I really like how the woman wearing the Niqab is liberal and the woman without Hijab is conservative because it just goes to show how different every Muslim is.
I mean what even is a Liberal or Conservative muslim? A muslim is someone who submits themselves to the creator and adheres to his commands, the niqabi said she considers herself Liberal because Conservative muslims (born into islam) are more intune with their culture, but with that logic wouldn't that make the Niqabi a Conservative because she follows Islam fully and not a culture

it's funny how Jubilee cut them off during a very important part of the discussion claiming they needed to move on to the next prompt when there clearly was a lot they wanted to say, meanwhile in the 'trans vs conservatives women' middle ground video it was around 40 minutes long and they suddenly didnt "have to move on to the next prompt" and they all got their points across.

I like how the girl who doesn't wear hijab accepts that it is still compulsory. A lot of people will try to twist the rules because they don't follow them, but she accepts that it is compulsory despite not doing it. That can be a very hard thing to do.

All credible scholars agree, and in Islam we do not create our own interpretations, the people of knowledge build interpretations. She accepts it is compulsory but struggles with it, and that’s ok.
Latoya mentioned how cultural norms can get misplaced as religious rules and I wish they talked about that more because as a revert that's been a big struggle for me.
Keep in mind as well, the opposite is true, where the other side tends to make religious comandmants as a "Culture thing" or as a "subject of opinion" just to feed their cognitive dissonance and feel better about not following a rule that is hard ( which is basically the case for most religions )

I disagree. Other than the revert, I strongly dislike this group. The one interesting point is that a lot of interpretations and scholars do have their own agenda and biases.
The two that disagreed that acting on homosexuality being a sin seemed confused. Islam is very clear that it is a sin to act on it. Other than them two, the rest seemed to understand Islam. I've personally made the decision to convert to Islam as i luv the whole idea that Muslims help each other & especially the less fortunate & that's why they give money during Ramadan & it is a beautiful & simple religion, but haven't taken my Shahada yet, gonna do that Wednesday possibly...Alhamdulliah
its not possible to be objective when looking at an ancient text with our ape brains which have our personal perspectives which have been coloured by all of the individual experiences we have throughout our lives. As a non-muslim, I feel that this was very eye-opening. You do not see a ton of representation in the media about regular people who happen to be muslim, and it is a massive shame on the media for not properly representing muslim peoples. Ya'll did wonderful in my opinion.

One thing I def noticed in the Muslim community is that people tend to only focus on womens hijab and they seem to forget that men have a hijab too. (For those who don’t know, men are supposed to cover their bodies, not wear tight clothing, cover to your kneecaps, not show arms or chest around non-Mahram women) only face and hands. But only women are hyper-policed in this area and it’s sad. I wish more people would discuss both sides of piety smh. Our religion is so perfect but our people really need guidance in terms of sexism and prejudice

Jad quoting the Quran and having so much of it memorized, is beautiful and inspiring. As a Christian, I should definitely spend more time reading and memorizing my Bible.
Muslims are directly instructed to read and memorize the Quran (not necessarily all of it). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the same is true for Christians.
There ain’t any Christian’s who memorized the Bible, there are too many versions with lot of inconsistencies so I can imagine why memorization is such a challenge for Christians

these scholars use their personal opinion and background to interpret it… and that’s why we have these many denominations (Madhaahibs) in Islam… we have some denominations that drinking wine and dancing is a way of pray and some denominations that makes aged wine haram but the pee of camel halal… and all these variations comes from the difference in interpretation of Quran… would love to see the scholars providing the evidence but my guess is it will look similiar to our politicians telling us what they will do if we vote them...
This is the most impressive middle ground episode yet, for three reasons: 1. The topic is complicated, which leaves us with more questions, more issues to ponder. 2. The questions were well thought out, which allowed the guests express opinions from a certain depth. 3. The guests weren’t afraid to voice their opinions as is, which allows for a conversation with multiple layers, allows each person to truly understand the other as they dig through their beliefs. Thank you for saying that. In Islam, we perform our daily prayers in Arabic even if it's not our native language. The Quran as a whole is also written in Arabic. For non-Arabs like me, we learn the Arabic alphabets & pronunciations early on to recite the Quran. It's also very common to have dual-language versions to help us understand the verses.
Other than his looks there really isn’t much redeeming value to him or any person who consciously ascribes the credibility of their will, feelings, logic, sense, humanity etc. to a superannuated written text that is rationalized by subjective interpretation on an individual basis. The point that Mahmoud made about the religion being perfected is so true and many Muslims forget that today. You can’t change the rulings of the religion to what you see fit. It is perfected and complete and authentic. No Muslim can argue with Allah’s word, which is final.

