  • SPECTRUM is taking over the world and exploring the Black experience one continent at a time. In this second episode of our three part special we visit South Korea. Natives and expats gather on our SPECTRUM stage to candidly discuss dating, cancel culture, personal style, cultural appropriation, and what it’s like dating in Korea while Black. It’s a conversation that pulls back the curtain on what it’s like to live in a completely different culture than the West and how those pressures can affect your daily life.

From a Western perspective, Korea, a single-ethnic country, is still immature on racial issues. However, that is not the single reason for Sam's falldown in South Korean media. The reason why Sam sank in Korea is quite different from what some comments say. Koreans still demand respect for the traditional form of family. One day, Sam posted a photo of himself with a female announcer on Instagram. One user wrote "Once you go black you never go back." to which Sam replied "PREACH!". The female announcer was married and had two sons. Koreans took this as an insult to the announcer and her family, and were outraged by Sam's duality, which was different from the stance he had previously taken on racial prejudices. I am truly sorry for the racial insults shot on Sam because of the incident. I just want to make it clear that Sam's downfall in Korea wasn't because he was black, and was not because he made voices for racial issues.

Please don't pretend this was a real problem until Sam made the post about racism on Instagram. After that, his past had been dug up and was used against him for making Koreans "look bad" for doing something racist.
No one wanted him to apologize for his past actions, they only used it against him to call him racist for calling out something they don't think is racist. After all these idol and celebrity scandals, how come Sam was the only person blacklisted from the industry? There are many other people who have done worse than him that are still prominent figures. It's very disheartening that ypu believe koreans are "immature" on racial issues when you still have "no africans allowed" signs at clubs and people that are disgusted towards black skin.

Sam's biggest problem is that he still doesn't know what he did wrong. His own words, if they are to be respected, there must be standards and they must be applied equally to all. However, the problem is that Sam also made derogatory and racist remarks and actions by Korean standards. He applied it differently from his case, saying that since it is a problem because he sexually harasses women on broadcasts and social media, it is just a joke between acquaintances and should not be misunderstood. He has doule standars.

NOT THE WHOLE STORY. First of all, I don't think Sam should've been canceled. Second, he wasn't wrong about the high school kids being taught that it wasn't right. Third, he didn't deserve racism from the online racist trolls. HOWEVER, Sam is always playing to one narrative where there's no accountability on his part.
    1. Sam was on camera doing the slanted eyes. It's literally the same thing as Korean high school kids doing Blackface, which the KIDS APOLOGIZED FOR. If you don't know the kids were doing the African funeral meme where the casket is accidentally dropped and they tried to replicate it right down to their skin. He got called out for the hypocrisy by a lot of people. Nobody likes hypocrites, period. I don't think either sides were trying to be racist but both were being ignorant.
    2. When talking about this issue, he kept using hashtags like kpoptea when kpop was completely unrelated to this whole controversy. Basically, he was trying to attack an industry that had nothing to do with his issues of him being canceled.
    3. He made it like all of Korea was after him when it was a bunch of racist online trolls. There were many Koreans that supported him AND his side businesses. Why did he feel the need to lash out against everyone?
    4. He made sexist and sexually suggestive comments after the controversy on IG. It's basically sexist 'bro speak' Black guys say to non-Black women and Korea is very sensitive of misogynistic comments, esp if you are a celebrity.
IMO, Sam would've never got canceled if he just laid low for a while after the controversy. But he kept adding fuel to the fire.

As a Korean, I watched this video and thought, "Sam"
I was convinced he was a really bad guy.....
he hides all his faults and is consistent with excuses.
As if he's a victim... But in fact, he is a perpetrator, a dual personality......
    Here's the whole story......
    1. Korean high school students posted a "black face" meme with their graduation album photos...
    2. An angry "Sam" is a caricature of race. It is wrong to tell a joke," he wrote.
Some Koreans said it was done by young students and had no bad intentions.
However, most Koreans agreed with his point.
    3. Then some netizens (Koreans) began to find and point out his actions contrary to what he said in the past...
(Acts that disparaged Asian women/ Videos of sexual harassment while swallowing saliva while looking at Korean women on TV, etc.)
4.There are so many things that I can't list one by one, and it turned out that he used "black memes" countless times on his own in the process of becoming famous in Korea.
5.The problem arose here. Along with a photo of a Korean star actress (married and with children),
" Cute!!...Once you go black, you never go back!!!"...he write this....
Some Koreans pointed out, "Look back at your racist and sexual behavior before you point out other people's behavior!"
    6. If he apologized here, it would have passed quietly.
But he starts making false excuses on other broadcasts.
"There is no sexual significance at all. Koreans misunderstood.
I'm just expressing the personality appeal of a black man."
Koreans who do not know how this sentence is used abroad believed his words.
7.Then studied abroad a young Korean students/Korean immigrants living abroad, even foreigners living in Korea, began to point out his lies.
"That sentence implies sexual meaning, and to a married top-level Korean actress,
It is even more inappropriate to use it," they said.
8.The reason why Koreans hate him...
It's his "shameless lie....." His lies brought anger from Koreans.
Once again, it is because of the lies that could have been revealed in an hour against Koreans who love him.
    9. This is the truth up to this far.
In the video, he only mentions the parts that are thoroughly in his favor.
*It's not his skin color that Koreans reject him at all.
If it was a problem, he wouldn't be able to work as a broadcaster for a long time.
he was enjoying very popularity among numerous foreign broadcasters in Korea.
    (More than many white broadcasters...)

