  • Firewood Log to Bowl Twice-Turned Ebony Mulberry Wood Bowl - Woodturning Video
Think of this video as a learning demonstration. I'm going to show you exactly how I do an entire bowl from wet, green wood log, through the drying, and second turning. Then I will show you one way to ebonize your bowl. Along the way, I will share many of the tips and tricks I use to make wood bowl turning more efficient and safe. Grab a beverage, sit back, and enjoy!
The wood used in this video is mulberry which is a beautiful yellowish grained wood. Ebonizing the exterior of this bowl contrasts well with the interior color. The key to making this wood bowl nice and round, especially since it started from a not dry log, is the drying process.

Thank you for actually TEACHING! The vast majority of turning videos are both intriguing and frustrating for a beginner like me, because there’s no explanation of anything. Just shots of chips flying. Nothing about the speed of the lathe, the tool being used, the angle holding the tool etc. I think we’re expected to watch and go “ah, wonderful!” And be amazed. Like so many things in this world turning looks easy as pie when someone with skills and lots of practice does it. An onlooker might think “That’s not so hard. Anyone could do that.” But as you know so well, and thank you for sharing, there’s a lot more to it than meets the beginner’s eye.

Hi Kent. I am not a woodturner, rather I am a disabled & retired Senior Master of Art (teacher) from South Australia & so I tend to look at things with the eye of an Artist. I watch a huge number of woodturning videos because I wanted to take up woodturning as a hobby in my retirement. Alas my disabilities caught up with more rapidly than hoped for & by the time I got a lathe & got it installed, I was no longer able to hold the gouges with any real degree of safety so now I watch woodturning videos by the dozens & admire the skills of others. I believe there was clearly a huge display of the Artist/Craftsman in this video & the skills you have developed. It was also a very educational video which is what you intended. Very well done my friend & I will watch many more. Don from South Aust.

Kent. I have recently discovered your channel. You are doing a great job. I have a renewed interest in turning bowls. I have used a microwave to dry various projects, including bowls. I call my process ‘ 30/30 ‘. I wrap the piece in two or three layers of newspaper. Microwave for 30 seconds then leave it undisturbed in the oven for 30 minutes. After thirty minutes you will find the moisture has migrated to the paper. Repeat process until paper emerges dry. Less scientific than weighing but end result is dry ( equalized ) moisture, ready for finish. David Brooks, Cool-n-Organic Woodwork. 🤠

New sub here. It's a pleasure to watch another artist ply his craft. And you my friend, are an artist. That was such a beautiful piece of wood as well. And this is not a critique, just a personal choice, but I cried just a bit when that gorgeous buttery outside grain got covered up though you are right that it does compliment that butteryness on the inside. On the other hand, I learned how to deal with an exterior that might not be as gorgeous so thank you for the idea. I haven't had any time to turn since I started my Friday night livestream as it has consumed all of my time for the last two years because of the intense production that goes into it (I'm a music man), but you make me want to warm up the lathe again!

Wow, Kent! you created such a beauty! I absolutely ADORE the black. And to answer your question to all of us, I for one, really appreciate your going into detail about the different steps. You obviously are a 'born' teacher. And I echo what someone else said, because I was thinking the same thing following along with you, a true teacher can anticipate what said, student, surely has skipping through their mind at any given point of time. And with such ease, a great teacher nimbly addresses each and every issue brilliantly. We're not there personally. But one feels like we are. Thank you again for such a wonderful presentation.

As a beginner in wood turning I would like to see a complete start to finish video. starting with the tools to be used and how to sharpen them and to explain more about the tools and to show the burnishing at the end. I realise that this would be a very long video but if it was done in sections it could be skipped by more experienced wood turners and have more appreciation from newbies.

What on the surface seems like a long and tedious video, is in fact an excellent representation. It gives a realistic idea of how long a simple project can actually take. All the rest of the turning videos I watch use many areas that speed up greatly in order to get to the finished project. I'm a beginner with only one lesson, and am looking at purchasing my first lathe. This is good for me to watch for realism.

OK then. I just stumbled across this video. I picked up several “ah ha” things. The one that I liked the most was about the inside curve and if it is not gradual it requires more tool work. That is where I end up on many occasions. Listening to you mention other videos got me excited to the point that I subscribed right away. Yes I like the long start to finish video concept. Even though I knew most of what was in the video I picked up lots of fine points. I don’t consider myself an artist but more of a hack. I make lots of bowls and large salt and pepper mills (on my Nova). On my Jet mini I make small boxes, assorted kits like ice cream scoops, spy glasses and the like, miniature things like goblets, bowls, tooth fairy boxes and of course pens. With your videos I hope to refine my skill set. Who knows, maybe I will be able to call myself an artist some day.

I usually don’t comment(just use the like button), but this time I make an exception because,I must say, that this video absorbed me so completely that at the very end, when I checked the duration of it, I was very surprised that it lasted nearly 1 hour! I’ve learnt more in this video than watching twenty of other wood turning ones....Keep up the VERY good work!

Another great video Kent that gave me lots of ideas. I've been using a lot of maple that I get from my property and wanted to let you know that I love your twice turning approach. So I took two large pieces of maple from the same tree, about 14" diameter each and rough turned them. I then coated one with Anchor Seal and the other with some latex paint that I had. The one with the Anchor Seal cracked after about 8 months of drying. The one covered completely in latex paint was very dry and had zero cracks. I think I am going to use latex paint to cover my wood in the future. Your video that showed how to fix cracks using carpenter's glue and sanding it came in handy on the cracked bowl. Thank you for sharing your bowl turning skills!