As someone who would identify himself as a "liberal muslim" listening to Jad clears some points in my head. He is very well read and can recite from our book relating to each topic which is really impressive. Great video and great debaters overall!
The problem is that he isn't well-read in much else, given that he isn't aware of the many claims in the Quran that are now known to be false. For instance, take the story of Noah's ark. When millions of animals got off the ark at Mount Judi, it would not have been possible for them to migrate back to their respective areas of the globe in only a few thousand years (and without leaving any colonies en route). It isn't possible for one person to have collected millions of different species of animals from every forest, desert, tundra, and grassland on the planet, whilst keeping all these animals together and fed, before them all onto a single boat. This is notwithstanding the fact that there's no geologic evidence of a global flood. Remember, a message from an all-knowing being should not contain any errors. Even if one exists, then the claims of divine authorship aren’t true.
But for the sake of argument, also take a look at the way the Quran talks about the 'creation' of the Earth and universe [41:9-12]. The timescales are completely wrong (they're said to have been formed in only thousands of years), and the Earth is even claimed to have existed before the rest of the universe. Or consider the human genesis story of Adam and Eve, which biology disproves. Or consider the fanciful claim that Muhammed split the moon in half. There’s no evidence of this ever happening, nor any record from anywhere else on the planet of this ever happening.
Also, though less damning than the factual errors, another cause for serious doubt is how the Quran doesn’t mention anything about the world that wasn’t already known (or thought to be true) by 7th-century Arabs. There’s no notion of other planets, stars, or galaxies when speaking about the universe. No notion of fertilisation between the sperm and an egg when speaking about embryology. No notion of the evolutionary process when speaking about the ‘creation’ of plants and non-human animals. No notion of past human species when speaking about human origins. Allah’s apparent ignorance in the Quran happens to apply to every facet of knowledge that wouldn’t have been known by Muhammed. There’s not even any mention of animals or plants that Muhammed would not have known about. It’s almost as if the Quran was written by 7th-century Arabs.

I find it strange that some people like to hyper focus on one of two lines of religious texts while ignoring entire passages. For example, the way conservative Christians will hyper focus on homosexuality being a sin and will continually quote that one line in the bible but then completely ignore the fact that it also says eating meat and dairy together is a sin, mixing fabrics is a sin, touching the skin of a pig is a sin. Like why are you not outside McDonalds protesting against cheeseburgers.
However, I think Muslims definitely in this day are more strict with their religion compared to Christians. We also have sins which are major compared to those which are minor sins.

Confucianism allowed for same-sex love and affairs so long as household duties were upheld, Buddhism (particularly Zen) is full of stories of male monks falling for young men and learning about the transience of beauty from these encounters, ancient Greek and Roman religions were famously libertine in this respect, etc. It's really just the Abrahamic faiths that have a hangup about this, partly because they're copying one another, and even that has plenty of exceptions.

As a non Muslim I think both sides should be incredibly proud at how much they respected each other’s opinions & tended to remain to try to find the common ground in the end because it reflects beautifully on their religion & culture & sets a great example of how easy it should really be to respect people you don’t agree with. Especially in a world that villainizes this culture it’s makes me proud for them.

As someone who isn't Muslim and doesn't know that much about the religion, I really loved this discussion. I felt that I learned so much, and Jad and Mahmoud really know their stuff. Overall, this was a great group to listen to.

A liberal muslim would be open to new ideas about islam. A conservative muslim would not be open to new ideas regarding islam. “Conservative” has been portrayed as being over-religious when it is literally just following your religion the way it was supposed to be. Individuals other than conservatives just means that they followed their desires and veered away from their religion.
I was so sad to see Jad take on a completely different personality in the new episode of ex-Muslims vs. Muslims. He was well-informed and well-respected here, but I felt conflicted about him in that episode. Atia was the one who carried the entire debate there and managed to call out the hypocrisy from both sides respectfully along with D'Harmonie.

Jad and Mahmoud really impressed me with their knowledge and recitation. Everyone's pov was well presented. These conversations really help you to empathize with and understand the mindset of various groups (even if you don't necessarily agree).

I was raised in a Christian home, but I don't prescribe to those beliefs or Islam. However, this video was very educational and it's made me realize Christians and Muslims have a LOT more in common than I think most people realize. It's unfortunate that there's so much hate and ignorance between the two groups/religions.
Muslims are taught to respect all religions, if you ever see a Muslim going off, hating on Christianity ( or other religions in general), that person may have been misguided in the teachings of Islam

