    I'm actually working on a video where you can do this easier just by having an extra vat to swap out. It works awesome when you're printing in different translucent resins/solid resin combinations.

    I've been doing this multi-resin technique for a while now, and I use multiple vats and swap them out as needed. I also allow the resin to drip clean between each color stage so as to minimize the blending of resins at the transition layers. The process is time-consuming, but the results are terrific. I just wish there was a way to add pause commands into the sliced file so I don't have to monitor the printer at each color change.

  • @sirforcer

    This is a cool idea, probably easier if you have multiple vats you can use. Just need to make sure that the resins you use all have similar exposure settings needed, otherwise you have to remember to change that mid print as well.
    While watching this I had an idea to try and get a more natural color shift by just starting a print with only a little bit of resin in the vat and just adding on a bit of different colors as its printing without stopping the print, just letting the movement of the build plate "stir" them together. I wonder if you could get more of a gradient transition this way.

    Nice experiment, I see some quite creative options in the comments for other approaches too (I like the idea of say a white print, spray paint black and then a light sand of the top paint off to reveal the base white colour for the code). Maybe a follow up video trying a range of these different options to give your opinion on the best way to do it.
    My concern is how robust that hoop will be and how long it would last in the real world as it was thin and will likely be very brittle. Maybe a flexible resin would work best.

    print it with the QR part as a cutout and fill with black resin after its printed.
    less hassle on the printer, and its will be flat, with no raised parts

    • @smokeduv
      @smokeduv ปีที่แล้ว

      I've done that, but it needs to be done with very little depth because the 3D resin will never cure on the inside. I've been placing QR codes in prints but I use epoxy resin to fill the QR code, which can be sanded later to get it perfectly flat, but the downside is the long curing time of the epoxy

    great video! so I did the same thing with my Anycubic, using Tinkercad as well. Only difference was that I made two print files, one for the base at 1.25mm and the second for the RF Code and when I sliced the one for teh RF Code, I rose it off the print bed at 1.25 mm. and instead of swapping resin, I started with grey and then added black dye (all I had was grey) it worked PERFECT. Rather, the technique worked perfect. the type of RF code I used had ddetails way to small for my printer. I think if I used the one like you had, I would have had success... will try! great video!

    you could do it more cleany in theses steps
    - print in white
    - set pause on certain layer
    - get another tank clean the bed with alchol
    - get another tank with black resin countine
    - done

  • @TheS4ndm4n
    @TheS4ndm4n ปีที่แล้ว

    Could you not print the base (or as many as you can fit on the plate), then print the code on top of it by altering the Z-offset or possibly releveling? Probably not any more efficient, but you don't need to monitor the print. Also by that logic, would it not be possible to print on top of any other print with a flat top, if only one were able to exactly dial in the z-offset? One might even consider a custom or adjustable z limit switch to achieve that. Seems risky, though.

    I have zero to no experience in using pigments for resin, but is that a possible option so that you don't have to worry about switching out vats? Let it print, pause, mix in black pigment/dye, and resume? Would it be too difficult to get the color right, or possibly take too long?

    • @TheRelentlessAssault
      @TheRelentlessAssault ปีที่แล้ว

      You could do that, but then you are basically making a entirely new resin color. If you don’t have a way to store random extra resin you’ll end up wasting a vat of resin.

    I think what I'd do is print the whole thing, then use a stamp pad with black ink, and press the code into it and let it dry. Mostly because it's annoying that resin printers don't have a pause like FDM in gcode. Probably because they use proprietary chitu boards.

    I use cheap paper plates to protect my printer when removing the build plate just cut or tear a small patch off so the paper plate can go around the z axis and place it on the vat you could do the same thing to change the vat by putting it on the vat then sliding the vat out from under then back under the paper plate. There is no chance of getting resin on the printer this way and the plates are supper cheap.

  • @foobar141
    @foobar141 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The result is cool indeed. 👍 I'm not sold to the idea of switching resin in the middle of the print, though. First, because different resins are supposed to have different exposure settings, even if it's just a different color from the same vendor (although, recent versions of the ctb format allows to encode an exposure time per layer, so this could be solved at the software level, if a slicer adds a feature to use several different resins). And second because it sounds like a good way to mix resin from one color into resin from an other, and I really don't want that. :)
    I would rather have gone with painting the top, here. A drybrush would have achieved the same result. Or even printing two separate parts and gluing them. 🤷

    • @raugust6786
      @raugust6786 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @foobar141
      @foobar141 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@raugust6786 Those settings are encoded directly in the print file, it's not something you can change from the printer's UI, so no, that wouldn't be possible. That being said, it's not a problem for Uncle Jessy's print from this video, because the print is very simple, so the risk of failed print is very small. Doing the same while printing some intricate mini would be more challenging. :)
