twice the size of my 3/8 inch one! Excellent stuff anyhow, thank you v much. Best Hugh

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL, that's funny. Well, after beating up large bowl blanks with a 5/8" and 3/4" gouge, the 1/2" looks and feels delicate. ;) Happy Turning!

    The expertise used to turn the interrupted cut of varying hardness is amazing. The morse taper extension in the tailstock is commonly called a drill extension and is available from machine shop suppliers ($20-$30) with different morse tapers in the hole and the shank. This lathe has standard #2 morse tapers so getting 2 extensions with a #2 morse taper shank combined with #1 morse taper bore (hole) effectively allows turning very small projects like pens in larger lathes using small lathe centres and drives. Larger bore than shank adapters are also available for larger accessories but have to be used with caution because large accessories can overload the lathe.

    Wow. Amazing!!! I’m down here on the west coast of Florida and we are surrounded by these live oaks. I’m just getting into turning and I’ve been a woodworker for 20+ years and was always told down here that the live oaks were not good for woodworking. I’m originally from New England area. So I really didn’t know much about live oaks but I have to say I’m pretty impressed with what I’ve seen so far. I’m purchasing a couple of your courses this weekend. And I’m looking forward to really start to master wood turning. Thank you

    Really beautiful and inspiring Kent. One question which filter did you use on the mask for the CA fumes?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most filters won't stop CA fumes. Be sure your space is well ventilated and don't stand right over the CA. Happy Turning!

      @@TurnAWoodBowl Ventilation may be a problem in the basement as I don’t have windows to air it out. Maybe I can unmounted and take it to the garage.

    Leaned so much again Kent now I want to give a birl a whirl. Thanks for taking the time to edit the video well but then again, to take the time and effort to do your narration afterwards. So much more informative than the "watch this" types of videos.