I always thought middle ground was the best series of Jubilee. It gives you a completely different perspective from people who have actually lived through the subject matter. So enlightening!
Middle Ground is the series that got me into Jubilee in the first place. I remember binging them all years ago when I first found the channel. Kinda sad that they've slowly started to drift towards more shallow dating content like the Cut, but gotta pay the bills I guess.
I'm a Christian and this was very interesting for me. I don't know very much about Muslims but I see how Hollywood has unjustly portrayed them negatively as a whole due to specific world events. All of the Abrahamic religions should come to respect and uplift each other so that we can each worship peacefully in our own ways. We are in many ways siblings, each imperfect as mortals and seeking to align ourselves with truth. I would see the Abrahamic religious communities share love and honor amongst eachother
I would just like to mention that I truly respect this video. It is such an intense topic and it takes so much courage to spell out everything that you feel no matter which side you're on. There were parts where I wanted to yell questions at some of them but it truly helps to see arguments in such a setting. I love the psychology of it all.
I’m not really sure how the niqabi was a “liberal Muslim”. She seemed like a proper Muslim. If anything, being a revert is an advantage because you obtain a fresh and proper understanding of Islam.
She explained why she considers herself a "liberal" Muslim. She stated that as a revert, she still does not have a firm grip on Islam and is still learning and struggling with putting everything into practice which is completely understandable. Hope that clarified it😀
Reverts don't necessarily get a proper understanding of Islam, sometimes their teachers or the people around them that are Muslim will give them bad takes, and because they are new, they don't know any better. But then later on through experience as a Muslim the revert learns more and begins to adjust accordingly. I've heard this many times from reverts.

True Christians are the same way. We can live our lives according to the Scriptures. We are dedicated to defending God's truth and sharing the Gospel. Unfortunately, most Western Christians are lazy and ignorant. And many are not actually Christians but simply go to church or had Christian grandparents. True Christians are just as dedicated to and knowledgeable of Scripture as these Muslims are about the Qur'an. So yeah...there's that.

Hi. As muslims we memorize verses of the Qura'an word to word. Every muslim at least knows surah Al Fatiha and other short surahs, as we recite them when we perform salah. Hope this was informative :)
@Mary The Raspberry I knew a lot of surahs too :) but like a lot of Muslims we are mostly taught the surahs and then taught the rules and revelations separately so I think jad did really well saying it how it is in the quran and then explaining the meaning of the words from the quran I definitely will be trying to learn more now

I disagree. Other than the revert, I strongly dislike this group. The one interesting point is that a lot of interpretations and scholars do have their own agenda and biases.

As a non-muslim, I feel that this was very eye-opening. You do not see a ton of representation in the media about regular people who happen to be muslim, and it is a massive shame on the media for not properly representing muslim peoples. Ya'll did wonderful in my opinion.

One thing I def noticed in the Muslim community is that people tend to only focus on womens hijab and they seem to forget that men have a hijab too. (For those who don’t know, men are supposed to cover their bodies, not wear tight clothing, cover to your kneecaps, not show arms or chest around non-Mahram women) only face and hands. But only women are hyper-policed in this area and it’s sad. I wish more people would discuss both sides of piety smh. Our religion is so perfect but our people really need guidance in terms of sexism and prejudice

Thank you for saying that. In Islam, we perform our daily prayers in Arabic even if it's not our native language. The Quran as a whole is also written in Arabic. For non-Arabs like me, we learn the Arabic alphabets & pronunciations early on to recite the Quran. It's also very common to have dual-language versions to help us understand the verses.

As someone who would identify himself as a "liberal muslim" listening to Jad clears some points in my head. He is very well read and can recite from our book relating to each topic which is really impressive. Great video and great debaters overall!

The problem is that he isn't well-read in much else, given that he isn't aware of the many claims in the Quran that are now known to be false.
For instance, take the story of Noah's ark. When millions of animals got off the ark at Mount Judi, it would not have been possible for them to migrate back to their respective areas of the globe in only a few thousand years (and without leaving any colonies en route). It isn't possible for one person to have collected millions of different species of animals from every forest, desert, tundra, and grassland on the planet, whilst keeping all these animals together and fed, before them all onto a single boat. This is notwithstanding the fact that there's no geologic evidence of a global flood.
Remember, a message from an all-knowing being should not contain any errors. Even if one exists, then the claims of divine authorship aren’t true.
But for the sake of argument, also take a look at the way the Quran talks about the 'creation' of the Earth and universe [41:9-12]. The timescales are completely wrong (they're said to have been formed in only thousands of years), and the Earth is even claimed to have existed before the rest of the universe.
Or consider the human genesis story of Adam and Eve, which biology disproves.
Or consider the fanciful claim that Muhammed split the moon in half. There’s no evidence of this ever happening, nor any record from anywhere else on the planet of this ever happening.
Also, though less damning than the factual errors, another cause for serious doubt is how the Quran doesn’t mention anything about the world that wasn’t already known (or thought to be true) by 7th-century Arabs. There’s no notion of other planets, stars, or galaxies when speaking about the universe. No notion of fertilisation between the sperm and an egg when speaking about embryology. No notion of the evolutionary process when speaking about the ‘creation’ of plants and non-human animals. No notion of past human species when speaking about human origins.
Allah’s apparent ignorance in the Quran happens to apply to every facet of knowledge that wouldn’t have been known by Muhammed. There’s not even any mention of animals or plants that Muhammed would not have known about. It’s almost as if the Quran was written by 7th-century Arabs.

