    Chypres are my favorite class of fragrances. Vintages are ridiculously heady. The more you smell them, the more you respect them. They aren’t made to be worn by just anyone. They demand that respect.

    I have loved Chypre fragrances since in college when I first began to shop for myself. Though my early years were filled with ChantillyLace, Shisheido’s Zen and Tweed by Coty. I am from the US. Aromatics Elixir by Clinique, Cabochard and Chanel 19 and others filled the air around me as I turned everyone I knew onto a different scent, new to most. I was surprised that Chypre Mousse was not a part of this list, though to each their own! Heaven arrives the moment I adorn myself with this cosmic scent! This list does make me want to explore greatly! Thank you!

    • @MrBassrazz

      Having tested vintage and newer reformations, the latter is a toned down version of the former. But the current version is still a solid release.

    Great video chaps. Really interesting. I'm happy learning from you. On the flip side here's what one Fragrantica commenter said about mandodari. "mopped lavatory still lingering with bile. aldehydic animalic ardency. mucin and spittle staining a handkerchief. claustrophobic from bumpy backseat asphyxia, smoke curling against rolled-up windows. putrid breath wilting once-resilient flowers, shells of their former selves. warmth which warns of impending nausea. emetic rituals behind locked stall doors, bulimic cheeks sapped of color. oily scalp adorned with white ash. where abject filth and cleanliness meet." Fragrance. Its a big world

    I had to chime in... While smelling Patou pour homme, you mentioned needing to get ahold of 1000... Have either of you tried a VINTAGE parfum/extrait version of 1000? Honestly it is one of THE BEST perfumes I've ever tried in my life... They are not VERY hard to find but they are VERY expensive for a properly sealed bottles (some are still sealed in cellophane but those easily start around $400 for a HALF ounce...) I do hope you can find one but if you really can't please reach out and I'll send you just a few ml decant to wear and review... You will need to wait for me to open a fresh bottle (I have 5 but I'm using them sparingly to last the rest of my life lol)...

    Rien made me finally dive into the Etat Libre d'Orange. It is such a joy to wear this, despite the ravaging nature. It works so well for some reason. I love it. - Afternoon of a Faun is an interesting chypre (I think!) as well and also from ELdO. What do you think about that one?
    Other ELdOs I love are Fat Electrician, Tom of Finland, Jasmin et Cigarette (this one is a little too sweet and feminine for me to get a full bottle), Like This and La Fin Du Monde as well as Marquis de Sade - Attaquer le Soleil.
    Thanks for this wonderful list. There is a bunch of fragrances on there that I have yet to discover and you made me want to revisit others too.

    I really enjoyed this post! I am partial to chypre style perfumes, although I do not wear them exclusively. My favourite chypre is still Crepe De Chine by Millot which, of course has been discontinued awhile ago. Thank goodness you can still buy it on eBay. It was my first grown up fragrance, chosen by me when I was 14. I also enjoyed wearing Nikki de Saint Phalle in the 1980's but this, too, has been discontinued. I plan on trying Rien and Femme (I wore Madam Rochas!) since you love them so much!

  • @Frederikmarkusse
    @Frederikmarkusse 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I believe the Rochas Femme is from 1993. Femme was reformulated in 1989 and got a lot more cuminy.

  • @PhilDot

    Inverno Russo comes across to me as almost a chypre. Although it doesn't have any of the base notes of which you outlined, it has a similar type of affect to me. It's bitter sweet, and rich in a classic chypre way, but also unlike anything else that I've ever smelled. I had the luck, as well as £650 to get this just a few days ago, and I am so astonished by its performance. I can smell it clearly at arms length, and it lasts 2 days on my skin. Worth the money to me.

    What colognes do Cockney "bad boys" wear? I imagine Michael Caine would wear a chypre like "Chaps" or "Kouros."

  • @SarahMcCartney4160

    I sometimes use opoponax, cistus or styrax rather than labdanum, most often a blend of two or more. I'd propose that patchouli and bergamot are also essential and willing to debate that. Diorella was made with Veramoss. I might add The Waft From The Loft to your list if I may. 😁 It's smelling extraordinary now that it has aged a year.

    • @WaftsfromTheLoft
      @WaftsfromTheLoft  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you know what. I actually had a bottle of Wafts in my bag, but then felt it would be too self-indulgent to include. But, if we clearly established one thing in the video it is that chypre should be self-indulgent. Yes, I agree, it has become even more wonderful and complex!

    Dan and Jo, thank you once again for a wonderful installment on your favorite chypres. I love how you both ask the viewer for patience, as you pull out one more fantastic fragrance. Please know that we thoroughly enjoy watching you. Your advice about finding a bottle of Mitsouko was correct. The best place to begin is to learn about the fragrance's history and reformulations. Try to find a reformulation that you want, and look for it. Read blogs like Raiders of the Lost Scent, Cleopatra's Boudoir and Guerlain Perfumes, along with others, to learn how to date what you'll find. Also, spend time learning from Victoria at Bois de Jasmin. There is a treasure trove of knowledge on the internet. Make sure that the style of the box and flacon match the batch codes. If not, look elsewhere. It's best if the box is included, so you can date the bottle and match it to the box. The great part about Guerlain is that it's not that difficult to date bottles using all three. Other houses are more difficult. Try to buy a sealed bottle, if it's a splash. Try to buy full bottles or mostly full bottles. Ask questions like: How did you acquire this bottle? How was it stored through the years? Look at the color of the juice. Also, extrait is wonderful, but with Mitsouko, certain EDT vintages can be second best. Only buy from sellers with good reputations. As you stated, sometimes the top notes have faded, but still, there is much to savor in vintage fragrances. Maybe I've been lucky or simply blessed. Still, I've had a reasonable amount of success, and I was able to find several bargains over a period of years. Also, as you mentioned, I encourage your viewers to investigate the Indie perfumers that you love to introduce to us. Many offer artistic creations with respect to the classics. Your channel is the best! I hope you have blessed Advent and Christmas seasons.

    I have both Rien and Rien Intense incense. I love both . I didn’t think anyone else loved it as much as I do. I don’t know why I am so drawn to it. Most ppl don’t like it. I don’t get it, it’s so unique and just wonderful. The intense version is not just stronger, it’s incensy. So I need both. Funny coz these two, Maquis De Sade and Eau de Protection are the only offerings that I love and own from this house. I find all of their other fragrances boring and weak, and just terrible. I bought the entire house sample set. So yeah I don’t like any others but the 4 mentioned.