Reading these comments is so interesting. It just goes to show that the cancel culture in Korea is super harsh. The joke Sam about about once you go black you never go back can be argued that it’s in poor taste, but it’s not racial in a negative way, also him using black memes, he is a black man…I’m failing to see the problem there. Black face is a very specific offense to black people because of its history of racism, I’ve yet to see one thing, as pointed out by any comment here, that Sam has engaged in, with a known history of racism and discrimination. Instead of trying to hear him out, when this incident occurred, keyboard warriors crucified him and then proceeded to make extremely offensive and racist comments about any black person that came to his defense. If you’re trying to be a global society, you’re going to have to learn how to deal with these kinds of issues, and learning requires the ability to listen and have conversation, some of which will be very uncomfortable.

    Let me get this straight.
Sam was cancelled because he supported inappropriate racial/sexual slur on his instagram.
He posted a picture of him and a female celebrity together. Photo was casual, nothing sexual or intimate.
One of his followers wrote, "Once you go Black, you never come back."
Sam agreed to this comment with a short "Preach brother!"
This caused a whole scene in Korea.
Now, racism is still pretty strong in Korea. It's because the whole society has been homogenic for a very long time. Older generations still believe so.
Sadly, discrimination against blacks are even greater compared to whites. But remind you, not everyone is canceled cuz they're black.
So please. Korea is a society where the oldest generation were born under Japanese colonial regime, and lived through to see the country develop from a country with the lowest(literally) GDP to present day Korea.
Racism, unlike the states, is one of the society's newest problems we experience.

Also, AAVE is African American vernacular, African Americans do not represent even 5% of the Black population worldwide. The vast majority of Black people who speak English do not use AAVE.

It's very interesting to see a video about the perspective of black people in this country, which is made up of 99 percent Koreans.
But I don't understand Sam's opinion about cancel culture.
Sam was a very active broadcaster. Almost everyone liked him, and he was a person who did various activities outside of the broadcast.
But the main reason for being 'unemployed' for two years is not because of posting about blackface.
Sam posted a picture on instagram witha a woman, there was a comment saying, "Cute once you go black you never go back LOL" and he replied, "Preach!!!!!"
She was even a married woman, and she wasn't dating him.
He agreed with this apparently sexually harassing and racist comment but gave no explanation for the comment.
What did he expect? Did he think Koreans would agree and welcome "Once you go black you never come back" to random Korean?

Cooler heads should have prevailed and he was well within his right to speak about the blackface incident but if we're being completely honest that wasn't the sole reason he was "cancelled". It was the catalyst that started the cancellation but previous clips of him pulling the slant eye gesture which is offensive to Asians came out & many thought he was being hypocritical "깨끗하지 않으면서 지적한다". On top of that there was also the sexual harassment controversy (that he eventually apologised for) & many were furious that he didn't blur out the high schoolers faces when he was aware of how sensitive Korean society is to privacy.

I'm against racism, but you can see how Some black people ignore Asians and discriminate against them when you go abroad. They have a strong aggression against Asians, saying that some blacks should not be racist. The Korean town case in L.A. and the Sam's case made a disparaging gesture for Asians on the broadcast. I am Korean. I have seen the news about Sam, too. However, there seems to be some distortion. So I'm going to tell you a few facts about it. Please understand that the words may be awkward (I use English translator.)
First, Let me talk about high school, the biggest cause of Sam.
There is a high school famous for taking graduation photos by parodying famous things of the year. Some students copied the Pallbearers meme. The high school student's makeup is just school's tradition of copying famous memes or famous characters or people of the year with graduation photos. The students were just copying meme. They didn't dress up to make fun of black people.
Also, the Pallbearers man saw the video. He just smiled and thanked th students.
But Sam, who was not even involved, posted a post about the students on social media and said they were racist. He is a celebrity, not an ordinary person. The post made students racist and made them blame. In USA, white people's black cosplay can be racism. So, their(USA) community can be blame them(the white's cosplay). But, Korea is different. this country doesn't mock black people. (This may be a generalization, but in this case there is no such intention.)
Also, he became famous in Korea as a black who loves Korea and speaks Korean fluently. But, after his post, past videos of him saying bad things about Korea spread to SNS, he came under a lot of criticism. You can't underdtand it. So, I give an example. A Chinese person went to America and became famous as a Chinese who loved America, he cursed America on a Chinese broadcast. So you guys can forgive him? I think you guys blame the person about his false behavior. Koreans are strict about such false behavior. So, he came under a lot of criticism. Many people says his behavior was wrong. The meme became famous not because it is black, but because it is unfamiliar to dance and enjoy with a coffin. Sam saw it as black racism. This means that he considers it racist for other races to copy black people. I want to tell him 'Do not find the cause in our culture, find it in your thoughts and behaviors.'