I find it strange that some people like to hyper focus on one of two lines of religious texts while ignoring entire passages. For example, the way conservative Christians will hyper focus on homosexuality being a sin and will continually quote that one line in the bible but then completely ignore the fact that it also says eating meat and dairy together is a sin, mixing fabrics is a sin, touching the skin of a pig is a sin. Like why are you not outside McDonalds protesting against cheeseburgers.
However, I think Muslims definitely in this day are more strict with their religion compared to Christians. We also have sins which are major compared to those which are minor sins.

How I loved listening to the two young Muslims, Muhammad and Jad
As a non Muslim I think both sides should be incredibly proud at how much they respected each other’s opinions & tended to remain to try to find the common ground in the end because it reflects beautifully on their religion & culture & sets a great example of how easy it should really be to respect people you don’t agree with. Especially in a world that villainizes this culture it’s makes me proud for them.

I was raised in a Christian home, but I don't prescribe to those beliefs or Islam. However, this video was very educational and it's made me realize Christians and Muslims have a LOT more in common than I think most people realize. It's unfortunate that there's so much hate and ignorance between the two groups/religions.
Muslims are taught to respect all religions, if you ever see a Muslim going off, hating on Christianity ( or other religions in general), that person may have been misguided in the teachings of Islam

I feel like its also the people who surround us that influence how we view each other. Like i really want to learn more about everyone so i can understand them better but its hard to find people who care. At that point it comes down to me personally to go out of my way to learn.

Middle Ground is the series that got me into Jubilee in the first place. I remember binging them all years ago when I first found the channel. Kinda sad that they've slowly started to drift towards more shallow dating content like the Cut, but gotta pay the bills I guess.
I'm a Christian and this was very interesting for me. I don't know very much about Muslims but I see how Hollywood has unjustly portrayed them negatively as a whole due to specific world events. All of the Abrahamic religions should come to respect and uplift each other so that we can each worship peacefully in our own ways. We are in many ways siblings, each imperfect as mortals and seeking to align ourselves with truth. I would see the Abrahamic religious communities share love and honor amongst eachother

I would just like to mention that I truly respect this video. It is such an intense topic and it takes so much courage to spell out everything that you feel no matter which side you're on. There were parts where I wanted to yell questions at some of them but it truly helps to see arguments in such a setting. I love the psychology of it all.

I’m not really sure how the niqabi was a “liberal Muslim”. She seemed like a proper Muslim. If anything, being a revert is an advantage because you obtain a fresh and proper understanding of Islam.

She explained why she considers herself a "liberal" Muslim. She stated that as a revert, she still does not have a firm grip on Islam and is still learning and struggling with putting everything into practice which is completely understandable. Hope that clarified it😀
Reverts don't necessarily get a proper understanding of Islam, sometimes their teachers or the people around them that are Muslim will give them bad takes, and because they are new, they don't know any better. But then later on through experience as a Muslim the revert learns more and begins to adjust accordingly. I've heard this many times from reverts.

Same here. And in a way from all this, I always learn things too, I feel I get smarter from them, as well as - although I already have a LOT of empathy and can see other sides of a subject with most things - I enjoy hearing the different sides in such a respectful way.

I’m a Christian watching this, and I almost envy how dedicated, and respectful all them are when it comes to the Islam religion. I love when mahumod (I’m sorry for misspelling that) said “our personal opinion doesn’t matter when it comes to the religion” and I wish more people who say that they’re either Christian, Muslim, or whatever other religion, would think this way, and be as dedicated as they are. True Christians are the same way. We can live our lives according to the Scriptures. We are dedicated to defending God's truth and sharing the Gospel.
Unfortunately, most Western Christians are lazy and ignorant. And many are not actually Christians but simply go to church or had Christian grandparents.
True Christians are just as dedicated to and knowledgeable of Scripture as these Muslims are about the Qur'an. So yeah...there's that.

Hi. As muslims we memorize verses of the Qura'an word to word. Every muslim at least knows surah Al Fatiha and other short surahs, as we recite them when we perform salah. Hope this was informative :)
@Mary The Raspberry I knew a lot of surahs too :) but like a lot of Muslims we are mostly taught the surahs and then taught the rules and revelations separately so I think jad did really well saying it how it is in the quran and then explaining the meaning of the words from the quran I definitely will be trying to learn more now
